Does anyone have an interview on 9/9? Hotel suggestions?

Does anyone have an interview on 9/9? Hotel suggestions?

I would suggest staying somewhere by the airport or downtown that offers an airport shuttle. DMU is pretty close to both the airport and downtown, so the morning of the interview the cab ride will be quick and cheap. Some hotels also offer a local shuttle that may be able to take you to the school.

Look at priceline and hotwire, they seem to have the best deals, just make sure you are looking in one of those above areas. If you start looking at other areas on there you may end up pretty far away from campus. There are really only 4 hotels or so downtown and all are within reasonable distance of campus, as are the hotels near the airport. You can really save a lot with these sites if you do your research and are willing to take a small, sometimes gut wrenching risk...but what's life without a little thrill. :d

stay with a student. that's what i did. It worked well for me.

I would find that stressful, because you feel like you should be talking to the student and finding out info about the school, area, etc..

I think for my interviews I am going to enjoy the quiet time in my hotel room the night before where I can do research on the schools myself, check out the area, and be in complete control of my immediate surroundings. I guess it's just a zen thing for me, but I'm not taking advantage of any of the student housing options.

I feel the same way as you do. I would feel stressed too being with another person. I am currently checked in the heartland inn. my interview is tomorrow. It's definitely peaceful and relaxing. I know that some people are comfortable with the idea of staying with another student and would consider it advantageous. Its just not for me I guess

Interesting story. I don't have a first choice.... I'm going to wait until interviews and acceptances until I rank schools by preference. Say I get an acceptance at X and Z and Y is an upcoming interview. I'll compare X and Z and chose my number one from there, then see how Y works out. That way I have a running list for my number 1!

hey, I just got into LECOM too and have an interview at DMU later this month. I'm wondering which school you liked better?

Yeah, I can see both sides as well. I think it's definitely a preference thing. Either way, the key is knowing what is right for you, so I'm glad that you are enjoying your night prior to your interview! Good luck tomorrow!

Good luck today!

I'm going to be staying at the heartland inn too. I'm another one of those that would feel a little nervous staying with someone I didn't know the night before something as important as a med school interview.

I'm interviewing on 9/20 - any current student willing to host me on Sunday 9/19? Just looking for a floor to sleep on (i have air mattress) and place to shower - if so please PM me

to summarize: I love DMU

The school is great, the professors and students were extremely friendly and the only gripe I have is how uncomfortable my heels were. Overall, I give the interview experience and the school an A so far. The area maybe a B. The interview questions are not intimidating and I was able to have a good conversation with the panel of interviewers. My main tip is to know why you wanted to become a doctor specifically an Osteopathic doctor, ask important questions during the tour and during the interview and try enjoy and relax.

The interview went so well that waiting two weeks for a decision will make me go crazy. Hopefully they will accept me. Crossing my fingers:xf: I will try to remain sane until I get a decision:scared:

If they don't accept me. I will be really sad🙁 but I'm the type of person who believes that everything happens for a reason so I'm hoping for the best.

Nice! I'm glad it went well! I'm sure you did great, so now it's time to relax and enjoy your flight home.

Hey everyone,

I had my interview at DMU last week (Friday the 3rd) and I was extremely impressed by this campus! I was unsure about Iowa and didn't know how comfortable I'd feel at DMU, but after spending a day there my views have changed. DMU is a beautiful campus, the students are great, and the professors are amazing.

If I get accepted at DMU, I'm going to cancel all of my other interview invites.

Good luck to all future interviewees!

-Kam

Were you out early? I thought the interview ends at 3:30? Anyway, I'm at Des Moines! Staying with two students and they are extremely friendly and nice. I even have my own bedroom to sleep in. :meanie: I'm a little bit hungry though and I have decided that I'm gonna buy them dinner tonight :] We will see how it goes tomorrow

Hey guys,

I'm interviewing 10/11. I wish everyone good luck with the process and hope to hear more from everyone interviewing in September. I've been hearing really awesome things about this school so far 🙂.

Hey guys,

I'll write this now while it's still fresh in my mind and for everyone else who is still wondering about the interview process (I was in the same position up until today).

I arrived today at 830am on the second floor (they call it the 1st floor) of the SEC building. We immediately got our pictures taken for their future reference and offered us breakfast bars and water/soda. We were then taken into a small conference room (about 15 people were in my interview group) where we got to meet the associate dean for admissions (Tom Mueller). We did three things here: first, we went around the room and had to do a short introduction (name, major, interests) and then say one interesting/weird thing about ourselves (mine was that I did a 100 mile bike ride last year). A quick note that Tom Mueller is a really funny, light hearted guy and makes funny comments about a lot of things to lighten the mood/calm nerves. After this, he goes over DMU student pass rates and a financial aid lady gives a generic talk with a hand out.

