Future WW Games

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh whoops, I think I misread someone pointing out the underwear game would start that day as a lack of interest

I have a roommate night scheduled with my roommates tomorrow, so could probably only do an afternoon-ish MST game. I have a small idea for sudden death bullet rounds which would be easier for people to join or step out of periodically without affecting play which may be easier to experiment with tomorrow if you'd still like to give it the old college try tomorrow
I'm IN

otherwise I can maybe also run one tomorrow and/or Sunday, but it's been a little while since I have played

K we’re getting back into NKA which is a pet peeve of mine

Looks like I’ve got my “thing” like AM does with convert hunting

Reasons why ppl live or don’t to endgame is highly variable and varies game to game

I don’t like the suggestion that living to end game is some evidence of sucking it

I just think about how I plan my endgames when I'm wolfing by myself and it's mostly just the people I have the most fun sparring against. Sometimes even people who I think might catch me. I like the challenge.

I wanna catch you :naughty:

Okay! I'll get a sign up thread started shortly. Doesn't matter to me how many people play but it will probably be easiest on my end if we cap it at 15

I've got a speed game in the works but probably can't run it until next weekend
How speedy we talking about?

Tag me in any future speed games, if they're like a 1 evening game or a weekend game thing. I think that's the perfect duration for me to get my WW fix but not need to spend dozens of hours and read thousands of posts.

Should be roughly 15 minutes for information cycle and 15-20 minutes for lynch. The way I'm running this game is unusual so that would actually be the turnaround for the whole game, with the idea that we could play multiple successive games throughout the day without anybody needing to stick around for the whole evening

...talk of Aes Sedai on another thread has me excited again about running Wheel of Time.

Can I make a very early reservation for early June for that? (@Mad Jack @LadyOtheFarm you still in as co-mods for that?)

I also am thinking of maybe running it in the Lounge, of all places...we shall see. I'd like it to be a large format game for #reasons.
Yes! I am trying to get over my depressed self and do more happy social things so yes, yes please, let's do this awesome thing, message me and let's do this thing!

Yeah. Here. Or, at least to mod with someone in the lounge who has played/modded there. You gotta have credentials, man. And it's kind of like how people don't just jump into modding here without playing first.

Well I wish you luck with that lol We have played games off-site before (I believe Rocky Horror was hosted on MU) so that's another option.
Was me if someone had questions.

Bumping these again for new players who may soon be looking into modding games, I certainly don't 100% agree with everything here, but they are good jumping off points and there is a lot of value in the points discussed. I probably won't be playing much in the near future because of the time commitment, I think after modding and playing while in school I've determined @Karabiner13 is right and it's actually a bit more feasible for me to mod while busy as long as the game is a reasonable size. I'm happy to consult on game designs for anyone that needs another set of eyes - though I would recommend getting two sets if you can, and really the best thing is to have someone actually available throughout the entire design and game running process.

Category:Modding Articles - MafiaWiki

Personally, I decided I needed to be able to read most of these articles, and actually understand them, before I would really be ready to mod without doing something to totally piss everyone off. That was like a year ago, and when I started reading, I figured out that I had a lot more to learn about just playing the game, and I didn't finish reading about how to mod. If I ever get through all the mafia articles on both playing and modding, then I just might.

