Colorado

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
here is my stats, hope it helps some of you.
GPA: 3.8
GRE: 1220
had hundreds of hours each in small animal clinic, stables, aquarium, research, and rehab. and load of international working experience

the first letter of my last name is one of the last few of the alphabets

good luck everyone!

::sigh:: no email for me..yet

It's gonna be a long weekend...

here's my stats if they help at all in figuring out this bizarre game called admissions...

1st time applicant
Massachusetts Resident
Undergrad GPA: 3.4
Graduate GPA: 3.8
(both degrees in biomedical engineering)
GRE: verbal 570, quant 640, analytical 5
lots of experience in small animal private clinic, academic and private industry research, as well as working as a vet tech in a vet school hospital
Also worked full time throughout undergrad and graduate school... Colorado seemed to be the only school that took working during school into account

I really thought my not so great quantitative GRE score would be my downfall... but looking again at Colorado's process, they look at you as an entire person, not just a numbers game... which is really how it should be done I think...

oh yeah, and my last name starts with A... if that has any bearing on how they are sending out their notifications...

Here is what a friend of mine from Colorado said:

"I got a phone call a few MONTHS after everyone else got their letters. Unless you get a rejection letter, there is still a VERY GOOD chance you may get in. This school lets in A LOT of people off their wait-list (usually put 150 people on the list). I was in the 100's and enough people decided to go to other schools that I was granted a spot."

This made me feel better so I hope it has the same effect on all of you.

i am an alternate for the dvm/phd program and really, really hope there is a genius on the list who decides s/he would rather go for a dvm at cornell instead... though, i wonder, what if i am rejected from the dvm program, will they take me off the dvm/phd list too?

wikldfocus- I can't beleive that!!!! ( i did get your email bt have been crazy, my old dane just had GVD sx...😱 )

A professor for a new class I have at CSU said the process has gone from very objective to very subjective and students ask him every year how they can get better and he can't answer the question. I have a friend with mch less expereince, equal GRE, similiar grades, but I am more diverse in degree/edu. Me=denied him=interview :meanie:

I have heard it's quite political. Who writes your letters. Also who donates money. Know a dr that runs a big program there that was guaranteed a position when a large donation was made in his name. So I guess next year I am having a fundraiser for me 😎

Wait, Sox and Peco -- did y'all interview already? Or are these automatic acceptance emails?
Either way, that's fantastic news and well done to both of you! =)

I wish I could disagree with you but its true. Knew a bunch of people who admitted that they had connections to the big guns. Others pretended that they didn't know they had an advantage in that way when it was pretty much in front of everyone's noses (wish I could tell you what I mean but I know better). I was (am) only made of hard work and I guess they figure that doesn't pay the bills. I was only sort of joking when I told my folks they should donate some money. Now some other school is enjoying my out-of-state tuition.

i'm so sorry! that just stinks. i know you are going to try again, though, so count me in for a couple $$ 🙂 send an email to the other address if you want to talk...

I'm trying not to feel defensive.

I agree. are_jay, I appreciate your opinion, and the fact that you're trying to make others feel better, but you're belittling those of us who just got accepted.
Obviously I can only speak for myself, but I worked my tail off for 4 years to get the grades and experience that I have.
That being said, I was still shocked to find out I was accepted because I know how many other highly qualified applicants there are to compete with.

Very well put RosieMoll13.

colorado doesnt interview out of staters... which I am one of... so this was the best acceptance ever... no interview needed 🙂

and as far as knowing someone/donating money.... I really know NO ONE out there.... and I am poor.... so no big $$ donations from me 🙂 I am sure in every school there are always a couple students who get in for those reasons, but I am sure the majority of students who get in actually earned the right to be there....

I agree - I don't think it's fair to point to colorado and say that the admissions process is corrupt. There are always 1 or 2 people who got in with power or money at just about every school, whether it is vet school, med school, undergrad...but it's not to the point where you can say it really kept YOU from getting in (unless you're bitter 👎 ). The holistic admissions process may be somewhat random, but so is every other school's, especially those that don't interview.

