Anyone else dying to hear from UW-Madison!?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was having some serious doubts 😀 ... i just don't like waiting when everyone else seemed to know ... boo ... and you know, ithaca IS kinda in the middle of nowhere .... good ol' USPS came through though.

congrats wi girl & rebeki!!!!!

Wi girl - i know i posted this on the acceptance thread but I am so happy for you. I think I might even be more happy for you than if i got in myself!

Hoodle I do not envy the job you have of deciding! As we discussed I am having issues with the 2 schools and if i happy to get into illinois or hear from Penn about an interview (though Im not so optimistic about Penn) its just going to compound things.

I agree that seeing the school is usually a really big help! If your really interested in DVM/PhD and ur partner likes Davis that seems like a good choice. But WI has a lot of pull too with all that you said. I think cornell is a great UG school (and im sure wi vet would have something to say) but as a NY resident i wasnt sure I would go there even if i happened to get in! Don't ask me why I can give you advice and i can't even make a suggestion to myself. I guess its always easier when its not you! 😉

Calpard, you are a sweetheart. I'm really rooting for you for IL -- or Penn. I'm rescinding my application there (I'd go to WI any day over penn!!) so maybe that will help you out a bit??

Yes, cornell is a GREAT ug school ... but i didn't apply because i knew i wouldn't want to go to vet school here. its great, just not for me -- it would have been the same as penn: rescind if i got into WI. plus they had that really long and crappy supplemental -- no thank you!!!

Calpard -- go to UofE if you have to chose between them and Ross. Everyone seems VERY excited about UofE (i've never seen a bunch of Ross enthusiasts) and its AVMA, so you don't have to jump through those hoops. The extra year may be nice, just think of it as less cramming than your 4 year cousins. that being said, i still hope you get into IL.

yay! I know its super early, but anyone thinking about going to the open house yet?

Congratulations wi girl and Rebeki:hardy:

I'll be at the open house on the 28th. I may be very jet lagged though as I will just be getting back from a New Zealand -not Vet related- vacation. Can't wait to meet you all. I hope Wisconsin can really show us all they have to offer. Although that won't make my decision any easier.

When I went to NZ and flew home, my days/nights were COMPLETELY mixed up. I've heard that some type of tea may help with jet lag though ...

Yay! People to meet! I kinda want to go out that night and see what madison has to offer for "extra-curriculars" too ... 🙂

Wi girl i think we could do this forever...u are too cute! Thanks for letting me know about Penn - ill keep my fingers crossed...just out of curiosity did you mean UofE as in edinburgh or were u thinking glasgow and just typed E? Just curious which school u were referring to!

P.S. my mom lurks on SDN b/c i got her addicted too and i keep telling her how excited i am for everyone! We are so impressed with how much everyone cares about one another even though we technically are competitors! I hope this continues in vet school!

While I was out celebrating, I missed the good news wigirl. Congrats:clap:

My hubby and I will be at the info session on the 28th😀 Who else is coming besides me & wigirl?

Also, for those of you from the area, what would be good areas to start a home search in? We are currently thinking that we will buy a condo.

(a) we could go on like this forever. i love how friendly we all are -- esp. in the UMN and UW threads; its kinda like we're a big family already!

(b) I was thinking glasgow and typed an E. sorry. hmmm ... is glasgow AVMA too? i get so confused with the overseas ones ... this is why i stuck to the states. and only three schools -- and i'm rescinding my app to one. i'm good at multitasking (i swear) but after reading SDN for awhile it feels like everything runs together .... and i forget where i saw things. boo on me, i'm a silly goose.

(c) while my mom doesn't lurk on SDN, she often asks me if i've "talked to anyone about that online" and LOVES that i'm able to ask first years (and older!) questions about the school/etc.

(d) I second the hope about supporting each other. I actually talked about it in my interview at UMN. I really don't want to go to a super competitive school. its not fun. i'd rather be able to talk to people about the material and have fun with it. tests suck enough without having to worry about mean classmates who never help each other.

(e) yay WI. i seem to end almost every post like this ... 🙂

Also, for those of you from the area, what would be good areas to start a home search in? We are currently thinking that we will buy a condo.

Actually, Rebeki, I'm buying a condo too!! (w/ my mom -- good real estate investment time). We're looking at the hilldale area which is about 2.5 miles from the school, and very trendy and fun. there is a grocery store about two blocks away, and the mall is about a block, but not a big mall, more like a ... trendy boutique-y mall. pretty much i would give my left arm to live there (i need the right for surgery!) the listings we;re looking at are hilldale row (http://www.liveathilldale.com/). I like this area because it seems good for professionals -- very young neighborhood it seems like.

