AZCOM Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I sort of find the idea of small-town and out-of-state rotations attractive. From everything I've heard, if there's one complaint about AZCOM, it's the preceptorships, but it seems like a great way of getting practical experience that couldn't be had in a normal rotation.

The best advice for clinical training I've gotten yet was at my Kirksville interview from a pediatrician who was excited by my mention that I wanted a broad scope of family practice in my training. He talked for ten minutes about how "REAL" FP docs did C-sections and basic surgeries in addition to the normal stuff, and that the key to getting that sort of training was to do an unopposed residency. His speech convinced me to choose AZCOM before I was out the KCOM door.

If those going into primary care are best served by an unopposed residency, what could be better than unopposed clinical years? I suppose for many students the preceptorships do represent a compromise, but they're the reason I chose AZCOM without hesitation.

Between the preceptorship system and the incredible electives AZCOM offers, it at least on paper seems to me about as good a school for primary care as one could hope. I'm sure in practice it's not quite as smooth, but I'd be interested in seeing a survey that broke down satisfaction by desired specialty.

Has anyone heard from campus housing yet?

i thought i'd throw this out for everyone-- fyi.....on the finaid application, the first step is an institutional application. On line it has the option for an electronic submission.....well, the finaid office requires a HARD COPY to be submitted so the electronic, although offered, is pointless. Don't get caught up thinking your application is complete as i did.

one other thing....some of you have said you got your school email....can you access it yet or is that something that will come with time?? thanks everyone!

jhug,

I have been accessing my school e-mail for a while now. If you go to http://azwebmail.midwestern.edu you can log in with the name and password they gave you (or different password if you changed it). If you are unable to log in, I would call and get that straightened out too.

Irish-- thank you!! i got mine up and running-- i actually had a few from someone selling a mattress???🙂

I need to correct what i said about the institutional application. They DO PREFER that we send it electronically. They do suggest, and i would agree, that we check in a day or two after to make sure they got the application. Although it says a hard copy is needed, submitting electronically is doable and even the preferred method. Sorry for the bad info😉

Yea, I did the electronic one a while back and I remember it saying something to the fact that I could print out the same app. that I sent elec. and send or fax it to MWU. So I faxed it to Financial services, to Tammy Schmidt, and verified it with her that she got my fax.
I got my master promissory note from T.H.E. (actually a while ago) and it said that basically all I needed to do was have AZCOM send them my eligibility status stuff and everything should be in order. Anyone else get this kinda news???it just seems too simple. I called AZCOM and they said that they were not going to send eligibility info until ?later? this year?whatever/whenever that means.

Just wondering if any of you guys/gals were golfers???

congradulations to all of you. you seem like a great group of people, and you'll be a wonderful asset to our school.

how come we didn't have a forum like this when i was applying in '99? 😉

lucky9999
Great! Definitely! Did you see the plaque on the wall in the room we all waited in for the interviews?there is a MWU golf tourney! I think that fairly regular outings would be great! For me, nothing would help deal with the stress of a hard school schedule like a Sat/Sun morning on the links!!

i really enjoy golfing....i'm not very good--let's just say that if i hit a bad shot (often) i like to hit another ball, and if my ball is a foot into the rough i have no problem scooting it over🙂 I would love to go as much as possible. Maybe we could plan a little outing before school starts-- a good get-to-know-you kind of thing.

Charles, i too am suprised at the ease of the finaid process. I guess a lot of people are anxious to loan so much money to future docs😉 Crazy!!!

My wife got me a set of clubs for my birthday, and I might wear them out before my next b-day comes along. I'm definately up for some golf.

I'll take you up on the tennis, einey! Though I'm not much more of a challenge than a backstop would be, my taunts-while-bitterly-losing are much better developed.

Tennis is great too! Althought I am much more fluent at golf.

my taunts-while-bitterly-losing are much better developed.

Right on! I have developed some "Highly Technical" tennis and golf terminology over the years!

Also good... Bowling, pool, softball (lots-o-people needed), racquet ball

Hey Einey and others,

I love to play tennis! I also love playing soccer. I can't say my golf game is any good, but I do have clubs.

Out,
B

Hey, did anyone see Popoy's message on the azcom survey thread? Apparently the AZCOM administration asked that the link to the survey be removed, and then the survey was taken offline altogether.

This seems sort of disturbing. If the survey were somehow illegitimate it would be understandable, but from what I've heard it was a legitimate (if somewhat antagonistic) survey. I'm a little uncomfortable with the idea that the school is censoring SDN. Not volunteering information is one thing, but actively removing it when it's available....leaves a bad taste.

