Anyone else dying to hear from UW-Madison!?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, for those who care, I'm going up to visit the school on Monday March 24th, so if anyone else wants to come, too, that's my plan. 🙂

Sorry we are going to miss you Vagirl, but I'm interested in what's happening after the Open House. I can ask my friend I'm staying with from college what's hip but then again we are both old so maybe you younguns should figure something out!

😍

Us younguns? Fargeese, I think I'll be very sad if you don't go to WI. I feel like you might be one of those people who just brightens my day with what you say. 🙂

I suppose it all depends: do we want to hit a bar later? Do we want to do dinner of some sort? I don't have a preference at all, so maybe you .... "olduns" (not that you are, just as opposition to your younguns comment) might? It might not be up your alley to hit a bar? Maybe it is? I live there, and know what's up (except the bar scene, but its WI, I can't believe that I would find it lacking) so I don't know if you OOS-ers want more of a "cool things to do" w/ state street, or .... ?? This is why I started the straw poll early .... too much to decide! 🙂

VA girl: You'll have to let us know how it goes! I hope you really love it, to be honest. We'll miss you at the me-and-fargeese party (so far).

Yea, I think I'm really going to like it. Which of course will make everything that much harder, but in a good way. I hope you guys have a good time. I'll actually be there on the Monday of the week with the open house, so I'll just be missing you guys. Have fun! We'll all have to swap notes afterwards. 🙂

Count me in, My wife and I are up for pretty much anything...maybe we can ransack a few students and buy them a few beers/dinner if they hang out with us for a night....

Sounds like a plan .... ransack the students though? Hmmmm .... 😀

I almost want to PM everyone in the admit for WI list, and get their take. There really is only 12 of us; VA girl is going a different weekend. So is epitastic, which leaves us with 10.

I mailed my OOS decline in a couple of days ago, so someone will get in from the waitlist. 🙂

Yep, sorry I won't get to meet all ya'll. (can you tell I've been living in the south for 3 years?) We may very well be classmates next year.

hey everyone,

I'm definitely going to the open house, too. I hope to see some of you there!

(a) yay for having epitastic as a classmate!

(b) Pika -- did you get your letter from MN yet? I'm waitlisted ... but yay for going to WI open house! Are you interested in meeting up afterwards?? 🙂D 😀 😀)

I'd love to meet up after the open house. I'll be bringing along my hubby too😀

I might be coming to the open house... I'll keep you guys updated!

yay! well, I know you have some tough decisions to make! If you have any questions, pm me (i know the area very well, maybe not as much about the school yet).

keep us updated, so I can add you to the fun fargeese-jambalac-rebeki-me party!

pika -- you said you're going to the open house, want to meet up after in above party? it'll be fun ...... (this is where you give in to peer pressure via internet, because if i meet you in person, you will not be able to turn me down😀)

So I've already roped a few other first years into hanging out and showing you guys around... should be good. Sounds like there's even a few non- SDNers that were accepted that want to hang afterwards (don't worry, we'll convert them 😉)

Oh, you should have heard me at UMN -- I was talking SDN like it was water in the desert. 😀

Yay for more people!! Just so wivet isn't left out, the offical party name (to date) is wivet-fargeese-jambalac-rebeki-me party!

oh, and pika, didn't mean to post twice asking you ... i didn't read my other post, and forgot I asked. i swear, i'm not crazy -- i just want to meet all you nice people! 😀 and maybe hang out -- and have a vodka tonic. or dinner. or whatever.

Yes! I'm one of the OS students that received acceptance! For those of you who have not heard back yet, the packet said we have to give them our decision by April 15th. This date is so they know haw many hold people they can then offer positions to. If we do not respond by the 15th we lose our spot and another deserving student gets a chance. I do not know a whole lot about the school but look forward to seeing it on the 28th. Still waiting on 2 other schools. This app. process is nerve racking. I get interviews at school where they don't take a lot of OS students and no's from schools that have a larger % of OS students GO Figure. Wisconsin must be Great they said YES!!:hardy: Good luck to everyone still waiting.:luck::luck::luck:

Yay! Another OOS-er! I've felt the same thing sometimes -- but I only applied to three schools, so to a lesser extent. WELCOME! I think everyone has their decisions from WI though .... great rendition of the letter, however 😀

I will be at the open house. I will also be getting over massive jet lag so I don't know if I will want to go out afterward or not. I would say 80% chance I will want to go out with everyone. Looking forward to meeting you all during the day's activities at least.

