FlexMed 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have an idea of the popularity of the program this year? Same as previous or more applications?

I don't know anything about the actual reported numbers, but the applicant has probably grown since last year. At least from what I've checked out, the program has slowly been gaining applicants. I could just be confusing it with another early application program though.

Rejected! Sorry to ruin the parade of acceptances but I felt like posting about my rejection was something that I should do for future applicants who stalk previous year's threads hahaha (no shame I've done it myself). I called their office for clarification but they are very strict on not giving personal feedback and critique about specific applications. The decision was definitely a shocker since I had an amazing interview experience but I was definitely preparing myself for it anyways. BTW, for this round of Flexmed applications, 760 applied, 170 got interviews of which 54 were accepted. Best of luck to those accepted and rejected!

I interviewed for FlexMed on Tuesday! It was such a great experience. To answer some questions, decisions will come out the first week of June. No chance of hearing back earlier. They're looking to accept 30-40 students. ~750 applied and ~150 will get invited to interview. At the interview we were given folders with information and fin aid information was in there, though I have not yet looked through it.

So I'm going to amend what I said earlier since this is what I found from the posts from previous years. Two year difference only seemed to see an increase in acceptances (again, I don't know anything about the number of applicants this cycle).

Does anyone else have 3 recommendations in but it doesn't say 100% when you go to the "application" section to see the application progress?

I have been reading this thread for awhile but this is my first post. Have they ever sent out interviews this early?! I am extremely nervous now!!!!!

For reference, the first responses to threads from previous years about receiving interviews were first seen on February 15th, 18th, and 28th. I'm also an applicant, so I don't actually know exactly what's going on. However, it's probably safe to say that anyone viewing this thread should relax for at least another two weeks.

Yeah I agree! I would wait until the time they actually said in the email and not worry too much about receiving an invite (for now)...we already have classes to worry about without added stress for an interview. 👍

I agree with @yellowranger it seems awfully early for them to be sending interview invites out.

I don't mean to say they haven't sent out interview invites, more that people shouldn't be concerned if they haven't gotten one yet.

has anyone submitted everything but the application still says 94% complete?

Nope. Have all your letters of recommendation come in? Have you uploaded a copy of your fall transcript? Those are the only 2 things I can think of that would cause that.

has anyone submitted everything but the application still says 94% complete?
Go to Status tab and see what is incomplete. for me, only thing it says incomplete is Spring Transcript, which says required for Interviewed applicant. however my application says 100% complete.

Yeah mine does. Did you have more than 3 recommendations but only 3 filled it out? I think that’s the case with mine.

ya for me it only says the spring transcript is missing...I guess ill give it a little more time to update

That happened with me too. I had 4 recommenders and only 3 send them in, but my application was still 100% complete.

What type of universities is everyone applying from? I'm from a flagship state university.

Im top 15 USNWR but I am very curious how much it matters where you apply from?

I’m from a small private health sciences college.

top public university! 🙂 and idk if it matters where you come from but since some people were not necessarily accepted from HYP or any other really great private school I'm being very optimistic (trying to be at least). For some reason I'm also strangely calm.

Does anyone know if our application status will change from complete to "in screening" when they actually start reviewing it?

From what I've read (see: previous FlexMed threads) HuMed was pretty blatant in its favoritism for Ivy's, but FlexMed is supposed to not be as nitpicky. I don't doubt that it matters where you apply from, but it's probably not a huge deal. I could, however, be totally wrong and biased.

Go to UCLA. I saw that someone had already gotten an interview invitation. Has anyone else been contacted yet?

FYI: The average GPA of acceptees, according to a pamphlet from I think Cincinnati said around a 3.8. It was one of those pamphlets pre-health departments give out to kids who are considering applying, so I can't find it now but it was floating around as a .pdf on google.

When I saw that I realized I was applying for the experience lol. If I can get an interview, I'll call that a win.

Is there a link to look at this brochure? Jw

I can't find it on google at the moment but I remember seeing it and thinking, well, I can get a fee waiver so I might as well apply and try to get as much out of it as I can! It said "the average GPA of successful applicants" which I'm assuming can only mean applicants from their school. So if you go to a school with grade deflation, or with more diverse backgrounds that might have significant barriers to education (I'm disabled and spend collectively about 2 weeks of each term in the hospital) that average may not apply to your school or you specifically.

Given how much space they give you to talk about extenuating circumstances, I'd assume they are at least a little flexible. No pun intended.

I go to a flagship state school, but submitted the app on the 16th. If I hear it's going to be so late🙁

Essentially the same for me. Not really expecting much, but an interview would be nice!

It’s ok me too! Try to be optimistic! 🙂 I think that even if I don’t get anything it was a great experience and all it means you know what to do for the next round.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the decision and how it reflects on me. I feel good about what I'm putting together in college and I think anyone who considers applying to FlexMed with competitive stats will be fine in the future. FlexMed would be totally amazing though. I was hoping to use it to do a double social science major and do some public health work.

anyone think that we might get some interviews sent out later this upcoming week?

They started coming out Feb 15 last year so maybe some will come out this Wednesday...

I was thinking the same thing. Time will tell! Honestly though I’ve been so focused on my upcoming orgo 2 exam...

Nope, not yet.

Nothing yet here either :pompous: I think they started coming out on the 18th in 2016, so we might have a little more waiting to do!

The only thing I got was an email from another program lol, almost had a heart attack when I saw "Med-admissions" pop up on my phone.

Once again for reference, previous years have seen the first wave of interview invites Feb 15th, 18th, and 28th. Many interviews have been granted much later, afaik even April. Even if you don't get a first wave invite, I wouldn't worry - we're all trying our best! I was recently reminded to not worry too much about this by a friend who would scream "Panic Stress Panic" at me when we were in high school during stressful situations to remind me not to take things too seriously.

100% agree. I’m just focusing on school at this point since that’s all I can control 🙂

Does anyone know how much of an impact applying late will have on admission chances?

Oh yellowranger was that email about the Florida MHP email lmfao? cuz i had the same response

yeh it scared me

Isnt MHP primarily for UF students largely and remaining ones for Resident of Florida? (Even though they claim they will consider every one from all states).

Dunno anything about the preference, but I can remember some numbers put up as well as the demographic of the current MHP class. There were some 140 applicants last year, with 133 or so getting secondaries (some small number omitted likely due to GPA barrier which has been added in this year), and there were 40 interviews granted with 14-18 acceptances. The current class consists of at least 2 students from out of state (UVA and UCLA), the rest are Florida students as far as I remember. I was also curious about this so I'm glad I found some numbers. Dunno if it has anything to do with Florida preference or not. I just doubt that there are as many OOS applicants from USNWR Top 15 since UF isn't as prestigious as a program like Icahn
