Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So many ii's! Gratz to all of y'all 😀

Some of these stats are through the roof. A lot of you all are aiming for MD with DO backup?

I want to be a doctor, I want to only apply once, and I don't particularly care at the moment where I go as long as I get accepted somewhere--I will make the best of things, wherever I go.

Plus I shadowed a DO and just had a great experience (n=1, but...). He had nothing but the best things to say about osteopathic medicine and it really showed in his way of treating patients...so I'm applying to both MD and DO schools and will see where I get in; if I get in multiple places where I go will be where I think I'll be happiest.

But that's just me. *shrugs*

I'm not calling anyone out, so don't get upset.

If the stats that are being posted are any indication of the trend, DO applicants are in a world of hurt a lot sooner than we thought.

What do you mean by that?

Remember, a lot of these people are using DO as a back up and will most likely drop any DO acceptances gained once they matriculate to an MD school. This will open spots for all of us who are competitive for DO, but not necessarily MD. So don't be disheartened looking at those with high stats getting II's.

Ooo, got it now. Yeah I am a weird applicant. I am applying to both DO and MD too. My GPA is very funky with DO because they cut out math and allow for grade replacement (which is a good thing for me) which puts me as a very good applicant for DO schools and a not so good one for MD. I am like the above applicant. I have shadowed a DO and she is an absolutely amazing physician and would love to go to the same medical school she went to. Yet another DO whom I have shadowed told me that I should go MD if I can, but being a DO is also an awesome decision.

My sGPA is a 3.25 for MD but a 4.0 for DO which is why its fairly odd.

Not upset, sorry if my post came across that way. 🙁 Just trying to explain because it's a valid question.

Double 🙁 because I wasn't trying to be snarky.

I'll have to look through the previous class threads and scan the stats, but my perception is that there are a lot more >3.75 applicants this year than I am used to seeing. Maybe I'm paying attention more this year because I am vested, but it's just my observation.

We are all expecting to see a jump in the stats of DO school applicants within the next 5 years, I was not expecting it so soon though.

Here's to hoping my 3.5s and 27 gets me in this year 👍

I honestly just want to be a doctor. I could care less about the letters behind my name. I shadowed 4 MDs and two DOs and I liked being with the DOs a lot better than the MDs. While that may have just been coincidence, I ended up applying to more DO schools than MDs.

Nah, there hasn't really been such a thread before (previous years were underdawg threads).

Also, previous years had underdawgs who were willing to come forward, share their stats and work together. This year, we have average applicants listing themselves as underdawgs when they really aren't.

I highly doubt we'll see a drastic leap in matriculant stats though they will steadily increase. Heck we probably won't hit the highest number of applicants this year either.

That's alright; I didn't realize I came off so stiff in my post. Glad we're back on good terms; I'm rooting for you! 🙂

It's very possible that's the case; med school admissions gets harder and harder every year it seems.

I think you will; don't let LECOM-B get you down! As I've been learning a lot the last year especially, life doesn't always proceed in a straight line/in a way that makes sense--however, a person usually ends up where they're meant to be eventually regardless. I think another school will take you and you'll be really happy there.

Haha our SDN threads suck for this 2018 class. I blame you and serenade. ::meanie: kidding

Back 5 I think you will get in somewhere, and probably net more than a few more interviews. It's early in the cycle still...

This. The school, the hospital, or the initials won't dictate who I am or the quality of my practice, only I can control that. End of the day, from what I see on this thread I will be proud to one day call every one of you my colleagues and peers. Rooting for everyone to have a successful cycle!

👍 Great post; agreed!

Saw some peeps getting invites from my state school and was feeling left out, well not anymore, hope to meet some of the SDN crew at RVU on 9/12!

Sweeet 👍 looks like you're having a great cycle.

Are you planning to go to all the interviews??

It's pretty good so far, great will come when I have an acceptance in hand. I plan on going to all of them until I get accepted somewhere. If that happens then I'll only go to my top 5, to really pick everyone apart and see where I fit. I'm sure you'll start firing things up soon as well. Thanks for staying on top of this thread! I think you're going a fantastic job of really creating a good, supportive class this year. So my hat is off to you good sir.

Thank you sir.

I just always wanted a way to concisely look at how each applicant does in a purely numbers fashion and how fellow SDN members do. I feel like doing this is also doing a service for our fellow members to see how others are doing with their stats and see what kind of IIs and acceptances are possible with whatever numbers.

Also, this keeps it anonymous since unlike MDapps and the like, no ECs or identifying information is presented.

Nova, dmu,cusom, lecom bradenton.

I didn't submit AACOMAS or AMCAS until the beginning of this month, but hoping that I'll only have to apply once.

AACOMAS:
3.4 ucGPA, 3.54 usGPA
3.58 gGPA (earned an MA in molecular biology)

AMCAS: not verified yet but surely lower than AACOMAS.

MCAT: 33 (9PS/10VR/14BS)

My LoRs are stellar and include one from a DO that graduated from Nova, whom I've informally shadowed (she's friends with my wife and has come over to let me watch her do OMT).

I'm a FL resident, and would prefer to stay instate, but since i received fee waivers, I applied to 20 MD and 8 DO.

What's killing me now is the wait for verification and release.

Relax. You WILL get interviewed at most of the places you applied.

P.S. Many schools will cream their pants seeing that 14 in bio.

I'm hoping. But, I did leave out of my previous post that when I was 21, I received Excluded status from the first university I attended for having a low GPA. Oddly enough, I failed General Bio three times back then. 😛

As a result of that, my AMCAS GPA is likely to be crap, no matter what. Just hoping they see the rest of my app.

It doesn't matter. I repeated Gen. Bio three times as well. My AMCAS GPA is 0.3 lower than my AACOMAS one. I'm not too worried about my retakes and "W's". Neither should you. Seems you have an upward trend. That's always a plus. Besides, your MCAT is amazing.

👍 Thanks. I'll remain positive. It's taken me about eight years to get here, a few more weeks won't hurt.

Accepted to LECOM-E. Third app cycle and I finally get the news I've been waiting so long for!

I realized all my excitement about applying for the cycle wore off tonight when I found myself here:

+pity+

🙂

Fuuuuuuuuuuu, must be nice getting an acceptance this early in the cycle, regardless of whether it's your first or last choice.

Bit of weight of the shoulders for sure. I know a lot of people are hesitant about the early deposit but for me the relief of knowing early and the ability to relax, be myself and have fun with the process a bit more is absolutely worth it.

Hehehe that was funny. The applying part gets old but your excitement is stoked with that first interview invite!

And then when you get your 5th it's a logistics nightmare :/
