I know that this was the last week of interviews - I interviewed last week. Does anyone know what the numbers list looks like so far? I'm going crazy waiting to hear something. Is there anyone else out there that interviewed recently? I know there was a list being passed around by admissions folk while I was there - obviously not shown to those of us who were interviewing. I think my interview went well, but the others there with me all seemed great, too, so it is hard to judge. AHHH!!

What day did you interview....just curious...

I interviewed on May 6, and got my acceptance via email today. Yeah! I am very excited to be moving to Des Moines!

Have you guys sent in all your forms already? (like the physical and transcripsts and all) I am like sooooo behind.

Congratulations, Maisy!!!

Hey has anyone got their finacial aid award letter yet? I sent my stuff in over a month ago and still nada. 😕

This is a multiple reply post.

I have sent in my transcripts, pic, fin aid, and various other things...

However I haven't heard anything back on the fin aid package. I have been going through the big packet they sent us and am researching the new medical insurance...seems like an improvment over the other plan that they had.

I actually just got back last week from an apartment finding mission. My fiance and I signed a lease at the Imperial right across the street from DMU, apt. 216!!! So now I just have to pack everything up...grrr I hate moving. 🙄

Hey Jenn, we're going to be neighbors! I'm in 220. When are you going to be moving here?

The new insurance does seem to have better coverage. We just got our financial aid letters this week, so it might take them a little longer to get the ones for incoming students sent out.

Our lease starts July 17th. I am hoping to be in that next week. How do you like it at the Imperial? It seems nice, but I have never lived in an apartment, or a dorm, before.

Genya told me that about 75% of interviewees are accepted.

Do you know if that includes waitlisted people who are accepted or just straight acceptances?

Jenn,
I like the Imperial. It's got everything I need, such as wireless internet, which is a huge part of my life 😛 I know the guy that's living in your apartment now, who's a second year, and a very funny person. Maybe you met him when you were here. Anyway, enjoy your time at home before you're going to make the big move!

I contacted the financial aid office at DMU and they said that they would start processing fin aid for 1st year students starting in June.. so I am assuming by like mid june we should be getting our fin aid info...

Hey guys I am not exactly sure what you are looking for about your financial aid, but I am currently a third year so they have already done ours, but if you are looking for loan disburement dates they are as follows:

DO Class 08:
7/29/04
1/03/05

Those are the dates the funds are scheduled to arrive at DMU, the accounting office takes out tuition, health insurance (for those that get the university policy), fees, etc and then cut you a check for the remainder. That check usually arrives about 2-3 business days following the above dates, depending on where the check is being sent. Hope this helps.

Also does anyone have a definite number as to how many people were accepted off the waitlist last year?

I think she meant that 75% that come to the interview day are accepted and the other 25% are waitlisted or rejected.

When are you guys planning on moving to Des Moines and where will you be moving?? I am planning on moving on July 23rd weekend to the 3000 Grand Apartments... it will be nice to put a face to the different people that I have been talking to on sdn, if people are interested in meeting that is!!...

Thanks

avi

::Luz:: I'm planning on moving the week before you. My lease starts at the Imperial on the 17th. Did you tour with Willie at the Grand? We did, but it was a little out of our price range since we won't have a roomie. Seems nice there though.

::Luckystar:: No, I didn't meet anybody there. We actually looked at a different one bedroom, but since the layout is all the same it didn't matter. My fiance says the same thing about the high speed internet. That is what we work off of now at home, and I don't think I could ever go back to dial-up. lol.

I will be living in the 3000 Grand Apartments too. I am going in early July to set up, but have to be back to Oregon on the 17th for a wedding and I also have another wedding to be in on the 31st, so I won't be able to stay in Des Moines until August 1st. Also, after our first week of actual classes, I have to fly back to Oregon to be in another wedding, it's going to be crazy.

Blake

::dancinjenn:: yea, high speed internet is one thing that I am going to miss.. but I feel like I am sooo close to the university, two steps and I should have high speed access... I did have the tour with willie... she was nice... I opted for the studio on the first floor...we could all meet up at my place if u'd like.. have a chill evening, down a couple of cold beers and just relax..... whoever can make it from the DMU class of 2008, is welcome...

::blake:: u just seem to be waay too busy man.. but see if u would like to stop on by since we are going to be in the same building neways or else I will def stop by when u r back to say hi...

or if u guys feel like u would like to go out that is cool also.... see what is convenient for you all....

later all

I just also wanted to let you all know that not just the class of 2008, but everyone who can make it is welcome.... sorry didn't mean for it to be a select group!!! some of you 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students have given us valuable advice... so u r all welcome!!!!

