Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh, you pre-meds and your dark anime...

By the way, is death note on Hulu or Netflix? If not, I'll be stuck watching FMA, Trigun, Bebop, and whatever I have in my private collection. Seems like a good way to spend the summer before med school 👍.

Loved FMA. Did you watch the remake: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood? Loved it even more than the original. Bebop also gets mad love.

but to your question--Yes. Deathnote is on Hulu. It's subbed though--I know some people prefer dubbed--dunno which you are. I watched one of my fav episodes of Deathnote yesterday on Hulu and was disappointed to find that they put a commercial in between one of my favorite scenes in the whole show. So theres that con.

Ravizzle--do not watch Episode 25 on Hulu UNLESS you hit the jackpot and are offered the chance to watch a 3 min trailer and skip the commercials!

Man, everyone keeps telling me to watch brotherhood, looks like I'm going to have to watch it now.

Normally, I prefer subbed, but after being in classes for so long, I got used to dubbed just for the convenience of it. I'll look into deathnote on Hulu.

TCOM doesn't have grade replacement?!

My grandfather just passed. It was NOT a shock he was very sick since 2010 and the 'medicine' that they do have in Haiti isn't great so it was expected but I be out for a week or so. I think I will be apply to get my app in time though.

Yeah, the TMDSAS is a completely different system then all the other MD (AMCAS) and DO (AACOMAS) school applications. They do things a bit different.

TCOM doesn't have grade replacement?!

Also, TMDSAS takes an A- and bumps it up to an A, a B- up to a B, a B+ down to a B, a C+ down to a C etc.

Safe travels. Not a shock but still a loss. Your app will be fine so focus on family now.

How many schools are ya'll applying to?
I'm thinking of applying to 10 (including my state MD school) - is that enough?

I am probably going to apply to around 20 with a mix of MD and DO. I am an Ohio resident soiI have lots of state MD schools

Just got my MCAT score back. Got a 26.
I have a 3.7 cgpa and a 3.7 sgpa

Will these stats be good enough to get into DO schools?

Yes. Average matriculants are 3.45/26.5, so your 3.7/26 is right around average or a bit above it. Apply early and broadly.

Awesome. Standardized tests have never been one of my strengths. Struggled getting my score up by 4 points after taking a class.

Welp. I guess it's time to stop lurking. MI resident.

3.25 | 3.26 | 34M (10/13/11)

Ideal schools: MSU, Touro-CA, and PCOM. Also, 3.26 GPA through 2 semesters in a master's program. I'm not sure if that hurts me or what. Searching SDN, opinions range from "not a big deal" to "consider seppuku". ECs are probably about average.

So weird I had MD schools email me ( OUWB and University of Missouri)
but no D.O. schools.

My gpa is on par 3.7 3.6 scigpa but my mcat was a 24 8/8/8.

and yes I am a urm.

Please get your stuff right, Brotherhood is the original story from the manga and much better than the first series. The dub for FMAB is really good though. Anyone else watch Toonami?

Count me in for this cycle! Good luck everyone!

sgpa: 3.35
cgpa: 3.4
MCAT: TBA

I think we should have a clothing thread for class of 2018 interviews.

Anyway, this is a concern mainly for the tall ladies.

For my mock interview with my uni. I am going to wear 2 inch pump heels because that is what they want but for my real interviews I am thinking about wearing flats or loafers with a small heel mainly because I am 6 ft tall and I will be more comfortable in the flats or loafers.

What do you girls think should I really use heels for my real interview?

Was accepted back October 2012 and was granted my deferment until fall 2018 to VCOM-CC. MCAT 23 GPA 3.52. Lots of extracurricular and working experience

So I now know that med schools randomly send letters to applicants because Harvard Medical School sent me a letter. I am thinking abt framing the letter and telling my children about how I could of went to Harvard, lol.

