It varies between schools I submitted my secondaries a month ago and I've only heard back from two schools so far.

congrats! when did you submit secondary, and about how long after did you hear back about interview? i am just getting really anxious...I have a 3.29sci/3.40cum/31mcat, so I am a pretty week candidate besides my mcat

We have similar GPA's but my mcat is a lot lower than yours. You are a very strong candidate.

I submitted my secondary way before receiving their invitation to fill out the application (my guess would be the first week of June). I didn't get the interview invite until the middle of August. I interviewed on Monday, three days ago, and was accepted today.

@everyone
If you had to choose between DMU and KCUMB, which would you pick and why?

Saw you were accepted at both. Congrats! This question will probably become my life if accepted to KCUMB in a couple weeks. What are you thinking so far?

I'm leaning toward DMU because the facilities are wayyyy better than KCUMB. Also, Des Moines was rated one of the best places for young people to live

I suppose I should join in and add!

c3.45, s3.5, MCAT 25 (6P/10V/9B).
Verified mid-August for MD, early-Sept for DO
I prewrote secondaries, so they were submitted almost as soon as I received them (most DO was med-Sept for complete).

ii's to: Drexel, PCOM-PA, and PNWU.

2 of those are just a few days before I leave for a 2 week, out-of-the-country vacation next month, so I can knock them out and then RELAX....and then hope for some good news when I get home!

Congrats to all those already accepted!!

@everyone
If you had to choose between DMU and KCUMB, which would you pick and why?

This is a pretty difficult question. I interviewed at DMU yesterday, and I was accepted at KCUMB a couple of days ago. If DMU accepts me, I would have to really do some thinking.

Here is my current breakdown of thoughts.

KCUMB pros:
- Genesis/integrated systems curriculum. This one factor is heavily weighted for me.
- Kansas City seems like a cooler, albeit less safe, city. The safety issue is less of a concern for me since I am from a dangerous place, and it will feel more like home.
- Research opportunities/fellowships
- Lots of on-campus study spaces with plenty of OMM tables
- More school-organized (versus only student organization-organized) community outreach endeavors

KCUMB cons:
- Small gym (but it's free...)
- Mandatory attendance
- Dress code of scrubs of business casual attire. I sort of envisioned myself showing up to class in gym clothes everyday so this is kind of a bummer...

DMU pros:
- The area around the school is really safe and quiet. Des Moines is probably a better area for those with kids.
- Surgical skills lab that is mandatory
- Emphasis on OMM
- Cheap cheap cost of living, even compared to Kansas City, another Midwest city
- Bigger gym with free personal training
- No traffic issues in Des Moines. Everything seems to be within a 15-minute drive.
- Multiple people mentioned this amazeballs farmer's market in downtown Des Moines on the weekends. I like the idea of eating well...
- All the buildings are linked through underground tunnels for those unbearable cold, snow days.
- The new dean of the COM is so, so charismatic. Completely mesmerizing. He's probably a fountain of rich information.

DMU cons:
- The non-integrated curriculum
- Relatively fewer study spaces on campus
- Campus has limited hours compared to KCUMB
- Class of 2012 had COMLEX I pass scores that were kind of iffy. No one really knows why this is.

Both schools have impressive match lists, updated/comparable facilities, dual degree options, comparable tuitions, large class sizes, plenty of walking-distance housing options, and happy students.

For those of you who are interested, DMU seems to be a big proponent of LGBT activities. They also promote other cultural diversity activities. Seems cool.

I think I am currently leaning towards KCUMB. My complaints for KCUMB are mostly superficial while some of my DMU concerns are more legitimate (i.e., curriculum, recent iffy board scores, limited access to OMM tables and stuff.)

ETA: I forgot to add that KCUMB uses a regular iPad for all their course packs and materials for OMS1 and OMS2 and an iPad mini for all the clinical resources. DMU has a PC laptop that they make their students buy, and when I asked the students, they said it doesn't really come preloaded with much. So for me, this is an extra plus for KCUMB. I hate PCs.

Quite a few people I'm happy to hear will be physicians here 🙂

Congratulations to everyone and those who are waiting for an Interview Invite, don't worry! It's still early in the DO cycle!

Thank you for posting this! I'm interviewing at KCUMB this Wednesday and really looking forward to it, but DMU is also on my list of top choices (no ii so far though). I'm interested to see if the cons are really that bad for KCUMB, as well as looking forward to seeing for myself why everyone comes back from interview day just blown away by how awesome the school is.

Thanks for keeping the list updated darklabel 😍

Darklabel! Put me down for an acceptance to ACOM!

In regards to gym I thought they were building a new one??

I don't know if it will be done in 4 years. The student tour guide told me the school is REALLY receptive to students wanting new equipment at the small gym. She said students have requested expensive equipment for the gym space, and the school has purchased them. So small gym space aside, I don't think the small gym is that big of a drawback.

KCUMB 😍😍😍😍
(lol)

Have fun at KCUMB!!!!! Ask lots of questions and enjoy the freebies they give you. (I love my KCUMB cup!)

If you get a chance, explore the Westport area. It's really cute! If you're staying at the Q, exploring Westport would be easy since it's where the Q is located.

Yeah I really really like kcumb.

The only big pro to DMU (for me, over kcumb) was that I already live in Des Moines; now I get to go on an adventure!

So have you decided where you will be going to attend?

So have you decided where you will be going to attend?

Not yet. I interviewed at a few places already, and I only heard back from KCUMB with an acceptance. I'll gladly attend KCUMB as it's my 2nd choice of all the places I visited, and I really loved my day there. I am pretty much done with my DO interviews. If PCOM extends an invite, I may visit, but I don't think I'll consider anywhere else for DO.

Thanks for the thorough comparison! 🙂

Just thought you should know that KCUMB's class of 2012 also experienced a comparable dip in their COMLEX I pass scores.

More importantly, both schools rebounded quite nicely the following year. 👍

@ everyone
Between AZCOM and LMU, which would you pick? And why are some of the advantages nd disadvantages of each?

AZCOM: Near Phoenix. branch of established school (MWU).

LMU: Newish school. In a town of 6,000 it's the largest "city" in the county. About an hour from Knoxville.

Other than that, I haven't been to either so I couldn't tell you whose facilities are better, etc.

Just from my superficial review, I'd go with AZCOM. Unless you've got your heart set on rural medicine (vs. underserved) then LMU would be better for you.

Plus, I've always preferred the desert climate over Appalachian.

Hmm. Right.
But facility wise, LMU is nicer :/
How tough is it to live in temperatures such as Arizona? Especially during the summer?

TIA