Vi's Review Checklist!
  • Is there any way, no matter how unlikely, that this game can be "broken" (made so that one faction is highly unlikely to win even with optimal play)?
  • Is there any way, no matter how unlikely, that this will go to a Kingmaker scenario (made so that one player is guaranteed to lose but chooses the winner)?
  • Is it possible for a "tie" to occur (i.e. two players from two different Mafia groups alive at endgame)? If you do not want a joint win, then who has priority and wins the game?
  • Is there an alignment Cop? with a Doctor? without a Mafia Roleblocker?
  • Is there a Cult? with normal recruitment mechanics? (This is a good way to get people to hate you and your entire family)
  • Is there a Jester or Survivor? (Again, this may cause a legacy of hatred)
  • If the game starts with at least 9 players, can the Town lose without mislynching three times?
  • Are there a high number of "confirmable" roles? (i.e. a one-shot Vig can be confirmed by shooting; Masons can confirm each other; etc.)
  • Are there "mod notes" or other facets of the setup that are completely unknown to every player?
  • Are there any unclarified role interactions where the results could become fuzzy? (Bus Drivers, mutual Roleblockers, and multiple kill flavors are the usual suspects)
  • Are there any abilities that can be abused? (i.e. Inventors that can ask for anything they like; Town falseclaim abilities)
  • Are more than half of the players power roles?
  • Are any of your players given debilitating post restrictions?
  • If you were playing in a similar game and received any of the roles from this setup, would you be upset with that game's moderator?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", your setup needs a second look - at least.

So once you've gotten your game sufficiently reviewed, it's time to move on to the next chapter

Basically, I decided that if I didn't completely understand all of the above, that I might be in over my head designing my own game without a lot of help. Running a tried and true setup might be another thing.

Bastard Mod - MafiaWiki

A common shorthand definition of a bastard mod game is that it is designed mostly for the moderator's amusement more than that of the players.

Bastard games are notoriously difficult to do well. Most moderators' bastard setups will be imbalanced or not fun for some other reason. This doesn't stop them many moderators from trying to run them, though.

Bastard Mod games should not be confused with bad games, which are self-explanatory. However, the line between the two tends to be dangerously thin. If players called your game "bastard" when you were not actively trying to make it one, you should consider getting your next setup looked over by better reviewers.

A couple things I picked up from this article:
Many of the roles/things that can be considered bastard, are just part of our site meta, lol.
The perception/judgement of what is, or is not, bastard, varies greatly.

What does seem to be a common thread, is whether or not it looks like the mod-provided info is accurate or not, can be trusted, if the mods are essentially "lying" to the players, and certain roles are considered bastard, almost by definition. I'm not including ANY of the ones that have been discussed in the article, because most of the ones I've looked up, we've had some version of, on the regular.

But to give an example:
There are different types of seers.
Variations & Sanities
Since the ability to determine guilt or innocence makes Cop a strong role, some moderators dampen its power through the use of sanities - alterations to the accuracy of its investigation results. While many moderators are opposed to the use of these sanities, Cop is the only role where it is established through tradition and meta that results are not guaranteed to be accurate, and if a Cop is not told that it is Sane it is assumed that any of these sanities may apply. Sanity may or may not be revealed upon death, according to the mod's discretion.

  • Sane Cop: Results are accurate.
  • Insane Cop: Results are the opposite of what they should be.
Once the player realizes they are Insane, they can produce effective results by reporting the opposite of what they discover.
  • Paranoid Cop: Results are always indicative of non-Town (Mafia, guilty, etc.)
Once the Cop discovers their sanity, they may stop investigating, as all results are equally useless.
  • Naive Cop: Results are always indicative of Town (non-Mafia, innocent, etc.)
This variant is more common than Paranoid Cop, as its results are less disruptive.
  • Random Cop: Results are randomized.
This is a bastard role and almost never used.
Non-Sane Cops are rare in smaller games. If a Cop does not have several results available to help deduce its sanity, its results can become meaningless as a whole.

Moderators' judgment varies as to whether roles that falsify investigative results (Godfather, Framer, Miller, et al.) affect non-Sane Cops or in which order passive investigation alteration and Cop sanity resolve.

In the above example, you can see why the Random Cop would be considered bastard, and while the other versions would wreak a lot of havoc in the game, make it really hard, and depending on the design, could be more or less balanced, you can make an argument that the players can still reasonably solve what's going on, so basically they have a chance, so it isn't bastard.