Whoo! Thank you darklabel for starting this thread- I just found it the other day and skimmed through it today.

cGPA: 3.46, sGPA about 3.1, member of Pre-Health Advising Committee, little research, shadowed an MD and DO, secretary of health-related organization on campus, Pre-Soma (just started in 2013 at my campus), held a few positions in my fraternity (Social Media Head, Education Chair), was on Interfraternal Council, lots of volunteering at soup kitchens, senor citizen homes, hospitals, local community centers, etc. MCAT in June.

Worst thing against me is being suspended for the Fall of 2013 from my school.. private school decided to drop that on me due to a few mistakes over the year that added up to them. I can still graduate on time however and I'm putting my best foot forwards. If anyone has any input on this at all I would greatly appreciate it.

Here's to the Class of 2018! Good luck to all!

@3Bamboo: That video was full of so much awesomeness

I would like some help narrowing down my DO school list.

Stats:

sgpa: 3.54
cgpa 3.32
MCAT: 27 (9/9/9)

Schools I am considering:

A.T. Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, MO
A.T. Still University, School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, AZ
Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University
Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine -Virginia Campus
Georgia Campus - Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Bradenton Campus
Lincoln Memorial University - DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine
Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Osteopathic Medicine

Thoughts? Add more? Take away some? I'm originally from the NE, been living in the SE for ~ 20 years.

My interview today went horrible.

For some reason I went blank and I could not get the words that I wanted to say out clear, I was in shock because all the practice I did plus I had several job interviews and my work as a CNA I thought was helping me but I blow it.

Plus I need a NEW PS, has anyone used Kaplan.

I would take out New Jeresey, Virginia, and both PCOM's since these schools are very regional biased. I would also add one or two newish schools just for safety net. LMU and ACOM are ones I'm considering adding to my school list.

Time for me to post in this thread. I always wanted to, but was hesitant till my mcat score came out yesterday.

GPA = 3.35 both
1st MCAT = 20(8,3,9)
2nd MCAT = 28(11,7,10)

The usual EC's and research

LOR's from a DO, 2 science professors, 1 English professor, and 1 pre-med committee letter

My school list (balded are my top choices; italicized are my safety net):

Western COM
TouroNV
Nova
TouroCA
LECOM erie
LECOM Bradenton
AT Still AZ
AT Still MO
DMU
AZCOM
LMU
ACOM
WVSOM
Campbell
KCUMB

I would love to cut down from 15 to 11, but don't want to jeopardize my chances in order to save $128

Thoughts?

3.15 cGPA

3.35 sGPA

mcat TBD in August...

Happy to join this thread and I hope everyone here is successful this cycle...

Good call! You most likely will get into Nova because they like high MCAT score...

I'm applying for 25 DO schools and praying to the gods that half of them send me secondaries without the MCAT (taking it early August). I figure if I get a 24-28, I won't be too far behind everybody in the application process.

sGPA-3.73 cGPA- 3.55
400 clinical hours working with pimple doctor
20 hours shadowing pathologists

That would be too many if you got a 25+ MCAT IMO....

Wow....They gave you a 6-year deferment!

I agree with Temp101. Applying to 25 DO schools is waste of money and time. Heck, there must be at least 10 schools that you shouldn't apply to because of their regional bias. In my opinion, apply to one school that isn't on top of your list just to have your application verified while you are waiting on your mcat score. Once your score comes in, add on the other schools.

A score of +25 (nothing below 6), which I'm sure you'll get, will do it.

I am taking a break this week to get myself sane again....I will start again on Monday until test date (August 2nd)...Will spend 25-30 hours/week doing practice problems until test date... 50% of time spent will be in VR...I figure out if I can get an 8 in VR, 25+ will be very much attainable....I just ordered the AAMC guide book.

But then I would lose all that precious time to fill out the secondary applications. I'd rather get them done and then submit the day after I take the MCAT.

from what I've heard, it shouldn't take you more than a day to fill out one secondary application. Assuming you end up filling 7, you will need to dedicate a week for them. One week will not affect your application progress significantly. However, being rejected for not having an MCAT score will.
