To answer
1. Take the MCAT once you are reaching your desired score on test exams taken like it is a real exam. You want to be shooting for late spring early summer.

2. ASAP, this can really screw you up since you are dependent upon someone out of your control doing something for you. Some writers are quick but I am sure you will be tracking down at least one writer for months to get it done. Use Interfollio too, worked great for me.

2A. Most schools want a letter from a DO so go for it. Your shadowing can also make for great experiences to talk about in your secondary / interview.

Since you want to start applying in June/July start cracking the whip on these items. SDN's unofficial mantra is "APPLY EARLY"

Don't feel overwhelmed, just take it one day at a time. Concentrate on your classes to get those all important A's. This should help you get your two letters from science professors. Next kick the MCAT's butt. It is very similar to the AMCAS practice exams so make sure you are scoring in your target range before taking the real thing. Taking it early and scoring a 20 does not help you!

Good luck, by this time next year I am sure you will be giving the same advice to the class of 2014!

If if makes you feel better I am about 2 weeks away from finishing TPR and I still feel overwhelmed....I should have taken everyone's advise and reduced my class load. 18 units + Research + club leadership + MCAT = TOO MUCH! :scared::scared: That's why I pushed mine back till July. It gives me 2 months after the semester to devote entirely to preparing for that test.

Something to consider the registration for this spring/summer is filling up. If you want to take the MCAT you probably want to get it booked while there are still spots.

I'm applying this 08-09 cycle. Got half the recs, working on the rest. Taking MCAT on 5/27... very excited and nervous.
 
I know that each medical school has its own requirements for LORs, but can you send MORE than what they require?

I understand it's a slippery slope. 2 STRONG letters is probably more beneficial than sending 2 strong + 3 mediocre ones.

That being said, I have good relationships with many faculty members who have never TAUGHT me before, but have assisted me in research, student organizations, etc.

Should I just stick with two professor that I've had in class -- or do I throw in my pre med advisor, my research professor, the Dean, etc. too?

*we don't have a committee at my school
*I will also include my DO LOR

Some schools will have a requirement that you have letters from professors who have taught you in a class. It might read something like "2 science teachers and 1 non-science teacher"

Other schools will require a committee letter.

There may be options for substituting if you cannot meet the requirements, for whatever reason.

But you signed up for interfolio, right? You can pick and choose what letters go where.

So get letters from people who you think will write good ones for you, and then get letters from people who have taught you, just to be on the safe side. If you don't feel good about those, only send them to the schools who specifically state that they require letters from your teachers.

Is it ok to send two LORs from non-science faculty??

or are they gonna be like, "ok lady, we said 1 non-science faculty, why are you sending us 2..."
 
They won't care.

There was one school (can't remember which one) whose website specifically says not to send more than what they ask for. They also did not require a DO letter, so I applied before I got mine. Then, when I got my DO letter in, I called and asked if I could send it in, and they said they didn't care if I went over their limit.

No, you have to sign a waiver with Interfolio and have it sent with the letter just like any other way. But, my DO sent me a copy too so I could see what it said. Some doctors and professors will show you. However, as long as you ask if they can write you an excellent recommendation letter, and they say yes, it should be good.

Some schools like it, others REALLY do not. It shows them that you can't follow directions or something. Anyway, like TT said, as long as you get an approval from a school, going over the limit might be just fine. With that said, as long as you have strong letters that are required, I don't know how much having more letters will actually do for you.
 
A few faculty members have asked to write a LOR for me, and I would REALLY hate to turn down a potentially strong letter based on restrictions.

I will look into what each school prefers!

Good idea! Some schools will encourage it. Anyway, I wouldn't turn anybody down, just have them send the letters to interfolio. Then you can do what you want with them without the professors thinking you didn't want/need their letter.
 
D-Day: July 8th. Lock and load, mammajammas.

Quick question: anyone know where I should go for a chest X-ray? Just now getting around to getting a PCP, but I'd like to get this out of the way before then. Can't start volunteering until I get this cleared (stupid PPD false positives), so I want to get it done quickly.

wait guys...im still confused. 😕

how does interfolio exactly work? IM used to asking my teachers to mail to school directly my LOR.

Now... am I supposed to tell my teachers to send my LORs through Interfolio? does that mean i can read it? I really think they dont want me to read the LOR they wrote or do they?? What if they dont use interfolio?? I dont want to ask them to use something they are not familiar to....

Interfolio is the best invention ever. You create an account and you have your writers send the letter directly there. Then you can have interfolio send your letters to any school.

This is particularly good when different schools have different requirements. Like a school that requires a letter from a non-science professor, but maybe you get one that you don't think is that good. You can set it up to be sent only to that school, instead of all of them.

Some schools can receive the letters from interfolio electronically.

It is awesome.

how common is that requirement? common enough that i should get one b/c inevitably one of the schools i am applying to will require it? right now i just have science profs and a doc.

Out of the schools I applied to the only one that required it was Nova. UNECOM does ask for a non-science letter but it doesn't have to be a professor. I got one from a former supervisor/friend.

In regards to Interfolio, if your (other poster that is) professors can mail a letter to a school then they can mail a letter to Interfolio. They don't have to do the electronic uploading if they don't want to. One of my professors tried that and for some reason they kept not receiving (supposedly) the signature he was sending in. You don't have to see your letters and shouldn't unless your writers want you to. You can't just access a copy of the letter by signing into your Interfolio account.
 
Does a school's committee letter take the place of the LORs that schools want? I have several letters in my folder at my school, and from what i understand my advisor uses them all in writing the committee letter. Would I then send that and additionally the requested LORs?

Yep. Just send the committee letter and you should be covered. Plus a letter from a DO at some schools.

At my school the committee sends their letter as well as all of the other LORs that I have. I have 7 letters, including DO docs and professors, I am not sure if I can pick and choose which letters I want them to send to different schools. Is this a big problem or should it be ok?

I'm guessing its that time of the semester where the "Oh crap!" mode kicks in, with tests, finals, and the MCAT coming up.

My personal countdown:

46ish days until Finals
60 days until MCAT

Also, I'm kind of getting bummed out thinking ahead to the many, many sleepless nights to come. I'm rather addicted to sleep, actually. Seem to do it every night, and haven't been able to find a way to stop yet. What are other people's experiences with staying awake (and maybe more importantly alert and coherent)? Is caffeine the treatment of choice? I hate coffee ... any alternative drinks out there?

Hate to be lazy and just state the obvious, but tea's a pretty good substitute. Get something black that suits your taste and you should be pretty set.
