I still really want to go there, but now it's more waiting. Come on Good Karma, come my way!!!

I hope this info helps you guys, I live in Charlotte by the way.

What happened with the rest of you?

Have a great weekend,
franklinthedog

Awww, Franklin!!! Keep your chin up-- it's definetly not over for you yet.
:luck::luck::luck::luck:

I got Wlisted also. I'm gonna let 'em wait till the 28th to get my "no thanks" letter.

Thanks Sweet Tea and ngtah00! I'm not gonna give up now, and I still have something to look forward to. Good luck to all on the WL.

still no word....am i the only one without an answer yet? My guess is that I'll be waitlisted too....Hey franklin, i live in charlotte too...What part of charlotte do you live in (send me a pm)..

Hey gang I am in San Francisco at the American Urological Association international meeting right now but my mom faxed over the letter stating that I was wait listed. My heart goes out to all who applied to ECU at it is a very long and draining process. This is my 4th year applying so hopefully it will pay off 🙂

*hugs to all*

I got my letter on Saturday saying that I was waitlisted as well. Who knows what they were looking for! Funny because I was around the average for everything at UNC medical school and I got in there no problem and I was above all of ECU's averages and got waitlisted! Whatever...I will be happy to send my rejection letter to them with a little note attatched about making us wait so long!!!

I think I was the only one rejected right after Christmas. I suppose that's better than getting the thin envelope just before Christmas...

Good luck to everyone on ECU's waitlist!

In this last batch of letters sent out by ECU did anyone get accepted??? Or just all waitlists??

Nah Swipes, I was with you in that after Christmas reject batch at ECU....bah...ECU is a great school, good luck to everyone going there/trying to get in.

There are a lot of things that you have to keep in mind when applying to ECU in terms of averages. Just remember that ECU is all about finding students to fit with their mission and legislative charter, not as concerned with numbers with other schools. It Doesn't seem to hurt us in terms of USMLE or match. But overall think about this...

Our class size is 72... Half of those will be male and half female. So right there you are down to 36.. Of those 36 you can imagine that in rightfully keeping with the mission of the school that 6-8 will be minorites. So you are down to 28.. Of those 28 a few of them will have connections or know someone. So there really is a limited number of slots for incoming students who aren't minority or "know" someone. Of the people in my class that are non-minority and don't know someone, there isn't a single person that scored below a 30 on the MCAT. So just because the "averages" you see on whatever book or site say one thing, don't automatically assume that you're overly qualified.

Interesting info.

that explains a lot.

I recently spoke with UNC and believe their waitlist is smaller than ECU.

For ECU--BJ recently said that they offer over 100 WL spots of which 70 or so people accept (i.e. say yes, put me on the waitlist). Of those 70 (approx number here), they usually accept anywhere from 3-15 people/year.

Now, UNC...I have no idea how many people are offered or accept their waitlist. I have heard of people in the past on SDN getting in off the UNC WL though. Per the adm office at UNC, they say the list isn't all that big. Someone in this thread said they thought the UNC WL is 40 people. Who knows?? I do know that their are two separate lists, one in-state and one out-of-state. Anyone else know anything more specific about UNC?

Either school would be awesome, I hope some/all of us hear good news soon.

Does anyone know where they are on either WL? I don't....

Good luck!

Wow, ECU has a waitlist the size of their incoming class almost!

In an earlier thread I stated that there was 40 on the waitlist. It is my understanding that it is around this number of the people that send back their letter stating they want to remain on the list. I was informed that each sub-committee (5 total) picks around 10-15 candidates max that they would like to see on the waitlist. After this point I have no idea what Dr. Hoole does. I'm not even sure that if the sub-committee wants to waitlist you whether that guarantees you will be sent a waitlist letter. From the Admissions Office I was told that around half of the waitlist came off last year. I'm sure it varies from year to year. I hope this helps for any one waiting for UNC. Also, does anyone know if UNC or ECU have an alternate list and a waitlist or are they the same thing? In other threads people posted how some schools have an alternate list and a waitlist...the waitlist being the better of the two.

Thanks GuamGuy. I'm no adm committe member, but I think that for ECU and UNC waitlist and alternate list are synonymous. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

And your logic about each subcommitte making recommendations makes sense, as I was told the same thing by a UNC staff member. Let's hope it's only 10 people recommended * 5 sub committees = 50 waitlist offers to Dr. Hoole, who then axes ~ 10 leaving us with 40. Then let's hope they take mostly in-state students from that, esp those who post frequently on SDN!

Good luck!

Officially withdrew from unc today. sniff. sniff. but it's time to move on after 5 yrs in chapel hill.

best of luck to the ppl on the wl.

thanks man, that's awesome! Best of luck to you, where are you going instead? Pitt?

Thanks franklin...

I will be heading to Pitt. I know that it sounds silly since it's actually not as nice as UNC, but I feel that the life experience that I gain there might outweigh the savings of going to unc.

Best of luck to all of you...

Ian

^ OMG!! My friend right now is deciding between UNC and PITT!! If he goes to PITT, I'll get you his contact info!

That really gives me that sickening, "You got a snowball's chance in hell" type of feeling! Best of wishes to those on the WL at ECU. Mind and body strong grasshoppers.

seriously, i can't take this anymore.

😎

I hear you eminem and Richie, hanging out in this thread is getting old. We need to move on over to the accepted thread! I'm sure some of you have thought about the below, so what are your opinions?

UNC....if we were to get in off their waitlist, will it be a phone call? I think yes. When do the rest of you think they will start? My guess is they will start calling some lucky people on Tuesday.

ECU...for ECU I think they'll mail some more acceptances out on Wednesday, that seems to be their mailing day.

