Anyone hear from Baylor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called up , and they said no decisions made.

I could easily see them being in a similar situation to UTSW, where they gave out all their acceptances to #'s 1-X on their ranked list well before March 15 or whenever the date that they normally give out the big batch of acceptances. Of course, just about everyone who was offered a spot accepted, and they're now probably holding onto this spot until May 15.

I'm afraid that the admissions office is saying they have spots available b/c they have a pretty good idea of how many students will withdraw on May 15, and are slowly handing out acceptances as acceptees withdraw pre-May 15th. I don't know though; that's just my hypothesis. If this holds true, I'm sure there will be a lot of movement post-May 15. I'm just curious to know when they plan to inform us of waitlist or rejection status.

The lack of information from Baylor is rediculous. I need to find housing at the school that accepted me soon, but I'm still waiting to hear ANYTHING from Baylor. If I'm not going to get in, great, just let me know so I can put money down on my house elsewhere. It's unfair to keep people in the dark like this. At least let us know if we're going to be waitlisted.

Also, at least keep the secretaries informed!

yeah its almost APRIL!

I interviewed there 7 months ago and still not a peep.

i TOTALLY 100% AGREE...
at this poitn..just tell me if i have no choice darn it!

Anyone know how much waitlist movement Baylor typically has each year?

from what i remember from interview weekend, i think dr. michael said they only took 8 ppl from the waitlist last year =(

It looks like I'm SOL.

The way I understand it is that waitlist=rejection (being waitlisted at Baylor is just a nicer way to let you know that you won't be going to school at Baylor)

Overall, I'm not disappointed at not getting in, but I am disappointed at the lack of communication. I was the first interview day!!!! Do you get to a point where going to Baylor isn't worth being treated so poorly in the application process. Should you go to a place instead where they are respectful enough to keep you informed, or to a place where they really want you?

Well, I'm surprised to hear everyone say that so few people get off the waitlist. I always thought that Baylor accepts about 100 people of their waitlist. They have a class of 168, and accept about 300 people out of their interviews. In fact, this is what Dr. Michaels focused on in his talk, namely that our changes were pretty good that we'd get in (about 40%, after interviewing). And, I know that about 300 acceptances is on the literature Baylor puts out, whether on their website or on a brochure. So where are people coming up with 8 people moved off their waitlist? I've still been under the impression that they have about 30 seats open (probably a bit less by now), and that they will have at least 100 other people to accept to actually fill the class!

I understand your logic but 300 offers for 168 acceptances does not necessarily translate into 130 spots coming off the waitlist. Most schools over accept to fill their class initially, expecting a certain number of withdrawals. They start accepting off the official waitlist after the number of accepted people actually drops below the number for the class.

Now with Baylor, and here for the most part I'm only speculating, we are all on a kind of "waitlist" from the beginning in the sense that we are put on a list and some are taken off the top each week that there are interviews. I remember awhile back that the statistic that 30% of the class had yet to be filled was cited; I think that was only because the set number of people had yet to be accepted after the last few interview days. And I'm sure it didn't mean 30% of 168 places were left; it most likely meant that 30% of whatever number Baylor believed they needed to fill their class this year were left.

Plus say for some reason no one is turning around and withdrawing after a Baylor acceptance. Or least in a higher percentage than in previous years. Obviously the adcom would need to modify how many spots are being offered. If this is the case, then perhaps we'll see more movement after May 15th than in previous years (that last sentence is PURELY speculation so no one get their hopes up)

I'm not holding my breath.

i think the waitlist movement is highly variable. Some years, like last year maybe, there was little movement for whatever reason. But it seems like common sense that there will be a lot of movement soon because of how the texas application process went down this year and because of the extreme delay of other schools in issuing acceptances. Who knows tho? the admissions office can't say b/c they have no idea how many people are holding multiple acceptances, they don’t know how many people will elect to go else where. They're just in the dark as everyone else is. The best anyone can do is hold out hope and wait for that letter/call.

4:28 pm. call from the dean. omg!!!!

Congrats!

