Hi everyone. I have decided to apply early decision to Johns Hopkins, and am now looking into their biophysics department. I am not concerned with medical school placement, as I know that one can be accepted no matter his major/concentration. I simply would like to know what people who have been in contact with the department think of it. I really appreciate the help guys, and I hope you don't mind a soon-to-be HS senior posting on your board. Thanks again!

Hey Mike,

I have some friends that were in that program (we've all graduated). Their feedback is that it's an awesome program if you like/are good at physics. I know there are quite a few biophysicists/professors that do reproductive research and are well known for it. Students do great research in this field as well--publications are quite common working at the undergrad campus. As an aside...from what my friend said, they've had 100% acceptance rate for all premed biophysics majors. However, this major is relatively new, like the Hopkins Neuroscience major. I would say go for it...but you should get in contact with the department heads to give you more info via jhu.edu.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I will email some profs. later today.

One of the top 5 in the country, like bio.

Students in the major are the coolest, most laid-back people I've known at Hopkins.

Very very hard major. Most friends of mine had between 3.0-3.3 GPA there. So be careful.

I was a biophysics major at Hopkins. The major is very cool, and those who teach it are the best professors I have ever met. Talk to Dr. Cone, or Dr. Barrik there. If you want a real support go for biophysics program.

We did not have 100% med. School acceptances. Some of us went to med school, others just continued their work to in biophysics are graduate students.

Is it hard? Like any major, if you study, you will get somewhere. Would it prepare you for 42 in the MCATs? Most likely. What about recommendation letters? Do research, ask questions, and you will get the most competitive RL at Hopkins.

GPA. It ranges 3.0-3.9.

Arm yourself with math, and lots of it, phys, chem, bio. When you get there, you need to arm yourself with phys, chem, orgo, biochem, biophyschem, advanced phys, advanced math, and a whole lot of proteins. The whole entire department is based on the idea of determining the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids.

Good Luck