Please RESPOND to poor student relations with teaching staff and continued problems with 3 and 4th year clinical rotations

F/A-- i pulled this from the other post you put up. They (azcom) probably don't see the same problems you do (or think you've seen from what others have told you). From literally every student i've talked with there is no real problem with 3rd and 4th years at azcom. Sure, everywhere can improve. I believe azcom is wonderful at taking what one class sees as a weakness and improving it. It makes sense to me that if the admin never intended for this "survey" to be published/go public they would pull it. Why participate in something that you don't put together? I imagine that if the admin does want/intend the survey to be published they will put it together and publish it. I wouldn't see this as a big censoring conspiracy. A small (and probably not very good) example might be one at my local level. The Smart family (elizabeth smart--i'm sure everyone has heard about that) refused to make a book about what happened to their daughter. Well, people started talking about doing the book/movie/afterschool show anyway-- with no intention/endorsement of the family to go public. Now the family is putting together the facts and making a book about this terrible experience on their own. Are they censoring? No, just making sure it is accurate and a true reflection of what happened. Now that the fam intends to go public/release the info, they will.

i hope even just a little bit of this makes sense😀
In the end, i love what azcom is going to provide us and with hard work, involvement, and dedication all "problems" will be minimal.

What are ?YOU? gonna do in your final months as a normal citizen??

For me:
Read as many books as I can Star Wars and hopefully some classics.

Play a sick amount of golf

Play a lot of video games

Spend some real quality time with my fianc?

Do some stargazing (crystal clear sky of the sierras makes for some unbelievable shots)

Oh yea?maybe get those immunization record and stuff too😀

I just have to let this go!!

Brief background: I am a Histology Technician and one of my duties is to release the deceased form the hospital morgue to the funeral home(s).

So, I am releasing this person who had passed away about four hours prior. Everything was as usual; we lift the body onto the gurney, ID the body, check with nursing, etc. I was filling out some of the release paperwork, and the mortuary representative who was there was ?marking? the body (writing ID info on the leg) when suddenly we hear ?Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

The body moaned at us!!😱 I have heard about this happening plenty of times. I assumed it would be a just a muffled, short, expiration of air. Nope! This was a long, loud, extremely voice-like, rather high-pitched, moan. I just froze in place, and the mortuary guy promptly removed his pen from the body?s leg. And what made the situation really freaky was that I got that Stupid feeling like you know someone is standing behind you! Man what an uncomfortable day. We eventually zipped up the bag and sent her off?I feel for the mortuary guy?he had to ride to the mortuary with the body.

Well, that?s my little horror story! I think I am ready for anything now!

Hey guys,

jhug knows who I am 😉 I used to post a ton last year when I was applying. Anyway, I'm an MS1 at AZCOM with an afternoon to kill. A rare event for me, I assure you 🙂 This quarter is a lot better than last quarter though. I'm also our class secretary and will be the class VP next year, so I am busier than most. Especially with all of the other clubs I try and participate in. OK. Enough about me.

Do you guys have any questions specific to what goes on 1st year or about apartments or houses or cost of living? Or anything? If so, just e-mail me at [email protected] Yes, it's just about the world's longest e-mail. But the server hasn't gone down yet this year, which is always nice. I don't get to check SDN often, but I check my e-mail every day. And no, I did not read through this entire thread. SDN is a lot slower now than it was last year. Even with cable.

So..... Let me know if you want to know anything!

-Andrea

PS... Glad to hear the triplets were doing well as of january, jhug! Yes, that was the last time I checked on here........ :blushes:

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well. I haven't posted in a while, but I just wanted to let everyone know that I just got back from AZCOM yesterday and wanted to share what I found out. It's mainly about the on-campus housing. I met with Jose and had him show me all of the apartments because I really couldn't remember what I saw way back in October. I had already sent in my housing app and had chosen a studio as my first choice. After seeing the apartments again I quickly changed that. They just seemed really small to me. For those of you who were wondering, the studios have more square footage than the standard one bedrooms because that includes the balcony and storage space for the studios. The one and two bedrooms don't have either, just more living space. Jose said that costs will change pretty soon (within the next couple of weeks), which is why if you sent in your app, you haven't heard from him yet. He told me the luxury one and two bedrooms will likely go up $20-60 per month, the standard two bedroom will probably stay the same, the standard one bedroom will probably go down a little and I can't remember what he said about the studios. Also, the reason the third floor apartments cost a little more is because they all have vaulted ceilings. So after seeing everything, I decided to get a standard two bedroom by myself for $620 a month. Jose said this is perfectly acceptable and you don't have to have a roommate. He said the luxury apartments go the fastest just because there are so few of them. So if you chose one of them, I'd say as soon as you get the updated application, send it back with your deposit right away. If you chose one of the other types of apartments, he said students usually get what they want. The deposit is $100 by the way. He didn't have anyone send it with the original app, again because the prices were going to change. Apartments are first-come first-served so get in your app as fast as you can. I was the first to give him a deposit, so he put mine on top of the pile. But I have to say, I'm really anxious to move in. Everything is so amazing around there.