Just as a style point, I would hate for the term bastard to get too much use. For one, we have our own site meta, and that meta uses a lot of mechanics traditionally considered bastard. I would truly leave declarations of bastardry to those who have a deep understanding of WW in general, an appreciation of game balance, in depth understanding of the game at hand, experience, site meta, and an appreciation of just how solveable things were for the class as a whole.

Overuse, or incorrect use, of the term bastard, I can see causing a lot of confusion and harm.

I would leave it to more seasoned players to use the term.

Lol. Now you're not so crazy. Definitely thought you were crazy when you disagreed and thought playing was easier than modding when busy

For those who haven't heard this, I know I don't play much now but I'm going to be stepping back even more from playing. It's not something anyone has done that has pushed me away from playing. It's more that I have a hard time playing while busy. I love playing, a little too much, and so I tend to ww to the exclusion of all else which isn't healthy for me. So the couple hours I have free ends up being filled completely with ww. I've tried adjusting my gameplay but always end up back to my normal (just with sometimes dropping off a day here and there).

I'll still mentor and mod but I won't be spectating and playing will be an extremely rare occurrence

I feel like I made a very similar post in tot chat haha probably looked at the same wiki page too

The very broad definition encompasses a lot of things we do regularly here, so in my opinion the term just doesn't mean much at all when you put it up against our site meta. Sure we don't have roles like random seers and the like popping up (anymore) but we sure as heck have a lot of game setups where there is some element of not being able to trust information that comes straight from the mods. Bastard by the strict definition, but normal here. So to me calling a game a bastard game is just like...meaningless lol

Edit: basically the same thing I said when it came up in tot chat

A bastard game is just one that is intentionally unbalanced, the mod lies to players outside of typical role mechanics, or there are non-standard mechanics that may affect players who don't know about them. Or any combination.

There's also a lot of subjectivity. Bastard is in the eye of the beholder. There can also be bastard roles within a game.

Super subjective...
But for instance a lot of people would consider a third party role that can convert people a bastard role. Or one where part of their win condition is to be lynched.

It's hard to say what would really count as a bastard role (or even a bastard game) around here because we're so experimental with our game design. There aren't really strong enough rules here to say that anyone is bsstardizing them unless it's like...a faction game with no wolves and the players weren't told that was a possibility (I've played a game like that lol was still fun, whether or not it was really WW is debatable).

There's a difference between a bastard game and a mechanics heavy game and a poorly balanced game though.
Pretty much lol

Though I'd say any game where the mod actually does lie is probably the most objective measure of a bastard game. It's all on a continuum though. Because if there's a role that says the mod has to lie (like an unseerable wolf)...that's not really a bastard game. Some might consider it a bastard role.

Oh, I thought of another. Faulty seers. Classic bastard role if they aren't told or it isn't somehow hinted that the results can't necessarily be trusted.
Non-standard doesn't really exist here because standard doesn't really exist here. If you're like "hey this is a basics game!" and then you throw some OP chaos in there, sure, that's a bastard game. Otherwise...I don't think the word has too much meaning here anymore.

I just think about how I plan my endgames when I'm wolfing by myself and it's mostly just the people I have the most fun sparring against. Sometimes even people who I think might catch me. I like the challenge.

Agree, except for you. You're just so fun to kill...

So you guys could be comods for the upcoming Mario WW games I have in mind this year! :heckyeah::cat:

Could I mini-mod/mod-assist some game soon? Just for the experience. I could be the lynch tally keeper :peeking:
I'm also interested in learning how to mod, but I'd mostly just sit back and just do some learning. I'm definitely not ready for game design

I don't know where all the players, especially new ones, got so obsessed with modding. I blame myself, for asking publicly to baby mod the noob game.

It's because we make it look like so much fun 😉

Run away kids save yourselves you know not what you ask for

I'm already very stressed by modding just from the planning stages. I'm not even sure whether to use the metric or imperial system for balancing.
You can only balance with the scales of justice
