Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey squirrels--did you get a lenovo? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere. If you did...did you get the lenovo convertible (between tablet and laptop)? I don't want a straight tablet, but I think I would consider getting a tablet that can be used as a laptop as well.

Thoughts, anyone else as well?

I'm considering this as well. But I also kind of want a Mac. But going with a tablet PC would allow me to use OneNote better. My problem is, I really just don't really like the look/feel of them. My mom kind of has one and I feel like the top half is really flimsy and will break off any day now. Also, I don't know if I'll end up liking how writing on a tablet turns out since I've never had one.

Soooo, I have a 2/3 chance of starting school this fall. I won't have an answer anywhere from tomorrow until July 3rd. School (if I'm starting in August) is in 53 days from today. And it's on an island. Meaning I have to organize my life and figure out how to pack it in 2 suitcases, all the while mentally preparing myself for 4 years of vet school and working to survive. Ouch. Give me answers, SGU, and give them to me NOW. 😡

Boooo! 😡

I got an ASUS transformer and I really like it! It is pretty quick and you can order a docking station with keyboard that extends the battery life and makes it into more of a netbook. It does have a scroll pad, but the part I don't like is that I haven't figured out yet how to turn the touchpad off and it gets in the way when I'm typing and I end up typing along and then it jumps back to some other point because my hand hit the touchpad. I'm planning on having a laptop at my apartment and then using the tablet in class. It opens powerpoints and word documents and you can view and add notes to them and then save them and email them to yourself to print out or view on the laptop. I got a case that I'm pretty happy with for mine that is for both the docking station and tablet and I feel the tablet has a secure attachment to the tablet. Overall I'm happy with it and can't wait to try it out in class.

That stinks. Doesn't SGU realize that their waiting to the last minute makes people have to rush and get ready, which is no way to prepare for vet school. Wish they'd just let you know you're in already! Good luck.

ASUS? 😕 <----- dummy when it comes to netbook/iPad/tablet-y schtuff.

Love the new avatar

Haha literally 🤣 for about 10 minutes when I saw it. It had to be done.

JMJ - that is so long!!!! They better tell you SOON!!!!!

:scared: thank GOD for w/d.

One way we know I'm blonde: I read this and mentally agreed that w/d is a good food, but wondered why everyone was so excited about it, and especially what it had to do with wearing the same shirt every day.

Glad I figured that out. 😳

Ok, I can't leave you hangin out there like that... I thought the same thing :whoa:

when I see W/D I always think of the food, not washer/dryer too.

Thank you, Emiloo and Squirrels and DVMDream for making me feel like less of a weirdo. 🙂

It's Hill's w/d, a high fiber food good for colitis, weight loss, and/or those dogs who just need a little more fiber in their diets (for anal gland problems or whatever).

ohhh the dog food! I thought you were talking people food :smack:

We have the 4th off. Now that's a schedule I could used to- go to class Monday & Tuesday, off Wednesday, then class Thursday & Friday, then the weekend? Hell yeah! 😎

This used to be my work schedule. It was kind of wonderful. I miss it greatly.

I am so excited for all you guys starting soon!! Lots of luck for this year! :luck:

So many instances of apartment hunting over the years, and so w/d = washer/dryer. I find it funny that people thought of the food.... we like never sell any of that stuff 😛

:scared: thank GOD for w/d.

YAY class of 2016!!!!!!!

I start the 20th of August and have orientation from the 15th to the 17th. Ours mainly involves a lot of speeches and the usual intro/group stuff. Though apparently there's a dinner at the end of it or something like that...

Believe it or not, I'm taking a summer workshop and moving up this weekend! Sooo excited!!!

People have been top secret about our orientation. All I know is some days we are inside and some days we are outside and should wear SPF and bug repellent. And our "nifty" orientation shirt EVERYDAY. Thank dog I have my own w/d

I know, RIGHT! Same shirt... every day... in August.... Am I going to be running a single-garment "load" of laundry every night for a whole week?

My office manager's 3 dogs are on it, and so are a bunch of clients' cats... we go through a fair amount.

It'd be really interesting to see clinic to clinic comparisons of which foods are used a lot/a little/never. I sometimes look at the neglected bag of g/d and wonder if it'd be such a reject somewhere else.

That would be a really interesting survey to make. I have a feeling that the big ones (i/d, z/d, r/d, etc) probably sell equally well from clinic to clinic, but that sales of others vary depending on vet preference.
One that I've wondered about -- anyone else's clinic jumping on the y/d bandwagon like mine is?

My vet clinic was so excited when they heard about y/d but they have no clients willing to try it yet. I think the issues are cost and multiple cat households.

Yes we have used y/d with success. It is really nice for owners who can't or have a difficult time medicating their pet.

I think we have like 3 people on it currently.
One jumped on to it cause her cat is spawn of the devil so she can't be pilled or really be touched, so this actually has been the best option for her. And she lives only in their basement so they don't have to worry about her eating any of the other cats' food.

I'm totally curious to see y/d in action, but none of my vets will use it despite clients wanting to try it. No clue why.

never heard of r/d or y/d. The emergency clinic I worked at was big on A/D and I/D and also carried C/D, G/D and W/D. I think that was all we had. We used and sold a lot of A/D, I/D, and C/D. One of the vet's dogs was on W/D and sometimes we used G/D. I know of Z/D although I don't use it, because I have a dog with really bad allergies.