I had my parents and sister with me and they all loved the school. They told me that I definitely made the right decision. The weather was perfect when I was there. It was 70-80 the whole time and just one night it was a little chilly and I needed a sweater, but still had shorts on. By the way, has anyone seen the homes just north of the 101? I think the complex was called Arrowhead Lakes???. Anyway, just about every home backs up to one of a series of man-made lakes and they all have docks in their backyards. My family and I looked around in their and saw quite a few huge soft-shelled turtles lying on the rocks around the lake. Beautiful.

For all you fellow AF HPSP students, I just got my COT packet yesterday and unfortunately they put me in the July class. I was really hoping for June because I know a few of you are planning to go then and it would be cool to get to know you before school even starts. Plus I'd like to get it out of the way so I can have the whole summer to get ready to move. Oh well.

While I was at AZCOM I paid my final matriculation deposit...woo-hoo!!! Bea in the Admissions Office told me that day, Monday the 14th, was their last day of interviews. So our class will be completely full pretty soon. I also went to the student store and stocked up on Midwestern/AZCOM garb. I got a couple of t-shirts, a pair of shorts, and a window sticker for my car. Everyone is so nice at the school. The lady in the student store was talking to us for about a half an hour about neat things to see in Glendale/Phoenix. I was most happy with the fact that my favorite eatery, Subway (Eat Fresh) 🙂 , could be found on just about every other corner. I'm so excited about starting school and moving to Arizona. I'm sorry this was so much rambling. I hope some of it was helpful. If anyone has any questions for me about housing or anything else, feel free to ask here or PM me. See you all real soon!

Oh, yeah...besides golf and tennis, anyone interested in making use of those basketball courts on campus?

-Matt

Matt,

Did Jose say when he would be mailing that info? I am leaving for New Zealand for three weeks (May 2-23) and won't be here to get any mail. I want to make sure I secure my place and send in my deposit money. Let me know if he told you when or anything of the sort. Otherwise, I guess I could call him

Thanks for all the great updates!

Hey Irish79,

I don't know if you have ever been to New Zealand. If you have not, you are in for such a great time. I backpacked and traveled thru New Zealand for two weeks years back and it was the best trip of my life. You'll enjoy it tremendously. I highly recommend spending time on the South Island. It is great!!

Hey irish-

It sounded like he would be sending apps within the next couple weeks. He's waiting for whoever sets the prices to give him the new rates, so it's sort of beyond his control. He said it will probably happen within the next couple of weeks and he'll send new info as soon as he has it. If I were you, I'd call him and let him know you'll be away. I'm sure he'll take your deposit and that should put you ahead of most if you know what apartment you want. Have fun in New Zealand!

Hi biofreak!

I too wanted to attend the June COT session, but alas, in the AF nothing seems to go as originally planned. Due to a glitch in the military personnel computer system, I will have to forego COT until next summer. I am still here in San Antonio very diligently working on being discharged from active duty to attend school.

I hope to be in Phoenix in June. I look forward to meeting you all. If you have any AF related questions, please feel free to ask. I'll answer what I can. After to speaking to a new nurse on my unit who just went through COT, make sure you prepare your uniforms with name tapes and AF tapes prior to arrival. I also have OI's (operational instructions) used in the AF which you will be tested on if you would like to begin studying early.

Memorize the following statements:
"Sir, Lt biofreak reports to ask a question."
"Sir, Lt biofreak reports as ordered."
"Sir, Lt biofreak requests permission to enter."
"Sir, Lt biofreak requests permission to ask a question."

You will definitely enjoy the AF. I only hope to enjoy AZCOM as much. Phoenix is a great city. I am shopping for a home in the area just north of the school as well.

Cyndi🙂

Matt,
I would love to play some basketball. Maybe play some after classes or early in the morning to avoid the heat. But, yeah I'm game.

Burly B,

This is my first time to New Zealand. I will be flying into Auckland and then down to Christchurch. My roommate and I are going to backpack from Christchurch on the south island up to Auckland on the North and then I will fly home from Auckland. Are there any activities you would recommend doing? We have been trying to decide things to do: deep sea diving, glacier climbing or skiing...do you have any suggestions?

biofreak,

Thank you so much for the info. I will call Jose and see if I can send my money in.

