Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an email from Dean Smith at UASOM this morning informing me that my Application for Classification as an Alabama Resident was denied and that I will be considered for admission as an out-of-state student.

Dang that really sucks...however I think you should be optimistic b/c I feel like this year the balance will shift more out-of-staters given the stringent admit stds....I think if they keep pulling this stuff on in-staters, ppl with good stats who have gotten in elsewhere who find out in July will already have committed (apt. etc.) to where they were actually accepted (e.g. maybe a private school or another southern state school or USA) as has happened with several well-qualified applicants I know who are now at South and other schools. So anyway, my point was that b/c of this I could see more out-of-state folks filling out those seats.

Idk I'm annoyed by all this hulabaloo, I feel like it will be cyclical and given that ppl will be wary / warned off b/c of UAB's proclivity from this cycle to admit people late in the game, they will actually be undersubscribed during the first portion of their cycle and overcompensate with accepts later in the cycle next yr. 🙄

LJ, I'm really sorry to hear that. That really sucks. Is there any avenue for appeal of the decision?

I appreciate the condolences. I appealed the decision this morning, at least until I was told that it was impossible for me to appeal. Awesome, right?

I'm really sorry to hear that,LJ. Is there a separate wait list for out of staters?

Thank you, also. I have no clue. Now that they've classified me as out-of-state, I'm going to assume I'm on the bottom tier whether or not there are separate lists.

To quote Bill Clinton: "It's the economy, stupid"

I think it goes without saying that when the job market bottoms out, people turn to school for shelter. Many of my friends at school who were going into finance or consulting have either done a voluntary Emergency Major Switch (most into pre-law, but a good bit into pre-med) or the firm they were going to work for has retracted their offer and now they have no choice but to stay in school. The worst part, admissions committees around the country all know that, and due to the increased number of applicants and a more competitive applicant pool, they're excercizing their right to be more selective. When the admissions statistics come out for this year, we'll all see that suddenly UAB got a lot more competitive than we had thought.

Also, sorry to hear about your app. LJ!! Thanks for the update, and let us know if you hear anything else.

I never applied for residency for tuition purposes. Was I supposed to apply for in state residency, for tuition or admissions purposes?

'twould suck if I didt get in because of that...

There's a form on the secondary to fill out to be considered as in-state if you didn't fill it you're likely being considered as an OOS candidate.

If you grad from an AL school and you have an AL address then maybe they'll just remedy that and consider you IS. Not sure on that though.

I vaguely remember checking a box that said I was IS. I just didn't know if I had to fill out another separate application.

I never filled out any form regarding residency. I thought I remembered being told in my interview that if the school questioned your Alabama residency, then they would contact you and tell you to fill out that form. Can anyone else confirm this? And did any other in-staters not fill out this form?

yea, im a in state and didnt have to fill out that form..

I think after answering their questions of how long u've been in AL and how long ur parents have been Al residents..they conclude whether or not u're a resident...

Then they send on the form if they are unsure...

That's what i think anyways

LJ, sorryy about that news. I would assume they have a separate WL for OOS people since they are restricted to ~10% of the class as OOS. As far as being an IS applicant.. I don't recall filling anything out but when the secondary was fresh it did have a drop-down box that said something along the lines of, "Are you an Alabama resident?" I think that they have to request for you to fill out a residency form.

Also UAB is mad strict on this, esp for med school, since they are required to only accept so many OOS people.. on their website it states somethign along the lines of, "If you are here just to get an education then you aren't a resident." However, I thought you had been here and working for a while...

If you were born/raised in AL or your parents are AL residents, there is probably no reason why they'd have you fill out the form. I was raised in Mississippi and moved to Alabama because Mississippi doesn't have an accredited MPH epidemiology program. Shortly after moving here 3 years ago I established legal residence (car tag, driver's license, voter reg, taxes, the works). The fact that I'm not from here originally is what raised a flag on their end. Nevermind that I consider this state my home.

I called UAB a few months ago to double-check that I was being considered as an instate app. One of the ladies there told me that basically if you put on your AMCAS that AL is your home state, then they will consider you instate. As a result, I never had to fill out any other forms.

Yep. My AMCAS said I was an AL resident. In fact, I am legally considered a dual-resident of MS and AL and could have applied to University of MS instead of UAB/South AL. When the UAB admissions office told me that I would be considered in-state if I paid in-state tuition during grad school at UAB, I was confident that choosing Alabama was the right decision.

Those SOB's.