I know a lot of the students also live in the old university neighborhood.

If you're looking to live a bit further from the school than just down the road, and in a more "family oriented" area, i think fitchburg is really taking off, but thats about a 30 min commute.

Thats kinda what i figured! Yes its accredited just like edinburgh, rvc etc, but its 5 years instead of 4. It seems like a great school! I am leaning that way...it takes me forever to make decisions!

And "amen" on it all running together - try keeping the 14 schools you applied to straight! 😛

I'll be at the Open House--the South has to represent since Vagirl can't come 🙂
I love how people in WI think my accent is so cute--If only they could hear theirs!

I was pretty impressed too with all the info they sent in the packet, all those phone numbers to call especially.

And Congratulations! to everyone, I feel honored to be in such good company!

I'll be at the Open House--the South has to represent since Vagirl can't come 🙂

Have fun! I'm sad I won't be able to go. But you guys have to share all of the great things you find out while you're there, okay?

just got back to school....

waitlisted. but #111 on the list. I would've dealt with a rejection better! This is saying 'hey you're really good enough, but 2x our class size has to decline admission before we get you in'...They shouldnt have waitlists that long...🙁🙁🙁

Hey, sorry shemari 🙁 are you waiting on any other schools? i seem to have forgotten ...

i have an interview at purdue this friday, and I'm still waiting to hear from Penn and tennessee..congrats to you though! i just read that you got in!!

I agree! I was trying to figure out how 85 people declined acceptance one year (per their letter - which I admit kind of got my hopes up despite my high waitlist number) and it must've been when they had to find someone the first week of classes, and lots of people were either already somewhere else (like hopefully we will be!) or weren't able to make the move that quickly.

And congrats to wi girl! Thanks for keeping us entertained while we were waiting to hear! Now on to MN...:luck:

I did some digging around on old threads and it looks like last year they went to the mid-40s on the OOS waitlist by the end of April. Not sure how far down the list they went in total, though.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes!! I'm very excited. Pulling my app to Penn; still waiting on UMN, so we'll see how that goes. Glad I could entertain everyone. I'm 85% sure that I'll be going to UW, so I MAY pull my app to UMN too. I've been doing lots of chatting w/ my mom, and we've realized that with the extra 100K debt for UMN I could pay for a condo (or at least half of one), so we're looking at property in madison, and it's the school i've wanted to go to for three years ... i wish that the open house was sooner, so i could make a decision about my app at MN! boo ...

wi girl, don't pull your app at UMN! Even if you're 85% sure you're going to UW at this point, don't react in haste and do something you regret. You've already done the interview, now just wait your sweet time - it's out of your hands. Don't let other people pressure you into withdrawing from UMN just 'cause you're pretty sure you don't want to go there. Only withdraw if you're 100% sure! It's your time and money you've put into this process - don't throw it away on a whim!

No, no I wasn't going to pull my app. ESPECIALLY not since I'll hear from them before visiting UW -- what happens if I for some reason HATE it there? Thanks for the words of encouragement though hoodle. 🙂 I love how we're all counciling each other through this process; I AM going to pull my app from Penn though. No offense, but st. paul is about as urban as this midwestern girl gets.

how many people are on the waitlist? I'd like to think that whoever typed my letter accidentally fell asleep on the '1' key and it was supposed to say 1 or 11 and not 111....haha...oy vey.

PS: wivet -- I'm really starting to lean towards WI again, I just need to be shown how GREAT a school is and be able to see myself there ... maybe you can help with that? 🙂

Well, I'll certainly try!

Hoodle, what a ringing endorsement!! I actually live 15 mins from the vet school in madison, so I'm well aware of the WONDERFULNESS of madison (although, as I said, that was a great endorsement).
Kinda surprised you wouldn't just live with your parents then... would save you a lot of money plus they would be able to take care of your dog when you're studying at odd hours.

ALSO, there's the world's largest indoor water park less than 45 minutes away! :wow: kalahari water park (yes, its african-themed), perhaps the most bizarre structure in all of the united states, but no less fun to play in!:laugh:

funny you mention it, there's actually a animal behavior conference being sponsored by the animal behavior club at the Kalahari (and, as students we don't have to pay!)

