Hehe...Blake's right...party on people! Oh, one more thing, try to get here to Des Moines at least a week before orientation starts to take part in the "pre-orientation fun stuff".

Get ready for your spanking, Dicky...:meanie:

I just got to this forum and already I'm tired of rip. It's unfortunate that he'll be treating patients some day. You're SSP involvement is great Rip... too bad it will never make up for a terrible attitude. We could all take the time to list our various accolades (I'm sure we would be here all day considering some of the people here).

Well, that's enough of that. I don't like to argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience. I'll stop waisting time on you now rip.

With that all said, I'll give my plug for DMU. This is a great university where the overall student attitude is the best that I've seen. Students here work together toward a common goal instead of working against each other. It was a rewarding decision to come here.

I think people misunderstood what I meant by superiorty. I simple stated this to bolster my argument that this is not a good school. People would only listen to you if you are a top student at this school. Because I am one of the top students at this school, my statements should have a lot of credibility. People who think this is a good school are blind to see the many bad things the school has done to the students over many years. This is not a good school.

Congratulations to all who have made it into DMU so far! Good luck to those who are on the waiting list; I wish you the best. Can?t wait to see you all next year. More interviews are soon approaching? If any of you out there have any questions don?t be afraid to drop me a line. Best of luck to everyone!

Hey I was just wondering where all the other DMU'ers were???

Hopefully those who have interviews soon do well! 👍

Jenn

I'm still here!! Other people have been posting sporadically. I was wondering has anybody received anything else from DMU since sending in your deposit and conditions form???'

Josh

Nothing here...just an email confirmation of my installment and a vague "mid-march" statement about receiving financial aid info.

anyone know what the demographics of DMU are? What's the avg age of students? married/unmarried? the 1st yr class has 200 students, right? Thanks!

Average age for the 2007 class is 24-25. Lots of married/engaged/firmly attached people. A good number of singles. The exact number is unknown and it probably fluctuates. And yes, the class sizes are usually 180-200.

Jenn and Josh: I remember this time of year, when you feel like it's been ages since the school has sent you anything. Don't worry, when all the financial aid stuff starts coming in April/May, and you start to think about housing, your hands will be full.

And Pathology rocks!! 😀

Is'nt path great? I wish they would let us take those quizes on black board though.

Haha you wish! Gets you up bright-eyed bushy tailed, though, doesn't it 😉

Long enough for me to take the quiz and go back home and to bed

WOOOHOOO!!! :hardy: I'm gonna be a doctor, I'm gonna be a doctor! Just got my aceptance via phone today. What a great feeling after 14 rejections. Since this is my only one, it looks like I'm going to DMU.

Welcome to DMU!!! Feels great doesn't it.

Well, I got the big rejection from UIowa yesterday. It's perfectly fine though. I love DMU and have already been through the orientation once (DMU-CPMS). UIowa was kind of a hope and a prayer. The faculty are great, the students are great and the facilities are getting better every day. I can't wait to get started and get going with this doctrate.

To those of you that have heard about the notepool at DMU. I have a suggestion that I will probably be trying to push once we start running our own notepool for the class. At UIowa, instead of paying all that money for someone to print out 200 copies of the notes everyday, they just post the notes to a website and then everyone can:

1.) print them off as they please on their own cheaper paper and ink
2) save them to their computers and then format them, add pictures, etc.

What do you think about this kind of plan happening at DMU this year?

Let me know,

Seth

I interviewed on March 5th.

how long after your file was complete at DMU, did it take to get an interview invite? thanks.

it took about a month to get an invite, and then another month till the actual interview.

oh really..thats a time..i might go crazy by the time i finally interview 2 months later.

I think that notepool idea sounds really good. It will also save a lot of time for the people who would print it out etc.

Josh

Note Pool:

The note pool online sounds great. But who would be allowed access as moderator? Could we all post to it? There would still have to be a schedule on who takes notes when...would that be posted on the site as well for reference?

I think it is a good idea, but there may be some initial obstacles as to how to take care of all the admin type stuff.