On that note, I think that the process would make more sense and be a LOT more "holistic" if they actually interviewed the out-of-staters. Besides, Denver/Fort Collins is a really cool area and I would have loved to visit 😀

i have lots of professor friends who interview potential grad (med and science) students often, and even they say the process it is quite arbitrary (and subjective) b/c grades and scores pretty much make all of us look the same... what makes or breaks a candidate could be something in the essay that struck the reader's fancy, or a misinterpreted "red-flag" in a letter of recommendation, or, if in an interview, the interviewer didn't like the applicant's suit, or didn't feel like interviewing that day b/c they had a big grant due (or was up too late the night before partying)... unfortunately, they are only human, like us. it still sucks being rejected (for me - cornell and 1 of the 2/6 finalists not chosen for the dvm/phd program at csu), but, alas, no matter how good i think i am, i simply will connect with some faculty, and not with others (and the pain of rejection may result in some bitter-sounding statements).

i am sure all of us on this board have great applications, but we must allow that the system is run by people, and we just have to make the most of it. after spending my early twenties traveling and "discovering myself", i began this road to becoming a vet over 7 years ago (and, yes, am an older woman by now), and see that the best plan is to have ALTERNATE plans. think of what your basic end goal is (not necessarily a profession), and find five different ways you can get there. if it is to be an advocate for animals, rehabilitate the injured, or, like me, to be a wildlife researcher, vet school may be only one avenue...

ok - enough unsolicited advice. i wish everyone the best of luck, and not to get too ruffled by others comments (even if warranted)... 😍 😍

Hey....I know that kid. Haha.

Ok people.....I use to use this network and found advice from my "elders" to be very useful....so please allow me to give you some advice, hope, and possibly lots to look forward to.

1) If you don't get a rejection letter from CSU: GO out an be happy.
Rejection letter means, "sorry, we didn't feel you're right for us". No rejection letter means, "Hey, you're still in our minds and we're looking for a few things to go through before we make our decision about little old you."

2) I was accepted to a few schools and decided between Western and CSU. If you are accepted to CSU and don't visit, you're an idiot! I was an idiot for a while but my gut feeling told me to at least visit the school before I made my final decision (and I had a hefty scholarship to Western which is close to my peeps). I came, I saw, ehhhh, I thought the area was "aight". But I thought the tour I got (from upper classmen) was bomb. THey are students (like me) who can tell you all the bad/good qualities of the school and why they ended up coming here over other school. Very very glad I did the tour and that I came up. I didn't get to experience the nightlife very much during my visit, but it's not bad....it's not LA....but it's not bad.

3) Western (for those of you who care to know)....I mean the ENTIRE western campus.....is the size of our vet teaching hospital. THe peeps who run Western are like family though.....they gave me the royal treatment and I felt like crap telling them that I was withdrawing me app and that they could keep the deposit. THey have hired down-to earth people to run the school....and I think anyone going there would like the people.....PBL was just not something I thought too fondly of.

Moving on.....

4) Our teaching schemes, labs, and even professors have been around for a while (no disrespect to any of them). They have been doing the same thing EVERY YEAR FOR A LONG LONG TIME. They know what they are doing 3.67 years from now, on Wed, at 3PM. That's tiiiight! No surprises. Don't believe me....go to the CSU web-site .....and find out who teaches Physiology in Fall of 2009 and when his 3rd exam is....hey, and what's on it too while you're at it.

Moving on.....

5) There are annual parties, socials, blah blah blah and lots more going on.... a "NET" program which is basically you getting teamed up with a person from every class and a professor. Not the best system since it just started, but your big sib is just 1 of 4 people who can give you advice. Guess every school has something like this though....nothing special.

6) Opportunities up the @ss. I get 10-20 e-mails A DAY about this clinic needing help, a owner whose patient has cancer needs extra help bringing the dog to the hospital and is willing to lend you his keys to the Aspen cabin for a few days, blah blah blah. That's just one example....but just belive me, I try not to check my e-mail because I get a headache just trying to figure out which experiences I want to have. .....

7) Hmm.....ok, what else. Ok.....here is something cool. My professor Ray WHalen...look him up. Awards up the you-know-what....well, it turns out he's been making these programs for vet school students and nearly EVERY vet school uses his stuff. If it wasn't for his programs...I would have surely failed anatomy last semester. He lets us contribute to the programs and has meetings with a few of us so we can tell him what WE want to see done. Funny thing....he actually does it. He's not just BSing around....he makes changes to the program and thanks us for helping him. You'll feel helpless when in vet school because of stress with classes....when a famous, world-renowned professor says "Thank You" to me"..... I get happy.

8) If you get accepted, call Dr. Sherry Stewart. She's the assistant dean...and she's da bomb. If it wasn't for her help/advice/outgoing nature, I would have been in Western's campus right now.

9) Hmmmm.....what else. OK....so it turns out they put A LOT of people on their wait-list because they accept good students and good students often have a lot of choices. Many go to lower-ranked schools for family/work or other reasons. Everyone has their own life to worry about....but this is a good thing if you're on that list. You can be #120 and still have a good chance of getting off that list and in a seat. I did......

