AZCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
sweet, just got an azcom interview, two day turn around from receipt of my secondary. Bad news is, its not till mid Feb, do you guys think people who receive other acceptances will be dropping their interview spots, allowing me to pick up an earlier spot?

I heard this happening a lot last year (from reading the 2008-2009 discussion thread). I would keep checking the website to see if anything frees up. And check this thread regularly as well, since some people post when they drop their interviews to allow a fellow sdn member to grab it. Good luck!

Yes, it's possible. I checked the portal on 10/19 (without even getting an email invite yet) and got my interview for Nov. 6th. The other options were January 28 and dates in February. Afterward, I went on SDN and saw that someone had dropped their interivew for that date. I'm so glad I got it! Just keep checking the portal to see if you can move it up.

So I know this has probably been covered in the what to wear thread, but I just want to get some input from women who have interviewed at AZCOM. Do I seriously have to wear nylons in the 85 degree weather? What did any other skirt wearing ladies do while interviewing at AZCOM?

What quick turnaround. I interviewed on Monday 10/26 and this morning have an acceptance!

In the 3 interviews I've been to (AZCOM included), I've only seen 2 women wear skirts (1 from AZCOM). Both wore nylons. I would stick to the conservative side and wear the nylons. The interview portion is in the morning so you can take them off in the bathroom when you're finished. You aren't outside for the tour for too long either; the indoor is A/C. Good luck!

I'M SOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY I'M IN. IT'S A MIRACLE.

I thought I was doooomed for the caribbeans.

Yes, you should wear nylons. I don't think it would be professional of you not to. When I went, it was over 100 degrees, and the last thing I was worried about was my nylons lol. And I'm from Minnesota, so trust me I'm not used to that crazy heat. Except it was very dry, no humidity, so it really didn't feel as hot as I was expecting. The part that got really hot is the jacket, I didn't even notice the nylons. I had a light colored suit on, which helped. Everyone was a little jealous because they were all in black. 🙂

To all those who interviewed on 10/23 it looks like they've made their decisions. I now have an accepted student checklist! Best of luck to everyone.

I got a voicemail today saying I am accepted. I am so suprised-I thought my interview went terribly (I was so nervous, that I felt like I was acting really weird). Anyways I have been accepted to KCOM as well, which I got a good feeling from, so I'll decline this as soon as I get those papers to free up a seat... Congrats to those accepted, and good luck to those interviewing!

I got in today by voicemail too and I thought for sure I was going to get rejected. Now I gotta decide between here, KC and Lake erie PA.... Tough decision any suggestions?

So this is how it feels to be acccepted.... now... what to do to make the next 8 months fly by

Yes, definitely wear nylons. I wore a skirt to my AZCOM interview and wore nylons. It was about 106 degrees that day, but I didn't think twice about them. I still think I was cooler than the women in pants. It's much better to be on the conservative side, because you never know who will be interviewing you. Good luck!

Congrats, I just received my acceptance too (interviewed 10/20).

I am totally in the same boat, I need something to keep me busy, like a job, until school starts...

I am not female, but I will say that the weather is getting very nice around now, so you don't have to worry about burning hot tours that might've happened in the last month. I also see that MN premed chimed in, so you should be fine.

I was a skirt wearing lady and wore nylons. It just looks so much nicer imo. Plus it's so cold in any of the buildings that you'll be glad for them.

Congrats to everyone who got their acceptances this week! Nov. 11th can't get here fast enough for my interview. I hope to be joining all of you!

I know how you feel! My interivew (first one) is on Friday this week, and I've hardly been able to work this week. I'm really looking forward to my visit to Phoenix.

Oh, that feeling of insecurity...

Complete on 10/8 and haven't heard from them (or CCOM). It seems most people hear have heard back pretty quickly from this school. Am I getting ahead of myself by worrying? Brutal truth is appreciated.

[my stats incase anyone cares: 32Q, cGPA 3.82, sGPA 3.77, OOS, age 27]

I wouldn't worry too much, I was complete 10/2 and didn't hear about AZCOM until last Thursday night (10/29). I still haven't heard from CCOM tho. We have similar stats.

Have you checked under "interview scheduling" on the MWU portal? I never received a complete email or an email inviting me for my interview. I just checked under there and saw that I could schedule it. I have no idea if that was just a fluke, but it would be worth checking!

