Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been trying to search various threads, but can't find the answer to my question. Can someone at NCSU tell me approx how much $$ you had left over to live on after they took out your tuition/fees/etc for your first semester (i.e. the fin aid that was refunded to you for your living expenses/etc)?

To the people at OSU:
Seems like there's a lot of talk about grades and scores at your school.
We really don't talk about our grades or the exam once we are done with it. Some of us might say, "well that sucked", but I have yet to hear anyone boast about their scores (and trust me, there are some nice high scores to be boasted about). We are all super supportive and help classmates that didn't do so well that they can do tons better on the next exam. I think if I overheard classmates talking about grades, I would just try to not associated with them (might be hard to do at smaller schools).
So, this is what the second years told us to do at orientation- maybe you can kindly say to people that ask/talk about grades, "I don't like to talk about that🙂". End of story.

PSILT: I actually haven't heard anyone talk about grades (except for my friends in random conversations. It just comes up sometimes.) Our test averages get posted online, though, so it's easy to compare yourself to others.

My comment was going off of Squirrels'.
But, anyways, I know it's hard not to compare yourself. There are times where you will be below, close, and way above. Hang in there, sounds like you are doing great🙂. I say keep up the good work!

This is going to sound really stupid, but I'm feeling inadequate. I'm doing okay in all of my classes, but I'm consistently below the class average (I guess it doesn't mean much when I get an 89 and the average is a 92, but still...). I'm used to being the smart one, and this is really killing me right now. My friends are getting like 99-100% on every test, and I'm just not there. *sigh* Just something to get used to, I guess...

Make new friends.

But seriously. There will come a time when you do something well and they kinda suck at it. In the meantime, try not to compare yourself to other people so much. Stop talking about grades with friends - it can make things tense.

I was referring more to how the grades get posted online as well. I wish they weren't, but I know I'd be upset if they weren't. Just wanna do above average in something.

I'm in the boat of people who cannot memorize stuff worth a damn. I look at things 5-6 times before tests, including studying with others and reading notes and not just ppts, and I get okay grades. I have a friend who crams the night before and aces her classes (she has a 4.0). I know this because she watches marathons of tv and will straight up not know things that are pretty basic until the night before tests, plus she will straight up tell you her study routine if you ask. Normally I would not believe someone who says they don't study, but with her, I do, and I certainly do compare myself to her even though I try my hardest not to.

My husband keeps telling me that it will be better in clinics because different people will shine than who are doing well now, and I sure hope that is true. It was encouraging when one of my favorite vets told my class that your ability to be a good vet is not limited by what you know, no matter how much you do or don't remember by the time you get to clinics. I guess we will find out, but in the meantime, don't stress about grades. When people say things or if you see averages online, be happy for the other people and then remember you are also going to be a wonderful vet!!

Just remember that there are people that are doing much worse than you are. 🙁

I'm personally finding it very difficult to hear people complaining about getting a B when I'm really really studying my butt off trying my hardest, and being lucky to get a C in some classes.

I know it sucks being below the average, but you are still on the high end of the bell-curve. 🙂

We have had one class begin and end, and one person straight up failed the class. I'm not sure how other schools handle this, but at LSU, you get an F and you're gone. You can appeal for next year, but that is far from a 'guaranteed spot' for the following class. So that's daunting.

So be very very content with your high B average! 🙂 You'll do fine, you'll be a great vet. And you have wonderful, supportive (internet) friends. Haha.

Side rant: LSU's undergrad classes have a 10-point grading scale, and all students/faculty have unanimously decided that they want a +/- system (having a A+, A, A-, then B+, etc; in case you're not familiar). We are a separate entity, yet we share a dean with them, so we will be required to change if they change.....but we have an 8-point grading scale. And would keep the 8-point. 🙁 It makes me super sad. I feel like an 8-point scale is really narrow as it is...and there is no need to further restrict the scale so when you just barely squeak by with a C, everyone will know you pretty much had a D.

I dunno. Just seems lame. I had 10-point scale in undergrad, so this 8-point is scary enough with +/- to go with it. 🙁

Do you think its too much to ask for the anatomy professor and the physiology professor to coordinate on terms used? They both have taught here for many years, and I know they know each other. While its not anything too confusing, it just is annoying to be told not to call the heart valves semilunar or mitral or tricuspid in anatomy and then have them constantly referred to that in physiology...

I am used to being well above the average, I am currently in the bottom third of my class... 😉

You are still getting good grades, hell an 89 is awesome! Go celebrate that grade and don't worry about what anyone else is doing. Do your best, be sure that you understand the material (you aren't in vet school to pass exams, yes it is part of it, you need to be able to comprehend the material and use it as a vet later on, if you have a 100% on the exam but can't put the material into context as a vet, it means jack ****.) Just be sure that you are doing your best and that you will be able to recall the material 3, 4, 5 months or even 3 years in the future. 🙂

I'm really frustrated with anatomy right now... we had so much guidance in materials for the first two exams, and now the one Monday (on thorax, abdomen, pelvic cavity and some cumulative), I feel like we just got dropped off a cliff with nothing. I'm spending more time trying to find good materials to study with and decipher the book than actually studying. 🙁 Just so frustrating.

We have an 8-pt grading scale, too - grr! Anything in the 90s should be an A, dammit.