I was invited to complete 2ndary on 11-5
I sent it in on 11-19
I got an interview invite on 11-24
Interviewed on 1-9
Accepted on 1-21

hey dancinjenn,

thats a long period between interview invite and actual interview, did you set it up that way or they just schedule your interview that far in advance?

Nerves...

That is just when they set up the date.

Well, one of the elected jobs of the notepool staff is to take the typed out notes from the note typer for the day and bring them to the printer (something of that sort). Instead of doing this, they could just post them to the website. I think it would work well.

Seth

Seth

That would sure save on paper...and having to catalog it and cart it around. I think it is a good idea, I'll vote for it...or whatever.

Hey guys,

I didn't get notepool this year, but there had been talk in the beginning of the year about posting the notes somewhere online. The Institutional Computing people weren't too receptive of the idea because they were concerned about space on the school server, but I'm sure if you get enough people involved, you can organize something that will work. The election for being on the Notepool committee happens very early on, so if you'd like to be apart of it, keep that in mind.

Good luck!

Hey Jane,

What is your perspective about notepool? Is it helpful? Not helpful? Do you think it helps many students? Thanks for your help, hope everything is going well for you.

Hi Blake!

Good question. Notepool definitely helps some people. I go to class anyway, and take notes while I'm there, so having notepool would just mean more things for me to read over. If you think that you'd like to study on your own instead of going to class, which many people do, then having the notes would help, in case there are addendums or changes that the professor would like to make. The note packets for many classes (biochem, immunology, microbiology, pathology, and more) are quite complete and are good representations of what the exams will cover. I have to say though, that there have been times when the notepool material had some errors, and they really do make an effort to catch these errors or send out emails about them. They are meant to serve as a supplement, and should not be used as your main resource when you study.

I guess it really depends on your study habits and preferences. The class ahead of us strongly recommended notepool, yet many of my classmates opted not to buy them, and some people who did buy them this year have decided not to buy them again next year.

I encourage you all to talk to more people about this, because this is only my opinion, and notepool has certainly been a savior to more than one person. With all the money you will be spending, the cost of notepool is not too significant, and may be just what you need.

You should be getting a sample of what notepool notes are like, for the Intro to Osteopathic medicine class. There is no notepool service for Biochem because the note packets you buy are more than enough. So, you will have sufficient time to make a decision. Oh yeah, the old exams that notepool sells are VERY useful, and you can purchase them separate from the notes.

first wanted to say that I am a new member but have been reading all ur posts so far and have to thank you all for a wealth of information. I interviewed at DMU on the 5th of March and I got my call this past thursday and yayyyyyyy!! I am going to DMU and become a part of the class of 2008. Thank you everyone keep up the good work and good luck to those who are still in the interview process... have faith and keep working at it..

I got notepool and in the begining it was pretty good and use full, but as the year went on the notes got crapier and crapier. My stance is that next year if they have paid notetakers then I'll sign up if not no.

Besides with all the powerpoints being put up on blackboard and friends who are regular class goers I dont feel that I miss out on much by note useing note pool. To be quite frank I havent used notepool sice Immuno.
\

Hope that helps.

hey guys, i am just complete as of last week at DMUCOM. Just kinda worried as its getting late in the process. I was thinking of maybe expressing my interest in DMUCOM to the admissions people and how much i'm looking forward to an interview there. Would anyone know who i should address this too and if you have their email? thanks...

The Admissions office would be my first choice here. Their email is [email protected], and you can address it like, "Dear Office of Admissions", because there are too many people in charge to address it to one person, and you never know who's going to read it first. All I know is, one of my friend's husband completed his file 2-3 weeks ago, due to a missing LOR, and he was invited for an interview just last week. Good luck to you!