Obviously it's about time for wi to be brought back up! 😀 big surprise that I'm posting, right?

Lynn just emailed me (well, like an hour ago -- but still, 7 central? that's dedication!) and let me know which classes the profs are okay with visiting students sitting in on:

Here are the two courses offered that morning --

8:50am veterinary pharmacology lecture

9:55am molectular & metabolic basis of medicine

She also hopes that I'll find them interesting .... I certainly hope so too! Apparently there will be time between the second class and the noon start time of the open house; we're free to explore the school and campus, and she recommends we get some lunch. (I do too! Drinks on an empty stomach = bad idea! 🙂) If you're going to stop in, I'd let her know (just drop an email) so that they expect all ... 10 or so SDN kids to show up!

Yay WI!

greetings from madison ya'll. i really like it here. i will post more tomorrow when i have seen more, but so far i have happy thoughts about uw. hoorah for liking a school!

which is not to say that i haven't liked other schools...or that i'm hard to please. just that i like madison a lot so hooray!

Yay Epitastic! Are you going to be my classmate?? 😀

i don't know yet.

but i'm sitting in my rental car and using some stolen downtown wireless. i have to think about things a little more, but the fact that UW really goes out of their way to make a prospective student feel welcome really adds to my impression of the school. everyone i met with was just great. the student who i spoke with this morning even dressed up for me. okay that made me feel totally silly, but hey.

Hi Wi Girl!

Of course I would like to meet up! I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner. I just hadn't checked back on the Wisconsin thread. It would be great to meet you and dish about Wisconsin!

I did get into Minnesota. But I am sure if you are number 11 on the waitlist you will get in too.

Pika: My thought is that I would get in (from previous posts, it seems like the mn list moves A LOT) -- but we're already about to make an offer on property, and I'm quite positive that I'll love madison, so .... yeah. I'm just waiting until the open house to officially proclaim myself as UW c/o 2012 ... I kinda feel like I owe mn the chance to wait until I visit the school officially.

Epitastic: (a) I love stealing wireless. (b) If you go to a penara (sp. but the bread company), you get free wireless. just an idea 😀 oooh -- you got a dressed up one! Kinda like payback for having to go to interviews in suits when its freezing cold, and all the students get to wear sweatshirts ... glad you enjoyed it!

I'm definitely interested on sitting in on classes, too. Should I e-mail Lynn?

Probably. It's most likely unnecessary, but just so that she can give rough estimates on numbers to the professors, one of those nice courtesy things (if I were a prof, I wouldn't mind, but would want to know if 50 people were showing up, you know?) 😀 Yay! It seems like most people don't have a preference, but would you rather do (a) dinner (b) dinner&drinks (c) drinks for the big SDN fun party? And if anyone else has a strong preference ....

I heard (through the SDN grapevine aka wivet) that they had a svm great dane social event tonight (great dane is a pub/grill in madison). I love the idea of vet school mixers -- what a great way to meet cute residents 😀 (I've been watching too much grey's)

:laugh::laugh: I wish that was a great way to meet cute residents! Sorry, most of the guys at the SVM are married or seriously involved (students and residents alike... well, at least the cute ones anyway)

But aren't the not-cute ones nicer?

I vote for drinkies myself, plus or minus dinner. My excuse is that I need the carbs for running but somehow the beer always finds my glass when I am not training for anything. Plus, we're probably all dorks because we studied so hard to get into vet school, so a little social lubrication might be in order, heh.

Speaking of, if anyone wants to run Sat. or Sun. morning, I have to do 15 miler for my training plan (I have a race in April). Anyone? Hello?

Depends... I have come across some not so nice, not so good looking guys  I think the cute, nice guys are just really hard to find 🙁 (if anyone knows where they all hide, please let me know!)

Wow... 15? now maybe if I was still cross country training, but 15!? (oh, what am I talking about, that used to be a nice Sun morning jog, always followed by donuts 😛)

Well I'm dating a good looking, nice one, but I had to go through a lot of toads to earn this one

I don't run 15mi either usually, it is just that I have a race mid April, so I have to do my last long run to stay on schedule. After that I'll go back to the donuts sans the insanely long run.

