Based on the nrmp data released earlier the number of DO ortho and ent applicants was down slightly actually from last year, there was 5 less DO ortho and 1 less DO ent thus. Optho, neurosurgery and urology and integrated plastics all had more DO matches than last year. Apparently OSU didnot have anyone going for ortho. Hopefully the match rates stay the same for the competitive stuff as people self select out of competitive stuff..

great data! However I don’t think logically that will stay the same unless DOs just start self selecting out of applying to surgical subs.
At each one of these new schools there will be someone who wants ortho/ENT or whatever. Match rates will go down.

OSU had 2 go for ortho. Banked on the home program. Home program did not come through for them due to increased competition from outside schools.

Is it just me or are the IM matches weak this year lol like not bad but not great.
Great depends on the program. I chose mine to stay close to home. Not as I guess great as some would say that I had invited at but can still get whatever fellowship you want from since it’s a uni program. Not everyone wants a top program nor does it really mean you will get better training.

NRMP data says anesthesia had around a 50% match rate this year for DO seniors (268/513)....does this include people not ranking it as first choice, or was GAS just on some derm shi* this year?

Edit: i forgot about advanced spots, 69 matched to advanced spots so that bumps up the % to a more reasonable #

Most DO schools will only ever have 1. The ENT and ophtho matches are straight brutal. This year there were ~40 applicants for 17 DO ENT spots, no DO matched MD ENT this year, and ultimately DOs lost one spot because one of the DO programs took an MD who is a faculty members kid.

it’s not unrealistic to estimate that from here on out you’ll have about 50 DO ENT applicants for ~15 spots.

This year there were only 16 ENT spots (previous AOA) as Joplin pulled out of the match. There was 1 MD ENT match it was a student from LECOM @ West Virginia. But yes 1 spot was lost to an MD who had ties to a program @ UPMC - Hamot.

My understanding this includes all applicants including dual applicants (ie DO that applied anesthesia as a backup etc). I still suspect the match rate for anesthesia is gunna be rough this year for primary applicants but probably better than 50%

That UTSW EM match is also top tier. They usually only take 1 DO (of 24 residents in each class), but took 3 this year.

You wouldn’t be wrong if the number of students were staying stagnant. Someone get some real numbers on this but I remember our dean saying the class of 2021 had 2k more students applying to residency than the class of 2020 and the class of 2022 has 4k more than the class of 2020. The match rate for all specialties for DOs will continue to trend down, and the match rate for surgical sub specialties is going to be absolutely brutal. Match rate currently is like 40-60% for Surgical subs and will likely end up being 25-35% as school expansion booms.
I'm guessing it's because the top talent pool stays roughly the same but with more average/below average people joining in (because of the expansion) which is why the number of those who get into hard to get specialties is similar, but compared to the whole out of the DO population, seems decreased.

After all, only so many residency spots, and they get filled every year so adding more ppl doesn't mean more can match.

PM&R had 49/223 DO applicants who matched, I'm 100% sure it counts those who apply as backup (unless PM&R is the new derm lol)

Ah my source was incorrect. Didn’t know about WVU. I did hear about Joplins little stunt lol.

why did Joplin pull out??
They are only accredited for 5 spots, but they had a year where they took 2. So to take a resident this year they would have to have had 6 in the program. They petitioned the ACGME to allow them to take a resident this year, but it was turned down. They did not even let applicants know this was an issue until after many of them had auditioned and were making their rank list.

No 121 matched PGY2 positions for PMR, meaning 170 DOs matched PMR total this year.

Right before the market crash in 2008, it wasn't uncommon to get into MD schools with what are considered borderline DO stats today (at least holds true for many SUNY/CUNY MD programs in NY) - think 3.4/3.5 GPA with a MCAT equivalent to what 27-28 was on the old test.

I have a theory that the Great Recession is largely why medical school became very competitive in the 2010s.
Any sources on this? Really interesting

Have DOs matched Denver EM before?? Isn't that a top program that is cold to DOs? They require a bunch of money to rotate there as a DO as well.

Can't find the website of 2005-2006 averages for a lot of schools listed across the country but did many years back (saw some schools where you can get into a MD with a 23-25 MCAT!?! that are now 32+ averages converted to the old scale). It showed average cGPA/sGPA/MCAT for each school. The actual theory about Great Recession? Don't have any evidence honestly just my theory.
I'm curious if study resources have improved as well?

Have DOs matched Denver EM before?? Isn't that a top program that is cold to DOs? They require a bunch of money to rotate there as a DO as well.
They matched 2 DOs this year and before this year currently had 2-3 DOs in the EM program. I learned that the rotation fee is something instated by UColorado as an institution. The individual residency programs don't have anything to do with it and the program is open to taking DOs.

I think "Aerospace Fam Med" is Family Medicine/Flight Medicine

A lot of MD schools posted their 2021 match lists publicly after the match day on Friday. No DO schools post theirs yet. The only DO school match lists are unofficial and only collected from the match day virtual ceremonies. Do anyone know why?

Did anyone already mention the DO who matched Ortho at the University of Washington?
Yeah, @DNC127 mentioned that they were a baller applicant a few pages back

Yeah they were an awesome applicant! I would say top 20- 25 of the 500 applicants our program got. Interestingly enough of the the top 5 best applicants that applied to our program as non-rotators (think 10+ pubs and 250+ boards with amazing letters) 3 matched DO programs and 2 matched less prestigious MD which I suspect is exactly where they all wanted to be despite having more prestigious options.

This is why rank lists are fun but hard to interpret. There are so many factors that go into a rank list and at the end of the day for most I have talked to prestige is lower of importance.

