MD & DO Co’22 ERAS Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So i heard from a lot of residents that the ring light and mic and all that they felt were a waste of money they ended up not using them and everything was fine
I didn’t bother with a mic, but I did get a $20 ring light that was life changing. Use a ring light.
ANyone's school give them guidance on how much of an impact sending in the supplemental now vs the 29 makes much of a difference? Especially for people just trying to tie down prelim spots
It’s the first year for that, so we don’t really know.
Could we really start getting offered interviews as early as next wednesday?
A ton of invites started going out from the day of release on in IM. I didn’t get my first invite for like 12 days after they went out and I was panicking as I watched the other MS4s on my sub-I getting a bunch.

Lol no! No way programs will be able to go through 100s or even 1000s of apps in less than 24 hours. That would be a red flag if that happens. Interviews will probably take a couple weeks before they start coming.

Probably specialty dependent, I'm only familiar with FM. I know one person who got 16 invites their first week and another who got 8 invites on the first day lol.

Also I watched this video where someone was advising to include clerkships under experiences? This was baffling to me. I certainly didn't That's all in MSPE and just expected, right? I didn't slip into another dimension?
Holy mother of insanity, don't list clerkships on your application as experiences.
IMG's should list US rotations and/or observerships as experiences, and should include an LOR
Don't list "honors" on any class or rotation as an award.
I go to a DO school our IM chair said he used the IM SEL letter format and used our mspe’s and IM rotation comments/performance to draft the letter. Is that useless too or should I send that in?
Yes, include it. Sounds helpful.

so peak neurotic moment. I was going to submit friday, but I got to wondering, how long does it take for USMLE and NBOME to send out scores out? Should I submit tmr so there is like 3 business days to give them time to transmit?

Me ready to submit....waiting on a LOR...no response from the writer....slowly dying....
You can submit even if you dont have the letter! If you have other letters you should be good as you can assign letters even after submission if this calms nerves a bit. Im sure your letter writer will upload soon we still have a week technically. Youll be fine

I was worried about this too last year. They both took less than 10 minutes. I think they say it “can” take several days if there is a problem, but in reality it doesn’t usually.

Question-I have several different personal statements, so do the programs see the name i gave the personal statement when i assign it to their program? Because I have 12 PS for my top 12 programs and the rest are all general (literally says General PS) so I don't want these programs that didn't get the special treatment to see "General PS" if that makes sense

No they don’t, it says so on eras only you can see the name

Nah it specifies they can't see what you name it, that's just for you to make sure you assign the correct ones. I have the same thing.

Can I submit my ERAS application now and certify/submit and submit my PS in the next couple of days?

You can submit now if you want! ERAS lets you assign letters after submission. Our school specifically tells us not to wait on late letters to submit, just in case that is helpful

My issue comes more with programs that specify "no more than x amount of letters". I have an extra letter in case this one falls through, but I don't want to submit 2 letters to a program and then be screwed because the letter I'm waiting on should carry way more weight than the backup one I have. I definitely won't be submitting late, though. If I don't have the letter by Monday I'll submit regardless and count my losses for those few programs that have a hard limit on number of LORs. Just hate this whole process. I'd appreciate a response to my email like "hey, no worries. I'm working on it and it should be ready soon!". I hate the complete silence and no response.

Ughhh thats frustrating! I think thats a good plan to submit monday regardless. Yeah i hate that too when they cant give you a courtesy email it takes literally 5 seconds to say “working on it will send in X days”

Panicking med-peds applicant here. Tried searching for this but the SDN search function continues to puzzle me.

When residency programs include "curriculum vitae" in the application requirements section alongside "ERAS common app" does that mean they want me to email them a pdf of my CV (the one I sent to letter writers) or are they just talking about ERAS?

Anyone has any idea how program specific letters like these help your chances? Wouldnt programs just think you sending this to everyone? Kinda like love letters .

Idk but i want them to know I want to go there i highlighted specific reasons of why I wanna go their based on unique aspects of their program. It certainly cant hurt and a lot of people from previous years told me after they sent letters of interest during the interview cycle they got invites immediately meaning that showing interest matters. As a DO applying to competitive academic IM programs with mostly if not all MDs I need to show them I wanna go there if I want a shot at an interview at all (already at a significant disadvantage as a DO and many of them will be donations but hey it is what it is). Obvi im applying broadly but still if it doesnt help it doesnt help but at least I did everything I could

I was advised by a resident to do this and explain why you want their program specifically. For instance, I want my choice program because it's close to my family and it has the kind of population I want to serve. I would guess its effectiveness is proportional to how much you care about that specific program's perks/things that attract you especially, if you let them know.

Gotcha, understood.

