AZCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to clarify, the Class of 2012 was not allowed to sell any of their blocks. The associating prices to regional trades were started as soon as we were given our regional site from the lottery and was immediately banned by the Dean. We are allowed to currently do a individual block trade (which is a complete mess) that may not be allowed next year.

Just wanted to clear up the misinformation.

Actually, I wanted to comment a little more on that. It seemed like Dr. Kemper allowed 2012 to trade locations, but I guess that is no longer possible, so they allowed individual block trades? As you say, that seems very complicated and I understand why it will not continue.

MN Premed, I do not have specifics, but the majority (75%+) got their first choice and even more (85%+) got at least their first 3. Only a handful had to settle for 4th place.

I received a letter today saying I was "on hold" and will continue to be re-reviewed... I was pretty happy to see this, as I figured it was a rejection due to my low stats... anyways... does anyone have any experience with this situation??? Do I have a realistic shot at getting an interview later...or is this just putting off the inevitable rejection? Also, would a letter of interest be appropriate here? I also have two additional LORs I can send. Would any of this be helpful??AZCOM is definitely in my top couple of schools.

Yeah I got the same letter and was wondering the same thing...my stats arn't very high either so I was glad it was a hold rather then a straight up rejection. Good Luck to you and hope you get an interview and hang in there...cos for me the worst thing is being in limbo...hoping and waiting everyday....
Just wondering if there was something that could be done to enhance an application after the secondary has been sent. Anybody know? Or anybody have any experience of being placed on pre-interview hold and about how long before they were contacted? Good or Bad? Thanks .

About the pre-interview hold people:

My personal experience with this was with my fellow SMP classmates near the end of winter quarter. By then, many of us had already interviewed and a few were held, even though they were in this program. What turned things around for them was visiting the admissions offices in person and letting them know they were in the SMP.

Since those who asked probably aren't in this situation, the best thing you can do is contact BOTH admission offices once a week and ask for updates and what you personally can do to move your application along.

Sending materials can't hurt, depending on what you send. Transcripts are a good example, but I don't see how LoRs can help after this stage. If you have something excellent to send, such as new work or volunteer experiences, go for it, but remember, don't send it just for the sake of sending something. Make everything you send count.

LoIs probably won't help too much either, because they're even more variable than LoRs. Stick to buffing that application and keeping them updated.

My SMP classmates eventually got an interview but they weren't noticed often into Feb and March. If you hang on and keep talking to them, you'll hear something eventually, good or bad. But again, the key thing here is calling them once a week or every other week. I can't stress this enough because since you all don't have the luxury of being right here on campus while already applying, you have to make yourself known somehow.

If anyone is looking for a closer interview date, I just cancelled for February 25. Best of luck to everyone!

What does SMP stand for? Sorry if this was already covered. And, I submitted my secondary at the beginning of January. Does AZCOM send a complete email? How long does this take? Is it too soon to call and ask my status?

I was debating about sending my Master's grades... I am in a different type of Masters program... I wouldn't clarify it as SMP in the sense that most Med School hopefuls do... it's official classification is a Pre-Professional Non-Thesis Master's program in Biology... I have 5 500/600 level classes a semester (last Fall and now)... clearly its a rigorous schedule... my GPA was okay...3.5...I definitely wasn't happy... Would this be a positive to my application or not?

hey everyone, decided to change my interview date from today to april 9th. Tickets were so expensive, do you think this will negative on my part or lessen my chances of being accepted?

You should be able to check whether your file is complete through the same login where you applied . After logging in go to application checklist and it should give you the dates as to when everything was received.

I was complete 12/22 and just got a pre-interview hold letter in the mail last Mon 01/18. Hope this helps. Good Luck!🙂

For current students...

Is tuition due all at once, monthly, quarterly?

Please let me know! Thanks~

Tuition is due the first Friday of every quarter. If you live on campus, a quarter's worth of rent is due that day too (included with your tuition).

Pretty sure it is quarterly. Everyone I know pays for school through loans and since the loan pays tuition directly to the school we don't really worry about due dates. It all kind of happens on it's own once the loan goes through.

Interviewed this past Monday (1/25), accepted today. 😀

How did you determine that you had been accepted so soon? On the MWUnet page does it show the accepted student checklist on the right? Thanks!

Yeah, I checked around 2:00 or 3:00 Arizona time and the checklist had appeared.

