Columbia MSPH Admitted 2015

Hi everyone,
I'm really hoping that the Columbia career services can help me land a satisfying job.
I would like to work in a community center to help those who have suffered violence because I have a criminal justice background, and I might be moving to the Midwest or California.

I'd like to be director of a health organization one day. Do you guys think the career services would be strong enough? Supportive enough?

Of course I'm going to try my best to build solid relationships as well but my current school, Northwestern I feel like is not as strong & I'm searching for summer internships myself...very frustrating.

I'll be honest and say that when I visited Columbia, it seems that the career services mainly placed to people in the Northeast, especially New York of course. They emphasized working and interning in New York a lot, and if not New York, then DC or somewhere else in the Northeast. I've heard good things about the career services office, but all the students say that the networking events held by the office and/or school are what set Columbia apart from other institutions. I also noticed that the professors can help us a lot as students because many of them are honest with our future goals for the practicum/post-graduate life. Basically, it depends on how much effort we put in, but it doesn't hurt that Columbia is an Ivy league school with top-notch alumni connections.

Thank you, that makes me feel really good. I made a Linkedin, and I really plan on going to ALL of the networking and making great sincere connections with classmates, faculty, staff, alumni and others. This is going to be my most important degree.
Thanks for your post.

I remember the career services said that Columbia students have access to the UC Berkeley careers network and job postings so I assume it should be easy to find a position in the Bay area. I don't know about Midwest and the rest of California though.

I still have not received my financial aid package from Columbia.
Anyone else waiting?

anyone get their UNI ID yet?
I haven't received it yet either 🙁

Does anyone know what's next after submitting the SIR? I've signed up for housing and I'm getting my immunization form checked off. Does anyone know what else we need to do? They haven't emailed us about anything else, like signing up for classes and such. :/

I'm not sure. I guess waiting is the next step lol. BTW where did you find the immunization form?

What is taking the Columbia financial aid office so long? I'm getting fed up with them
It's just loans, it's not like I asked for 600 gold bars & the federal reserve.

Isn't Columbia supposed to be generous with their fin aid?

I wish they would hurry up?
How many of you are only taking out Grad Plus loans?

I'm only taking grad plus; thank the lord my parents are helping [we are by no means wealthy [money wise] but they don't want me to be in super large debt...again...after med school.

Hey, don't worry about not having your UNI. Last year, Columbia sent out the email with UNIs on May 30. I know that doesn't mean it'll be the same time this year, but I'm sure everyone in Admin over there is working really hard on graduation-related stuff. Once the class of 2015 is out the doors, they'll shift their focus to us. 🙂

If you want to entertain yourself and have some idea of what is to come, the communication archives from last year are still available online: http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/students/orientation/communication-archives

As for registering for classes, anyone getting an MPH (2-year or Accelerated) is pre-registered for classes. You'll fill out a form later in the summer requesting a schedule, but that's all we have to do. Relax now, if you can! Things will pick up here soon.

How many people are still waiting for financial aid packaging? I haven't heard ANYTHING...

I have. Probably about a month after I emailed them about matching my AmeriCorps award. Not alot of communication around it, but it was added so I wasn't to upset lol.

May I ask what's the justification for having them match the Americorps award? I have a similar thing -- service award.

I asked at the open house and they said they would. That was pretty much it lol.

-- Disregard, they sent it with the supplemental form. --

I know they haven't sent out UNIs, but has anyone gotten their CUID/PID to accept financial aid?

they sent that out a while ago. I've accepted my award since before mid april. Check your email again. If it's not there then email the financial aid people.

Just curious was anyone on here waitlisted and then came off for HPM?

Someone was told that we'd be hearing back this week but so far nothing

Does anyone happen to have access to a reading list for the core classes? Currently have some down time and would love to dig into the texts (and relieve some future reading)

Yah, this would be dope.

Those are pre-readings for orientation. I know they read Epidemiology Matters, but I don't know if that's Core or not. Did anyone get student contact info on admitted students day? They would know.

If your school has a SpringerLink account, they have a ton of public health e-books available for download.

Has anyone received any news on receiving our ID #?

And regarding on-campus housing, how many months of rent to we have to pay for the school year? Do we sign the lease for the summer as well?

Has anyone considered trying to fit in a premed course each semester while at Columbia (either at Columbia or another local school)? I'm all over the place about what I want to do after finishing up the MPH (working vs doctoral work vs medical school) and am considering retaking 2 premed courses but I"m not sure if there is a precedent for it or if it would be discouraged.

An MPH will not help you for applying to med school; i'm gonna assume that you knew that before applying and accepting schools. That being said, their course load [at least the core stuff] appears to be rigorous; during admitted students day someone asked a similar question, I believe, and they were shot down. You'd probably be able to get away with physics and biology [that stuff is easy as heck]. Orgo would not be a good idea. Ughh, this is bringing up not so good memories.

Hi everyone, would the core readings also apply to students in the 1-year accelerated MPH program?
I'm in the 1-year program with a concentration in Sociomedical Sciences.
I put my name in for housing, got my uni & uploaded my picture for my photo ID.
I'm looking forward to orientation on August 31st.

Wait...where did you upload your picture? The accelerated people still have to do the core. They go to basic orientation...so yeah, that reading would be mandatory too.

Edit: ID Website: http://ssc.columbia.edu/new-student-id-cards#id-card

I uploaded my photo where it says "submit your photo" for an ID

Aside from the initial email with our UNI a few weeks ago, have their been any emails pertaining to orientation/ IDs etc sent out?

Anyone know when the Broker's fair is? Starting to feel like the whole apartment search is going to be harder than expected.

Has anyone had any luck uploading their pre-registration form for health immunizations? I'm trying to do it on their health portal site and keep getting the error message that file is over 5mb -- when it actually isnt.

I had that too; just use one of them internet pdf compression sites and it'll go through. The website is not broken.

Has anyone heard back from housing?

I got waitlisted 🙁 Do you think I still have a chance of getting a place in the medical center housing? Or should I just go and look for my own place? Any tips?!

Got waitlisted as well.. I am going to start looking for off campus housing.
Is there a Facebook group for MSPH student or a group with people looking for roommates/apartments?

there are groups based on departments I think. HPM department admits have their own facebook group. IDK about the other ones. If you're getting off campus-> be SURE to ask about bedbugs, and if anyone's room in the building has ever had bedbugs. Best of luck to you.

Hey all,
Dose anyone know how much school work we have to do for the first semester? I read the curriculum and found out we will have to finish all core courses within 4 months... I am wondering if I can literally sleep for the first semester, or just take naps everyday...
BTW, I am looking for off-campus housing, and I found a place in kingsbridge, the Bronx. The price is cheaper than Manhattan have no idea if I should move in:shrug:

Hi everyone, what courses are we taking in the 1-year accelerated program?
Are we taking Biostatistics?
I am in the Sociomedical Sciences concentration, and I want to know what specific courses I am taking for the 1-year.
Thanks

We take the core, and then department specific courses. I think Dr. Stellman , the accelerated program head person/director/boss person, does bi-weekly conferences with us as well. There may be saturday classes/conferences for us as well. I also believe we get 2 electives. You would be better off emailing your specific department, or asking anyone on the facebook group for columbia. IDK how many people come to SDN.

Is everyone excited about orientation?
I still don't have housing?
Anyone else using Columbia's brokers to find a studio? They told me I can find a studio from $1600-2000/month...that's what I'm going to do.
