**class Of 2013**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hate to be lazy and just state the obvious, but tea's a pretty good substitute. Get something black that suits your taste and you should be pretty set.

I do love tea, but that might be why I don't really feel the effects anymore. Maybe I'll go decaff, then start up again when overnights come around. I've been hooked on Rooibos tea lately anyway. Mmm tasty. Great, now you've got me wanting some. This clearly is all your fault, you know. Thank goodness for electric kettles. (runs off to make some tea)

Also, I'm kind of getting bummed out thinking ahead to the many, many sleepless nights to come. I'm rather addicted to sleep, actually. Seem to do it every night, and haven't been able to find a way to stop yet. What are other people's experiences with staying awake (and maybe more importantly alert and coherent)? Is caffeine the treatment of choice? I hate coffee ... any alternative drinks out there?

I have found that when it's go time and I need to keep going sugar free red bull's usually do the trick. I met a med student once that used no-doz. He figured out exactly how much to take to keep him up with out getting shaky. I tried it, it does work, and is less expensive than coffee/ red bulls. It takes a bit of fiddling to find the right dose. I start with half a pill and then another half at 30 minute intervals until I am awake. The trick is not overdoing it.

BTW, this is all unhealthy.....in case it wasn't obvious 😉

You should be thanking me! Just think of all the good chemicals you're leeching out of those leaves.

1- Thanks for the info Eric, I'll keep it in mind. And of COURSE its unhealthy! We're not actually supposed to practice what we preach, right? "Healthy eating" "exercise" and "sleep" is just something to tell to patients.

2- Haha, thanks Joe. Nothing says MmMmGood like a steaming cup of chemicals in the morning.

3- I was going to make a post about how I got an acceptance without even applying . . . but April Fools is almost over at this point. Oh well, another missed opportunity flys by. Did anyone pull and/or hear of any good pranks today (besides our own lovely SDNs)? Gmails was pretty funny.

Hi everyone!!

I'm a former Class of 2012 hopefull. Waitlisted at LECOM-Erie but I think I'm going to go ahead and reapply instead of waiting. I think I applied waaaay too late in the game. Lots of luck to everyone and hope to see you all during the interview season!!

JMarie, are you going to do a post-bac for the year off? I hear some programs are still accepting.

Yeah, I'm prepping for the reapp cycle coming in like 2 months. It's hard to believe that just yesterday I was calling schools do double check if I was complete because their online systems were never updated.

Good luck to everyone! I hope things ramp up in here soon so we can get some advice thrown here and there.

Speaking of which, I have to make an MDapps page.

I'm not doing a post-bac program. I actually graduated in 2006 and have been working at the Yale Cancer Center coordinating clinical trials. It's great and I'm finally published which was one of my big goals after graduating. Plus I'm getting ridiculous patient experience... (I highly recommend a job in this field before med school)

For anyone else reapplying, how much revamping are you going to do to your essays? I feel like my AACOMAS essay was pretty solid and I still love it and don't want to change it! Should I?

Wow, that sounds great. I thought about research, but I'm going straight into an SMP.

And yes, you should change your essay, unless you plan on applying to all new schools. Old schools have your app on file and they want to see something new, especially something that has changed since then. I mean, I'm sure you want to mention your time at Yale, so you should take some time to fit that in.

i just wanted to get myself out in the open again...
i applied for DO schools this year very late with a 22R mcat...very doubtful ill be getting in anywhere.
So, i just want to extend my hand in friendship out to all those applicants for this upcoming cycle. I will join you with this cycle with an early application and a retake of the MCAT.
heres hoping for the best to everyone!

yay Matt 🙂

Orgo test over - more posts to follow

Hello, I am somewhat new to these forums. (I haven't posted much, but I've been doing my fair share of lurking.)

I am planning to apply to D.O. schools this coming summer for '09 entrance. I just wanted to describe my current situation in case anyone is in the same boat as I am.

I graduated with a B.A. in Spanish in '07, and have spent this past year focusing on the pre-reqs. I should be done with all my pre-reqs by the end of May, except I may have to retake 1st semester of g-chem since the lab component was not offered at my undergrad. I have yet to take the mcats, and I have a LOT of studying and reviewing to do (I've really only practiced the verbal reasoning so far).

I have a question though - is it recommended that I submit my AACOMAS application in June, even if by then I have not taken the mcat, nor secured a hospital volunteering position (I'm currently in the process of applying for such a position)? Or should I wait until August, when I may have more of the aforementioned completed?

I already feel a bit behind...and the '09 cycle hasn't even started!

I know a girl who got a BA in Spanish and went to med school. She is an intern at the hospital where I work, and she is headed to Duke for derm soon. She is way smart.

i asked this exact question regarding MCAT to the recruiter from Western U when they came to give a presentation about their program and osteopathic medicine.......

she said with out a doubt get your app in early, even with out an MCAT. that way when you get it, it is sent in and then you are ready. as far as volunteering...what else have you done? it shouldn't hold you back. at the least you can mention that you will be volunteering there throughout the process.

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely apply in June then, despite not having had taken the MCAT by then. Western will be one of my designations. It's somewhat close to my house, and I would love to remain near my family (but that's getting way ahead of myself).