Hey, congratulations! Look forward to meeting you in August. 🙂

Thanks luckystar. .. I look forward to meeting you also in the fall... does anyone know about when and where one would need to go for apartment search in Des Moines... As I am not going to have a car, something that is a walking distance from campus would be great..... also, doesanyone know about the room mate search?? thanks

later y'all

I believe all the roomate info and stuff comes out April 1, but there are also links on the DMU website (under student services) for apartment searches and that kind of stuff.

However, this reminds me of a question I've been curious about for a while....does anybody have any suggestions for good and affordable ways to move all your stuff out there, particularly if your coming from far away??? Thanks.

Josh

This is what I plan on doing.. actually, driving up there using the one way rent a car with some kind of a small ul-haul attached to the back... I am still looking for good prices.... will keep you all updated, if I find something cheap.. I am going to be coming from maryland also.. a long drive (about 800miles)....

Yup, you can find more info by browsing on the DMU website. They have links to management companies and stuff...and a table sort of thing with feedback about the various complexes that students tend to live in, but it may be outdated. Here's the link to my apartment's management co.: www.venturellc.com The word is, stay away from the Grand Prix apartments, but not everybody complains about it. Best bet is to come and see for yourself around June or July.

Josh, when I moved, I sent about 9 big boxes by UPS Ground. They all arrived the day I flew in, and it cost around $210. My brother and mom flew there with me, so we were able to take a few suitcases with us. Being that you're from the East Coast, it might be more convenient to do it this way, but if you'd like to plan a cool road trip with a U-Haul, that would work too, and wouldn't cost much more.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. It has been helpful on notepool and other odd issues. Anybody out there interview on Feb 12. Can't wait to see you in August.

Hey class of 2008,
Hope everyone is getting excited. I remember around this time last year I was so psyched and the first day couldn't come fast enough.

About moving stuff. I also did what Jane did. It's cool UPS will come to your door and pick stuff up for you, and you can check out prices online. I shipped like 6, 80lb boxes by UPS ground and it was under $200. I found that to be the cheapest way and I moved from WA. Plus the boxes got here before i did. And as one added bonus, once the boxes get here, the UPS guy carries them to your apartment for you...so that's nice.

well good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear for an interview, they still have spots so there is a good chance still.

Jenny

Hey everyone!

I'm interviewing very late in the cycle at DMU...waited 2 months for one of my LORs to get submitted. Anyway, does anyone know how many spots are left at this point??

Also, I'm wondering if anyone that is currently attending DMU can tell me if the school has the option of deferring matriculation for one year after acceptance, like most MD schools do? Due to family issues that arose post-application, I will not be able to begin until 2005. I know U of I will be okay with this (I'm currently waitlisted), but I feel like DO is a better fit for me. I don't want to give up my opportunity to interview, but if it is going to be a waist of time...

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey Maisy-

I interviewed at DMU mid-Dec and at the Univ of Ia late Jan. I was accepted at DMU and wait-listed (out of state) at Iowa. I can't quite bring myself to let go of my spot on the waitlist at Iowa, but I'm pretty sure I'll choose DMU. Going into this, I thought I'd rather be at Iowa, but interviews at each completely changed my mind. For what it's worth, I definitely think you pursue DMU. I can't speak to the number of unfilled seats, but I don't think they would continue to interview if they were convinced the class was full. They were really very familiar with my file when I went in, and it seems unlikely they would put in that much effort if they weren't still giving out acceptances. I think you should be honest with your interviewers about your reasons for deferment and see what happens. If you're really interested in a seat for the next class, it's in their best interest to offer you one.

Okay, I've got my interview scheduled for mid-April. I'm getting really excited! 😀

w00t!

I thought of sending boxes like that, but I have too many big things. My bed...couches, etc......so I'll have to rent a truck I guess. UHaul was actually kind of expensive so I'm sorting my options. I'll have it figured out eventually. BTW the apartment ratings from students are outdated, they're actually not even there, I was assuming they would post an updated one on the website when they had all the other stuff up there. Like the roomate match.

Josh

hi all,
congratulations to all DMU acceptees!

any advice for the interview?.I will be interviewing on Apr 1.I am wondering if any other SDNer is interviewing with me?