Is attendance mandatory for AZCOM? And do they record lectures?

Attendance is mandatory for Psych and for OMM Lab and Anatomy Lab. Besides that, nothing else is mandatory. However, remember that you are paying 40+ thousand a year for your education and that teachers constantly drop hints to what will be important for the exams. With that said, there are gonna be days that you are too tired to go to class/feel you need to study...but I would highly suggest going to class as often as possible. And no, they do not record lectures (but seeing as how the averages are consistently 85-88% on exams, the students seem to be doing ok without it...).

How much time do you get off from school to prepare for the boards after second yr?

Is there a board prep course offered by the school (either mandatory or optional)?

You get approximately 3 and 1/2 weeks to prepare currently. This might increase if the second years change it.

According to the intranet website, there will be a COMLEX prep elective offered in spring quarter, but I haven't heard any details about it. It seems they did in fact follow through with both this and the California rotations, which is very good to hear.

Not a fan of nylons... reminds me of the 80s women. The girl at my interview was wearing a ridiculously short dress w/o nylons. She had the legs and body to do it but it was quite distracting... haha!!!

(she got in btw)

Woke up this morning, checked the AZCOM site, looks like a plethora of interview spots opened up over night, will be interviewing within one week!

Is there a facebook group for AZCOM Class of 2014?? I looked but gave up because my computer was being stupid.

I dont believe there is a facebook group yet, atleast I haven't seen one

Someone make a facebook group for 2014, yeah?
I tried starting one but I'm not sure how you start a new group.... sorry!

I'm dying to join!

Hey guys, I became complete to AZCOM on November 6th. I have a 3.73 SCI GPA, 3.68 Overall GPA, and 25 MCAT. What are my chances/when do you think I'll get an interview offer?

SORRY, I meant to say I became complete Nov. 4th

They should get to you within 2 weeks or so if they give you an interview. I think you should have a good shot at getting one. Your gpa is about .3 higher than the school's average and your mcat is within range.

I have my interview on the 11th! Looking forward to meeting any fellow SDNers there!

Hey guys,

I completed my secondaries October 29. I was wondering how long it usually takes them to get back to you about an interview. My stat are cGPA: 3.81, sGP: 3.8 and MCAT 26. If someone could relieve me anxiety that would be awesome

It will depend on how much traffic they have going through the admissions office. I turned mine in back in September and I got an email within a week of submitting for an interview invite. It will probably take a bit longer now since they will be more busy. Your best bet is to hear from someone who recently got an invite.. find when they submitted their secondary.

You should have no trouble getting an interview provided you have clinical experience. My stats were way worse than yours and I still received one.

I have had over 3 years of clinical experiences in an emergency room. So I'm hoping that doesn't got against me because I don't have any primary care experience. How long did it take you get hear back after your secondary?

hey, tmntdonjuan what are your stats if you don't mind me asking? You said you received an interview and you had low stats...thanks!!!

I received it a few days after completing my application. I think it's because I was complete during a time that wasn't so busy.

Jnguyen, don't panic about the type of experience. I have ten years of working as an ER Tech and EMT, 1 year volunteering in the ER, 4,.5 years as a volunteer disaster responder, and almost 24 years teaching CPR/First Aid. They are looking for a well-rounded person with medical experiences that show you have thought this out. I also volunteer in other areas and church, so that helps round me out.

As for stats, I got an interview and my stats were okay. My overall GPA was 3.19 and my science GPA was 3.44. However, I also have two masters degrees (theology and ethics with an emphasis in bioethics and emergency management/hazardous materials with GPAs of 3.593 and 3.83 respectively). I got a 26R on the MCAT with only one week to prep for it (long story on that issue). Stats are not the end-all, be-all for DO schools. I know several people who had GPAs over 3.8 and MCAT scores in 30s and did not receive interviews. Med Schools today seem to be looking for that type of person that empathize with patients and provide care that is compassionate and non-judgmental. Just my $0.02 worth from what I have seen thus far.

Not necessarily low...but lower than Jnguyen's. My undergrad cum and sci AACOMAS GPA were both barely above 3.0. However I had a 3.8 grad gpa with a 30+ MCAT.

In case anyone under 25 is planning to rent a car when visiting AZCOM, use Enterprise with the rate ID from the school. It waived the under 25 fee which was a huge savings ($20/day, I think).