In reviewing how to take histories/diff diagnosis i came across an interesting thought. It says "The large university teaching hospital, the setting in which most health professionals are educated, is in some ways a disadvantageous setting to begin your experience with patient care. You must not allow the profusion of technical competence and the variety of skills to obscure the essential interactions that must take place between you and the patient." (mosby's guide to physical examination, second edition, pg10)

it's nice to know that we are going to attend a school that is aware of this and accomodates accordingly. I am really starting to get excited about all this!!!

Hey Irish,

I'll PM you with some New Zealand travel info/suggestions.

I feel a little behind the ball on this thread, but I finally made the decision to attend AZCOM. Now that it is done I, like all of you, can not wait to get to Glendale and set up shop. I actually interviewed on April 14th the last day, and found out that Friday.

I am still unsure about housing. I need a roommate or two. The campus housing thing may be a safety net for me, but it seemed that off campus housing was better. Does anyone have thoughts on this? How about contacts? I was going to fly down and check out housing in June/July, but without a roommate it seems pointless.

Does anyone play volleyball? The sand court looked ready for a pro-beach tourney. I'll even supply the ball.

Hey TMarkus,

Congrats on making the final decision and welcome to the class of 2007. Tell us a little about you. Where are you from? Married? Children? Desired specialty? Etc.

Cheers,
Matt

Welcome to the group TMarkus:clap:

Man, I would be all about getting a roomie, but I really only need one until December for when I'll be alone. And it sucks to have someone bail mid year and stick others with the bill... I know from experience.

i am going down June 3-4 to check out some of the cheap places (Eagle Crest and the like).

How's everyone doing??? Getting that immunization checklist ready to knock down?

T-- congrats on the acceptance/decision! I was super impressed with the on-campus appts and the sierra canyon appts (17500 N 67TH AVE) The management was really nice/attentive there and the appts seemed worth the money. Good luck on the 3-4th bla!

I had my titers done a few months ago at Kaiser Permanente. It only cost me five dollars for a lab visit and it took care of everything. My regular physician ordered the tests and he printed out the results for me. So if anyone else has Kaiser it's a very cheap way to go. Hope everyone's doing well.

-Matt

T Marcus,

I am glad to see that a fellow Washingtonian is going to attend AZCOM. I know that we all made the right decision to attend this school. I am so excited to finally get started on the rest of our lives.
Did you grow up in the Bellingham area? I grew up in Federal Way. I still live in Washington but on the East side of the state where there is not so much rain. My parents still live in the rain of the Northwest. They are already planning on coming to visit often. Congats on your acceptance and decision.

Kevin

i sent in a record of my immunizations showing i got all the needed shots. That seemed to be enough for the school.

For the record:
I grew up in Maple Valley, WA. I moved to Bellingham in 1993 to do degree work at Western Washington University (BS Biology/Sedondary Ed). I live my girlfriend of almost three years. Unfortunately she is staying here because, I am told, there is very little snow in Phoenix during the winter.

Activities include: DH mountain biking, skiing (which I will have to give up for some time), and a bunch of other things that I will be leaving behind (SCUBA, Kayaking, etc.). And, after seeing the volleyball court, I hope to work on my V-ball skills in between studying and studying.

Hey, what are people doing for housing? I would like to live a short bike ride from campus, but I am thinking it might be better to live on campus for the first year.

Oh, and just for the record, getting into medical school makes me feel like a kid at christmas.

I was fortunate in that i had to have just about all of the required shots for my job in the hospital. I just have to remember to go to employee health and get the paperwork copied.

Hey as I was saying,

Do any of you ride offroad motorcycles?

If I had one, I'd be riding my dirtbike everywhere...hell, I'd take it to class. I had one great summer of riding. A buddy of mine tried my old 1969 Yamaha (AT1?) on for size and bought a 1984 enduro with a monoshock a week later. We'd tear up my back yard hopping tires and stuff, but my bike was such a piece that we usually spent as much time in the garage bending old steel back into place as we did riding. With as much fun as I had on that dual shock p.o.s., I can imagine how cool it would be to ride around AZ on a newer enduro. You got a loaner Kothkg? 😉

Here in MN I could only ride about 4 months out of the year. Maybe I can justify a motorcylce purchase with 300 days of sunshine. I have been wanting to get a street cycle lately. Every year at about this time, the motorcycles start to come out of hibernation and they look like so much more fun to drive than my saturn!