My interest in FM programs is mainly geographical and money is no object. Would it make sense just to apply to every program in the region? I just can't possibly see myself able to research 60 effectively. There are definitely some I like of course.

Just getting antsy over my program list. I figure in depths research doesn't matter until after interview stage.

That’s how I feel even with a shorter list haha

I would at least check the application requirements for every program though, I found that one of the programs lower on my list wants a separate “statement of interest” sent to them via a form on their website, in addition to ERAS…

so I did a summer semester for ochem back in undergrad, at a different school. Do I include this under the education places thing on ERAS?
I put every school where I have a transcript. For medical school, I had to include the 1 summer class i took at an online school and I included it again on ERAS.

Question: I played hockey in college and was captain of the team for 2 years. Where would this go my application? Its a huge part of my life and identity but it doesn't make sense to me to put it under any of the experience categories. Should I just leave it in "hobbies" even though it mean a lot more to me than that?
I was advised to put college sports in experiences. I put my one year of college tennis in experiences

That's what I originally hoped to do but it didn't seem to make sense in any of the three categories (ie volunteer, research, or work). Which one did you put yours under?

it would go under volunteer. volunteer is for extra curriculars that are not paid.

Regarding LORs... is there any difference between the following, in terms of what programs would recieve in your application?:
1. Certifying and submitting today/tomorrow with 2 LORs assigned, and assigning the 3rd once the author uploads it on Monday or Tuesday (still before the 29th)
or
2. Waiting until the 3rd author uploads theirs on Monday and Tuesday, THEN certifying and submitting with all 3 letters at once?

I want to submit my application soon, but I'm worried that if I add the last official letter afterwards early next week, it won't be received as part of my original app

As long as it’s before the 29th, aren’t those effectively the same?

I think it's the same....also curious to know as I would like to do this too.

Lol what… why would you do that… just put where you got your undergrad degree from
lol I guess for med school admission they made such a big deal about putting all of them I thought this was the same thing....good thing I havent submitted yet and can take it out! lol

I just put it under volunteer experience!

Ahh yes, I feel the panic starting to flow now.

Question: Is your application going to be any better on Friday (which I realize is now tomorrow, so this is kinda pointless)?
Answer: No, it's not. So just submit and be done.
Its very, very fast for USMLE/COMLEX
Do it as many times as you need amigo. I looked over my whole app and PS 7 times and the first 5 I kept finding small inconsistencies and formatting errors.
And you know how much we actually care about formatting errors? We don't.
But you're the one who needs to sleep for the next 3 weeks, so check it over as much as you'd like.

If you're a super nerd like me, I used to be able to fgure this out. Sadly the AAMC "fixed" my hack. So no, I can't tell.

No difference, at all.
anyone know if you can edit PS after you certify?
Yes, sort of. You can edit your PS, and then you can re-assign it to a program. It will replace the old PS. The program will be able to see that you replaced the PS, but they will not be able to see the old one. Unless they have printed it.

oh gross. so should I just delete my PS and reupload it? I have not submitted yet but noticed an error and "updated" my PS that had not yet been assigned.

Lol you haven’t even submitted.. what are you worried about then? It will update the error when you submit. No one else can see that you edited it…

just wasnt sure if because I updated it after uploading that programs would get that lil "yo he edited his PS".

I'm peak neurotic right now lol

My understanding is that the PS is like a google doc. You just edit and update it as much as you want and it automatically updates the PS that the PDs will see as long as you do it before they physically print everything.

Do programs generally specify the minimum number of LORs they want or the exact number of LORs they want? If a program says "3 LORs" and I have 4 that I feel are likely strong, is it dumb to submit more than they list?

Ive heard through word of mouth that they might just read 3 and ignore the 4th. idk how true this is. if you have 4 strong it shouldnt matter

well I scoured my application and documents for 4 hours straight but im submitted!

EDIT: huh, comlex sent scores right away, step is taking its damn time. is there anyway to confirm the correct scores were sent? paranoid I had a butterfinger moment and put a wrong number.....
🤢🤢🤢🤢

I read in the terms and agreements or whatever that they check to make sure your name, birthdate and all that info on your eras matched your USMLE number so you should be good as long as you don't get any messages saying something didn't match up!... Not sure about Comlex cuz I'm MD but I assume its the same!

ugh lovely! glad to see they are finnaly actively helping us with something.

Has anyone used the residency explorer app on aamc? I have a question that pertains to that and the eras app-what the heck is the difference between number of research experiences and number of publications? lol I can't find a definitive answer online anywhere. Im assuming a research experience includes any project youve done regardless of whether it was submitted or published yet and a publication is well something that was actually published?

Yea research is anything you have done even if it didn’t lead to a publication