I thought the committee wasn't meeting until late next week? Or at least that's what they told us (I interviewed there on 1/22)

That's what they'd told my interview group also, but, if you traipse through this thread, there have been a case or two where people found out before they were told the committee was supposed to meet. I don't really know what is up with that though.

Nice, congrats on the acceptance. Hopefully I will be finding out good news next week and joining you at AZCOM this coming fall.

Didn't know that housing fees were due every quarter. Thanks for that info!

Also, if I get assigned campus housing, how early can I move in? Is the school gym a far walk from the campus apartments? Actually, do students even have time for the gym?

You'd have to call or e-mail Jose about early move-in. I know that's it's a per diem type fee if you do decide to come early. Also, you may not be able to depending on the previous tenant's move-out.

There is a (small) workout room in the clubhouse, but I use it a lot because all I really do is run on a treadmill and do some lifting. You can get to the school's gym (and anywhere else on campus) within 10 minutes of leaving your apartment. You have time for the gym if you make time for the gym.

hi everyone...so I called on Wednesday to check whether I was complete. This is what I was told:
Your file has been reviewed and you should receive the decision by e-mail sometime this week.
My response: Alright...is there any way that you can tell me what the decision is?
Their response: Sorry, you will receive an e-mail soon.
Should I be worried? If they wanted to interview me, wouldn't they just answer as soon as possible?
Thank you!

SMP = special masters program. It's a 1 year program that basically exists to help you into a professional program. AZCOM has one and they are currently taking applications.

I did it here at AZCOM so if you have more questions, PM me.

The apartments are close to the gym and most of campus. Also, yes, you do have time for fun stuff and the gym. I'd think you have to, because you will plateau in studying effectiveness. Give some time to yourself and it will work out.

To be honest, when I called them before the committee was supposed to meet and they had a decision, they told me straight up. I also got the email confirming it, but I did not receive anything else up until a month before moving to AZ.

If you must know, see if your online.midwestern.edu has the accepted student checklist yet. If it doesn't, just wait for the email.

Hey everyone, I'm currently planning for my interview invite in February...I was wondering how late the interview process usually runs b/c I'm trying to book a flight back to the east coast on the same day. Thanks for any advice!

The school quotes the day ends around 2:30, but I just interviewed last week and the day was over by 1:30. I've heard they're pretty flexible and understanding when it comes to people needing to make their flights though.

Hey guys,

I'm going to be interviewing at AZCOM on monday and I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide some feedback/insight/tips regarding the interview process. Ive read through the forum and interview feedback already. It seems to be a pretty laid back panel interview but i'm nervous as to what to expect (although student feedback seemed to be split on whether it was one on one or group...), but any input would be appreciated.

-it seems that people are divided between it being closed file and open file? any verdict?

-do interviewers mostly seem to focus on the cv/resume provided, the essay or something else??

-how much do they question you regarding why you want to attend arizona specifically?

-do they lean towards asking ethics heavy questions?

-how much of the interview is led by the interviewers vs. you? as in can I lead the interview towards the experiences I would like to emphasize or is it a tossup depending on what I am asked.

any input would be appreciated!! thanks

-it is a group interview- you and typically three interviewers

-they refer to it as "semi-open" so they don't have your numbers (unless say, you include them on your resume) but they have access to non-numbers stuff

-my interviewers mostly asked ethical questions with actually very little pertaining to anything in my application (just that I was a history major and how I thought it would benefit my patients) but, other people had more questions related to their resumes and stuff, it really just depends on what interview panel you get and who is on that panel

-you are guaranteed to be asked "why medicine? why DO? and why Midwestern?"

-in my case, nearly everything I was asked was an ethics question (best suggestion-if you have an opinion on the question and you have an answer that seems logical, give your opinion and stick with it-they don't care about a "right" answer so much as a logical answer that you stick with); again, mostly depends on the interviewers you have though. On my interview day, there were even a couple of people that got the "what three people would you invite to dinner and why?" that is listed in the feedback.

-Again, depends on the people interviewing you. They do try to cut their part short long enough to ask them some questions, but, if you find an opportunity to interject something you feel is important, the interview should be conversational enough that you can mention pertinent tidbits.

I wish I could offer definite answers to your questions, but as I've said, it really all depends on the interviewers and what they want to ask and can ask in relation to your application. You can also try to find out who else is interviewing with your panel (assuming you're not the first person that panel is interviewing-admissions will give you a schedule of interviewees and interview panels on interview day) and see how their questioning went as it will be a slight indication of how it will probably go for you to an extent. Hope this helps some.

thanks for the info randomusername, i really appreciate it!