So when I read 15 miles, I first gasped (ummm ... 15?? MILES??) and then started laughing hysterically picturing myself doing that. Background: I actually haven't ran in ... years, as I had knee surgery and, as my doctor put it, "no running for you ... unless it's for your life .... and you better hope it's not too far, your knees wouldn't last longer than about 2 miles". the elliptical and I are great friends. 😀

Oh man ... really?! NO GUYS?! I mean, single ones .... bummer. I suppose I figured that at least ONE of the .... 20 or so in our class would be single. So, over the whole school, that's like ... 4? I suppose I'll have to go hit on all the med students then .... doesn't penn have a graduate school big mixer deal (vet+med+?? Law?)? Can we get on that for planning?

Addition: How about dentists? If I snag one of those, then I'll have a rich husband to pay back my loans? Hmm ... Or MBA candidates. They might be good too ....

(ah ... I was just kidding about the rich husband comment. Not that it wouldn't be nice, but obviously not a major factor in choosing a guy. Just my preemptive I'm not shallow I promise statement.)

You don't want to date your classmates anyway. Things turn out badly and then you have to spend the next 3.5 years in the same room with them. Much better to go over to the engineering school, they're usually 90% men and desperate to meet women. Did I mention the SO has a BS in Physics and a Masters in Math? He hadn't seen a woman in years,

Of course the last part is a stereotype, but what I said at first is true; as my momma always put it, Don't s*** where you eat.

Oh, and another gem of my mom's: It is just as easy to love a rich man as it is a poor man. So go get that dentist, Wi Girl! 🙂

The med school's just down the way... The law school and business school are a little bit more of a hike. At the beginning of the year, we have the Malpractice Ball (med, vet, law, and I think MBAs as well).

Ah, that is exactly what I need (this Malpractice Ball). Perfect. Fargeese -- I think I've said this before, but I really hope you pick UW; how else will I get by without your gems of wisdom? 😀

Oh, and another gem of my mom's: It is just as easy to love a rich man as it is a poor man.

Ah, yes, I recall hearing that one from my mom back in the day, also. Despite the fact that she TOTALLY ignored her own advice. I mean, my parents are very comfortable now, but back when they met, my dad was a poor engineering grad student who didn't have enough money to even feed himself properly. One of those "do as I say, not as I do" things. 😉

Getting with a grad student in a good field like engineering is like making a future investment, she was sticking with the plan. 😉

Ok so I beleive my fiance and I will probably be up for drinks & dinner afterward. We have friends that live out there that we want to meet sometime but as we are staying til Sunday it shouldn't make a diffrence.

I'm very excited for the upcoming visit🙂 Here's my question...What are you wearing for the tour? I was thinking business casual😕

I know there's been a lot of talk about what to wear for interviews, but this isn't an interview. On the other hand, I don't want to look too casual either.

I was thinking the same thing with the business casual idea. My wife and I discussed it and thought it would be the safest course.

But let's get to the REAL issue here...it appears somebody has broken the bubble for the University of Wisconsin on the "Class of 2012--final decision" thread. You've been holding out on us rebeki!!! You Badger you!!!

Hahahaha - Wisconsin is my one and only😍 so I sent in my acceptance form and made my final decision!

Hopefully, the rest of you will follow my lead 😉

I was thinking along the same lines of business casual.. Can't wait to see everyone!

I wore jeans last year and didn't feel out of place, if that's of any help.

Oh man! Business casual?? I was going to wear my jeans and a oxford or polo shirt -- ie what I'd wear to class. Can we make a unanimous decision to NOT wear business casual? 🙂

I'm going, and I'm definitely dressing "comfy but put together".

From my visiting experience last week, I would say definitely don't worry about what you wear. I mean, feel free to look nice, but don't worry about it. They WANT you. (it felt nice to be wanted!)

😎:idea:Yay for jeans and an oxford shirt! Count me in! Much better than bus. casual. :hardy::hardy:

 I know it is a week away but I am soooo excited about touring UW-madison. I interviewed at U Tenn on Wednesday and will not find out results until the beginning of April. I plan on using this visit to help me make a decision as to which school I prefer if I get the choice. I'm also still waiting on U Penn to get back to me. 😱nothing like making us planners wait for a descision then have to make our choice in no a short period of time. 😀 Happy to be accepted anywhere though & Esp. at UW.

I'm really excited too! I'm coming in at about noon thursday; I have a job interview at an emergency clinic for the summer/school year that afternoon, then I plan on spending lots of time with my pup! Classes/open house/drinks&dinner friday (yay for meeting new people!) and then last look at condos/making an offer on one saturday.

Pretty much, this weekend will be me getting my life together for the next four years! Kinda scary! But SUPER exciting too!

Congrats cows on an interview at U Tenn; are you on hold at Penn, or in that awkward haven't heard anything?