11) Not having a GRIP of hours under your belt is OK. Relax....breathe....it's ok. I did more hours in research that your mom and uncle combined....but very few, if anything....in the others. I know what I am interested in....and did just that.

12) No, I decided not to do the joint DVM/Ph.D program...just in case you are wondering.

13) If you're coming....come early. I moved here from Cali the night before school started.....yeah, I had no friends. People start hanging out and bragging about their fabulous undergrad lives a few WEEKS before school starts. They get to know the town.....I waited till later.

14) You need to find 3-5 people you wanna be friends with in grad school.....yes, 3-5 good friends. You will meet people who grew up on farms....have cows as pets.....and wear cowboy clothing on a daily basis. It's alllllll goood, but I was not use to this coming from Cali so I felt out of place for a while. BUT, I found and got to know a few people in my class that I can relate to (even the cowboys) and hang out with them. CLasses are hard....find people to help you cope with that stress early!!!

15) Did you even notice that there was a #10 missing? Gosh....and you want to be a doctor? Haha.....relax...everything is going to be ok. Breathe.....ok, 1 more time. Aight.....I did this for my girl Melissa because she was just as stressed out as some of you people. I hope you all (including her) haul your @sses over here and at least give the school a view. I wish you all the very best....

The Voice Over Your Shoulder,

-Ash-

P.S- I got luv for people with cows as pets....please don't think otherwise. Haha....👍

P.S#2 - Hopefully I have addressed your concerns and given some of you hope (which was my original intention). Again....good luck and smile! You've made it this far....we'll get through this together🙂

Thanks, Ash. I actually went and visited CSU over the summer and met with Sherry Stewart. Dr. Stewart was extremely helpful and honest with my application, telling me my strong points and weak points that needed to be addressed in my appliction. I also got tours of the hospital and the classrooms/labs/facilities. The students who gave me these tours were also extremely helpful.

Equally important: it was really fun to arrive the night before in Fort Collins and kind of explore the area alone. It really is a nice area - I just wish it weren't so far from everyone/thing that I've ever known :scared: That and the out-of-state tuition is really expensive!

Anyway, my point is that I agree with Ash: if you have the money to do so, fly to denver and visit Fort Collins. I really did love the people, the school, and the area.

Wow, thanks Ash. Loved your words of advice, esp. about the waitlist.

Does anyone know the average number of out of staters they take each year?

Thanks so much for the insight Ash. And, yes, lots to look forward to!

"Hey... I know that kid. Haha" 😛

thanks ash! i can't wait to visit and party with u up in colorado! (whether i'm accepted or not) thanks for always being able to calm my nerves. 😀

Hey guys,
Here are a few things I have been told about CSU from vet school students. Has anyone heard anything similiar or contradictory things for good sources?

They frown upon certified techs. A certified tech took 4 years to get in. I have been told even the techs they hire at the hospital, they usually frown upon lots of expereince, as they would rather train you 'their way"

In general they will take a 4.0 student with a limited vet expereince than an adverage student with steller expereince (unfortunetly I am in the 2nd category). :scared:

GRE's are not a deal breaker, as long as they are adverage. I heard CSU has contemplated dropping the GRE portion of the application all together

Frown upon animal science majors. It took an animal science major 5 years to get in, but he eventually did.:meanie: BUT after 5 years I could have been a lawyer and making $100,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think with an n of 1 for these instances, it's hard to really conclude anything. A CVT took 4 years to get in -- who knows what else was wrong with their application? An animal science major took 5 years -- again, who knows? If the average number of applications for 200 animal science majors over a 5 year period was significantly higher than for 200 biology majors (for example), and all else was equal, I'd believe they didn't like animal science majors. But not based on one (or even a handful) of applicants, whom we don't have enough information about to compare otherwise.

However, I know how FRUSTRATING this process can be!!!!!! Why is my e-mail so quiet?!?!?!? So I'm having the same tendency everyone else is having to latch onto every scrap of information I can find -- but fight the pull of the dark side! 🙂

CSU told me that that they "don't particularly like students with straight As".

They also told me that a high score on the GRE can be used to somewhat make up for a lower or average GPA, especially if you go to a difficult school. It's basically giving a *small* piece of evidence that your 3.5 is due to your difficult school because your test scores are higher than most applicants who had a 3.7, for example. This is just one small factor, though, and CSU continues to not favor any one school over another.

I received a letter from Colorado on Saturday stating that I was a WICHE alternate (one of three). So...hopefully one of the lucky WICHE recipients will change their minds about veterinary school. 😛

well just to chime in... I am a certified vet tech and got in... Though I became certified in Mass and Mass was one of the few states that did not require one to go to vet tech school... I had enough experience hours/education that I got to sit in on the National exam and I passed it... So I am not sure how true that rumor is... I am also an AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician... not sure if they even cared much about that... again, all I had to do was put in enough hours/education and took the exam and passed....

