I am completely breed prejudiced against ridgebacks after this episode happened in my hometown with a family that I grew up with!

Idiot doctor has extremely aggressive, poorly socialized & uncontrolled ridgebacks. They bit a girl's ear off, lopped a chunk out of another girl's shoulder, and countless smaller attacks. ONE of his dogs was finally euthanized last month. What about the other extraordinarily dangerous dogs? I hate it when rich people buy their way out of justice!

... but seriously, I think there ought to be restrictions on who can own these dogs. I'm sure they're lovely when conscientious owners spend extra effort training, but they are dangerous weapons in others' hands. I will never be able to look at a ridgeback the same after these incidents 🙁.

I'm not trying to downplay these incidents at all, but this argument could be made about many breeds. In a bad owner's hands, any breed can be made vicious - I understand that certain breeds are more likely to be influenced, but even "family" breeds can be aggressive. The most terrifying dog I've ever met was a chocolate lab. Likewise, even with a wonderful owner, some dogs are vicious on their own.

Several ridgebacks board at the kennel I work at, and my aunt and uncle have owned ridgebacks for years. All the ridgebacks I've known have been wonderful dogs (if a bit loud/stubborn)... but I do get where you're coming from.

Interesting I have never heard anyone ever complain that a Ridgeback is aggressive/mean. I have probably encountered / interacted with 50+ different Ridgebacks (maybe more given I am bit older....39 years old...just saying I have met quite a few Ridgebacks) and none of them were aggressive or mean or attacked anyone. I even worked with a Ridgeback specific trainer for beginner and immediate training...and she could validate their disposition w/out being biased. My dog rarely barks (well if she hears loud noises). In fact they are known to have a quiet and gentle disposition (not just me saying that...you can read up on that as well). My dog was abused and a rescue and she has never been aggressive, in fact she would rather flee than "fight".

I have to say that what you say curryspice is soley the owner's erroneous and bad/ extreme training approach (or whatever you choose to call it). And I strongly disagree with what you say about how "dangerous" Ridgebacks are. In all instances in life there will be exceptions and I think the example you provided is one of them.

So I just got back from Glasgow last week and had a wonderful trip!!!
I really wanted to find a flat before Sept and I did exactly that. It took like four days to find something.I decided to take everyone's advice and live in Anniesland. Also I decided that I did not want to do on campus housing since Wolfson is the closest housing to the vet school since it is pretty much on the vet school campus. However since I am older I did not want the true first year experience, been there done that lol Also I believe that the other campus housing with older students is near the main campus which was too far out for me. Anniesland is truly close to the school and is the only area in my opinion where you would be able to walk to the vet school without the walk being too long. The vet school is pretty far out from everything more than I was thinking it was.You could walk to the vet school if you live close to the main west end area where the main campus is but it would take about 45 minutes give or take to get the vet school.Overall getting a flat was not to difficult and actually easy. I looked at flats through letting agencies and private landlords both of which were super helpful! I ended up signing a lease with a private landlord since they had the nicest flat available at the time. I did have to pay a deposit and pet deposit up front which I was expecting since its like that in the US. I am paying a bit more in rent to live by myself but I decided I can always find a roommate later if i want one once I really get to know people. Plus my neighbors will be be a second year vet student and her roommate will be a first year vet student ,both Americans so it kind of works out.

So here are a few things that I found helpful when looking for flat
1) Do NOT let pictures fool you.I found that flats that looked super nice in pictures with stainless steel appliances, nice bathrooms, nicely furnished etc.. were not that nice and actually ghetto lol.
2) The buildings from the outside are super deceiving! They can look nice on the outside but the flat can be really dated/ rundown. The reverse holds true. The building can look super ghetto and run down on outside/hallways but the flats are super nice on the inside.
3) If you try to contact landlords and letting agencies just using email, they are less likely to get back to you. I bought a pay as you go phone for pretty cheap ($40~) from voada as was able to schedule viewings of flats with greater ease
4) Please note that letting agencies and landlord were somewhat put off when I said I was a student and that I had pets. However once I explained my age and how small my dogs were they were willing to show me the flats.
5) In order to rent a flat I did need a letter from the vet school saying that I was going to be a student and a photo copy of my passport. Both the private landlords and letting agencies asked for this. Letting agencies did want 3 references and they charge a fee of like 60-85 pounds I believe in order to process the paper work and check references if I had chosen one of their properties. Also I think with the letting agencies too you had to put a deposit down plus one months rents ahead of time. Of course this can be like the US too for some management companies.
6) If you want to live close to the vet school use Morrisons grocery store as a reference point since the flats around Morrisons were nicer and close to the vet school.
7) DO NOT try to rent a flat from the US please make sure you look at it before renting it!!
8) Places to look for a flat; The emails from Jill Kerr , Gumtree is like Craigslist however unlike the US flats are posted as soon at they are available not months before. So this will be good for those of you coming over in September. Rightmove.com was also good because it shows you all the available properties from all letting agencies.
9) Also if you plan on trying to find a place right before school give yourself some time!! I would say at least two weeks minimum. I say this because EVERYTHING IN GLASGOW CLOSES AT 6PM except for a handful of pubs and restaurants. So it takes a bit of planning to get things done since everything closes so early. Also the jet lag was a bit miserable lol. It was only a five hour difference for me and I was so sleepy most of the trip lol
Hope this helps!!!!
*Disclaimer these are my own opinions and thoughts so if if got something wrong sorry....lol 😀