After, we are taken on a preliminary tour to see the simulation rooms, mock-surgery rooms, and other class rooms. At each point, a professor of the school will tell you about each area and answer questions. The last activity before lunch was to talk with two OMM fellows who show the OMM technique and they answer some questions you probably wouldn't want to ask deans and/or professors.

We then had lunch with 4 current students who answered more questions before the interview and would tell you about loans, what your interviewers are like, things to do in the area, classes, etc.

After lunch, there were 2 interview groups (1 early and one later). While one group was interviewing, the other group went on a tour of other buildings, the gym, library, school store, and more classrooms.

Personally, I thought the school was very impressive. At the end of the day, every single question you could think of was answered (you have many opportunities to ask professors, deans, and students questions). The technology and facilities appear brand new and up to date/state of the art. The student body seems very close-knit and the local area is calm/serene (but I'm told the night-life is pretty good too). My interview was very relaxed with 2 professors and 1 student. It was more a conversation (one initial question, then more based off of your response). Mine took 30 min, but a few went to about 40-45 min. No ethics questions, mostly about activities I've done or my personal philosophy on certain topics (what qualities should a doctor have, etc.). My hardest question was "if you could write a book, what would you write about and why?"

Overall, great school and I'm glad I had my first interview here. Hope this helps.

So you were with me today at the interview. Since you mentioned about your 100 mile bike ride. I think I remember you! Well best of luck to you! Maybe you'll recognize me too since there's only four women interviewed today.

Hey guys! Good luck to everyone who has interviews!

I have one more question. Everyone here says to ask a lot of questions, and I realize this is important, but I am kinda lost. I don't know if I really have questions for the interviewers that I can't check on the website.

What are some examples of questions you guys asked, just to get my mind rolling?

Did you ask about financial aid? the facilities? clubs? classes?

anything?

Ask questions! If nothing else, it's a formality. There will be a student interviewing you - if you can't think of anything academic related to ask about, ask them about extra-curricular activities, clubs, free time, etc, etc. You can always ask about research opportunities too (even if you aren't that interested) because chances are, the professors interviewing you will be involved in some sort of research and would love to talk about it.

I think I do since it says you are from california. I'm jealous of all the hiking you get to do there, sounds like an incredible area 🙂

Congrats! That was sure fast.

Is DMU your top choice? are you still going to other interviews?

My first acceptance! I'm pretty excited. And for those who are wondering, you have until Dec. 14 to pay $500, and the other $500 is due in May to hold your seat.

I am withdrawing from most schools and going to a few interviews. DMU is at the top of my list and it will def be #1 if I get a scholarship. If I don't get financial aid I will decide from amongst the other schools I like a bit further down the road.

I interviewed 9/2 and I haven't heard back! MAYBE THEY'RE GOING ALPHABETICAL? Ahh I'm going to be brown bagging it all weekend until I hear back next week.....

I bet you'll hear soon, mmikey. I got my e-mail at 4:55 pm CST, and I am close to the beginning of the alphabet. Good luck! :luck:

Yay my hypothesis! Now just for some concrete data. Buut I emailed a friend in the admissions office and I was told, "We received about half the files back from the committee from the first week of interviews. (This was a somewhat random group – so don’t read too much into it!) Relax over the weekend – we’re hoping to get the rest of the decisions out early next week"

Hope the rest of us from than can breathe now 🙂

thats what i'm hoping, because i really liked DMU. I'm going to scour last years thread and see how much movement there was.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but last year there was absolutely no movement on the alternate list. Not even one person was called off of it...but every year is different...I suspect DMU is going to be more conservative with acceptances this year because last years class was overfilled by ~20 students.

I guess I meant in general waitlists tend to move a lot. I don't really know specifically about DMU. And FYI, Willthethrill, if we end up in the same class I am calling you Debbie.

Does anyone know when financial aid decisions are made? As in, if a student gets accepted (in Oct/Nov or so), will financial aid information be available before the Dec 14 deposit deadline? Are financial aid decisions standard from school to school?

I'm just curious...

Thanks!

I got IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍:luck::luck::luck:

dmu rocks!

For those who got in already, you guys are sooo lucky! I got interviewed 9/9 and I'm hoping I get acceptance soon also.

I was in the same boat. I realize questions are important, but that most questions can also be answered from the website/information packet. I asked questions suck as : what is your favorite part about teaching/tell me more about the anatomy program...etc. stuff you couldn't really get off the internet. If you dont have any questions, I think its better off not to ask something obvious and just to say that you your questions have so far been answered.

Hey everyone,

I've been accepted to DMU. I'll be cancelling all of my other interviews!

See everyone there next fall.

For those who already got the admission decisions, did they email you? Or did they send you a letter?

The dean showed up at my front door and had a huge copy of my acceptance letter, like those huge publishers clearing house checks. I cant believe he flew all the way up to Alaska just to give me that!!
