My impression is that it's close to ten...but I can be way off. Plus there are those who never post on SDN.

wow.. how did you come up with that number? seems like an awful lot

yeah, it'd be interesting to know what kind of feedback he's now giving to people to whom he'd been mildly encouraging pre-may 15.......

Hey all,

He told me that the class remains overbooked as of today and that the chances of anyone being removed from the alternate list seems "exceedingly small, if not nil."

The only way this could happen is if Frantz accepted way way too many kids right off the bat. Schools like Hopkins accept 30% more students than they have spots in a class and then go deep into their first tier waitlist, year after year. Some schools have years where they don't have much waitlist "movement", but that's relative to the previous year. I've never heard of a medical school not going to its waitlist at all.

The other possibility is that Frantz is just saying that to applicants who he hasn't ranked very highly on his list. I've heard horror stories about this guy, even from people at Columbia. That man has far too much power in this process.

Who wants to go to school with a bunch of rugby players anyway?

hi guys,

i just got a disturbing piece of information - frantz is still doing second interviews!! (not to sound like a psycho stalker spy, but i work really close to admissions and can't help but see what goes on every day - and i saw frantz pick a guy up in a suit from the interview room a few minutes ago :( ) so what's the deal??? if the class is overbooked and he's rescinding verbal offers, why would he still be doing second interviews? this is beginning to drive me a little nuts...

since you work so close to the office why don't you just stop in and get the answer from the horses mouth? It will be a lot harder for him to lie face to face and your answer will be much more accuarate than from this msg board.

i actually tried to talk him live awhile ago. he's not into the stop-by. you need an appointment for an interview or have to call. i really wish i didn't work over there though. i pass him in the halls at least once a day.

bummer. I actually work in the NYSPI and saw him only once right when decisions were coming out. I'm glad I hadn't gotten my letter yet :D

Send him a letter about it anyway, and things like Phi Beta Kappa if you got it.

The following was stated by IntlMD07 on this date last year:

"as previously stated on this thread, we have been told that the list is unranked and that an average of 20-30 people get off it every year, however, this year seems to be having a record low number of withdrawals and last I heard the class remains overaccepted."

And she ended up getting in later in May. Soooo, keep the faith guys :luck:

Hey everyone!
What does everyone mean when they say that Dr. Frantz has a certain type of person in mind? Is he really that predictable? I was planning on applying to Columbia for 2005, but now this Dr. Frantz thing is scaring me and might be just a waste of money for me to apply :(

Yeah, this whole Columbia thing keeps getting more and more curious. I feel like I should call this week and candidly ask about my chances after I was told them a while ago (the whole interquartile range thing  ), but have been discouraged by the "it's gotten so bad that we're rescinding oral acceptances" line. It seems similar to last year, save for that hope-wrecking comment he threw in there. Looks like Dr. Frantz had a change of heart in a period of 48 hours.

Since he was telling people about their lower end chances before this week (i.e. "less than 25%" or "5-10%"), I'd be curious to know what he'd say now to people who were in the 50/50 category before the May 15th deadline (and his 180). Would it be lower? Who's got the balls of steel to call and find out?

i've been trying to call for the last 2 days but he's been really busy with class day and commencement (which was wed.). i'm definitely gonna call today (thur.)...this will probably be my last call/communication with frantz, because he made it pretty clear that i'm out of the running last time. i've got some questions prepared though :p

Best of luck Linus! I'm gonna try to give him a call tomorrow or Friday.

I am too. Despite being told of my meager chance of getting in, I still think it's a good idea to keep him updated. You never know...

Yeah.. i know, man. He told last week that he'll keep me strongly in mind and that my chances look good (around 50/50). But today... he basically told me to move on...

Just as I predicted, pre-May 15, more responses were positive; post-May 15, most responses were not very positive anymore.

Dr. Frantz's probably not just saying that to people that he didn't think have good chances--he probably says it to everyone.

Yea I know...I'm not planning to withdraw, but it seems safer to bet my money on another waitlist instead.

I have my reasons...plus I'm not a California resident, my family's not in California, and my nearest immediate family member's in Pittsburgh (My sister). I'll be paying Out-of-state tuition for all 4 years b/c I'm an int'l student...and with the fee increase, UC tuition approaches private school tuition for me.

So after talking to dr. frantz, and hearing about the little chance I have at this point (he told me i had a good shot a few weeks back), I took myself off the list to get some peace of mind. Good luck to those of you still waiting! I'm sure there are other impatient ones like me who will help you out. :)

Sorry to hear nycgal, but I know you'll have an incredible experience at Penn. The way I figure it . . . what's meant to be is meant to be. If I get a call from Frantz, then I'd obviously be thrilled, but if not, then I'm not meant to be out there, and I know I'll have a great time Chicago.

Not Cornell, kwanny? I'm so kicking my own arse for not applying there. The more I hear about it, the more I kick myself. Ah well, there's always residency, eh?

As for this waitlist, I'm not seriously bummed. I'm going to be in NYC one way or another next year, so I'm just counting down the days till I move in August. :horns: Good luck everyone. :)

If I could go back, I'd have applied to Cornell and maybe UCSF...but then in retrospect, I'd lived my entire life differently ;)

If I could go back, I would have saved my money on Cornell. They rejected me so damn quickly (less than 2 weeks), that I get the feeling that they didn't even read my application. I think that my numbers would have made their cut since they were good enough for Columbia and some other top schools. Then again, Cornell hasn't taken anyone from my small undergrad in literally forever.

Sorry to hear that. Apparently dr. Frantz told lots of people the same thing..... I gave up on Columbia ever since I was on the "top of the waitlist". Good luck to those still in waiting :luck: :luck:
He said you were top of the waiting list and you withdrew anyway?

It's all good though, UCSF is a behemoth of a school in its own right. Best of luck in San Fran.

As mentioned, I sent in another letter last week. I received the same old generic response about there being little movement this year. I also asked for a second interview and got shot down again. At least I had to try. Its getting tought to keep this dream alive, but I'm gonna hang in there nonetheless and keep calling and writing. Ya never know...

I just read last year's thread. What a bunch of psychos! But hey, we're all in the same boat anyway. Movement on that list stopped in early June, but I'm sure some offers are made after that. I was in Boston this weekend and ran into a friend who is at Harvard now. He got the phone call from Dr. Frantz in late June (and politely declined due to his other acceptance), so there is still some hope of getting off later. He did have his interview with Dr. Frantz though, just reinforcing once again how crucial this interview is.

As for me, I'm not giving up on Columbia any time soon. Even if our chances are shrinking, I think all of us have overcome tremendous odds by just making it onto this list to begin with. Quitting now would just be foolish. So everyone stay positive and keep writing those letters! ;)

Thanks for the encouragement JohnnieBlue :) . And as for being psychos . . . yeah, they were psychos last year, but I think it's safe to say we are too ;), and I bet there are a bunch more out there who don't post because look at how many hits this thread has.

Hey CalBeE, congrats. that's really great. i'm glad to hear that your persistent efforts are making a difference. let us know how it goes. maybe this could be potential good news for all of us - maybe spots in the class are opening up slowly but surely.

best of luck.
