I haven't seen a thread made for this yet so I thought I would start one. So who all is looking forward to the possibility of going to Glasgow for vet school? I know I am. 😀

For those of you who have interviews, are we supposed to get some kind of info packet in the mail? Joyce said she was going to send me one but that was almost a month ago now and my interview is in less than a month. Does anyone know how long it takes for mail to get from Glasgow to the US?

About 7 days I've found. And this should read C/O 2016 since they only offer a 5 year programme. All of the C/O 2015 were admitted last year.

She might have forgotten...they all got caught up with the big winter storm and having to reschedule interviews and such. The packet mostly has info that can be found on the website, plus a fun little DVD. So I wouldn't worry too too much if you don't get it, but i'm sure you can send a wee e-mail to Joyce and politely remind her! It should only take a few days to send over, depending on Royal Mail's mood 🙂

And my Dick vet friend up there is correct 😛 Y'all will be 2016! Yayyyy!

Ha. I have an interview in Febuary and I did not realize this. I read that some other UK schools have a different program where you end up graduating in four years (in your 2nd year you meet with the undergraduate students in their 3rd year). I wrongly assumed they did the same thing. My bad. 😳 I guess this will factor in whether or not I decide to go there.

I got the packet but no DVD 🙁

Ok maybe no DVD? I applied 2 years ago and they were still sending it then, sorry!!

Also, for some classes, Glasgow does have accelerated entry, but I think that last occurred with our current 4th years. It happens very, very rarely.

With respect to the 5 years: To be honest, I am SO glad I had that extra year. Yeah, I graduate a year later, compared to the US students, but it has helped in so many ways, and afforded me valuable experiences. Also, even with the added year, tuition is still cheaper than OOS for me would have been!!

I just asked a question on the other Glasgow thread and you partially answered it for me. 🙂

Hello All,
I got an e-mail today from Glasgow and I was made an offer for the Vet program, official letter to follow in the mail !!! :biglove:I'm so excited to be going to vet school , but to be going to vet school in Scotland!! I still can't believe i got in and I'm on my way to being a vet!! Anyways I just wanted to share the good news and hopefully touch base with others that are in the class of 2016! Also if your still interviewing don't freak out, I interviewed 1/29/11 kind of early and Joyce said I wasn't going to hear back until 2/12/11 when they get back to the UK.Maybe they emailed me early since i expressed that it was my top choice school. 😍 Any who good luck to all of those still interviewing (Joyce and professor Evans are so nice and the interview is so relaxed, 30mins went by so fast!) and good luck to those still waiting to hear back!

Congrats!! I have an interview this Monday and I am thrilled to hear that they get back to us so soon. Maybe I will see you on the other side of the pond. 😀

CONGRATS!! 😀
They are good about responding quickly---took a whole 30 minutes for me to get an e-mail, lol.

And you will come to love Neil (Prof. Evans)...he is a pretty funny guy, with excellent wardrobe choices.

That's amazing!😀

Haha I was here visiting my Big Vet, and decided to interview. Freaked out the entire way back to her flat because I thought it had been awful. I was checking my e-mail while she was in the bathroom, and she said all she could hear was me freaking out and she had no idea why!!

I have a question to people that have already interviewed (be is this year or years previous). I know that the interview is open book and they will ask you questions about your history. When I look at the interview feedback I see that a lot of the questions are very specific and often medical in nature. This freaked me out and I have been reading The Comprehensive Guide to Equine Veterinary Medicine from cover to cover to try and prepare for anything.

My question is: Did any interview questions catch you completely off guard? They seem incredibly specific and difficult but since they ask about your past maybe the interview feedback is misleading because the applicant was familiar with the topic.

Hey everyone,

I interviewed in Boston last year for Glasgow. It was a very relaxed interview where it was more conversation that rapid fire questions. They seem to really want to get to know you and your motivations for a) becoming a vet and b) why Glasgow?
In my experience, the questions were not very medically oriented(after all, that is what vet school is for!!) but more along the lines of asking about my experiences my views on certain issues.
They go off your CV and application essay quite a bit so make sure to take the time to review everything.
Additionally, come on time and prepared. Make you have thoughtful questions prepared beforehand (ie--research EMS program, costs etc), show you have done your research on the school.

I got an email with an offer the same evening I interviewed but didn't realize it until I checked my email the next morning! I almost ended up going to Glasgow but going to school within the US was preferable for me because of my SO and animals.

Good Luck everyone!

If anyone is interviewing this Monday I will see you there!

For those of you interviewing in Boston tomorrow or the next day, be sure to bring your ID with you. You need to check-in when you get into the building and I left my wallet at my hotel and almost wasn't let in!

Other than that, the process was great.

Thanks for the info, I have an interview tomorrow in boston, hopefully it will be okay, I am trying to think of questions to ask but its difficult cause I have wanted to go here for a long time so I've read a lot about the school and talked to students there already.

