I was surprised to see so many VAs! And happy - I unfortunately did not match and would love to end up at a VA. Good luck to everyone in Phase II - it's disappointing but I'm hoping it works out for us all.

Thank you! I actually applied to them in Phase I but with a different track (Adolescent) will def try again. From the numbers on the appic directory it looks like they only interview exactly the people they will rank #1 (interview 5 people, 5 people match). So they're probably in phase II this year because someone who interviewed didn't rank them their #1.

So you have any experience with adults? You could say in your letter that you are very interested in health and would like to work with a new population in health psych (veterans, gero, women’s health, PC-MHI, general health psych were all rotations I saw at VAs). I think I saw some at Boys Town that were child/adolescent too. Good luck!

I would consider applying to VA's but my main experiences are in pediatric health psychology.

If you have some adult experience, that would be a plus. If your experience is primarily or exclusively child, some VAs might not see you as the best fit. I love working with veterans and it's a reason why I stayed after postdoc but it's definitely a challenging population to jump into if you've had limited adult experience.

I'd also think about whether you'd benefit from VA training as you'll need to speak to those factors in any revised essays that you submit.

A couple years ago, a former VA that I trained at decided to only rank a few of their Phase 2 applicants due to poor fit and was fine with leaving that spot unfilled if they didn't match with the candidates that they thought could be successful.

The programs had people they ranked but didn’t match with as well so it’s totally fine to feel this way and not acknowledge it. These programs are just as focused as you are now to find the best possible match.

It’s also totally common for people to re-widen their search to consider or re-consider sites they didn’t apply to initially. And going through Phase 1 likely means you learned some new things about this process and maybe even yourself/interests and are now acting accordingly given the available options. Good luck!

Someone commented on the phase I thread to keep in mind that the sites are feeling similarly because they didn’t fill their spots. I probably would just write a cover letter as if it were phase I personally… but it never hurts to check with your DCT. Remember, just sell the fit. Good luck!!!

For example if site A ranked 20 applicants, the algorithm would "search" for all these applicants and try to match them to site A. But all those applicants were already matched to sites B to U (i.e., said 20 applicants ranked sites B to U higher than site A, hence were matched to those places before site A). Thus, site A is left with no match.
I should add that it's not just site rank, but specific program/track rank too. There is 1 site participating in Phase II that I interviewed at, but a different track than what I applied/interviewed for. So if you interviewed somewhere but for a different track than the spot that is still vacant now in Phase II, you can definitely apply for this track in phase II.

Ah, I see, thanks. Yeah, looking at the list I noticed there were several sites with only neuropsych tracks vacant. Something as specialized like that seems like it would be more prone to this kind of thing that tracks that aren't quite as specialized or that offer some more general training experience.

Depends on what you reaching out for. Last year I reached out to a couple of them to ask specific questions related to their site or my application. For example, informing them I applied for another track and didn't receive an interview and if they will consider my application for the open track. Or asking if there was a hard requirement on assessment hours or specific experiences that I didn't have.

This information can be helpful. Some received emails that were less helpful. It depends on the site and the TD in my opinion. Asking for feedback on interview vs materials may also make a difference. If you asked for feedback on both and they dont reply by application deadline, they may reply before interviews begin.

If you are interested in VAs, then I would say apply. You can still talk about your health psychology experience and discuss in interviews about how adult experience would help fill a gap in your training.

Here is my generic advice to everyone.

First, as has already been discussed, reach out to the sites you intereviewed at and ask for feedback. You will receive responses, like those listed above, that provide a generic response. Some sites will still provide you valuable feedback. More likely this will be around your cover letters and application essays and not your interviews.

Second, please, please, please reach out to your friends, especially those in your program and have them review your cover letters and essays. I had a friend who refused help for phase 1. In phase 2 I read her essays and they were bad on multiple levels. We worked together to improve the essays as well as the cover letter.

Lastly, broaden your search. Again, as has been mentioned above, look in states or regions beyond where you previously looked. Look at hospitals or programs that you may not have considered previously.

Remember, sites don't want to go unmatched and have vacant positions. Even last year some sites did not fill positions at the end of phase 2.

Asking for feedback from sites you interviewed at may help but know that some will not reply right away or at all. At this time I would agree with others who have said to find a few trusted people to look over your materials and ask them if they can provide feedback within 24 hours given the quick turnaround. I organized the sites I was considering from best fit to least fit and then worked through the list and modified my cover letters.

I applied to 9. All of which I could see myself getting at least SOME of the training I want. If I don't match then **** it, I'll stay another year to be more competitive and get the training I feel I need/deserve.