E/N, I/D, A/D, Z/D, W/D and SO are our biggest sellers (among Hill's and Royal Canin). We keep R/D on hand and sell T/D by the 4lb bag with our recommendation being mostly to use it as treats rather than a straight diet. =)

We've also got a ton of other ones but we don't use them enough for me to really be familiar with them.

Do your hospitals sell other types too or just hills? We sell PVD, Hills, RC, and the Kangaroo/Oat one (Iams, I think?). We have a TON of clients, so lots of different foods. Our top sellers are OM (typical America 😳 ), SO, DH, EN, and UR. Our vets like Purina 🙂

This thread is taking all sorts of weird turns. Bugs-->veterinary therapeutic diets. Go figure. 😉

Hill's and Royal Canin for our diets. =)

How's everyone's schedules looking for next year?

We didn't get our "official" schedule yet (not signed up for classes yet, BOO!), but we're about 8-5 most days, with exam blocks 2 days. We only have anatomy + lab twice a week, which is pretty odd to me, but I guess they know what they're doing 🙂

My schedule is a PITA! There is not ONE SINGLE WEEK where things are the same... how in the world am I supposed to keep up with all that? 😡 Even when the classes are the same, they are on different days or in different rooms... dear God I'm gonna miss so much shiz

First 4 weeks is
Histo/lab
Molecular bio (vomit!)
Anatomy Lab
Professional Development

Next 4 weeks is
Histo, Molec bio, and Anatomy still
Endocrinology/lab
Radiology
Embryology/lab
Immunology
Career Opt

Weeks 9-12 consist of
Embryology, Immunology, Endocrinology, Anatomy and career opt still
Opthalmology/lab

Week 14 -18 adds in
Neurology
Parasitology
Radiology Lab

:scared:😱:scared:😱

Here's my schedule for the fall:

Gross Anatomy
Histology
Developmental Biology
Biochemistry
Intro to Clinical Veterinary Medicine I (ICVM I)

I can also take Intro to Wildlife Medicine as an elective which I'm considering, since I've always kind of been interested in that area.

From what I remember hearing at interviews, the Official official schedule won't be finalized until just before classes start (like exam dates and such). And I think it goes something like: 8-10, break, 10:15-1, lunch, 2-5.

What do you mean exam block 2 days????

Monday and Thursday afternoons are blocked off (no lectures) in case of exams. If no exams...I guess we get out at 1!!

Here's mine:

Gross Anatomy
Microscopic Anatomy
Clinical Correlates
Vet Immunology
Vet Behavior Med
Physiology I

I'm also taking a summer anatomy workshop to kinda give me a headstart since my undergrad didn't offer animal anatomy while I was there.

Dear c/o 2016,

It's totally cute that you are excited, but stop trying to hurry summer along. Some of us are enjoying it still.

Kthx.

~2015er

I'm with you on that one. In no way am I in a rush to start the next four years. :scared:

It's not as bad as it seems. You will learn to be flexible for the first semester, but second semester is a little bit better.

The type A in me is freaking me out. The badiblet of type B in me thinks it will be kind of fun.

WSU's line-up is:

Animals, Society and Vets
Vet Microscopic Anatomy
Vet Anatomy I
Vet Cell Physiology
Animal Handling & Agricultural Animal Orientation
Principles of Surgery
Intro to Clinics

I'm considering equine colic team as my elective because it sounds pretty hands-on (and isn't a huge time commitment). I will say I am terrified to transition to touching so few live animals a day after working in hospitals/zoos/barns for over a decade. Especially after reading the 'Class of 2015, How ya doing' thread. Yikes!

We also have some kind of crazy schedule of certain classes, certain days, certain weeks (which sounds completely insane and also makes me fairly certain I'm just going to miss some classes). Luckily I was told by a second year that they just herd us around like cattle from class to class so just follow the crowd.

I know I will laugh at my own naivety next year for saying this, but I am SO EXCITED!!

I think ours is similar. I keep popping in to the calendar to see if they've posted our daily schedules yet, but nothing so far.

We have so many classes though! x.x

Anatomy
Physiology
Med. Biochem
Histology
Immunology
Large animal husbandry
Ethology
Professional foundations

... And those are the core classes. x.x Embryology and a domestication course are offered as electives on top of that.

It's pretty sick how excited I am though. I can't wait to be back in Blacksburg - that's pretty much a given - but I am disgustingly excited about pulling my new school supplies together and setting up my study den and whatnot... I know, I'm broken or something.

Yep, wrote that on here about a week ago. My BF got me a $100 gift card to Staples as one of my birthday presents and it was by far my favorite present (not bc the other gifts sucked, but because I'm sick like that). I wish they still made cool trapper keepers :meanie:
I can't WAIT for school supplies! I'm the person that buys everything, sets it up on my desk and in my bag, and then stare at it and rearrange it for a while. I'll just keep opening my bag and finding things as if I'm practicing or something :smack:... yep... sick! 😱
This should have probably gone into the confession thread because its rather strange

I totally understand you.

I discovered Staples' arc notebook system and am so jazzed. If I were a sane and rational human being I would be humiliated - but I'm not, so I'm not.

Wait... what's Staples arc notebook system!?!? 😱

Edit: Just looked it up :zip:😍😀😍😀