Also, of note wi girl: in the accepted students package thingy, under the "info to invted applicant" , section 2, they say "The approach to clinical instruction in our curriculum is based on the assumption that the student is better prepared if clinical instruction beings early in the professional education process" etc etc, they go on to describe how they do this. Additionally, if you look at the "Veterinary medical curriculum and instructors" they have course 623-570, "Health, history, and Physical exam" which runs through both semesters one and two of your first year. THat sounds to me like they are teaching you how to do basics in the clinical setting from the first semester! Of couse, it might be a joke (meeting once a semester or something)... any current WI students with insider info?

Well, some might consider it a "joke". Like I've said before, you get out of it what you put into it. They provide the animals and explain how to do a proper exam, whether you want to stay and repeat it on everyone dog, etc is up too you. We are also welcome downstairs whenever and on occassion get to help with stuff. Oh, and there's always club activities that usually involve animal handling. For example, yesterday there was sheep ultrasounding.

Those are some really nice condos... need a roomy!?

If those are the condos you're looking at, there's actually a grocery store practically next door, one on the other side of University, and one about 2-3 blocks down. Never have to worry about not having time to drive to the grocery store!

Also, I know a few people live in the Middleton area (west of Hilldale)

Oh, as for the "extra-curr." I'm sure something can be arranged. I know plenty of people that would be more than happy to go out after the open house.

at least you're being optimistic!

actually, we're already planning on me dropping off my dog to them if I have a bad exam week or something.

Those are some really nice condos... need a roomy!?

Umm ... actually ... there aren't any two bedrooms left. However, that being said, I know my mom would rather go w/ two bedrooms, we were just not too sure about finding a roommate and all that. if you weren't joking (fine if you were) then maybe .... ever since they started building those, i've wanted to live in them, so pretty much for the last 3 or so years. i LOVE that area of town.

Also, I know a few people live in the Middleton area (west of Hilldale)

I PMed you about this, but any particular buildings you know of?

Oh, as for the "extra-curr." I'm sure something can be arranged. I know plenty of people that would be more than happy to go out after the open house.

Sign me up!! Last time I was at the school (thanksgiving of 2006) apparently some exam was just finishing. I met a few of the cornell alum profs. and were chatting in the hallway and some students walked by, and the prof was asking about them all going out to celebrate a finished exam. I LOVED that the prof was like, you earned it! I think he was teaching LA ambulatory, but he didn't usually .... i wish i remembered his name!! Anyhow, as long as i have a cab back to cherokee, i'm good to go!

Hey,

I am trying to get a feel for housing prices in Madison, but I don't know what areas to avoid in searches; i.e. places where you can buy a mansion, but there are drug dealers on the corners. I am not sure if I am going to buy or rent, but I want to take a look at costs before I make my school decisions.

I plan on staying in a house if I buy for all 4 years, so any up and coming neighborhood names would be good too.

I can't do condos because of the dogs in my avatar!

avoid the s. park street area. I've heard it's a little shady, esp. at night! The east side of town is def. more undergradish if that makes any sense. If I were you, I'd start looking west of campus. Lot of cute, friendly neighborhoods heading out that way.

Avoid anything on the south side -- pretty much mansions w. drug dealers. hmm ... in my searches, i'm sticking to 53715, 53705, and 53717 for zip codes. the whitney way area might be good for houses, which is zip code 53705. they have houses tucked up in there which are nice, but pretty big (3br). wivet just reccommended a neighborhood, maybe she knows the streets/zip ...

fargeese: I know you have a few admissions ... are you thinking you'll head to UW?? or still gathering info?

Gathering info at this point. I am conflicted between whether the school you go to matters enough to pay OOS tuition (though WI's is fairly low in that respect), and my hunch that WI is going to have a better LA program than other schools... would I rather downhill or cross-country ski. Lots of things to consider.

I figure these schools took months to decide on admissions, they can wait couple of weeks while I figure out what to do. It's not like they are going to have any trouble filling my spot anyway!

Too too true! There is *some* downhill in WI, but probably piddly compared to whatever you are used to. I do know that their LA program is amazing, for what its worth. I love how there are like three of us on this thread looking at buying property now ...

PS: Do you really expect to have time to ski?!?! that's what breaks are for ... 🙂

I was joking a little about the skiing, and I am aware that downhill skiing in the midwest consists of skiing down the snowpiles the plows make.

Buying property is a great idea in my opinion if you can afford it, since you'll be sitting on the property for 4 years, can rent out rooms for mortgage help, soft real estate market etc. Then again if you bought a house in Detroit 4 years ago you would be screwed at this point, so I guess I need to check out Madison's housing projections too!

I am aware that downhill skiing in the midwest consists of skiing down the snowpiles the plows make.