Abber, totally did not mean to offend you or anyone else. I'm so sorry if you took if that way. I think I would be in your position if I were attending LSU. I think my point in bringing up numbers was to clarify that everyone in my class is finding the tests relatively easy, and I'm not feeling that way.

Totally agree. Arg!!!

Whoopsie! You didn't offend! I was just trying to have you see the positive. 🙂 I'm sorry if I came off as that way, you guys! Wasn't being butt-hurt. lol.

I had dead-brain from stupid biochem exam. Haha. Maybe I should review these things before I post them. I feel like my last few things have been taken by others not how I meant them to be taken.

Turns out vet school is hard. 🙁 And scatters your brain particles. All over your anatomy binder. And biochem binder. And histology binder........Bleh!

It really just depends on how much you take out for loans. I took out more than I needed for tuition and fees. I have like $16k for the entire year (that means $8k a semester). I could have taken out a little more, but I don't need it (you really don't want to borrow more than you have to). I got lucky and my husband ended up with a job, so hopefully I can use most of that for next year.

Those points exactly.

Told NOT to call them by those names? Pretty sure that's all I've heard them called in cardio class...

I actually do think when learning anatomy it's more beneficial to think of them as right AV, left AV, pulmonic and aortic. Honestly I hate the other names for them because they're kind of arbitrary.

I love anatomy, but it needs to just stop right now. In the last week we have covered the bones, muscles, nerves of the head, plus all the teeth and tongue stuff. It is crazy and we are so far behind in lab. Plus we have a ton of other stuff going on. I MUST do Histo and Clin path soon and I have a cell final next week that I haven't even started studying for :scared:

Hi guys, I'm still alive. =)

First month of school has gone pretty well, although we've only had a couple of exams so far (no worries; we have 6 in the next three weeks, so we're catching up 😉 ).

Hubby moved in, my class is pretty awesome, and we got a puppy. <3

Anyway, sorry to lose touch with y'all so fast! I'm not as good at adjusting as y'all are, I guess.

Yeah, he said he didn't care about what they were called in other classes, but that they would be right and left AV, and pulmonary and aortic valves in his class.

Anyone ever study for only 3 hours and pass molecular bio? :scared:

Yet another public health speaker talking about missing private practice... 🙄

Any other 2016ers planning on going to NAVC in the spring? Just finished my registration! 😀

What's NAVC?

The one in Orlando?

It's only about 2 hours away, so I'm thinking about it. My cousin is in vet tech school and they are all going, so maybe I'll meet up with her... And you! 😀

Anyone going to the symposium at LSU??? :hello:

I just entered a contest to win a free trip to it. Hope I get it!

A lot of the wetlabs look like they're for practicing vets...is there anything specifically for students? Or would I be better off sticking to SAVMA (I can only leave OH for 30 days the whole first year so I have to be selective in what I go to)?

If I dare to dream, my dreams really will come true!

T-minus 2 hours until my third class of vet school is completed!! :soexcited:
Hope I pass this exam :scared:

Feeling better about Anatomy today 🙂. One of the TAs came over and spent like 20 minutes with our group going over the stuff we had found and when we actually pointed it all out to her we realized we really were catching onto what we were doing 👍. Now to catch up on Histo. And luckilly when my Epi group got together today they had all come on board with my ideas 😎. So, only about 5 million things left to do now lol. I always have one day of the week (either Wednesday or Thursday) where I freak out and feel I'll never survive and then I come up with a plan and it's all good 🙂. Now to just stick to the plan!

I will be trying to go at least one day. Emiloo, I expect to meet you - I'll even bribe you with alcohol.

Sweeeeeet!

That was a posting fail.

Equine colic surgery assist + interesting bovine cardio case + equine ultrasound wet lab = most excited first year student. In history.

These were all within 2 days of each other. I love vet school so, so much!

Not a 2016er, but I'll see you there! (My loving parents are subsidizing the costs for me to go, since it's been ages since I've actually had a vacation and they go to Cuba every year.)

So if you're wondering how my molecular bio final went today...

Me, me, me! 🙂 Since I go to LSU and all. 😀

Also, are there any equine folks that are thinking of going to the TAMU SCAAEP wetlab in January?!

I'd like to depending on costs and whether I'm invited. usually only 8 third years get to go and I'm ranked #9 right now based off activity points :-/
and there's a good chance ill be road tripping to scavma symposium 🙂

So first off, I'm gonna try to make it to LSU this year for the symposium. It's not too far away from CS...

AND for those of you in SCAAEP, COME TO THE TAMU EP WETLAB!!!!! Just do it! I'll definitely be there. My roomie is one of the wetlab coordinators and they are planning some pretty awesome things...just saying 😉

We should all get together one night at the symposium. 😀.
We'll plan something as it gets closer.

Thank you for the info, Orca. That is SUPER helpful for me! Trying to plan early.

Anyone?? 😀

NAVC is more for practicing vets. But I'm sure you can learn a lot there. Not sure about the wetlabs

Thanks dyachei! I think I'll stick with SAVMA this year and maybe check out NAVC next year when I can leave Ohio more freely.

That being said, it is right next to the theme park capital of the US. So you could go to Wizarding World of Harry Potter (islands of adventure) one day and Disney the next and still go to a few lectures.

So if you're wondering how my molecular bio final went today...

So the first time I saw this, the first image loaded, and the second didn't, leaving a blank white space... which seemed equally fitting, haha.

I'm def going to SAVMA, too! Working on funding with the school right now. I love conferences. 😍
