At what vertebrae level does the spinal cord end?
a) T1–T2
b) Sacrum
c) L1–L2
d) T12–L1
e) Coccyx
Correct Answer: C (L1–L2)
In adults, the spinal cord ends in the lumbar region at the level of the first and second lumbar vertebrae (L1–L2). This cone-shaped ending is called the conus medullaris.
Below this point, the spinal cord no longer continues as a solid structure. Instead, the nerve roots descend as the cauda equina, which is why lumbar punctures are safely performed below this level.
