Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yeah i'm going to try and readjust the eyepieces today. i definitely squint a lot during histo. and i'll definitely try the up and down thing and looking away.

EL -- someone already made that suggestion to me yesterday 🙂 👍 definitely trying that today.

i actually don't mind histo too much except that it makes me feel like i was on a roller coaster upside down for hours.

Try dramamine too for the nauseousness!

Once it was Reed for Anatomy, then Holford for PD. I believe it won't happen again for PD, it seemed like an honest mistake stemming from the 3 day weekend, as our lab was needed up as well

I am pretty sure that he rarely missed anatomy lectures during my 1st year. There may have been 1 or 2 due to illness. Never had any problems with PD class.

Did you ever get your locker issue resolved? It seems a little unusual that it's taking this long...

No, its not been resolved yet. 🙁

GAHHHHH trying to memorize origins/insertions and going crazy!!!!!!! i feel like i can't retain anything right now. i've tried flashcards, writing notes/study guides, drawing pictures, and i still can't quite seem to get the hang of it.

HELPPPPPP 😱

i want to cry -- feeling a little overwhelmed right now wahhhhh 🙁

You'll be okay, I promise.

Go to bed now... your brain is fried and can't take in any more info.

Tomorrow, try studying in the lab, with the cadaver. It makes a lot more sense when you can see and feel it in 3D. Don't freak out so much about the names of where things attach; just understand it visually. There are few if any questions that I remember that asked for super specific origins and insertions... mostly just muscle ID or a piece of tape on a bone asking for a muscle that inserts there. You're thinking of it like memorizing vocabulary words - it doesn't work like that. You need to get in there and form a visual/tactile mental image of the cadaver. Move its legs around. See what happens when you tug on a muscle. Sit a skeleton next to you and look and feel where the muscles are attaching. Move your own arms and legs around and feel which muscles do what. Work systematically and do something different every day. Don't always start from the beginning.

And get a tutor if you want to.

And then go home and eat some ice cream! The brain needs glucose! Dr. Avadhani says so in biochem 😛

I completely agree. There is no substitution for practicing on the real thing. Memorizing isn't helpful, actually making sense of it and seeing it in action is helpful!

If you do try to resort to memorization, try to do similar groups (extensors, innervated by blah, whatever). Lump 'em together, and then come up with a mnemonic. It's a bit desperate, but it can cover some bases quickly.

It'll be OK. I was feeling like I'd never get the intrinsics down on Sunday and Monday, just couldn't figure it out at all and my brain was fried and I thought I was gonna be that person in the lab group that was clueless (not that that's bad because it helps the others because they have to explain it to that person and teaching helps reinforce the knowledge) but it turned out that I was more on top of the extrinsics (they didn't know innervations or functions) and then they were able to sort out the intrinsics better than me and taught that to me along with the handy dandy UP RT thing and then we all left with a better understanding than when we went in 👍. Now Anatomy is back to being my favorite class 😀. Does your anatomy group meet outside of lab time? If not, I'd recommend bringing it up to them because that is the most helpful thing for me.

Now memorizing the origins and insertions is not my strong suit, but most of the time at least one is pretty obvious, like the deltoid and the deltoid tuberosity, the supraspinatus and the supraspinous fossa, then all the flexors originate form the medial epicondyle of the humerus and all the extensors from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and then their name is usually an indication of their insertion- deep digital flexor goes to the digits, Extensor Carpi radialis, goes to the carpus. I mean you won't get them all using that trick, but there probably won't be that many and you should at least get some of them. I think with Anatomy everyone has a weak spot and no one will be able to remember everything. For me, I can ID the muscles on the cadaver really well and it takes little effort for me to remember the names of the muscles, but I have a hard time with origins, insertions, and function. I made an excel spreadsheet with all the muscles that we need to know on the thoracic limb (your list might be slightly different but it'd be a starting point), if you'd like me to send it to you, just message me your email address and I'll email it to you. It has separate columns for muscle, origin, insertion, function, innervation, and I added a best view column to to help me with if it's on the medial or lateral side. It's nice because you can sort by whatever you want, like if you wanna know all the muscles innervated by a given nerve, just sort by innervation, if you want to know all the muscles seen best on a given view, sort by view, etc. When I was studying I was just like I wanna see all the muscles grouped by this and there's no way to get that unless you make a spreadsheet. It really helped me, plus it took the pages and pages of notes and made it two, which helps me focus because it's a lot less daunting to learn 2 pages than 20-30, even if it's the same info, at least for me 🙂, part of the reason I have always written really small, if I just have 10 pages of notes, I feel better than if I had 30-40 written bigger.