This is especially encouraging since according to your mdapps you interviewed on the first date.

talked to admissions office today. the adcom has not finalized decisions yet. she did not/would not indicate when this would be done. since it has gone from the first of march, to mid march, to the end of march, who knows.

I think Baylor's definition of "finalized decisions" is "orientation has started." It may in fact be "classes have started." I'm extremely fortunate not to be hanging on by a thread for my status (accepted elsewhere) -- my heart goes out to y'all who are. Maybe I'll hear about the time I'm applying for residencies...

I still remember the interview day (back in Nov), when I was told I could receive a decision in as little as 2 weeks.

No ****. This is utterly ridiculous. I interviewed the first week of SEPTEMBER. As many good things I've heard about Baylor, the fact that they are so rude and inconsiderate to applicants (i.e. not letting them know their status after 7 MONTHS) really makes me wonder how well I would be treated there.

In any case, for me the point is moot. I just made an offer on a house in Dallas, so I pretty much know that I am not going to Baylor, even if accepted. The only reason why I haven't withdrawn my application is because I want to see (to satisfy my own curiousity) if I manage to get in.....

Haha, I was in the group right after yours (mid-Sept). Still nothing! And yet I heard from UChicago, another school with rolling admissions, less than 8 weeks after interviewing...

I think Baylor should stop "rolling" and just tell everyone in mid-March, like most top 10 schools do. (Or, I think they do? I know HMS and Penn do.)

I emailed Dr. Michael about my status due to the fact that I needed to find housing at another school quickly. So far, after a week, no response (I'm not at all surprised). I also interviewed on the very first day, and nothing. Next week I'm going to put an offer down for a house elsewhere if I don't hear anything.

Why do all of you guys "have" to decide on housing and put in offers on houses this week? Many people remain on waitlists well past the May 15 deadline and await plans for housing until well after then. Is Texas that different?

Not sure for everyone in this thread but some MD/PhD programs start in June. And if your housing is lost after graduating in May...

I think in this case the issue of "having" to find housing is situational for both posters and not an issue across the board in Texas.

Don't talk to Humble that way! He's my friend 😀

Fair enough...

good thing you're satisfied with that answer lol

i still don't see where you get you air of entitlement from to be tactlessly questioning other people's decisions regarding their own personal lives

Someone had to stand up for the Baylor admission directors. It must come out of my need to support the unrepresented, and/or my love of playing devil's advocate...

Baylor hates both of us 😡

Congrats! What area did you decide on?

So are you comparing the Baylor admissions directors to the devil???

Yes. Of course.

That's all I needed to know (since there is really no need to defend someone who you have already admitted to be evil by calling them the devil). Moral of the story, you need to "SHHHHHHHH". That means don't talk... or in this case post.

Go back to the Duke Thread. You've let your 20 post/day average over there slip lately. Then go check out this informative article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm

received today via email....

Dear XXXX:

Thank you for maintaining an interest in our medical school. We are continuing to accept students and in approximately two weeks we will form an alternate list for use in deciding on further acceptances.

Sincerely,
Dr. Lloyd M. Michael
Senior Associate Dean of Admissions

i received the same email. contact makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 🙂

in the meantime....would someone mind filling me in on what's going on with the whole "texas school acceptance scandal"? sorry for not having a clue, but i'm OOS....

previous to this year, all acceptances by public medical schools were awarded on match day. students ranked the medical schools where they interviewed and they were siphoned into their top choice that also chose them.

utsw pushed for pre-match offers this year to better compete with baylor and prestigious oos schools. on november 15, schools could begin extending offers, with the idea that some offers would also be reserved for the match. it was a major guessing for the medical schools as to what the matriculation rate would be based on these offers, and how many to give out prior to the match in the first place. utsw decided to extend all offers prematch and therefore had no spots to offer on match day, which angered many students hoping to go there. essentially all offers extended post prematch acceptances are off the waitlist.

so this is the scandal...in a nutshell...i guess...

Why is it scandalous to partake in the system the rest of the country does?😕
If someone gets into UTSW, they get in to UTSW. I don't see what timing has to do with it.
