DO for Canadians

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
She means that you get an automatic interview if you get a secondary application from Touro. Compared to other schools where getting a secondary doesn't mean you will get an interview.

Touro pre-screens the applicants before they send out a secondary.

Cool, thanks!

hey all

I got rejected from KCUMB today 🙁 that's sad because I still have no acceptances to rely on...anyway Western here I come...now western is my top choice  hope I can join the rest of you

Oh man. So sorry to hear that. I guess it is meant to be western- good luck. I didn't receive anything yet.

thanks...I just wish western's class isn't full already...let me know if you hear back....well your mind is set on western anyway

First of all, best of luck to you UBCVAN. Now I'm gonna assume you're a past/present UBC student for this question:

Did you take anything beyond PHYS 101 and 102 (6 credits total, but if you remember they each had an alternating lab component)?

If not, did you have any issues with meeting the 8 credit hour w/ lab physics requirements when applying to DO schools?

Any other UBC students have issues with the physics requirements for DO schools?

Thanks for your replies.

thanks. well I never went to UBC, I went to SFU. but how many credits were the lab components? I believe you add the lab component to the 6 credits. so I guess you need 2 credits of lab to make 8.

the person to talk to is drctother. He went to ubc. you can find his post on last page and contact him. or if he just sees this he can just answer your question.

good luck!!

hey, I just graded from UBC in may. I did not take anything beyond PHYS 101 and 102. However, i did have some problems convincing schools that there was a lab and even though its only 6 credits, its a full first years physics. All I had to do though was go on the UBC SSC site and find credit description etc and email the links.

Maybe even 100 and 101 would count🙄 that would be nice considering how much of a joke PHYS 100 is lol

wait what? The class is full already? Or am i misunderstanding what you meant?

sorry to hear about KCUMB🙁 but at least that means there is hopes I will see you at Western and we can represent Vancouver🙂

Don't worry UBC- I am sure the class is not full yet. the day I interviewed they mentioned it the class is about 50% full. there was only 1 interview day after that. It can't be full.

From what I have heard, usually if you interview in march than it's probably late. you are in Feb so you should be fine.

 imagine if Canadians actually talked like that in South Park....it'd be hilarious...

drc: i didnt mean it was full, I was just asking if it was...

hey medapp::

how long after your western interview did you get an acceptance?? how about AZCOM??

hey medapp::

how long after your western interview did you get an acceptance?? how about AZCOM??

I think Western adcoms meet on the thursday of the week after you interview and mail out letters on friday. You can call them on friday to find out if you have a deposit or another interview scheduled somewhere else. That's what I did- they will ask you for a proof though. In any case, you will get your letter within two weeks.
They will let you know what day the letters will be mailed out- they are good on that.

AZCOM- They told us that we should hear something within two weeks. I heard back from them exactly after two weeks.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this thread for a little bit, but haven't really introduced myself yet. I'm a Canadian DDS, that decided to apply to DO programs this year. MD never appealed to me, but I really like the philosophy of DO programs. I did apply late, but I am still hoping for some interviews. I'm just waiting for my MCAT scores now.

Probably this question has been answered before, but which schools allow you to apply without being a US resident? I see a number of you have applied to Western, but the website was saying that you had to be a US resident.

I ended up applying to PCOM, AZCOM, Nova, New England,Touro NY, and LECOM. I have found that AZCOM has been really Canadian friendly. I was concerned that my credit hours for the pre reqs were defficient, but they emailed me quickly stating that they realize that it is just a difference in the way that credit hours are counted.

well there are a lot of schools that "accept internationals" but the ones that have constantly been giving us interviews are TouroNY,AZCOM,WESTERN,KCUMB,NOVA. all I can remember for now. I think for western you need to look harder for it to say they accept int.

whoa whoa people. BUMP. This thread cant disappear! haha this is first time this thread has been on page #2 since as long as i can remember

sorry to hear..is that Touro NY??

I had my interview today at AZCOM and so at this point I'm waiting to hear back from western and azcom!!! please don't reject me like kcumb.:xf:

Last bit of advice folks, if you do end up getting an acceptance, OVERNIGHT YOUR DEPOSIT/ACCEPTANCE VIA CANADAPOST, OR WHATEVER MAIL COURIER. It'll cost you 40+ dollars, but that still beats getting waitlisted for a guaranteed spot in the class of 2016....

Hmmm My western decision won't come out soon. I have given NSU's deposit... Now I am literally thinking: Go to NSU, Go to Western (if I get in?). I like Western, but spending $1750 (500 for DMU and 1250 for NSU) hurts.

Yes UBC its Touro NY.

Hello everyone! Current med student at AZCOM, just wanted to say it's pretty frickin' awesome to see so many Canadians applying for D.O. 🙂 good luck to everyone, feel free to pm me if you have specific questions about AZCOM.

OOOOOOOOOOO CANADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... 😀

VPP: sorry to hear about the rejections🙁 not to sound selfish, but at least theres a chance that you will be another Canadian at Western🙂. When you get your Western acceptance, you will only have two choices instead of 4😛

hab818: hmmm a habs fan, I guess we can let that slip. Just kidding😛

dude honestly, 1250 dollars is absolutely nothing if it means going to your #1 choice :xf:

totally agree! If I wasnt so jetlagged stuck in the Singapore airport overnight I would have said that too lol

Especially since we will all spend what.....like $200,000 at least in the next 4 years

so I saw another large group of ~40 or so DO interviewees at COMP today, any Canadians onboard? 😀

supposedly this was the last interview for this cycle..I was on the feb 10th group? did you see me? 😀

anyway the mail should be here soon, it's been 2 weeks now :scared:

Hey guys!