Dead honest guys Rowans match this year was kinda disappointing. Jeff Philly IM was an impressive match but other than that super avg. Really impressed by some of these other DO matches though overall I think we broke glass ceiling at some major institutions
do you have more info on the other places they matched at?

Once I get a match list from someone in residency advising Ill have a better idea. So far the only other notable ones that stuck out to me were NYU and Georgetown Neuro, Columbia FM and Hopkins PMR.

That UTSW EM match is also top tier. They usually only take 1 DO (of 24 residents in each class), but took 3 this year.
Dude i just saw that! So studly. Correct me if im wrong but the denver EM also impressive-literally almost all MD (only 1 DO there right now)

Cool ortho matches I have seen this year and some limited insight I have

NYU - Great applicant, probably crushed their interview, a little surprised (in a good way) to see this because I know DOs who did research years at NYU last year and NYU told them that they won't interview DOs even if they do a research year haha
George Washington - Best DO applicant in the pool by far, persons app blew me away. Was swimming in MD interviews to the point of cancelling DO interviews allegedly
University of Washington - Did a sick research year, diverse, whole package
TCOM - at least 3 MD texas matches (2 at JPS and 1 texas tech)- TCOM sets you up best to match MD if that is your whole goal cause JPS and Texas tech DGAF if you are DO. I also know people who had interviews at UTSW and in Houston so texas is pretty DO friendly overall.
Hey, this is the DO that matched at GW! Thanks so much for this amazing compliment!! I did a research year at NYU last year and they originally told me they wouldn’t entertain DOs but somewhere along the line it appears they changed their minds! They interviewed me and the guy that matched there. I know him from doing an away with him and he’s an amazing person! Definitely a well deserved match! I ranked GW ahead of NYU because my fiancé matched at Walter Reed and I obviously wanted to be with him. (Doesn’t at all mean I would’ve matched at NYU had I ranked it the other way around lolol). Anyway, I went to CUSOM and am happy to help any rising ortho hopefuls with questions they may have. You can also check this years Reddit thread for my rank list rationale cuz I discussed a few DO ortho spots there and filled out a couple interview reviews. I also posted my number on the match results tab because I know how hard it is to go into this process sort of blind and wanna make sure others don’t have to do the same!

Denver health - EM, super sick match!

Dude those EM matches are insane. Cook county USC and henry ford? heck ya
It's Henry Ford - Allegiance campus. One of the worst programs in the country. They usually soap most of their spots.

We'll see more and more higher tier DO matches as higher tier MD applicants leave for specialties where they'll actually have a job after.

Which speciaties will leave you with no job after? Im just curious because I thought medicine is always in high demand, unless you only want to practice in major urban cities, which can be difficult to find a job for any specialty. Excuse me if I have misunderstood your statement.

EM is in a bad place right now with graduating residents unable to find jobs, and is only getting worse considering the number of spots available grew by 50% in the last 5 years.

Thank you for being available to help those applying in the future.

As said in my original post to those reading, this is the person’s app you want to emulate. I personally read nearly 500 apps this year (150 ish DO and 300-350 MD) including their letters and personal statements because 1. I am psychotic and 2. want to go into academics so I care about this stuff and the GW ortho app reigns supreme over all the DO apps and I can’t think of an MD app that would be better either.

Rad onc, path, and now EM are fields where it is currently difficult to find any sort of a decent job.

Yes, your theory is definitely valid. Similar to what the great and powerful Oz, err, @Goro always says, as the economy goes down, applications to academia go up. Best way to get out of a bad economy is to jump back into school and out of the job market, especially if you know doing so will pay dividends down the line.

Which is quite odd advice, know a handful of people who either got laid off during that time or were underemployed. Everyone eventually got back onto their feet, a few who make way more than most doctors I know. 2008-2010 was a dark time for many white-collar adults with college degrees. They worked their butt off/networked to better jobs without going into education debt.

Oh for sure there are ways to recover from a bad economy without completely changing careers/going to medical school. Clearly the vast majority of the population doesn't do that (nor even gets the opportunity to do so), but there tend to be upticks in application numbers following economic recessions (however I think this past year with COVID was an anomaly with there being fewer applications).

Anecdotal, but I can offer support for your initial theory as well. As a teenager during that time, I watched my parents either both be unemployed, or one of them work their butt off 20 hours a day to provide for our family and barely make ends meet. Although I was already interested in science and medicine and exploring this path once beyond high school, I was more so motivated after watching my dad struggle in corporate life.

Back in the boomer days anyone could get into Med school. Contrary to what they say it wasn’t uphill both ways more like anything better than average = doctor which you can tell by many of the boomer docs practice abilities (not all but many just so out of date)

76% match rate. Pretty solid considering how popular it's becoming.
170/249 applicants = 68% match rate for DOs applying PM&R (70% if you include the peds PM&R matches). Last year it was an 80% match rate for DOs. Some dual apply though.

84% match rate for MDs this year

Denver is always impressive but they currently have 2 DOs in their program and took 2 DOs this year.

The job market is bad but I don’t think it would be evident in terms of residency competitiveness just yet, maybe next year or the year after but the 4th years who were applying didn’t really know the job market was that bad or going to be that bad when they applied last year, I doubt that many people would completely change their specialty that they applied into/got letters for etc at the very last second. EM is still relatively competitive, it might change next year and the years after as people realize this problem.

No, because they have emergency departments just about everywhere. You might have to take a job in a place you don’t like, but that’s better than no job at all (maybe not to some idiots)