By the way, I'm guessing that for each school there will be a max of 5-10 people getting such offers...As always, good luck.

I hope ya'll get in, you've been camping out on this thread for a very long time 😉 The prayers are out for us and now I am gonna goto sleep. I've been playing with this new Palm Tungsten T3 to long. Got a bunch of medical software on it already. Fear the pimpage on rounds :scared:

👍 night guys.

UNC's waitlist started moving on Friday. Good luck to all of you.

😱
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Come on UNC, call me up.

Since you got in off the waitlist at UNC let us ask a few questions:

1. when did they call you? am? pm?
2. when was your waitlist letter dated?
3. did you send any letters?
4. instate? out of state?

Congratulations at getting into UNC. Its my dream.

PS have you decided to attend UNC?

Congrats hnaftel!!!!!!!

good questions eminem. Answers to which WE WOULD REALLY LIKE, thanks in advance hnaftel.

Thanks for the congrats. I will definitely be attending UNC. So....

1. They called at noon.
2. My waitlist letter was dated 4/5.
3. I sent a LOI shortly after.
4. Instate

Best of luck to all of you.

thanks hnaftel!!

I think this means that the waitlist letters were sent out in waves. Hnaftel got a first wave WL letter, dated 4/5... Meaning if there are approx 40ish people on the WL, he/she was probably top 10 out of 40 (good job by the way)...

Hence, let's look at it in tiers. They sent out 4 waves (maybe approx 10 each) I think...

1--4/5
2--4/13
3--4/21
4--4/30??(based on twinklz post of receiving a WL letter week of 5/6)

So, if you're within the top 2 or 3, you have a good shot depending on a.) where you are within that group and b.) how many people say no thanks UNC

Anyway, that's the best I can come up with...Good luck, I'm going back to my room and cry until some lets me in!

Franklin,

I agree with your analysis. Well, mine was on 5/13 like yours, I believe.

I think because the list was moving pre May 15, that is a good sign.

BTW, What is your first choice?

eminemunc,

My first choice is definitely whoever takes me first. They're both great schools...I would have no problem only going to the first that one that takes me (what a great position that would be)!

I hope we hear good news, and soon.

PS. For inspiration, look up prior years' waitlist threads, some people still get in even in august.

Sorry to wreck your theory, franklin, but I just got off the waitlist (didn't send my blasted notice in quick enough). Now I actually have to make a decision about Wake vs. UNC.

not the first time my theories based on total conjecture have been wrong...

Congrats twinklz, that's awesome! Good luck with your decision.

franklin

congrats twinklz. 🙂

i think i am going to cry.

deciding between unc and wfu is an awesome position to be in! congrats!!!

Now that exam week at UNC is over... I have a lot more time on my hands... so if any of you guys have any questions about UNC, please post to the forum or PM me. Good luck to all of you who are on the waitlist. all of you sdners deserve to get in!

^Super! Can you tell me how the year is divided up? Also, what kind and how long are your vacations? Do you have two or three semesters? Thanks!!

Hey Demon,

I take it from your question that you want to know how our first year is divided up... if not, let me know, and i'll fix that!

the first year is divided into 2 semesters... but classes start and end in the middle of the semester...

so for your first semester, you have 8 classes... Biochemistry, cell biology, molec bio/genetics, human anatomy/embryology, PCI, Intro. to clinical medicine, Immunology, social medicine.

(now the PCI class is a yuppie class, you learn how to use your computer for searching research databases... )

your second semester has these following classes - physiology, molec biology/virology, histology, neurobiology, intro to pathology, social medicine, intro to medicine...

the intro to med and the social med classes are year long... the intro to med class is really cool and in your first year, you learn to interview patients and conduct a complete physical exam.

For your vacations, you have fall break sometime in october that's around 2.5 days off... you have spring break, that's around 1 wk off... and you have christmas break which is around 2.5-3 wks long... you also have these two weeks called "community week"... this is where you work in a doctors office and learn what it is you are taught in the intro to clinical med class. the community weeks are fun for most all students because they get to get away from studies and interact with patients!

now our exams ended on may 19... you technically have the whole summer off - until august 11 or so. some people choose research, others choose to travel abroad, others choose to do research abroad... and some relax away!!

I know you had a really simple question... but this is more detail, just in case!!
~heel

Heelshmeel,

Wow, 8 classes in the first semester!?! I have five classes now and I thought that was a heavy load!

What do you mean classes start and end in the middle of the semester? Does that mean the classes are only a few weeks long?

I'm glad to know the summer you get off, that sounds awesome! Thanks so much for the details!!!

Hey demondecon,

Yeah, you have 8 classes in your first semester.... but it wont be all that terrible... here's what I mean by the classes starting and ending the middle of the semester:

Take PCI and Cell biology for example. both classes start near the beginning of the semester (in August)... and both end in October... when those classes end, you'll then start Immunology. Does that make sense? Btw, not all those classes are hard core - cell bio for example is a very very easy class (along with PCI, Social Medicine)... you should have no problem dealing with the classes - but I know, it does sound like a lot to learn when you first hear about it!

So, yes, some of the classes are only 6-9 weeks long... other classes (such as Anatomy/embryology, biochemistry, social medicine, intro to clin medicine) will take the entire semester.

hope this helps you,
~heel

Oh, okay! That makes sense now! That doesn't sound too bad now, 🙂

Just wanted to say that the ECU waitlist is moving. 3 students that are doing the summer program at Brody got taken off the waitlist today. So it moving for all those waiting.

ECU Med 07

Last year, UNC admitted someone the week classes started off the waitlist. Don't give up hope.