Hokiepaws this is very useful info. Thanks for taking the time to provide it. Curious for anyone on this thread..I completed by FAFSA and just got the letter from Glasgow telling my what my CoA is and with the associated amounts per loan "distributor" and comment:
*Please note this is the maximum amount that you can borrow in Stafford/Plus and Private Loans excluding USDE Fees

I am older and have no family contributions whatsoever but given that I am older I have got a few bill I am bringing with me (unfortunately humanly impossible for me to pay everything off before I go to Glasgow). I will need a wee bit more that than of the CoA amount. Is the CoA amount the end all be all that I can get? Can I borrow a bit more? Does anyone do that? I honestly thought I would qualify for a bit more and would not be severely stressed about the $$$ thing ...but now I find myself stressed. I am definitely trying to be frugal and thrifty here and aware of the financial burden....but still need a wee bit more. Thoughts anyone?

Tambotie, have you spoken to Carol about it? She was really helpful with my financial aid.

On another note - anyone joining Friday morning's chat?

RdLessTraveled I did speak to Carol and she was pretty adament on the amount they give (not giving me more)...which I truly understand. I think I have about 25K for the year to live off of. And I really don't want to borrow more actually, once I thought about it for a few days. 🙂 Not trying to go more into debt than I will be at the end of this. 😉 I am going to do some consulting for current financial job in the summmer to make some extra income. I was just worried about making the 25K stretch over 12 months vice 9-10 months.....I will have a few bills when I get there initially (which will be humanly impossible to pay off before I get there), but should get rid of them over the next year. Hopefully, I can borrow a little less, meaning not needing to accept all that I qualify for the next several years.

I am joining the chat!! It will be nice to talk to people vs over e-mail for everything!

All, could use some advice for those of you that have already traveled to Glasgow (or elsewhere in the UK with a pet). My dog is about 80lbs and British Airways quoted me about $2400 for her as cargo. Virgin Atlantic quoted me ~$1600 but they don't fly to Glasgow so I would have to take a train from Heathrow to Glasgow. I was floored by this amount. Is this normal?? It very well may be but I was shocked. Can anyone give me some advice / suggestions on how they got there with pet(s) ...and what you paid to travel with pet (one the size of my dog that is).

Honestly those prices sound about right from what all my friends who brought their pets over said, and for such a big dog. Some people went the boat route, which is cheaper, but fills up really fast.

For ease of travel for you and her the first time, you might also want to consider flying out of Philly or Newark with US Airways or Continental, which both have direct flights to Glasgow.

Thanks Shortnsweet for the info. I did check the Queen Mary but is already full. 🙁 I really wish I would have investigated that avenue further and way sooner. Oh well, but I will look at U.S airways and Continental....

Hey Tambotie,
I just wanted to let you that if you check the defra website you will see that when you fly into the UK with a pet you have to fly into to the UK on an approved Air route only. It is part of the pet travel scheme. For VA you can only fly out of Dulles Airport (IAD) and then fly into London Heathrow airport (LHR) to enter the UK with a pet.You cannot fly straight into Glasgow nor Edinbugh from the US since these routes do not follow the pet travel scheme. Also the only pet travel scheme approved cargo companies for the state of VA are Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. The quotes you got are right since your dog is so large. For my two small dogs 6lbs and 8lbs with Virgin Atlantic the cost is $1200 for both and then upon arrival in the UK there are additional charges of 323 pounds for both dogs to cover the UK border agency handling fees. Also I plan on taking train from London Euston train station to Glasgow Central train station with my dogs. Passengers are allowed up to two pets for free on the train. You could also drive from London to Glasow or once your dog clears customs you could fly from London to Glasgow. If you have any questions I will be more than glad to help if I can.It has taken me a while to find everthing on the Defra website but I am about done with everything. All that is left is to go to Richmond to see the State APHA certified Vet to get the third country health certificates for the dogs😀 I cannot wait until my dogs have their pet passports!! it will be loads easier!!!