So I have been looking into financial institutions for loans. BMO, TD, RBC and Scotia give around $200 000 line of credits over the 4 years of study but you can access only 50k in the first year.

So my question is, has anyone, who is deciding to go to AZCOM, able to figure out the finances to get I-20 issue?

Thanks!

I have an interview from TOURO-COM next week on 15th March; any advice/tips ? I have been closely following sdn and premed101 very closely ..its nice to see so many canadians applying for DO ..btw I m currently studying at U of T Mississauga.

Any help appreciated !!!

At this point - play to win! Go on the interview feedback section of SDN, find a list of all the quesitons they ask, and start compiling your answers. Memorize said answers, rehearse rehearse rehearse in front of mirror. Maybe even get your parent/friend to askyou questions so you can reply back to them and get some feedback. OVERNIGHT your cheque if given acceptance. Call back 1 week after interview to ask for result of interview, the goal now is to avoid the waitlist!

I'm just sending in my secondary app tomorrow because they just got my Jan MCAT results. Do you have to be an American resident with a visa already??

No you do not.

Hey guys! I don't come to the pre-allo or pre-DO forums much, but just wanted to let you guys know that I'm a Canadian at a DO school and if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask (better to send a PM). It's AWESOME to see so many Canadians going the DO route! Just make sure you know what you're getting into. Welcome!

Hey guys. Has anyone had problems securing a loan for med school in the states? I've heard of Scotiabank and RBC as the two to go to. Is the process fairly straightforward? If not, anything I should do to prepare?

Thanks!

Hey so here's a question for any DO students from Ontario:

I'm a Canadian who lived in Toronto until high school but I've lived in the USA since then (my family still lives in Toronto). Since I'll be attending Western/COMP next year, how do I go about getting financial aid from Canada? Is there a "fafsa" for the federal government or is it a provincial affair? If so, does anyone have experience with Ontario? And in general, are the loans more favorable than the Stafford loans available to Americans?

Thanks.

I haven't officially went in for the loans yet but I did general inquiry and was told it's pretty straight forward. It only takes a day or two to process your loan application

Hey, I will be seeing you @ western in fall. Are you doing ISAC?

This is what I know about the loans. OSAP gives you about 10k/year I am not sure when one can apply for OSAP and any federal loan. Can someone who went through this in the past comment on this?

You can get a private education loan from banks- most banks give you about 50k/year. The interesting thing is the interest rate is about 3% for these loans while fafsa/stafford is about 7-8% from what I heard during financial presentation during my interview. So you should go for loan in Canada if you can.

Yes, I'm doing ISAC. I got so excited when I read about this low interest rate that my girlfriend thought I got another med school acceptance! Thanks for making my day.

I cant decided whether or not to stay in the ISAC program ahhh. Ive kind of summed it up as:

Pros:
-You have less of a course load in the fall
-You will know the material better
- You can teach ? I dunno if this applied to anyone, i could care less

Cons:
- You get paid less than minimum wage (although this really means nothng to me)
- You leave home early, this is my biggest con. I kind of want one less summer with friends seeing as how I have been traveling for last 3 months and if i dont see them this summer, I probably wont see them for a loooooong time

Agree with one of the posters above. I personally didn't use OSAP for med school since I used it for undergrad in the states, but even then I only got like 6-7k per year. Not much. Just go for finaid from Canadian banks. I have TD and Scotia at about 3%. Pretty sweet rate (although I needed co-signors since I'm in the states for school). Also, exchange rate is about 1:1 for CDN:USD.

Suck on that, US Stafford loans!

are those rates variable or fixed?

Edit: also, are the repayment terms similar to US loans (30 or 15 years? is a hardship deferment possible? what will the minimum payments be like during residency?)

I believe I have variable rates, i.e. prime on one loan, prime+1% on the other, or something like that. Don't think hardship deferment is an option, but I haven't really looked into that. I pay off interest monthly (or simply take it out of the principle balance). I plan on starting to repay the principle off of my loans once I finally start making money in residency.

Having spent the summer in the SMSPP program, here's my 2 cents. They'll work you hard for 5 weeks of ISAC gross anatomy, you most likely won't have time for anything else except studying gross anatomy every day. The alternative is to take it in the regular year and do it in 2 months (top of some other courses) - which is pretty manageable. The main problem with ISAC is yes, you cram it all in during your 5 weeks, but your first 2 months of school is way too light, so you tend to study less, and when the next system hits, you'll hit a wall (some people feel like they have to "go back" into studying mode again). I've seen it first hand in a few ISACers. The other thing is, once you become labeled an "Isacer", there's a tendency for them to stick together, lol, like people will go "o... he/she's one of them". It's nothing probably, but be forewarned if you end up hanging out with only the other ISACers for the rest of the year - 2 years lol.. Also, if you are Canadian, you probably need some time to figure out your apartment situation, get a driver's license? get a car, etc etc, set up your bill, get internet - all these things take up an incredible amount of time. I seriously doubt that you'll be able to do these things on top of ISAC..

I just submitted my secondary back to Touro-NY. How long does it usually take before the interview invitation. I know I'm late in the game, but still holding out some hope - had to wait for Jan MCAT results.

Just outta curiosity how long have u known about DO? It takes about 3 weeks if I remember, although that was back in late sept/early oct for me. Also it was probably more busy back than.

what are your stats if u dont mind me asking? Its an anonymous forum so your secrets safe😛

hmmm good call. I Was a little worried about the second term hitting wall idea. Also I would really rather not be known as an ISACer. Nothing against it, but I mean no one wants to be known as a person in a small group

I definitely need to figure out apartments etc 🙁

thanks🙂

I've known about DO since dental school, but at that point I was interested in dentistry. Once I graduated dental school and worked in the US I was exposed to osteopathic medicine more. I'm now working back in Ontario.