Does anyone know if the health insurance offered by the school is any good? I am totally new to health insurance....

Hi all! AZCOM seems like a realli great school. Has anyone been placed on hold pending further review? I received a letter a week ago saying that it is to be viewed in "positive light".. How many people actually get an interview from this pile? What's your experience? Thanks

Yeah, I checked around 2:00 or 3:00 Arizona time and the checklist had appeared.

I have the checklist heading present, but there aren't any options located beneath it. What does that mean? I interviewed last Friday (01/29).

If you've been accepted and the portal's updated (sometimes there's system-lag), you should have a checklist similar in design to the checklist that was present for your application materials checklist.

I was scheduled for an interview all the way in April. I wonder how many spot will be left? It seems soo late in the game already =(

When I interviewed on 1/25, one of the admissions reps had told us that the class had between 140-160 people in it already, so, there are still a good number of spots available. Though, if you can travel potentially at the last "minute," if you monitor the interview scheduling portal religiously, earlier spots should open up as others get accepted elsewhere and withdraw their applications.

Hey randomusername,

I have the checklist heading, but I do not have any options underneath it. When I click on the applicant checklist, it brings up my LOR's, etc. When I click on the accepted checklist heading, nothing comes up. Do you know what the means? Is the accepted checklist heading there for everyone?

Would you be able to post a screenshot to show me what it would look like?

Yeah, everybody should automatically have the heading, it's once options show up underneath it that you know for sure you've been accepted (barring finding out some other way). I can look into getting a screen shot, no promises though.

There have been a lot of questions about this in this and the previous pages. I suggest you do some back logging and you'll find many people in your situation.

In short, yes, you can get an interview from this pile. What can you do? Contact them often (i.e., once a week) and update them as often as you can with official materials. That's about all you can do, and you should do the former. I can't overstate this enough: call them frequently.

this might be a lame question for current students...BUT, do most students find themselves incessantly using a computer in lectures and for studying purposes, or do some mainly stick to textbooks and hand written notes. I'm debating whether to get a new computer that could better keep up with the foreseeable demands of studying.

Also, do students use iTouches, droids, etc. for accessing textbook info?

People have been referring to "SMP" What does this stand for? Also, I was waitlisted pre-interview and I sent a letter of interest. Anyone have any luck with doing this? I'm from AZ and I REALLY want to go here.

Can anyone give me advice on how detailed my "file update" should be in an email to admissions? I interviewed at AZCOM last week and since, i have found a DO to shadow and got a publication accepted.. Do i have to provide the DO name and the title, ect of the journal and paper??

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know when the committee at AZCOM meets? Is it during the week or the weekend? I interviewed last Friday (1/27) and I am wondering when I can get some information on my status.

Also, has anyone from 1/27 been accepted yet? Does anyone know how full the class is at this point in time?

Thanks

The committee is supposedly meeting tomorrow so you should know tomorrow evening or Friday if you are accepted. If you scroll up a little bit people that interviewed on 1/25 were told the class had 140-160 seats filled out of 250.

I use a combination of both. Slides will probably be available for download for 2014 so having a computer with pdf editing abilities is good. Many people just print slides or use the outlines given.

Considering I am a bit of a techie, I can't live without a moderately fast computer, so you might be asking the wrong person 😉

SMP = special masters program. I detailed AZCOM's SMP several times in this thread, but it's basically a 1 year masters to buff your application.

Also, the waitlist pre-interview thing: please just read my last post and the other posts I have done regarding this question. I promise you this is the most commonly asked question on this thread and it has been answered.

Can anyone give me advice on how detailed my "file update" should be in an email to admissions? I interviewed at AZCOM last week and since, i have found a DO to shadow and got a publication accepted.. Do i have to provide the DO name and the title, ect of the journal and paper??

For file update questions like these, call them and ask for proper protocol. Once you send it, call to see if they received it and call again to see if it has been processed.

The moral of the story is if you haven't received an interview and you want to know what to do, CALL THEM OFTEN. I can't make it any clearer. Yeah, it might seem like harassment. Yeah, you might not have much to say. But, if you don't, you will be left exactly where you are. It has happened to my SMP classmates so don't let it happen to you.