And my undergrad and grad degrees were in biomedical engineering... nothing animal related at all...

I did work full time throughout college, while going to school full time as well... and I think Colorado was the only school I applied to that seemed to care about working and factored that into their decision...

Still no news for anyone out of state?

no 🙁 :scared: i'm so tempted to call them...

When I called Colorado the other day, I was told that it could be up to mid-February before we hear anything. And I was snapped at because evidently that information is on the website 🙂

I just called the admissions office. According to the nice lady I spoke to, ALL of the acceptance letters were sent out last week. Alternate letters were sent yesterday and rejection letters will be sent out at the end of this week.

"CSU is like the hottest guy in room...and you're pretty sure he wouldn't be interested in lil old you =P"

I feel like the hottest guy in the room just broke my heart. 🙁

Did she say all the letters went out via email? If we haven't received anything last week or yesterday, we should assume we have been rejected? Did the alternates come via smail mail and email?

thanks twosoakers! you're right! i have no right to be sad. 😳

wildfocus: i completely forgot to ask her if email or letters were sent out but i'm pretty sure she meant letters. i think there is a good chance that a bunch of people on here will be wait listed and will eventually get in. 😉 there's definitely still hope!

I talked with Janet as well and she confirmed what has already been stated by K9. She said, "acceptance letters were sent out Friday some by only snailmail, some by snailmail/email, waitlisted letters were sent yesterday by snailmail , and denial letters are being sent Thursday/Friday by snailmail ." Hope this helps ease some nerves...

can i just say for the record that if what janet said is correct, then this is the STUPIDEST PROCESS EVER.

HOW HARD is it to email all accepted applicants, or snailmail only ALL accepted applicants. No, instead my friend got an email on friday, and now i get to sit here and see if maybe i'm one of the "snailmail only" accepted kids.

GAH!

cornell did this too....calling applicants for over a week and every day was a killer waiting for the stupid phone to ring

obviously the rolling acceptances work well for schools that interview, like UPenn, but schools that don't interview should TELL EVERYONE ON THE SAME DAY. OR SEND OUT ALL LETTERS ON THE SAME DAY.

okay sorry i'm done ranting now.

There may be a method to the madness. Perhaps in-state were snailmail only and out-of-state were snailmail/email

don't they still have to interview in-state kids? i thought they were interviewing them from the 7th to the 9th of february....

Well, wheover's been accepted, please just let us know when you get the letters I guess...

today (1/24) the actual hard copy acceptance letter came in the mail... contingent that I pass genetics, along with all the financial stuff for next year... wow.. its pricey to be out of state... though I knew that before, seeing the actual numbers are a bit scary... tuition itself is only around $12,000 ... but then there is the $26,300 support fee to pay... ouch! but really, since my in-state school, Tufts, is private, I would be paying pretty much the same thing to go there as well... so overall, the money is about the same anywhere I end up going to...

I was told by a vet I work for to look at it as a mortgage on my life 🙂

Yeah, but Tufts is still more than $10k/yr cheaper, and if you want to go into wildlife or conservation, a better choice (as told to me by adcoms at CSU!)

I am out of state and haven't heard anything yet either

"acceptance letters were sent out Friday some by only snailmail, some by snailmail/email, waitlisted letters were sent yesterday by snailmail , and denial letters are being sent Thursday/Friday by snailmail ."

Welp, that's it. I'm duct-taping my mailbox shut now! *bursts into tears*

Hi, I was notified of acceptance at CSU on 1-19 😍
My stats:

years
GRE : Verbal: 550 Quant: 730 Analytical: 5.0
Worked part time in hospital and restaurant through school

For those who are in, I can't wait to see you!
For those who haven't been accepted yet, good luck and I hope to see you!

keep your head up infinivet! it's not over till it's over! :luck: like ash said in a previous post, if you're waitlisted, there is an extremely good chance of being accepted.

good morning everyone! looks like taenia received an acceptance letter to CSU this morning. hopefully more people have good news to share. :luck:

ps. Congrats Taenia!😀

btw: i guess what they told us about sending out all acceptance letters isn't true. what the heck is going on?!?!

I don't think CSU is finished with acceptances...what about the waitlist??

Thanks for the congrats!

For what it's worth, I don't know how valuable the "oh, I spoke with so and so and they said letters are going out today..." messages are. I would imagine things in a busy office change hour to hour.
