APPIC Internship Phase II 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh man i relate! i ranked 7.. spent sooo much time and energy and money...i'm still processing the fact that I didn't end up anywhere I honestly wasn't expecting this..90% of my cohort matched..really struggling with motivation for sites I'm not very excited about.. I want to work with kids in behavioral hospital or juvenile justice settings..most of these options for Match II are college counseling, VA's, or peds..I'm in the same space so I don't have advice but just to say you're not alone!
I saw Copper Lake/Lincoln Hills is on the list and it specifically says juvenile, so it sounds like it would be perfect for you! (Just in case you didn’t see it on the list). But yes, lots of college counseling on there.

Hi!!! We have similar interests 🙂 I can’t remember exactly, but I believe this is juvenile justice, so I’d check it out! I remember wanting to apply there but ultimately taking Hawaii off my list of states.

I don’t get this at all, how one can rank so many sites and not match, while some people match to their top 3 :/ I refuse to believe all of us were able to get this many interviews and then acted like total weirdos at the interviews.
There are about 1% of folks with ~10 interviews who don't match. I don't think this necessarily suggests that the folks who did not match acted like weirdos. I could easily see someone who applied to all competitive/desirable sites slipping through the cracks since everyone fights for those spots.

In the cohort above mine there were 2/20 people that ranked 10 and 13 respectively and didn't match (they're great clinicians and matched in Phase II), plus quite a few this year ranking 7+ and not matching. It is weird that it's only 1%, but hey I guess that's why we're in this thread lol

I do have questions about the Post Match Vacancy, even after reading about it on APPIC. Is it likely to obtain a position over this period? Are sites likely to rank more applicants in Phase II to avoid going into that process?

I was always aware of Phase II not being the worst thing in the world, and have found some sites I may even like better than in Phase I, but I have to admit not matching again and entering this "Post Match" void would really hurt/be confusing...

I had a friend who had to participate in the post match vacancy and ended up at a site they loved. They also obtained a very prestigious postdoc in a major city and had offers from other top notch sites.

I am finally part of the 1%! Ha

I was googling the Lincoln Hils and Hazelden because they looked intriguing and found this on the Lincoln Hills internship from 2017

"Four directors have overseen the complex's psychological internship program since August 2015. Each of the past three abruptly left amid misconduct allegations that included crude behavior with interns and producing erroneous intern evaluations. Two have surrendered their state licenses to practice. The third has been referred to licensing authorities for investigation.

The facilities' chief psychologist, Vincent Ramos, became the internship program’s director in August 2015. Three months later, he was fired for taking pictures of interns in a hotel room while wearing only his underwear and a T-shirt. He surrendered his state license to practice in March.

Wilson Fowle became the program’s interim director after Ramos but lasted just a month before a misconduct investigation prompted his departure, too. Internal investigators say he claimed to see inmates on days he didn't work. He retired before the investigation was complete and agreed last year to surrender his psychology license."

Has anyone that applied there this round able to offer any insight on how things seem now?

Hi all - I can certainly relate to the difficult emotions surrounding not matching in phase I. But, we got this!

Quick question...has anyone started to add new "designations" to the APPI? I noticed that my old sites are still listed on the application and cannot be deleted. I can add new sites (the ones I plan to apply to for phase II), but I am still in the process of finishing up my cover letters so I am not ready to "re-apply" just yet. Does anyone know if the "submission" is the same? I'm assuming that we have to click "pay now" even though there is no fee associated with phase II. Out of all of the information we have access to, I wasn't able to find the answer to this.

omg exactly, like not even one of the sites i interviewed with ranked me higher? either i need to really practice my interview skills or i just have really bad luck, or both. im looking forward to emailing the sites tomorrow to get any feedback i can use for Round Two

Actually was wondering about this too...It says on the page to delete designations no longer accepting applicants but I can't figure out how. Maybe we can contact APPIC customer support tomorrow they were helpful earlier in the process when I had to edit my APPI after the DCT had already signed off.

hey thank you!!

DOE i think is Department of Education so these are school based positions i think..Hazelden i think is a substance abuse treatment residential.. Devereux i think is also residential.. yes I checked out Casa Pacifica TAY good call ! :0) I think i need to open to any sites that work with youth general that is probably smart, i wish there was a way to filter child/adol options haha this is a lot of digging!