Hiya hokiepaws! I booked my flight yesterday on Virgin Altantic...and made my doggie reservation today for that flight. 🙂 I knew I had to go through Heathrow port of entry. I am going to this week also book my train (I assume I have to book this...not sure how this part works yet) from Heathrow to Glasgow as well as my temporary B&B, hotel, whatever, for when I get there. I have that doggie form to complete as well. Yeah, I plan to submit my app for my student visa this week too. 🙂

When are you flying out?. I'm leaving the US the 6th of Sept. Also for the train tickets they had kiosk where you could buy the tickets or a window in the station. I have been debating whether to buy a ticket early or wait... since I am not sure how long they will hold the dogs. One girl told me they held her dogs for five hours....😱

I am flying there August 30th. As I need to find my permanent flat once I get there! I am going to attempt to schedule several "viewings" of flats so that when I arrive I already have a schedule. I feel a bit nervous but others have "assured" me I should not have issues with finding a place.

Hey Tambotie quick question,

Since you are taking you dog to the UK on Virgin Atlantic. For the certificate of acclamation it says it has to be filed out by an USDA accredited vet can't this be the same vet that fills out the international health certificate since they are APHIS accredited?😕 Also to double check only the following forms are needed 1) International health certificate-endorsed by USDA 2)Veterinary Certificate 3) Certificate of acclimation 4) Pet health certificate?

Hey, I am not sure what the certificate of acclimation is...well is that was you get at the USDA??? Here is what I was going to do: Complete along with my veterinarian the veterinary certificate (with exception to the flea and tick info that has to be done and info provided on form 24-48 hours prior to check-in of dog), go to the USDA a week or so prior to my departure, get them to stamp the form, and I understand there is an additional form to complete that they give you once there ...but I am not totally for sure (this might be the acclimation form but of course your own vet can't complete that if you are at the USDA). Okay, I so I am a bit sketchy on this additional piece of paperwork and can I scan and email my stuff to them and have them stamp it and scan and send/fax back to me...dunno. This form I mentioned may be the acclimation form but I am not sure. BUT I am planning to review again tonight all of the materials that I printed off regarding this....so stay tuned I may be more informed tomorrow. 🙂

And by the way, I am flying Virgin to Heathrow and staying near the airport w/doggie the night of the day I get there and then taking a British Airways flight the next morning from Heathrow to Glasgow.

I have these forms:

1) the PETS Health Certificate (Virgin Atlantic provided), and

2) Veterinary Certificate (that you and your vet primarily complete and this goes to USDA and has to get stamped by the USDA...and you bring this back with you and vet does the flea an tick stuff 24-48 hours prior to check-in...and puts that info on the form....and then the form is complete.

So I am not sure what form you get from the USDA while there...and if it is one of the other forms you mentioned....but I will investigate further.

Hokiepaws - I have been e-mailing a fellow student that will be starting this fall with us...we started communicating when we did that web thing a while back and had some similar questions about our doggies, here is what she said:

I found out that you have to go to USDA 10 days before your flight to get the E998 endorsed (veterinary certificate).

The flea and the tick will be 24-48 hrs prior to your arrival to uk. The tick and the flea stuff gets filled on the same form as E998 but that is after the USDA has endorsed the rabies portion. Then you are good to go.

Also, found out this info when I went to USDA was that there is an additional form that USDA will give you which needs to be completed (APHIS 7001) not sooner than 10days before your departure. Then you take the E998 + aphis form to get it endorsed together. Then you will take the forms to your vet 24-48 hrs before and get it completed for the tick portion.

You should be able to get the APHIS 7001 form from your vet - also there is a copy of it online - http://www.aphis.usda.gov/library/forms/pdf/APHIS7001.pdf

That way you can get it filled out by your vet at the same time as your E998 and take them both to the USDA 10 days prior or less to your flight to be endorsed. If you do it separately you may have to pay the USDA fee twice!
