Surprised to see there are still plenty of people gunning for EM and radiation oncology on the verge of becoming the new FM.

does anyone have the 2021 data for end of October? AAMC is misleading because they just skipped 2021, so it’s likely half the increase/decrease in applicants for each specialty from last year

2020-2021 was skipped because of the later submission dates. Apples to apples was this year to 2019/2020.

How worried should we be if the vast majority of programs we applied to have already begun sending out interview invites? At what point do we assume we've been looked over vs. still having a chance there?

I am wondering this myself.

A program sending out one or two waves is not alarming imo… but some of the programs I’ve applied to have sent out four or five. I’m debating on emailing the programs that have sent 3+ waves of interviews already.

Thanks! So maybe programs send out around 5 rounds or so? I wish we knew. So many unknowns.

I think it depends. My theory is the programs that are sending out invites as they review candidates, without reviewing the whole pool, may send out several rounds. They may end up with too few after the first round of reviews, and may need to send more later. Or they might have too many already, who knows?

My top choice, though, took a bit longer to send invites the first time. And they said in the email they were planning for three total interview dates, and all three were available when I went to sign up. So I think they may only send out invites once.

Three TOTAL interview dates? Good lord lol.

Had anyone got their top place as their first interview?? Think this will put you at a disadvantage Because you will be more rusty?

If the website or eras doesn't list the pd email, should we just send to the email listed in eras or the website for a Letter of interest

Thanks! I think the programs I’m applying to tend to interview around 100 people, so I do hope there are several more rounds of invites!

Absolutely a disadvantage unless you are just a total natural stud at interviews. I'm not, so when my top choice had a date that would have been my first interview, I hard passed on that in favor of one later in the cycle.

I sent a couple LOIs today and I sent them to the program coordinators, with the program directors CCed if I could find the email.

I sent a few to PCs asking them to pass on to PDs. Not sure if that was the right move, but it’s done.

Anyone else agree with this?

I'll agree with this, and I purposely had a couple of interviews before my top choice to warm up a little. That being said, because I know I'm also not a strong interviewer, I prepared my butt off for the 1st interview and did feel really prepared and felt I interviewed well.

Y’all convinced me, gonna send a email to see if I can get a later date.

So on the spreadsheet it says one of my top 3 programs only has waitlist dates left. I know its still technically early, but wondering If I should send a LOI this week if I dont hear anything.

anyone know if there is a specific date we are not supposed to send LOIs before?

Is it bad to reschedule an interview that's coming up within the next three weeks? This is one of my top choices and is my first interview... I looked today, and they have a few more dates available later in the cycle. I don't want to mess up their interview days by rescheduling especially with it coming up so soon.

Im no pro but in my opinion in general I would wait until maybe last week of Oct or early Nov. there are a good number of prgrams that havent even sent out first wave yet but I guess depends on the program and how many waves theyve sent out

Does anyone know how often people who get on the Oct “hold lists” at programs eventually end up with an interview there? Are they just playing with my heart or is this a real thing where they actually send you an invite later. These two particular programs sent out rejections as well but sent me a hold list email

If I get an interview invite and they said to schedule my interview on ERAS how do I do that? Im sorry if this sounds ******ed but I don't know what they mean they don't use interview broker or thalamus and its confusing

You should able to go to ERAS and there will be an interview tab. Then you look at calendar view. Then you can sort based on "scheduled" vs "invitations" vs "available" etc

Edit: I apologize if I misunderstood the question lol.

If you know that they have sent out at least a couple of rounds of invites already, and people are saying there are only waitlist dates left, I don't think it's too early to send an LOI this week. Per advice from some interns in my specialty, I'm sending a couple of these this week. But don't do this if they haven't sent any invites or have only sent one round so far. Good luck!!

I think 3 weeks out is totally fine. I rescheduled one two weeks out, which I feel is about the limit for being respectful, and my old spot filled almost immediately.

The weird thing is I don't even see my current date on the calendar? Like usually you can see all their interview days offered, and there will be "0" on dates that just don't have spots. My current date isn't even showing up. So idk if someone will be able to reschedule to that day...

Edit: Went ahead and rescheduled. I guess if you're scheduled on a date with zero availability on thalamus, it won't show up.

Cool cool, Ill look into writing one and send one their way, thanks fam!

EDIT: How does one go about writing these, in the sense that do you just do a few lines saying hey I really like you because xyz, I am really hoping to get an interview

Some websites are saying a page long and that seems wayyyyy to long

So, is it acceptable to take notes during the interview, like with a pen and paper? Have my first one this week.

Also, I agree with others; I put interviews at my top programs well after several "practice" interviews at programs I care less about.

Hope so, I did.

And for the next interview I will continue taking notes on the swag notepad the first residency sent.
A subtle flex that I have options.

(This is a joke)

Welp, my first quasi-LOI sort of bore fruit, I guess.

This was at the program where they invited me but didn't have a spot for me. Emailed the PC, told her I have mad connectionz to the area (lots of family), and I'd love to interview if they have a spot. She asked the PD and they cannot make a spot for me, but apparently I'm going to be the first person they contact when/if someone cancels? Here's to someone else cancelling! I find it unlikely because all the interviews are on Zoom so why tf would you cancel, but w/e. Maybe I'll get lucky.

If/when I get to ~10-12 interviews I will start refusing them.

I don't want interview hoarding to be a thing this year. I have <10 so far, but I already feel very blessed and have no intention of taking spots that I know I won't rank highly.

I feel like I should be doing more to prepare for my interview but like....idk how to.
Same my first is on Wednesday and I haven't even started preparing. I feel like I just need to come up with something for "Tell me about yourself" and look at the program website.

If it’s zoom, why couldn’t they just make a spot?

def not a whole page. they don't have time for or want to read that. just one paragraph about why it's a good fit for you. maybe a second paragraph if you have an update to share. and i personally feel asking directly for an interview is a bit gauche, so am going with "i appreciate your consideration" or similar. just my two cents.

Do you think saying something like "it would be an honor to have the opportunity to return here to continue my medical training" is too much? I'm trying to figure out a good closing without sounding too forward.

On myeras to try and schedule one of my interviews and when i click on a date under availability it says invited and under action it says no action available does this mean all the spots are taken? I am on the waitlist and the program told us to go add ourselves to the waitlist

I believe when that happens it means the waitlist is full for that particular date. Have you tried other dates?