Being in phase II does make you question the whole matching process. One thing I realized is that maybe sites are not interviewing enough candidates and/or being too conservative in the amount of applicants ranked as there are a ton of accredited spots in current and previous phase II. I don’t think some TD understand that there is really an imbalance now, therefore they need to extend more invites/rank more applicants.

I think it might be helpful to contact APPIC support if we aren’t able to figure it out ourselves! I’ll be sure to share if I have any luck with it 🙂

Good idea!

Also, we are NOT to submit supplemental materials, correct?
Because all the instructions on APPIC are instructions for Phase I not Phase II...and I hope people aren't expecting supplemental reports.

Correct, we do not have to submit supplemental info! I read on the NMS website that if training directors want anything else, they have to communicate that through email.

Hello everyone,

I hope you all are doing well (as best you could) during this INSANE process!!! Ahhhh!

Just wanted to stop in and see if anyone has any insight on:
Marcus Autism Center and/or
Georgia Regional Hospital

Any feedback, interview tips, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

It seems like you only have to delete designations that you had not sent or ones to sites that have withdrawn from phase II...from what I gather you cannot delete designations already sent in phase I.

Someone from my program interviewed at Marcus and really liked it, but it was for a different track. It was their top choice, so I think that says a lot about the program!

Any advice from people who’ve been through this coping with all the emotions that are coming up? Honestly I just feel so terrible about myself for not matching. How is it the majority of people get their top 3 sites, and I didn’t even match when I ranked 10? I applied to competitive sites...but still. Idk. It’s hard to even motivate to get all these round 2 apps done in 5 days.
I didn't match in Phase I a few years back, and I'm happy to share what I did. Honestly, I spent that first day crying it out. I was miserable and I let myself be miserable. (I also talked to my TD, who was honestly useless, I think he was reading the APPIC website to me.) The next day I met a friend who did match for lunch, and it felt good to vent and review the list of sites with someone else, and enjoy her excitement about her site. I also posted about not matching on Facebook and talked to friends both inside and outside my program about it. That was harder than I expected in some ways, because I think I really did feel a sense of shame about not matching. However, if I hadn't done that, I wouldn't have gotten some really good feedback from my friends about how much they enjoyed working with me and knew from their experiences in clinic and practicum with me that I was a good clinician and that the system really did suck sometimes. (I think the toughest thing was going to practicum and knowing that one of my fellow students matched to my #1 site, knowing full well that she was actually kind of disappointed with it because she didn't want to move that far away.) That feedback really helped to keep me going when I absolutely wanted to throw in the towel on applying - it was like having someone do my cognitive restructuring for me. 🙂 I also did try to leave some time for self-care -seeing friends, eating good food, watching silly TV.

In the end, as devastated as I was at the time, it didn't end up mattering all that much. I actually got my APA-accredited internship during Post-Match Vacancy (it was a spot added to an existing site when they got a funding increase). I got a VA postdoc that I loved, and I'm now in my second VA position, in my hometown, working with a great team. I don't think anyone's ever asked me how I matched.

this is really helpful thank you!

Has anyone received feedback emails? Like if you emailed sites you didn't match at, to get feedback for Phase II? I'm hoping I get something useful

I emailed all 19 of my initial application sites for feedback and only received feedback from 1 site and it was nothing I could actually change. It seems like everyone is swamped with this process (training directors included) so I'm not holding my breath for feedback.

i emailed all the sites i interviewed at, heard back from about half so far. nothing useful. really stings when they say how much they could tell i was enthusiastic/interested...but i also think for me a big part of the problem was applying to sites/types of programs that were more competitive than i realized (or my mentors did)

yeah i was thinking that too..i didnt have any mediocre sites they were all intense..likely has something to do with it

Anyone here apply to an APA accredited VA where you interviewed/internshipped at, and are thinking “this place is terrible, would not recommend it to anyone” ?

trying to see if I should avoid anywhere else on my list

That's what I gathered as well!

