You can always check out the discussions that took place on the 2014 Facebook page on the discussion board to get some early input that my class received. Also, once things start to get in full-swing with the 2015 page, that will become very useful and slightly more relevant. Also, the school did mail out a packet containing housing information that they've assembled from students or have had submitted to them, problem being they mailed it out <1 month before orientation (fail on their part). I would suggest contacting (I'm guessing the department on this) Student Services and see if they can provide you with a list which they may or may not be able to do presently. A lot of people also just came to town and did apartment shopping one week or weekend (not sure if that's an option or not).
As far as on-campus housing goes, I'm in it and don't mind it. There aren't too many issues that have come up since I've been here. I think the biggest problems/annoyances, for myself or people I know, has been: crickets (they were pretty bad in certain apartments August-September), closing down access to the apartment complex without prior notification for the ADA Diabetes walk (slightly problematic if you come back with a bunch of groceries and are in one of the apartments out in BFE in relation to the entryway), whiny kids (there are families here, and some of them do in fact have kids whining anytime you see them but for the most part it's not very problematic), no pets aside from fish in a 15 gallon aquarium (pro or con, depending on how you look at it), the mailboxes are set up like the postal service set them up (some apartment buildings have banks of mailboxes right next to them on either side, yet the mailboxes for said buildings are also in BFE in relation to the apartment building), and it is a slight pain to get packages from UPS or FedEx on-campus because they make all of those deliveries to the mail-room on-campus and not the apartments, which means that you have to either find out about a package arriving because you go and check there or because the apartment manager notifies you (which may or may not happen because he gets a bit busy and forgets, so best to go with the former means) and while you normally could get something delivered to you by those services on a Saturday elsewhere, it's not happening here. Also, there are definitely much nicer apartments to be had in the area, but these apartments aren't rundown, the newer ones are fairly-nice, and these apartments are significantly cheaper rent than those off-campus.
As you can tell, for the most part the cons are just nitpicks. Anytime I've had any maintenance issues they've been dealt with either the same day or by the next day, depending on when the apartment manager was notified. I personally plan on staying in student housing at least through next year (maybe all four) just because you really cannot beat the convenience and from what I've gathered, the only way to get everything bundled in with the on-campus housing (housing, internet, cable, local phone, 24/7 security, etc) for ~the same cost is only going to happen if you have roommates. I think the only thing I'll likely be attempting to change between now and next year is to get into an apartment with a washer and dryer in the unit as opposed to having to use communal stuff.