Other recent volunteer experiences I have are with American Red Cross (30 hours so far) and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 300+ hours). As for work experience, I've tutored at a center for over a year in bio, chem, writing, and math.

In case you are wondering, my own personal experiences with both allopathic and naturopathic medicine are what have ultimately brought me here. Unfortunately, my volunteer and work experiences probably do not reflect my interest in D.O. field, so I'm concerned that the admissions committees will think that I am scrambling to add volunteer & work positions just to please them.

Hey Star! I am SO incredibly jealous of your Spanish major! I pretty much fail at foreign languages (on that note, I pretty much fail at English too), but that major is going to help you out in SO many ways. Not sure what part of the country you are hoping to be in for Med School, but as far as Western/So Cal goes, and probably tons of other places as well, that major is a HUGE plus. Milk it for all its worth. 😀

Wow, I can't believe it took me so long to get in on this thread. I'm an April 18th MCATer and for sure a June appli-er.

I'm feeling pretty discouraged about the MCAT right now, and with less than two weeks left...bleh. Maybe I'll feel better after another practice test tomorrow.

Anyway...PCOM seems to be my top choice on paper, but I've been really interested in AZCOM lately.

I'm excited for all this support😀

Hey Doc Henry! No sweat, you'll do amazing on the MCAT! Keep up that studying. Two more weeks and you're done!

I tend to forget how useful Spanish is in So Cal, and I've always been jealous of all the bio majors! I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. 😎

I know that AMCAS limits your WORK/EXPERIENCES to 15 entries on the application -- does anyone know how AACOMAS is set up? How are you choosing your best 15?

thanks!

If I remember correctly, you can select "add another experience" or something like that, and it will create another entry for you.

I might be wrong though.

Maybe I'm boring, but I don't think I'll even fill up 15 spots. I think I have around 12 things I feel are worthwhile to put on the app. My advisor really stressed not to add "fluff" (not implying that you are), so I'm being pretty picky about what I choose.

I put down 21 ECs in this past application cycle.
I think I will perhaps add just one or two for this upcoming application cycle.
but as far as my PS is concerned. I am going to take people's advice and rewrite it. I will keep the general idea and theme present...but perhaps accentuate more recent activities.
I would recommend finishing up a PS early on. and having some essays prepped for the secondaries--cause you WILL get secondaries from almost EVERY school.

I have a couple of questions about the personal statement and secondary applications. What prompt is the personal statement addressing? Is it "why do you want to become a D.O.?"

And what if you find that the essays on the secondary applications are addressing topics that you have already covered in your personal statement? We shouldn't repeat ourselves, right?

Set me straight. I am clearly a newb.

I would answer whatever it is the question asks, otherwise it could seem like you can't follow a simple prompt. Even so, it is probably not a good idea to copy/paste exactly from your PS, if you already covered that topic. If the question-that-was-answered-in-PS situation happens and repeating yourself bugs you, try answering the issue from a different perspective or maybe recruit a writing-talented friend to help design a different spin for your answer.

and you know what the worst part about it is?
you write about "why osteopathic medicine" in your PS....
then again in your secondary...
and if you get interviewed, guess what they ask you?!
its hard not to feel redundant!

yeah, secondaries are like ATM's for schools.

free money!

I've heard quality over quantity a million times in relation to work/experiences too

Where are all the 2009'ers - helloooo....come out to play!!

Yeah, 2009ers!

Sorry, I think that's about all I've got. Just came back from trivia and I need some sleep before work. Also water. To fight the hangover.

this thread is too close to the 2nd page. class of 2013 does not EVER belong on the second page. not on my watch.

I completely agree - I will discuss the weather to keep Class of 2013 off of page 2:meanie:

Diet, Disease and Exercise. its an awesome class. we only have one test the whole year tho, and it happens to be this monday. alas, my weekend is sacrificed.

edit: it is only 6 oclock in LA tho. i may be able to finish a lil early and go goof around for a while. this weekend is Relay 4 Life to raise money for breast cancer. ill have to go down to the track at some point tonight and contribute to my teams efforts.

It does sound interesting, but one test the whole year?!? good luck studying!

yeaaaa. kinda lame. this class satisfies our "junior writing requirement" so even though it is science oreinted and we learn about the biochemistry of all the diseas we are learning and how diet and exercise effect our bodies..... there is only one test. we have 4 papers (one big one at the end) and a 30 minute presentation on the effect of some aspect of diet on a specific disease.......

i'm doing my presentation on omega-3's (and consequently omega 6 as well) and their effect on rheumatoid arthritis. should be interesting...i have that next monday.

yeah relay for life.....hour 5 here....getting a little tired of walking around the track though

i'm completely finished May 9th - then I get to enjoy my glide year.

By "enjoy" I mean, study for the MCAT, work to pay back loans, complete med school applications, work on secondaries, and get ready for interviews - yahoo!

The bright side : no more Organic chem lecture MWF at 8am

That is one hell of a brightside.

Just finished my first volunteer shift! It was badass, but I'm hella tired. Dinner, shower, going out!

One-three is the way to be.

I'm officially done May 7th at 930PM after my anatomy final. however i am dedicated to MCAT from then til May 27th......THEN the party begins, at least til i get back my scores, haha

My party will begin promptly following my first acceptance -- like all other significant moments in my life, it will be a night that I have to call my parents to pick me up 🙂