If it helps, I will be deferring for a year, if they will let me. I'm having a c-section July 23. I don't think I'll be able to get there for the Aug. 2 orientation, given I'll be in the hospital until July 27. Hope this helps someone on the waiting list. :luck:

Well I just returned from my trip to Des Moines, this past weekend. I'm not sure where I'm going to be living just yet, but I have a better idea. However, I didn't get to look at the Imperial I went there, but there was no one around to do any sort of a tour, but I did look at about 15 other places in one day. It was rather exhausting. All in all it was an interesting weekend. Especially the wonderful weather on Sat. night. I wasn't remembering that stuff when I made my decision!!! Oh and about Fin aid packages I stopped into the school while I was there and they said it would be another 2 or 3 weeks for us to get them. That's it for now.

Josh

That is good news about the fin aid packages. I am kinda worried about all of that, but I do know that I have good credit.

::Luluz:: Where-ever is fine by me. We will just have to set up a date to hang out. Doesn't seem like we will have too much time on the orientation week, we are packed morning 'till night!

::Fabio:: I agree...you are way too busy. Those plane tickets must be killer, back and forth so many times. I'm glad that I am only 10 hours by car, if need be, from home.

My wife and I are purchasing a townhome. We close on it June 28th. Does anyone think that applying for FA after that point is too late? I don't think it would be, but wanted to know if any other students have done the same. I suppose my credit rating will be hurt for alternative loans but I should still be able to get them correct? Thanks for any advice or experience anyone has on this.

Any advise on areas to avoid in Des Moines during my housing search??

The deadline for FAFSA is June 30th. I would try to get things in as soon as possible. You can usually get some sort of financial aid at any point, but it is much easier if you get things in before th deadline.

As far as your credit goes, as long as you are not default on anything and don't have a history of late payments, you should be okay. Educational loans are different than regular credit because the lender realizes that you will not be able to pay while you are in school. Therefore, unlike getting a mortgage, an inability to pay is not really the issue, since they assume that you will be able to pay once you graduate with the medical degree.

One thing you may consider if you are married and relocating: if your spouse's income is going to be significantly LESS than this/last year, you can probably write a letter stating that to include with your documentation. If a spouse made, for instance, $50K last year, but will only make 30K this year, it would be worth mentioning, since it may or may not affect your federal award.

After all that, please note that I am not a financial aid advisor. I have just had a lot of experience with this being a non-traditional student.

I just received a letter saying that I am in the top half of the alternate list.

but I have heard that there is not much movement on the list. is this true?

I am curious about the waitlist movement as well. My best friend is waitlisted at DMU, but got the impression that it was only because their class was already full. Anyone know how much movement there usually is?

I found out that I'm in the top 25% of the waitlist. However, I too would like to know if this actually means anything.

So, if we got in it would be a radical life change in only a little time, no? :meanie:

Congratulations to everyone, both the accepted and the waitlisted. 🙂

I would avoid E. Des Moines. South Des Moines is getting better, but definitely E. Des Moines. Good luck. If you go to Yahoo, you can click on real estate and search the city there too. I would recommend a great realtor at Iowa Realty. He has been wonderful for us. His name is Jim Manderfield. I would just call Iowa Realty and ask for him. Great guy. Hope this helps!

I would definitely suggest trying to find a place relatively nearby the school. It especially becomes an advantage on the mornings you wake up to 10 inches of snow!!!!!

Did ya'll who sent in the health forms get titers for that those that are listed? I dunno how I would do that since I just received my last hepatitis vaccine, and I have to wait a month before I get the titer for it.

Don't worry about it, just tell them and give them the records when you get it done. I didn't finish mine until December-ish. If at all possible, finish all that when you're still home and under your current insurance, because those lab tests are not covered under the school plan, at least not the old plan.

Hey,

Anyone fill out that roommate search survey? I did today. Hope I'm not too late with that. So far, I've only had the chance to look at a couple places in West Des Moines a couple weeks ago. Some pretty swanky places out there, and they don't seem to break the bank either. Anyone still searching for places?

How is 3000 Grand??? Is it close enough to DMU to pick up the Wireless???

3000 Grand has really nice apartments. Many people who live there have roommates because it's a little more expensive. I think the last time I checked, a studio went for more than $600. It's very close to the MEC and Tower building. You can't get the wireless signal from school, though. If you have neighbors that are students, which is likely, one of you can subscribe to a high speed internet service, hook up a router and share the signal and costs.

I am going to be living there in a studio on the first floor.. it is expensive... $570 + electricity.... I wish I had looked for a roommate.. hopefully next year!!! Good luck to people who are searching for housing...

