In the email that RW sent us with a list of the undergrads everyone went to, there are 100 schools for people... meaning there are 100 ppl. So I don't think the class was still overcommitted.

On a slightly unrelated note, for our current M1's, I got an e-mail about parking permits today. Where are we supposed to park? Please don't tell me I have to spend over $600 on a parking permit for the year. 🙁

The parking permits for med students are like $150 or something. We get a better deal than the grad students, luckily. Parking sucks though. First years have to park in PG3, which is a good 10 minute walk from classes... you can take the bus, which comes pretty frequently in the mornings, but that takes like 10 minutes too. You can park closer to campus on weekends or after like 9 pm. Second years get to park in PG2, which is connected to the hospital - yay!

PG3 is not bad, really. Anyway, it's nice to get outside and away from studying every once in awhile (j/k). Unfortunately, 2nd year is the only year we get to park in PG2 (the one attached to the hospital). All other years, including 4th year, you must park in PG3. Some of us have tried to lobby for 4th years to park in the hospital deck again, but to no avail.

Also, while we do have that dreadful 10 minute walk, we have it better than the students in other programs... their parking lots (not decks) are about 1.5 miles away, and when they miss the bus, it's about 20 minutes before the next one shows up.

And I agree... the $150 is good, and one of our recent grads is responsible for that. My 2nd year, permits were $575, but we've got some additional funding that helps defray the costs for now.

It's really NOT that bad, but it's kind of annoying that you have to leave like 20-30 mins before you have to be at school when you live less than 10 mins away. Before I got here, I was used to living like a 5 min walk from school.

Hey guys, for those of you who haven't yet registered your Duke net ID or email, here is the email we got today about parking:

This is a message from Duke Parking and Transportation Services.

On-line parking permit sales for Graduate and Professional students begin at 10:00 am on Monday, June 18. If you plan to purchase a parking permit please select the Student link under "Parking at Duke" for important information and a link to the registration site. Your NetID and password are required to enter the site. On-line registration ends at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 3.

Student permit charges are handled through the Bursar's Office.

Graduate students will be allowed to renew their current permits through August 3. Permit eligibility for Professional Students has been coordinated through the respective schools.

Certain permit types are not renewable using the on-line system. If you hold a Handicap(AMB) or special permit, you will find the associated guidelines at parking.duke.edu.

If you live off campus and would like to participate in a rideshare or carpool, please let us know by contacting us at [email protected].

You may update your permit mailing address, vehicle information or waiting list choices by visiting parking.duke.edu between June 18 and August 3.

If you do not plan to park a vehicle at Duke during the 07-08 academic year, please disregard this message.

Several of you have PMed me asking for instructions on how to set up the DukeMed email in a third party client, so here's a quick guide for what I did to get it to work in Outlook 2007... I can't help out with the other clients, but hopefully you can adapt these instructions, server addresses, and port numbers to work with other clients:

1. Open Outlook.
2. Go to Tools>Account Settings
3. Click on "New"
4. Leave "Microsoft, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP" selected
5. Hit next.
6. Type your name besidde name, type your Duke email address in the form of abc##@duke.edu where ABC are your initials and ## are the numbers.
7. Then type in your password for your net ID.
8. Select "Manually configure server settings". Hit next.
9. Leave "Internet E-mail" selected. Hit next.
10. Type in your name and email address as before. Under account type you can select POP3 or IMAP. With POP3 you can download your email to your client off the server and leave the messages on the server for 10 days so you can still access them via the email when you need them in the short-term. This is the protocol I personally prefer and use. You could also select IMAP which doesn't download the messages to your computer - it leaves the messages on the server and synchronizes your mail folders with what is found on the Duke webmail site. You can select either.
11. Under incoming mail server, whether you chose POP3 or IMAP, type in imap.duke.edu
12. Under outgoing mail server (SMTP), type in smtp.duke.edu
13. Under logon information, type in your Dukenet ID user name and password and click remember password.
14. Select require logon using Secure Password Authentication.
15. To the right, click on "More settings".
16. Under the general tab, give your account a unique name to identify it from other accounts (Gmail, undergrad mail, etc) that you may want to bring into this client.
17. Under the outgoing server tab, select the "My outgoing server (SMTP requies authentication" button. Make sure the "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected.
18. Under the advanced tab, use 995 as your incoming server (POP3) port number and select "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
19. Use 465 as your outgoing server (SMTP) port number and select "SSL" under the "Use the following type of encrypted connection:" prompt. This part is optional for POP3 and is what I personally do -- Below, click beside "Leave a copy of messages on the server" then click on "Remove from server after 10 days".
20. Hit "OK" to close the window.
21. Click on Test Account Settings - it will log onto your mail server and also send a test message. If everything checks out, you will get two "completed" status updates.

Feel free to message me if I've made an error in these instructions.

I was actually wanting to carpool as well. I'm down for whatever. Plus, if I have to carpool with someone, then I think that might make me actually get up and be on time and go to class and all that biznass...

There were some who carpooled my first year, and it's not a bad idea. Duke has actually done a good job with giving incentives for this. Read about the carpooling permits when you register for parking.

Another option, if you're so inclined, is to get a moped or even bike to school and you can purchase the carpooling permit. You get a certain number of deck passes that actually let you park in the deck attached to Duke South. You can park pretty close to class with your bike then use deck passes on the rainy days. One of my classmates is doing it this year and swears by it. He's also paying about $2 per week for gas.

Although, even if you're planning on carpooling, I would highly recommend just getting your own parking pass and carpooling at your convenience to save on gas, etc. I'm pretty sure they're only going to be $150 again, even though the site says $600, and it's a pain to not have your own pass b/c some days you'll want to stay late, or go back to campus to study or go to the gym, or you'll have different hours some days b/c of practice course, etc. And you pretty much can't park on campus without a parking pass.

I definitely agree with diosa. Your schedule might be similar at the beginning of the year but things quickly change. $150 is nothing compared to all the tuition costs.

Yeah everyone else has to pay $600 to park in PG3, but a couple of years ago, some med students convinced the parking office to give us a discount, so we only pay $140.

Actually, the $150 dollars or so was the going rate for med students for many years, but all of a sudden a few years back there was some sort of funding loss and the permit subsidy disappeared, making the cost jump to ~$600. A number of students from my class negotiated with members of the administration to find alternate funding, and thanks to them the cost went back down to $150 or so.

Nope, it's PG3 or bust. I currently have a central parking pass that I bummed off a graduating senior, but PG3 is the only option you can buy. There are frequent buses, so it really isn't a big deal.

After consulting yahoo maps, the walk won't be too bad. Assuming there's a shortcut through the medical center entrance on Erwin, the walk is about half a mile.

I'm pretty sure Dr. Adams substituted for my molecular biology class when Dr. Bridgewater was gone. He's a really cool guy!

I would definitely have done the independent study program if I had gone to OSU, but that's because I don't learn well in class. In fact, I'll probably try to do "independent study" at Duke through the online streaming. Anybody else planning on doing that?

Haha, that is good to hear that others are like me, J.D. and Pagemma - I'm planning on doing a lot of the "home-study" course myself at Duke. It took me forever during undergrad to get over the guilt of not going to class until I realized that if I spent the same amount of time just studying the online lecture notes and reviewing I'd be a lot farther ahead. I don't know - there's just something about lecture... after 17 years of going to class, my brain just automatically goes into shutdown mode. I didn't go to biochemistry all senior year and it turned out fine.

Ryan, I have faith something will work out for you in the end - we never know what's planned for us, and sometimes the way things end up are far better than we had ever hoped.