The drop down box on the secondary was a bit misleading imo. I didn't think I had to fill it out because I was in-state...only caught it on my last read through of the application. Basically, you clicked it if you were instate and answered some questions about how long you have lived in Alabama and how long your parents have lived in Alabama. You can still access your secondary to read or print it, so you if you guys are worried you can double check and then contact the school if necessary.

Out of curiosity, how can they forecast attrition rates?

they can't really. they can do some things to prevent over-subscription though like.. 1) don't admit well over the limit, 2) set the bar artificially high

I think on march 15th the schools are updated through AMCAS on where you are holding acceptances/wait-lists at other places as well and that can be used to help determine who will leave/who will definitely accept.

My friend Lindsay just called me...rural apps are due 4/1, but luckily you can import most of the data from your AMCAS.

Still not sure if we are just over-analyzing this or if it has any significance, but today my secondary app shows that it was updated on 3/23.

Anybody dare press the "Withdraw your Application" button?

Oh, crap-- I pushed it. I just had my pointer hovering over it, and somehow I must have clicked. The clock on my desktop flipped to 108:00, then rolled furiously down to zero, and then flashed some red hieroglyphics for a few seconds. Then the blue screen of death popped up and it said I had experienced fatal error 481516:2342 and that I would have to reboot AMCAS and throw a virgin into a volcano. Help me, SDN! What can I do?!?

Hhaahahhahahahh!!!! Greatest 2 posts I've read on SDN in a while.

The worst ones would be all these posts talking about all acceptances already being sent out...

Hey guys! I clicked the "Withdraw Application" button and in five minutes, I got an email that said I was accepted!!

...just trying to thin out the waitlist pool a little. Worth a shot, eh? 😉

Must be a leap of faith-type of thing. Just like in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

That's a fantastic GIF...

But it's from a different Indy...that's the one where the Thugees eat hearts and such.

The leap of faith is where Indy has to get across a vast gorge thing and he takes a blind step into what looks like empty space, but it's a cleverly concealed rock / step pathway across...hence since you couldn't see the step you had to make a leap of faith and assume there was one there.

I got assigned to the Tuscaloosa campus today. Not my first choice, but there should be fewer students per doctor. I'm from T-town anyway, so I know what I'm getting at least.

Cheers! At least you won't have to go too far from B'ham when you have to go for third year. You can still hang out with BHM friends on wkds etc. or wkdays if you are so bold

BTW how did you assign your prefs? One only or multiple or what?

My first though was, "Agh, I hate you Derek!" But my second thought was, "Good for him!" You're a bit evil.

April Fools is going to be murder on this board.

I checked mine and it still says 3/18. I don't necessarily think we are over analyzing. I think we're second hand witnessing the filling of the waitlist. The questions is are the filling top to bottom, or bottom to top? Or is it by last name? Or interview date?

For whatever it's worth I interviewed 3/12 and my last name starts with a P. I also applied November 1.

Anyone care to analyze? I don't think it's by interview date because Thacked and I were there together and his didn't change the day mine changed. And his last name starts with a T.

My prefs were 1. Bhm 2. Tuscaloosa

Just got an e-mail telling me I'm on the alternate list and my position (upper/middle/lower 3rd). So check your inboxes 🙁

EDIT: Just checked my status page. I can now confirm that the "last updated" information on the status page correlates in no way to your application. "Your Current Status is Alternate...." and my app is still last updated @ 3/12. So we spent a lot of time looking at something completely irrelevant, haha

That's really good! Would you mind sharing where you ended up on the alternate list?

Well, that's a lot better than it could have been. Sorry for making you guys obsess over the dates...although, hey, maybe you were assigned to the list on 3/12 and it does mean something. Who knows? Heck, maybe you're first man up.

No emails here by the way...I'm kind of scared to log in to the secondary page now.

Ok, it's official. Now I am freaking out! Haha. I know last year's rejection emails all went out at the same time and waitlists emails all went out about the same time, so if I don't receive an email shortly, it's probably bad news.

Just checked...interview complete, still under consideration.

WiseGuy, Veej--did you guys ever post your stats by chance? I'm wondering how I compare to you...

nope, never posted info really.

31Q, reapplicant, 3.5ish BCPM undergrad biomed engineering / mini-minor in management, currently getting a masters in med science, usual volunteering and other app-building activities, 2 publications... um, that about summarizes me in a nutshell. haha

Hey that's better than a flat out rejection, which I'm assuming that's what I'll be getting.

Wow Veej, I can't believe you're an alternate with stats like that. I wonder who was accepted right out? Do you guys really think that all the alternate emails are going out at once? I'm going to be so depressed if I'm flat out rejected...
