To be fair I was shocked by some of the individuals who matched prelim surgery. They were superstars for categorical spots on paper so I’m wondering if they aimed too hig

You do realize that Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is an LCME accredited MD school.
It is totally different than the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

20 Prelims? is this including the Rads and other specialties that require prelim or are there 20 additional students who only matched a prelim year? I couldn't imagine paying 400k+ to go to azcom and then only getting a one-year internship that could possibly be a dead end.

Also like you mentioned I personally know 2 other superstar kids in addition to the Jeff Philly IM in the class above me at Rowan and I was waiting for a huge name place for them to match at and they both matched unranked community programs. After chatting with them it was for location and family reasons

This will be me when I match community IM at home. Anyone who sees my (hopeful) match will be super unimpressed and never guess that a 250+ is behind it. Gotta make yourself happy though not others.

FWIW: What world we live in where a DO matched at NYU ortho and a USMD matched at larkin ortho haha... the merger has been good for most DO’s overall imho, but the senseless expansion of schools and class size is what is hurting the bottom of the class at DO schools.

As far as expansion I can’t imagine how it will be in 3-4 years, it’s not sustainable unless there is an increase in GME spots, I heard a rumor that Congress was gonna pass a bill for that idk...

Ya but those spots will all be primary care. Competitive stuff is going to be spread thin. Especially after pass fail boards.

That just kicks the can down the road. The options in the soap were pretty bad this year in every field. It’s time to start closing schools or reducing class sizes.

IDK. All they would have to do is increase slots by a couple slots. Say from 5 spots in a program, to seven, then split 5 salaries 7 ways. Problem solved for now. Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't tried that yet. Before the long knives come out and slice n dice me,, I'm not advocating this. Just thinking like an administrator.

Well there were 16 this year. Think 3 years ago only 4 DOs matched ortho and this year there were 107. Gotta cross our fingers that the gaps will slowly close over the next several years!

people look at lists and only glamorize the NYU and mayo surgical sub specialty matches. What they don’t understand is

1. There are DOs every year who match at DO or lower ranked MD programs who rank the “lower” programs above the “higher” ones for various reasons.

2. getting a spot in ANY competitive sub specialty is extremely extremely hard. Even if it is the “lowest” DO program.

3. Surgical sub specialty residency training sucks, and when people figure this out a lot of people bail. Very few are willing to go through hell to get a spot, and then go through hell to learn the trade.

I mean 115 AOA+4ACGME making 119 in 2018 to 107 all ACGME, now I think that’s pretty great considering most ACGME programs wouldn’t even consider a DO at that time.There’s going to be some bumps but I think it’s at least in the right direction especially since a lot of AOA programs in general decided not to switch over and closed their programs. So, that means there’s more pre-merger ACGME programs taking DOs. All those matches aren’t previous AOA programs like they would have been before. Just my opinion tho

There are also a lot more DOs applying now. So the proportion is further decreased. I hope it increases over time but looks like that hasn’t been the case.

Most DO schools will only ever have 1. The ENT and ophtho matches are straight brutal. This year there were ~40 applicants for 17 DO ENT spots, no DO matched MD ENT this year, and ultimately DOs lost one spot because one of the DO programs took an MD who is a faculty members kid.

it’s not unrealistic to estimate that from here on out you’ll have about 50 DO ENT applicants for ~15 spots.

I forgot if ortho was in that paper but I think the majority of DO went to former AOA ortho programs, I am sure that paper discussed derm, plastic, neurosurgery, ENT, 16 is only a frictional amount of total positions, you may want to take a look it is in the most recent issue of JOM, I misspelled the name they changed from JAOA to JOM

This will be me when I match community IM at home. Anyone who sees my (hopeful) match will be super unimpressed and never guess that a 250+ is behind it. Gotta make yourself happy though not others.

As a pre-med and OMS-I, I really wanted to be one of those matches with tons of hype on the DO match list thread. Then during third year I realized I loved clinic, family/free time, and shooting the crap with patients and the thought of getting paid for it. At that point stopped caring what people thought and have now matched FM. Super stoked about it, too!

great data! However I don’t think logically that will stay the same unless DOs just start self selecting out of applying to surgical subs.
At each one of these new schools there will be someone who wants ortho/ENT or whatever. Match rates will go down.

OSU had 2 go for ortho. Banked on the home program. Home program did not come through for them due to increased competition from outside schools.