You can do it, though, it'll be OK. 👍

Since we're talking about studying, memorizing, etc., I may have something that can help if anyone's interested. My awesome boyfriend programmed me a study tool specifically made for structures. He first made it for me back when I took a mammalogy course in undergrad, but now he's updated it in preparation for me taking anatomy. I can say first-hand that it's very helpful for studying, and I haven't found any tools similar to it. You take your own pictures of the structures (or get them online if you want, but I'd imagine it's better looking at your own specimen), load them into the program, mark the things you want to memorize, and then test yourself. Here's a screenshot:

If there's any interest, I'll ask him to post it online so anyone can download it.

P.S. Did I mention my boyfriend is awesome? 😀

I'd be interested for my repro class! 😀

Yep. I did this too. It works good for arterial supply and innervations too.

I'm happy that I finally have a locker!

Also, I missed classes and lab yesterday as I felt like death, but easily made up the lab today with another section. First test is a week from tomorrow!

About to cry over molecular biology. I sort of just skimmed through similar classes in UG and never learned much, and now I'm paying for it. :scared:
Exam tomorrow and not even CLOSE to prepared. The first week of financial aid woes really effed up this class. Ultimately I let it I guess, but it's still upsetting. Then it's on to learning both limbs by our anatomy exam Wednesday. Hoping to pull that off with only 3 days of studying

Had an awesome day at vet school today 😀. It was anatomy day and at lunch had a surgery club wetlab where I learned to do 1 and 2 handed surgical ties. I didn't quite get the 1 handed, but I got the 2 handed 👍. Plus today we got out at 2 instead of 3 because it was the other groups day to have lab in the afternoon. Trying to study Histology now, but keep getting distracted. Heading back to study more now. Was looking ahead at the schedule and things start getting hectic soon. Excited that cell bio is almost halfway over though, that will free up some time to study other stuff and we'll actually have some days where we're only in class for 5 hours instead of 6 🙂. I looked ahead because I was scared that I had read somewhere that when cells ended it would leave more time for pathology, but it doesn't look like that's the case. Path free days are the best 😀. Path is a very interesting and important class, but that doesn't mean I like it! I feel like we need an intro class with all the terms and stuff so we can actually understand when the professor lectures. It's rough 🙁. I've heard from some of the firsties that the second years are struggling too, which somehow gives me comfort 🙂.

Back to studying.

Look sort of like http://www.purposegames.com/ in design. 🙂

I've never seen that before! It's very close, but I would say that the advantage that Derek's game has (as far as I can tell) is that you actually type in the answer instead of it giving it to you and you clicking it. That way you actually have to remember the word yourself. I couldn't find a mode like that on purposegames, but correct me if I'm wrong! I guess another advantage would be the ability to study even if you don't have internet.

Also I should add that you have to remember how to spell the word correctly. It works great if spelling counts in your class (like it always has for mine).

Angels sang in our class when the professor said that as long as the spelling was close enough, it was good. First anatomy class ever where that's been the case. 😍

First exam tomorrow...ANATOMY!!! :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

And I honestly don't know how much more my brain can take of muscles...

Our professors said as long as they can tell/figure what it is that you tried to write, it is okay.

You got this! Use your reasoning skills if you aren't sure. You will do awesome! 👍😀

I've been doing so well when it comes to eating healthy, but the stress of this exam I'm going to fail just picked up my phone and ordered me a pizza. :ninja:

FINALLY!!! Its About Darn Time!

Outside waiting for my molecular bio exam to start :scared:
I'm freakin out man! This could possibly be my worst class grade of vet school. And yes, I am confidently making that prediction the 3rd week of school. I despise this shiz out of this shiz. I truly know nothing 😱

You can do it!!! Go kick that test's arse!!!!

Good to know I'm not the only slacker of c/o 2016. Hahaha. About to go out for $.75 beers...definitely have my priorities straight.

don't forget orca, next week we're drinking our sorrow away with $7 well pitchers.....

Well..I mean, if you write semitenonemeus and meant semitendinosus, I don't think that will fly.

When grading some papers as a teaching assistant for an Intro to Animal Science class I almost wet myself from laughing so hard when the answer to a question about the liver was:

Not only was it just wrong, the spelling is hilarious

Emiloo: KICK THAT TEST'S ARSE!!!! Good luck today!

Didn't have our teaching animal unit this morning, so I skipped 8AM physio and got to SLEEP IN. Best feeling ever, sitting in pajama pants with a cuddly ferret at 11AM on a weekday, haha 😍

Now to shower, run to the post office, and actually get to school, oi.