TMarkus, you don't have to give up skiing. I spent the majority of my interview talking with the people about skiing. They suggested all kinds of places to go. And, Colorado isn't THAT far away. Of course, you aren't as close to Whistler and Big Sky any more--but you can find something. I come from the Midwest, so I figure skiing in Arizona can't be any worse than skiing the HILLS of Wisconsin.

burs0028, you should get a motorcycle and head down here to Milwaukee for Harley Fest (100th Anniversary of Harley Davidson--August 27th). OR, they might have some good deals. Just a suggestion since you are so close. Where in MN are you?

Hey, does anyone do any Downhill Mountain biking? There has got to be some close to campus.

Hi.

I was wondering if any of you guys were shown a list of the residencies of most recent grads of AZCOM? Do you know how I can see this list?
(TCOM has theirs online)
Thanx.

Burs,

I have a YZ426F and an old Honda Nighthawk 750 steet bike. I would love to have someone to ride either with. I have heard that the dirt riding in AZ is awsome. The biggest bike shop in Arizona is in Glendale and it is off of Bell Rd. We'll have to talk more about it when we get there.

Aallaei,

The info your looking for can be found at www.azcomstudents.org

Kevin

Hehe.... There's nothing wrong with skiing the hills of Wisconsin 😉 I learned to ski in Alpine Valley, as a matter of fact (I grew up in the NW Chicago burbs). It's a nice place to learn, since the hill isn't too bad. There's skiing in AZ, too. We got a lot of snow this year. Woohoo for El Nino.

There is a big group of students who go mountain biking. There are lots of places around here to go. One of my roommates goes almost every day. This quarter anyway. One of the phys profs is pretty into it too.

As for this year's match list, it's pretty impressive.

Wow--that residency match list is quite impressive (Kadyra--I hope you copied and pasted it and didn't type it all in on your own).

Well, I thought I'd join this thread being that I'll be attending AZCOM this fall. I'm very excited about living in the Phoenix area and attending AZCOM. It was my first choice school, but I didn't interview there until the last week of interviews (my file was complete in between the two interview blocks, so I had to keep hounding the admissions office to get an interview--I finally got one the 2nd to last day of interviews and was accepted the week after).

I'm from Idaho and am a married with a one-year old daughter. I graduated in International Studies at Idaho State University; I heard of AZCOM through a number of ISU alums who attend there. Once I interviewed there, I really understood why they spoke so highly of it.

Look forward to meeting you all this fall.

TMarkus- Yea I noticed the hills in the horizon when I went to interview and coudn't wait to ride them. I'm more of a XC, singletrack rider (just built a bike for XC), but it's a softtail so I am sure it will do just fine on some downhill. I am planning on moving out there in late July so if you're around we'll have to hit the trails.

When is everyone else planning on moving?

I thought I'd chime in to this thread, as I was also recently accepted to AZCOM. Fortunately for me I live right down the street, although the wife and I are house searching right now. I mention this in case any of you have any questions about the area.

I've lived here in Phoenix for the last 4 years after a six year stint in the Navy (stationed in Washington).

I seen a couple of ya talking about mountain biking, and wanted to say that AZ has some of the best mountain biking in the country (although I miss the wet, muddy, technical rides in Washington). As far as good local downhill rides, you will love South Mountain. You have to earn your downhill with the ride up, but it gets as intense as it comes (excluding Vancover, B.C.). If you own one of those 30 lb + bikes, then earning your downhill may not be an option. In that case head up to Flagstaff and ride Sunset trail. If you bring two vehicles, ride one to the top, and have someone take the truck back down to the bottom. Personally, the ride up is the only way to go (great workout at altitude). Prescott is another favorite, but since this isn't a mountiain biking forum, I'll end it at that but feel free to PM me about trails, ect.

I also noticed a bunch of athletes on the page. I'm currently in two flag football leagues (too old and brittle for tackle anymore, except for those occasional weekend games). I was also involved in a softball league, and think it would be a great way to blow off some steam in a Friday night/Saturday league if we could somehow get enough of us involved.

I hate to take up all this space on my first reply to this thread, but I look forward to seeing you all this fall, and will certainly try to keep up with this thread.

Peace

Hi everyone!
I thought I'd introduce myself as well. My name is James and I will be joining ya'll this year too. I'm currently residing in San Diego, but I just moved out here from New Orleans where I did my undergrad and graduate studies. Anyway, I was set on going to Nova until I interviewed at AZCOM in early april. From the posts, it looks like we got a good bunch. Look foward to meeting all of you.
James

I'm definitely in for flag football, mountain biking, golfing, or whatever else to blow off some steam.
