Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Orientation week is over for VMRCVM finally. It was a bit overwhelming at first, and I was really nervous about making new friends and trying to become acquainted with so many people (our class is 125-127...people keep giving me different answers) was filling me with anxiety I think. But going to the social events in the evening really helped me meet a lot of different people and have fun. 🙂

Classes start next week! I think I'm ready...I think.

Eh, I wore contacts in anatomy lab. No issues yet 🙂
I plan to do this too. Don't even have glasses to wear so.....I'm kinda SOL 😉
We should have an SDN study session....
YES! It might be EPIC.......or fail miserably

Had informal orientation today at Tufts & attended the Alpha Psi party this evening. There are sooo many names floating around in my head right now. Dog wash tomorrow, formal orientation Monday and Physiological Chem. Tuesday. I can't believe it's here. EEEEK😱

Just spent 3 hours monitoring a premie foal in the ICU. Very tired, but glad I got to do it!

It could end up being an Epic Fail. I would probably be the one to go off on random tangents..... Oh, look something shiny!!

I could see this being a huge success or a downright train wreck. Either way, I'd bet it would be awesome. 😀

Washed my cell phone this morning 👎. Trying to dry it in a bowl of white rice, internet says that will work, I hope the internet is right.

I always heard to keep it in rice for a few days and do not turn it on during that time at all.

👍 Don't touch the phone for a few days. It should work. Your phone might not completely recover, but it will work.

Yep, keep it turned off and don't power on until it's completely dry.

I wouldn't do this on a valuable smartphone, but when I had my old school razr, it survived 5 years after being dropped in the toilet a couple times (then subsequently doused with alcohol), and even washed through a few complete cycles in the washer. Every time, I just wrapped it up in a bath towel, and made it go through the dryer for a full cycle. Then voila, no matter how crapped out it was before, it would magically start working again as soon as it came out.

Awesome, thanks guys. It's a "new" phone, but is old style flip open nothing fancy phone. So, hopefully it comes through OK. I went cheap with the phone and it doesn't even text, so hopefully it comes out unscathed.

If you can remove the battery, do that too. It dries faster that way

Classes start tomorrow. :scared:
Good luck!! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions at all! :luck:

The Food Animal Club's back to school BBQ is definitely worth going to whenever they have it - usually the first day or two. Lots of delicious food grilled by senior clinicians!!! 😀

Yep! I am going to that tomorrow to get some delicious food and check out all of the clubs. And thanks!

BB and I had our blue coat ceremony tonight! $h*t just got real!

Just about everybody's rotations start tomorrow, except for mine. Mine starts Tuesday. I'm going to feel so left out!

Heading into our fourth week here tomorrow (or should I say today since it is 1AM).

I can't believe we have already been here for this long.. We have this week and next week in class, then we get one week off and then we have one really large exam over these first 5 weeks... :scared:

Really nervous about it, but if the questions are anything like what they have posted as review on-line I should be ok... Just need to get those muscles down.

First day of classes tomorrow!! Kind of excited but I'm not used to getting up early especially since I'm been going to bed at around 5 AM the past several nights.

Good luck to everyone starting classes tomorrow! 😀👍

It's gonna be fun times!

👍 same here. I have my first anatomy exam in like 2 weeks and the muscles are totally killing me right now...

We have ours Thursday. On the entire thoracic limb. Muscles, origins, insertions, actions, arteries, arterial and vein supply, nerve innervations, etc. :scared:
Week two is perfect timing for anatomy exams :scared:

Haha yep! Mine will be on the thoracic limb, with artieres and veins and nerves, and the pelvic limb as well. Oh joy...

Why don't you start tomorrow? I saw that on FB?

I have Primary Care (here, not Chicago) and it's Tuesday through Saturday. It also starts at 1pm on Tuesday and "variable" times on the other days.

I feel like everyone understands what's going on...except me!

They just have us the definition of gene and a bunch of other basic genetic terms....

I should not have come today.... So far a pointless day. :lame:
I WISH that would happen in my classes! We have 5 instructional periods (8 weeks each) in our first year, and we are technically considered VM2's after period 4. So basically, we are cramming as much as possible into those 8 week periods...ugh...:scared:

Our program is meant to be a 5 year program, next year we are considered third years because we are in the GEP course, we will have covered all of anaomy and cell biology in the first 5 weeks here. The basics of genetics ended in the first 6 minutes, she has moved on....

This starts my first full week of classes, although it feels like its been more like several weeks.

Our schedule changes every day, but we have bacteriology at 8 am a lot. And the professor talks in a monotone voice and turns down the lights. The only thing that keeps me awake is the temperature... Its freezing in this room!

Sent from my DROID RAZR using SDN Mobile

First day today. It was okay. The room that we spend class in from 8-12 is really hot, so I was really uncomfortable all morning. We got our bone boxes in anatomy. I got hung up on determining right bones from left bones of the front limb, and was then told we will never be asked to differentiate between the two. Oh well. At least I know it now..
My big is lending me her guide to the dissection of the dog, which is awesome because the bookstore is out of it, and is also out of the course pack for anatomy so I can't get the reading done...🙄
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. I'm starting to feel homesick today, too

Lucky. We had to be able to tell right from left while the stupid bone was in a sock so you couldn't even see it. I was not impressed. When, in practice, am I going to be handed a leg and have to be able to tell which leg it is without having the rest of the (grievously injured) patient in front of me??

We have to know L and R also.

I never got my final grade for animal nutrition. I sent my transcript, but have no idea what I got in the class... hmmm.

We will need to know right from left too, but I had to know that for undergrad anatomy as well. I don't think they will be that mean and stick the bone in a sock... I always thought that during undergrad anatomy.... Why do I need to be able to figure out which bone this is? It will either be attached to my patient or if it is not hopefully the other limb will be.

Survived my first day! I'm tired but things went ok. Our dissection dog was a bit on the chunky side but we managed to get everything done that we needed to. One poor group spent a good portion of the lab just cutting through the fat on their dog. I did not envy them at all.

ETA- I forgot the best part: I got a new backpack with the school logo on it! I love it!

First day of class went well. I really liked anatomy and think I have a great group for it.
The rest of the day was a little uneventful. I totally spaced during Biochem since it was basically review of things learned in like 9th grade.

Now I'm just doing some reading for Anatomy and then going out for all you can eat wings and all you can drink beer.

Overall the day was great! Great lab group (didn't plan it before we went in) and straightforward lecturers. Win!

Plus today's Biochem prof had a cool Russian (?) accent. 😀

didn't think today was too bad, but i think it's going to build up very quickly...just trying to relax right now before things get tough.

anyone a true blood fan? just watched the season finale 😱

hahahaha

our group decided to all chip in for an additional copy of the evans guide....that way it can get all slimy and gross and we will have our own shiny copies!

That's smart. We kind of designated one person's book to be the gross book. Mainly because he had highlighted all the parts that had the instructions of where/when to dissect. He was way on top of things...unlike me.

i'm SO not on top of things. our group was like.....soooooo what now?

trying to catch up now....but it's so hard to get off my bed and to my desk where my books are!

My catching up has kind of failed. My mom keeps wanting to talk to me. And I wanted to take a nap but knew I should be doing this since I'm going to the wings thing. Clearly have my priorities straight..🙄

One week in, two days have been cancelled due to Isaac....two tests have been postponed. Yay for a great start to vet school! Haha.

Smart. I got lucky and my big handed me down an older edition of the book that had all the corrections in it already. So now I have one gross book that I keep in my locker and one nice, clean one at home. 😀
