Edward Via - Carolina Campus (VCOM-CC) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

Yeah honestly everyone that did not hear something within a few weeks to a few months at the latest should have been emailing or calling. I called and emailed every single school multiple times. Drove them crazy most likely asking about my application, but I got interviews at all but one and acceptances. Put yourself out there if not this year, next.

I 100% agree with this. I did the same thing. Gotta show that you want it!

Oh I have been in contact with them. They keep telling me my application is still under review for a secondary... just seems very strange.

In that case, just keep in touch with them and be patient. The cycle is long!

Hey guys, interviewing here tomorrow. Any last words of advice?

Be yourself, know all the basics (why VCOM, why DO, why medicine), and know your application. The faculty and student body are so welcoming - it's like no other place! Good luck 🙂

Hey guys, long time lerker. Just have a quick question. After the interview, did any of you do anything after wards (other than writing a thank you letter to the interviewers) in order to help the chances? I know some schools like letters of incentive or things like that. I just want to make sure everything is in order while they make the decision. Thanks!

No letter of intent, I only wrote thank you's to everyone I met 🙂

Do you havce the link to the portal login by chance? I can't seem to find the right page

I never even thought about writing anything personally I feel it's their job to interview me and for me to impress them. I would find a thank you from every potential student I saw slightly annoying, but I see how it could have some value if you do it. I don't know if in the end it really helps your chances. Hope you got good news though.

Thanks! but I actually will know this Friday coming up so I'm kinda nervous. And yeah, I was always told to write a thank you letter almost immediately after the interview to everyone that interviewed me. I know many people that also interviewed at schools and also did the letter thing. But yeah I would agree with you about it being annoying since the content of the letter has to be relatively generic because there is only so much you know about the person or have experienced in the last ~5 hours.

Every ADCOM I've spoken with says a personalized thank you letter is a big deal. They like to see it, and it goes in your admissions file. I couldn't imagine not sending one.

Every letter I wrote was very specific to my interviewer. I'd ask them questions about them during my interview, observe things in their offices and comment on them. Then, that gets them talking and gives me more to write about so it isn't just a generic thank you. If I were an ADCOM, I would appreciate that kind of effort.

Has anyone received pre-interview rejections in awhile? Or do they just do silent rejections? Submitted my secondary awhile back and just wondering if no word is a bad sign..

Accepted folks, CONGRATS!!! We are all so excited! Don't forget to join the fb group

@NotLupus0706 and @doctorinthehouse_ I recently checked the portal to find out that I've an II. I am debating if I should attend so late in the cycle.
Do you know if it is a trip worth making at this point? I'm sitting on two waitlists, so maybe third time's the charm?!

Honestly I don't know whether the class is full or not. However, if this is a school you LOVE then I would absolutely attend. Wait list is not an acceptance so I'd go to it for sure! Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you

I definitely would, just interviewed on the 8th and got accepted so anything is possible.

I've decided to interview next week. Did you guys get an email confirming your II? I didn't yet. I hope I don't get kicked out for coming to the interview without receiving an II email or call 😛

Haha I never got a call or email about the invite. Just an email confirming like a day or two before.

Welp. Got the axe today. Good luck to those who have advanced. Godspeed.

Same. Rejection email received today (complete 1/28). Good luck everyone!

Hey, I am still waiting for an interview and was just wondering when did you turn in all your stuff? I had my secondary turned in 2-29-16. I emailed them a week later and they told me they hadn't received my MCAT score from AACOMAS so then I sent them a screen shot. They then told me that they would start doing interviews in April.

I submitted my secondary on a Wednesday and received a complete email the very next morning, but it seems like this time frame has varied widely for applicants (maybe they just happened to meet that Thursday). It sounds like it even took months for some people to receive a complete email. Does that answer what you're asking? Good luck, hope you hear something soon!

They've been doing interviews since October, idk if it's wait list now or not though.

Oh, yeah I got a "completed" email from VCOM after submitting my secondary application confirming everything was in order, but I can't figure why in the world it is taking so long to review my application. It may depend on the school, I am trying to get into the Carolina campus and maybe they have a different time table as opposed to the two other campuses. In any event I did email VCOM today and they replied by saying that the Applications Director was reviewing my application and I should know something soon. She also said that if I get a phone call it will be in regards to setting up an interview and an email would be more or less a rejection. So, I take from that "phone call good" and "email bad!" All I know is that in my opinion I have a strong application (3.5 science gpa, 10 years of medicine experience, countless hours of shadowing D.O.'s, and 2 DO doctors of reference) with the exception of a less than stellar MCAT. Needless to say if I don't get an interview I will be very disappointed and a little at a loss for words...

Sending in a secondary on February 26th is very late in the game. Most schools have a lot of their class filled at this point. In response to it taking long to hear back, I had a lot of my applications complete in October and still have not heard back from many schools. I have had three interviews and 15 silences. So it is not uncommon to have not heard back yet. Additionally, last year when I applied (2014-2015 cycle), I was complete with everything (secondaries and all) by August. 3.8 GPA. Excellent LORs, ECs, etc. Lowish but not awful MCAT. I did not get a single interview and was denied to 22 schools. The process is brutal. The competition is intense. You can't expect to get an interview with any stats, even a 4.0 and 520.

Wow, that is brutal! Was there some kind of glaring hole in your application to get 22 rejections? Also, what did you do differently on the next application process/year to gain your admission? I will tell you though that I had no idea that you could even send in your application so early to medical school unless you were on some kind of "early enrollment/admission pathway." I know they say send in your stuff early as you can but I was thinking like a month out or something, my fault entirely for not researching the matter more closely. But I would have already had all of my stuff submitted if it wasn't for AACOMS dicking around with my transcripts and not letting me know anything about it! No emails, no messages on their website nothing. I finally had to call them to ask what was the hold up and they were like well we have all of your transcripts but we just haven't filed it!! And on top of that they took another five weeks to process my file!! Thank God I started this process in November of last year! Of course that sounds about right, only with my luck... 😵 Anyway, after working with doctors for so many years and knowing what it takes to provide good patient care, I guess I will be a little taken back if I don't at the very least get an interview.

Wait listed this morning. Hoping for some movement!

Can anyone speak to how many people are offered a spot in the next year's class (the class of 2021 for us instead of 2020) off the wait list? Part of my email said this: "In the event we do not experience enough movement in the class to proceed with admission for this year, your application will be evaluated regarding early admission to the Class of 2021."