Well I've narrowed it down to 3000 Grand or Sun Prarie. Any input from people??? I'm trying to make a decision in the next couple of days. Is there anybody that lives there now that could say what they average for electric/heat?? Lulluz what apt. are you going to be living in at 3000?? I have to admit that the place is VERY nice and I'm sure it would be great to live that close to the school. On another note, while I was out there a few weeks ago I went to the Carmike theatre in Urbandale (across from Perkins) just wondering where people usually go for movies and such?? Also I'll be getting out there around July 11 or 12 will anybody be around since I won't really know anytbody yet???

Josh

Josh, cremaster2007 lives at Sun Prairie. You should PM him with questions. I don't think anybody who posts regularly here lives in 3000 Grand. That place is really nice, you get all the perks, like the pool and gym, but they are pricey and many people are moving out because they hike up the prices more after a year when they make you resign a lease.

Carmike's Wynnsong further down the street is a nicer one, and where we usually go. In early August, there will be this really huge new mall opening, called Jordan Creek, and there will be all these stores that weren't here before, like Abercrombie and Fitch, Ann Taylor, Pottery Barn, The Cheesecake Factory, etc etc. I read somewhere that Century cinemas is planning on having a 20 screen theater there too. So we're all looking forward to that!!

When you do get in town, let us know! People have been setting up sand volleyball teams, softball teams, we go out and play pool some nights...you and anybody else in town is definitely welcome to join us! 😀

::josh::I will be living on the first floor in a studio.. I know the blake and a roommate of his will be living on the 9th floor... I am planning on going to visit these guys when I get there on july 24th.. I believe blake is moving in on 20th.. I really do not know what the avg for elc/ht is at the grand.... will find out soon enough... you can either IM me or PM me.. if u r planning on moving to the grand... that is how I am in touch with blake... can't wait to meet you all class of 2008!!!!!

::luckystar:: I would love to get involved on the volleyball, softball teams if possible.. can you let me know how and when you guys are gonna get that going???

Where will Jordan Creek be?? I was staying next to Cracker Barrell when I was out there. So, I wasn't too far from Valley West Mall. That is awesome that there will be a Cheesecake Factory....I LOVE that place.

Oh and when you say that they "hiked" the rents after the first year what do you mean.....like by how much??? I know it seems like they just recently stopped including heat with the rent.....

Avi, people just have been sending out mass emails to those of us still in Des Moines for the summer. It's a great mix of DO, PT, and PA students. In fact, there was just a game of volleyball this afternoon. DMAKSIMOVIC is the guy to talk to about these things with. He even wants to set up a dodgeball league next year!!

Josh, Jordan Creek will be on 74th and EP True Parkway. It's just a little south of where you were staying. As for the rent hikes, I have no clue how much they were. Just that they were enough to get a few people out of there. But then, a lot of others are staying there too.

I'm letting the cat out of the bag.........luckystar LOVES cats by the way. If you ever need pets to be nannied.....she's your woman.

For all first year DO's that will be in Des Moines the week before orientation, we're planning on having a bunch of social activities to let you meet eachother and a few of the new 2nd years. Feels good.

As far as softball, v-ball, and hopefully dodgeball, right now we're just playing for fun in pickup games. During the school year, the wellness department does a decent job of getting intramurals going. We had volleyball and basketball leagues hosted by AIB, a business school a few miles from DMU. I've looked into starting a dodgeball league and the lady in charge seems interested. We'll see where it goes. If you have more questions, PM me or luckystar since we're both in Des Moines for the summer. Or if you have access to your school email, send me an email. See you in a few months.

Rick James 😀

If anybody will be living at Boulder Ridge in West Des Moines, I will probably be available to help you move in. Go Bears.

Rick James.

Hello all,

My wife and I bought a house in Waukee, it's a western suburb outside Clive.
We are actually heading to DesMoines on tuesday so my wife can interview for a job. We will be moving sometime in mid july so we will be town for any pre-orientation festivities. Can't wait to see you all there.

Tom
DMU 2008

Hey Tom,

I know at least one of our other classmates bought a house in Waukee. It's a nice place, with all the new stuff being built. I saw your question on the other thread, and thought I'd say something about it here. Now that I've survived the first year, I can still say that I think I made the right choice by coming to DMU. Yes, I've had days where I wanted to strangle a professor or two, but just as long as you don't let whatever you don't like get in the way of your learning, it's all good.

As for books, you'll need some sort of text for every class, except Biochem and OMM. You will get excellent lecture notes for those two. Some people didn't buy a pharmacology text (that's in the second semester), but I found the book to be helpful and I'm absolutely sure I will be referencing it in my second year classes. The Board Review Series (BRS) books are just fantastic, especially for Anatomy, Embryology, Neuro, Physiology, and Pathology. I also have the one for Behavioral Science, even though that was one of the classes that sort of sucked and didn't go by anything in BRS, but I hear that book is good for boards. Rumor is, they're reorganizing that class for you guys. Did you want to know about the text for any particular class?
