I am a sophomore in college and plan on attending DO school. I had some family issues come up and have failed several courses. Now I am doing much better and should be making all As in my future classes. I plan on retaking all seven (yes, I know, that's a lot) of the courses that I failed. I know DO schools will look at the most recent grade received in a course for GPA calculation, but the failed course will still remain on my transcripts for them to see. With good extracurriculars, MCAT score, etc do you think I can apply to DO school and have a chance of being accepted? Or would it be a wiser decision to apply for a SMP?

I will apply for a SMP if needed, but if there is a decent chance of me being accepted into DO school, then I think I would rather take that route. If I can save myself money and time, that'd be great!

Come back in two years and then ask your question.

Wow..if you are a sophomore in college, well, you have A TON of time to prove yourself. All A's from this point on would liken you to apply to an MD school of you so desire. However, Goro is definitely right about coming back in two years. Make it count.

Thanks, that truly does make me feel much better.

But seven classes is a lot... I am retaking all of them, but don't you think that failing that many will look badly? DO schools do grade replacement but won't they see my failed courses and be skeptical of me?

Schools will see you failed courses but if you take the time to retake and ace them all, you'll be fine. Just start getting straight-As and you'll be ok.

Smps are a waste of money and it makes very little sense to do one when there is grade replacement available for DO schools. (MD schools don't do grade replacement)

If his/her GPA is good enough then no retakes should be necessary. A strong upward trend is what matters from here on out.

Agreed with the above poster. If you have a good upward trend, as it sounds like you plan to, your F s won't hurt you.