Just wanted to bump this thread , so that all of the Glasgow posts stay in the Glasgow C/O 2016 . It's so hard to keep up with the different Glasgow threads ( Glasgow ?, Glasgow, Glasgow C/O 2016), I feel that a lot of us will probably ask the same questions and have the same concerns so it's good to keep it all in one place!

Congrats Trytophantic on getting in!!!! Looks like I'll see you in Scotland in 7 months! YAY for the class of 2016!!

Bumping the thread again.

Hokiepaws12 and Tryptophanatic, have you received the official letter from Joyce yet? I'm ecstatic to have gotten in, but without the actual letter in my hand, it doesn't seem real.

Keeping this thread alive 👍

No I haven't received my official letter in the mail yet and it's driving me nuts! I feel just like you, it won't feel real until I have the letter in hand (and my deposit paid). Then I know 100% that I will be going to Glasgow and it's real 🙂 Maybe they will come in the mail next week?...or lets hope so!

I was wait-listed for Glasgow. 🙁

I'm sorry to hear that you got wait listed but on the bright side I' m sure a spot will open up! I seems like a lot of people applied to multiple overseas schools and got multiple acceptances (myself included), so the wait-list should move a bit once people decline their offers!

I sure hope so!
Damn Glasgow and their wonderful presentation for making me fall in love with the school. haha

Ditto! :xf:for you!

Thanks! I have already been accepted to UC Dublin, but in all honesty I would much rather go to Glasgow.

:xf:we get them soon - I'm trying to stave off senioritis until I have the deposit paid. Orgo homework just doesn't seem too important anymore...

Does anyone know when the first day of class is (or orientation)?

Does anyone know when the first day of class is (or orientation)?

It looks like the International Orientation last year was Sept. 7th: View attachment International Brochure.pdf

I'm not sure about the start of the term, though - I think I remember reading somewhere that it's different for the vet school, but I'm not entirely sure.

Here's another question for you guys - are you planning on staying in student accommodation or finding a place to rent?

* International Orientation doesn't apply to the vet school---woohoo longer summer break!

I know the question of when school starts was already answered but I found the academic calender online for Glasgow vet program here's the link http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_165406_en.pdf It's this year's calender but I can't see it changing much and it was neat to see what UK holiday's we get off like the queens birthday, cute! Also check out how long spring vacation is, it seems so much longer than my current university's spring break. (Also If I read this academic calender wrong please feel free to correct me lol)

As for housing I've been going back and fourth with this one. For starters I would be new to the country and I don't know the area so living on campus would be easier. Also I know that most of the vet students that stay on campus live in wolfsman building (I might have made the building name up I can't remember the exact name) and it seems like it would be fun to live with everyone. It would probably be like freshman year all over again. As much as I loved freshman year and the craziness I think I'm going to have to go with renting a flat! I'm not sure if I can bring myself to living the dorm room life again. Plus I believe I'm bringing my dogs with me. I already got them Microchiped, rabies vaccinated and the rabies titer test done so they should be able to travel by the end of July.

So as of right now my plan is to move to Glasgow mid August , find a Flat when I get there, set up a bank account, cell phone plan, buy household stuff and other life essentials before school starts only problem with this plan is

1) I have no idea where to stay when I get there.....do people stay in pet friendly hotels, bed and breakfasts or rent a place weekly until finding permanent housing?

2) I don't really know the area that well but I was thinking of getting a Flat in West End Glasgow... from what I have been reading/ seeing online. It lloks close to campus and looks like a nice area. Ideally I'm looking for a studio or one bedroom apartment, any thoughts? ...

Ok this is going to be a fast reply because I technically have to get ready to go to the farm, but I can add later 🙂

The calendar doesn't really change year to year, you're right. December break is 3 weeks. Spring break is a month for EMS purposes, usually because that is exactly when lambing season is. Summer is also long for EMS purposes.

My personal opinion is live in a private flat. Come April and May you will get tons of e-mails from upper years about sharing flats with them. It is a fabulous idea. You not only get to live with an upper year who knows the ropes, but your living situation is set before you get here. Sometimes people take a short trip over to find a flat in the summer, and then return in September. A few lived in Uni housing for a few weeks before finding a flat. Not too many people stay in hotels that I know of, but there are a few i'm sure. Wolfson is the closest dorm to the vet school, and a good way to meet people, but there are plenty of opportunities to get to know your class besides dorm life. Sometimes it is nice to be with people not in your year too, as you see them all day every day. Some of the more mature student housing is better if you want to do that...then you have the option of cooking for yourself, and it is not quite so loud to study.

The West End and Glasgow are the most popular places to stay. Anniesland is slightly cheaper in the ways of rent, and closer to the vet school. The West end is closer to the main uni, and a much more bustling area.