The sad part is that sometimes they make decently sized piles -- good enough for sledding, at least. Clearly, I have never lived in a state that has REAL mountains.

what do we know about ability to become an instate resident after a year or two?
also--parts of wisconsin are surprisingly hilly. not mountains by any means, but on your cross-country skis, you might pick up quite a bit of speed going down some hills. i know they hosted collegiate bicycle racing nationals a few years ago and the road race course was very hilly.

what do we know about ability to become an instate resident after a year or two?

I'm pretty sure that it's impossible. You have to work in the state for a year w/o academic purposes, etc. Last year's thread has some comments on this, which i would summarize as: i've never met anyone who tried. But, hopefully I'm wrong.

Ah, yes, the hilly parts are because our entire state wasn't covered by the last glacier, it formed pockets, which resulted in the kettle-moraines (there's a trail) and the bluffs and fun rock formations at devil's lake. there are some largish hills there (which is the skiing i was referring to in an earlier post). you are now dismissed from 4th grade geography class -- good times back then, when that was all i needed to know about science. 🙂

Anything near Badger Rd, Allied Dr/Todd Dr area is pretty sketchy. West Side is the 'nicer' side of town, in general, which probably means things are a little more expensive. The East Side tends to be a little more rundown/older area of town (although not terribly sketchy). Campus area houses tend to be POS's for what you would pay.

Madison's a fairly big town, so if you're trying to avoid the huge slew of undergrads, you'd only need to avoid downtown.

What about in-state tuition via spousal residency? Anyone have any idea?

My hubby & I booked our plane tickets to visit - I can't wait, I'm so excited😀

We will be looking at some places while we are there. Thank you to everyone from the Madison area for your advice, it is very helpful. Even though I grew up in Wisconsin, I'm not at all familiar with the Madison area - other than going out on State St once with my friend who lived there😛

Ok, I must say I am SO JEALOUS! I knew I wasn't going to get in there but I'm still jealous of you lucky ones who did! You earned it! 😀

Thanks Carrbear! I'm jealous of your IS UMN tuition -- I'm probably going to UW because of the price difference -- the grass is always greener, right? 🙂 I know you'll hear good news from them, i have a feeling -- and hopefully iowa will move quickly too!!

Did anyone else get an email from Lynn today?? About flights to Madison??

Does anyone know how many they have taken off the waitlist in years past? I'm #46 and just curious if that means I'm almost definitely out of the running...

So I've decided that I'm going to head out to Wisconsin to check it out. I can't make the open house due to a work conflict, but had a whacky idea. Is there anyone else who can't make it out to the open house but still wants to visit? If so, would anyone like to see if a few of us can coordinate going at the same time another weekend? So let me know if there are any takers! I was thinking of trying to go out the weekend of the 8th/9th! Yay! 🙂

I'm going out the 11-12th, during my spring break. They were very accomodating as far as making arrangements, but it probably helps that it's during the week.

Just called Lynn about observing some classes (I know fargeese did too) and she KNEW who I was and referenced an email that I had sent a few days ago. I've been through sorority rush, so I know that admissions people know us all inside and out by now, but it still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Just thought I'd reiterate my WI love, as if anyone had a doubt -- and put out there that we CAN observe classes friday morning, and she's going to get back to me with times/classes/etc. so PM me (or call Lynn) if you're interested! 🙂

Not that anyone's responded to this, but just in case...it's more likely I'll make a trip out there March 21/22/23. If anyone else who can't make it to the open house wants to go then, too, PM me. We could tour the school together or something. 🙂

VAgirl: not sure if it makes any difference too you, but that's the end of our spring break. So, if you wanted to be able to talk with other students, etc. there prob. won't be many around. Also not how sure how well staffed the office, etc will be since it's Easter weekend, so you might want to call. Just a thought... Hope you enjoy your visit whenever it is though!

Oh shoot. Easter is never on my radar screen. I was just looking for cheaper tickets. And suppose the weekend before is the beginning of spring break, then. Hrm... I may have to look into other options.

Thanks for the info.

yup, break is from the 15th-23rd. hopefully you find a weekend that works!

So wivet2011 and I were chatting and trying to decide what we should all do for a SDN get-together at/after the open house. So, quick straw poll: (a) who's interested in getting together? (b) what should we do? suggestions currently are "out" to wherever the vet students go; eat/wander state street (weather pending); ummm ... ??

So reply if you're interested so we can get something together! (I know, this is super early, I just have already been thinking about it, because I'm going to HI for a week the week before that, which is in 1.5 weeks ... so I'm really hoping for time to pass quickly).