I just submitted an application, and I got an email from APPIC saying "you have just submitted applications to the following designations" listing all of the sites from Phase I where I applied, and this new one...
I have no way to delete the Phase I sites from my application page. The sites aren't somehow getting all of my applications again right? I don't want to annoy anyone.

Hi folks!

I can’t imagine the grieving you all must be doing, but I can’t help but echo the thoughts of other posters. Matching in Phase II, or even not matching and taking another year, in no way defines your worth or skill. This process involves so much we can never know, and I have so much respect for so many colleagues that matched in Phase II, or even on their second or third tries.

I interviewed at two sites in Phase I that are on the Phase II list, and am happy to provide any insight!
UC Davis CAARE Center- I ranked this site, but a different track, as #1, and did not match with them. I loved the track I applied to, which was closely related to the available track, and can not recommend it highly enough!!

Hazelden's Mental Health Centers Youth and Family- ranked this site as #3 and had matched to my #2. I honestly would’ve been thrilled here. I absolutely loved them. If you like inpatient/residential teen SUDs stuff with what seems to be a very warm and supportive staff- definitely apply. Only turnoff (which was pretty big for me) was that they do not accept Medicaid and I am passionate about low income access to high quality services.

Didn’t interview, but as an undergrad I volunteered at Metropolitan State Hospital (they have three slots open), and am happy to share what I can.

Also @psychlife19 , re: Casa, I currently live in that area and my stipend is ~22,000. It’s not great, but with extremely tight budgeting, doable. Los Angeles actually has an even higher cost of living, and SF more than that. Even better if you can find roommates! I had a friend match to Casa this year, and I have also had some clients at past pracs who have interfaces with Casa Pacifica in some way- I don’t know a ton about the organization, but i LOVE LOVE LOVED those clients. So at least I can say if you are interested in adolescent forensics, the population will be very rewarding (moreso TAY than PCIT).

Also, I’m super jealous to see openings at Alaska Psych Intern Consortium/Norton Sound Health. I wanted to apply there and didn’t at the last minute. I am very happy with my match, but if you’re looking for a geographic adventure, could be cool!

Good luck everyone. Big hugs.

What are your thoughts on Metropolitan State Hospital? The stipend is pretty huge but I see last year only 49 people applied and now they have 3 spots open...feel free to message me if you don't want to share on here!

I don’t think so because I anxiety-applied to two extra sites after my original submission in phase 1 and it was like that too

The sites you applied to in phase I will have access to your applications for the next year. You won’t annoy them in this process by resubmitting. On our side the phase ii portal is a different login to keep applications from each phase separate.

Oh, helpful, thank you! I found it weird we (applicants) don’t have a separate portal for phase 2, at least you guys do.

I can only find 6 sites to apply to .. I am hearing we should be applying for 10-12?? I dont want to lessen my chances but im also hearing we should only apply to places we would be a good for for. curious to know where people are at with that..

I am applying to 11 sites (most VAs and a few hospitals). I am willing to move, so that allows for more options that might not be feasible for others. But I agree that you should only apply to sites that you are interested in attending! I read that there is no real recommended number of sites to include for phase II. I wouldn’t worry!

Has anyone heard of the Clifford Beers Clinic? I’m diving deep at this point! They do have 3 outpatient spots though

So I lived across from Clifford Beers when I was living in New Haven and doing a post-bacc at Yale. It's a lovely area and I 'm happy to share about living in New Haven. I believe they work with diverse and under served populations and I vaguely remember hearing good things about them.

As applications come to a close tomorrow morning, I think some may find it helpful to post about interview notifications as they come (if people feel comfortable, willing, and/or have the time lol) given that sites do not have to notify us if we do not receive an interview. I wish everyone the best of luck in this process and the whirlwind that I am sure the next two weeks will be. Don't forget to engage in self-care, we got this!

Keep in mind that most sites do rolling invites during this phase due to time constraints.

Does anyone have a sense of how quickly sites in Phase II begin to contact interviewees? (like for example how bout now...now, or now, or now, or now...)
Maybe not right now 🙂)) but I imagine very fast given the rankings need to be submitted in just over 2 weeks. I think my friend who participated in Phase 2 heard back within a couple days. Good luck!