Hope that helps a bit!

That does help! 👍

Quick question, though - is there any area that you wouldn't recommend living (safety/comfort-wise)? I only ask because I probably won't be able to take a trip over before the start of the year. Having lived in a pretty *ahem* "interesting" area of Brooklyn, I'm a little cautious about finding a place to live - which is the only reason I considered student housing.

Mmm I would avoid Maryhill. The West End, Anniesland, Bearsden, and Partick are all pretty safe bets!!

Wow, I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this awesome forum! Hello everyone!

I have a follow up question about housing. I would prefer to live in some sort of campus housing, but I don't want to live in catered housing (Wolfson). I kinda enjoy cooking my own food =]. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, is there a facebook group for University of Glasgow Vet Med C/O 2016? I looked and couldn't find one. Thanks!

Kelvinhall, Queen Margaret, Murano---But i'm not sure how much choice you get in what building you are in? Not entirely sure--i'll have to check. Also, rent is much higher per month, just a forewarning!!

Hey, so I am visiting the school in late March and was wondering if there is anything that is a must do in glasgow? my grandmother and I are only going to be there for about a day and a half, and I emailed joyce to set up a tour, but I was just wondering if there is something else cool so see in the city. Thanks🙂

Also joyce said something about guest accommodation on the vet campus, any info on that? thanks again

The Cathedral and Necropolis are must sees. Buchanan Street Galleries are fun for just walking and shopping around, as well as lots of good places to eat. The Botanics and Kelvingrove are probably the highlights of the West End 🙂

As for vet campus accommodation---no idea! Sorry!

Does anyone have any idea of how the wait-list works for Glasgow? Are my chances still decent for acceptance?

I know it's not much help, but I'd assume that once April 15th rolls around, they'll pull from the wait-list. I'm not [un]lucky enough to have a choice, so I can't say for sure, but I think alot of people who get into Glasgow and a school in the States tend to go for the school in the States, and those who do plan on going abroad go for the 4 year programs as opposed to the 5 year Glasgow program. I'd still be optimistic. Hopefully someone who got pulled from the wait-list will stumble across this thread and be much more helpful than I could ever be 🙂

UCD is a great school/program/in an awesome city, and even though I have yet to hear back (and am therefore assuming rejection/wait-listed), I have a co-worker who keeps trying to convince me to choose it over Glasgow... she's Irish, so maybe just a bit biased 😉.

I'm pulling for you to get into Glasgow though :xf:

Well I've decided to make a trip to Glasgow before classes start in September as suggested. This seems like a better option than just going and trying to find housing when I get there since I'll have my two little dogs with me 😀 Also I can take my time looking for housing, and I'll get to do touristy things as well! I'm planning on going May15-22nd and I'm pretty excited! I haven't set it up yet but I would like to tour the school and vet school at some point during my visit! I just wanted to share my plans since I'm super excited to be visiting my future home! 🙂

Thank you ShortnSweet, that helps a bit. The private flats are starting to sound more and more like the better choice.

HokiePaws, that sounds like a good plan! I wanna bring my dog with me too, but I'm worried he might be getting too old to be traveling around the world. Plus, he's pretty big and quite a hands full.

Has anyone received their acceptance packet in the mail yet? I have not and I'm wondering if I should e-mail Ms.Wason about it. I realize I'm chomping at the bit (veterinary pun intended) a little, but I want to be prepared for all the due dates and details.

I totally understand - I just want to get the deposit paid and all the loans and housing straightened out, but we should get them soon. According to a thread from last year, it looks like people started getting their packets mid-March: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=701839&highlight=2015+Glasgow&page=3.

Bumping this up again.

I also had a quick question for Shortnsweet, or anyone else who's attending an overseas school. Obviously we'll be covered by NHS during school, but what do you do about health insurance when you return to the States for summer vacation?

Well, I plan on keeping my health insurance in the states for a few reasons 1) I'm thinking of doing a few EMS in the states, and if I'm working with animals I would want to be insured just in case I got trampled by cows or something lol 2) It takes a while to apply for a plan, get approved and start coverage so it might be hard to get covered for short periods of time not sure.. 3) I've learned my lesson with playing Russian roulette with health insurance lol long story short I got dropped from my parents plan b/c of my age , was being a cheap o and didn't want to get another plan since i never get sick but my parents said otherwise, within one week of my coverage starting I got deathly sick had to have emergency surgery and racked up a health bill of ~$38,000 dollars maybe more lol thank goodness I had health insurance and only had to pay $2,000 out of pocket! Of Course I'm not living in the UK yet and cannot say if having NHS and having a health insurance plan in the states is overkill but I would suggest just having something small so if something does happen to you over a break you'll be covered 👍

P.S Did anyone ever find a facebook group for the Glasgow vet med c/o 2016 if not I might start one , thoughts?🙂
