👍

Probably not a bad idea. 😉 And I'm probably the least capable person to do this sort of things anyway - I know next to nothing about facebook or myspace. I think I was thinking of myspace when I thought about the group thing......

You all should seriously consider rooming with some second years before deciding on an apartment. I know a good number of people are looking for roommates, and it could save you a lot of money since the apartments in this area are so overpriced.

And about the facebook thing... we tried to create a group but never got it to work (I think the groups are tied to your undergrad institution). There is a PCOM 2009 group on Myspace, though. Maybe one of you should start a group for 2010 🙂

Exactly, and....

DO NOT RENT AT STERLING RIVERSIDE APARTMENTS (Did I say that already?)

Also, I have a brand-spanking new Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy with CD I need to get rid of (still in plastic shrink-wrap). Any future GA-PCOM students who would like to get rid of $65 (including shipping), PM me.

For those who may be unfamiliar, the Netter's Atlas is the gold-standard in anatomy - and you wil need it for first year, and then keep it on your shelf for the rest of your careers for ready reference.

so I received my packet with all the financial aid info and other stuff...I tried to log in into nucleus and it worked but once I'm logged in and I try to click on "email" "calander" or "groups" it doesn't work and it logs me out right away...all the other clickable icons in there are working fine though...is anyone else having the same problems? can anyone help?

thanks,
Nancy

Nancy,

You may have to create a separate login and password for your email. Some of us current students were having some probs with that as well. Welcome to the love/hate relationship btwn. technology at GA-PCOM

Does anyone know about the day that PCOM-GA has that is about financial aid stuff and other things. They mentioned it at the interview and tour. Anyone know when it is?

I got something in the mail for April 28th...I think that is what you're talking about, but you should receive a letter that asks you to RSVP.

hope to see some of you there 🙂

Who knows when I will receive something from them. I have sent in both deposit and have not heard a word. Thanks for the info.

I would call them. I just sent in my first deposit at the beginning of March (the 9th) and I received the invite to the New Student Reception on April 28th today in the mail. I've also received my financial aid stuff already.

How many people are planning on attending the Reception? I know I'm going and plan to do a little apartment hunting while I'm down there 🙂

I will attend the student day when I get my invitation in the mail.

hey everybody! I am very excited to be starting at GA-PCOM in the fall, i think it will be an awsome experience.
A few questions, is it required that we attend all of these meetings and orientations, or are they set up for those who can make it. Also, when do we need to send transcripts in, and to what mailing address do we send them?

Thanks so much guys, and I hope you all enjoy the spring/summer!

I dont see why you wouldn't want to go to orientation... I think its actually mandatory anyway. Here's why you should go:
1. Adjusting to med school is tough and crazy. You'll get info and activities/events to help you get settled in more quickly than we did.
2. You will set up your email and network accts, fix any probs with financial aid, insurance, sign up for student clubs, etc. etc.
2. You get to meet your profs, faculty, classmates, and some of us OMS-IIs. Personally, I think med school would be impossible to survive if it weren't for the great peeps in the class.
3. The school, SGA, and SOMA are working together to have one or two outings to give you guys a chance to hang out and relax before classes start.
4. you might get your first assignment (probably medical vocab, as in our case)

So, in other words, go to orientation. As far as your transcripts and stuff... you'll have to email Aisha deBerry. I assume do it as soon as your new one comes out.

Woops,
I didnt mean orientation, I meant the few dates that they have set up in june, one is for financial aid and one is for somthing else. I am from the west coast, so it would be hard to make it out for those dates, but i plan on heading down in the middle of July to get a place and settle in...im so excited for life in ATL.

Thanks for the suggestion to email Aisha deBerry, I will do that.

Do theyhave a web address

Sugar Mill does not have a website and if you google the name you will get various apartments with the same name. You also might find a comment board about the apartment which I think is ridiculous. I looked over all the complaints and it seems as though I am living in a different apartment as they are. The complaints given, I have not experienced myself.

ok, so here is a question for everyone...

i got into PCOM-GA, but i also got into st.george's in the carribbean. i'm from atlanta so i have family here that i'd probably live with, so i'd save a ton of money that way. but i know that sgu grads have received some pretty prestigious residencies (harvard, yale, stanford, etc). i'm trying to make up my mind...i'm just very concerned about getting the best residency placement possible.

what do you guys think? and dont be biased!! please!!

also, one more question...

does anyone know where i can find where pcom grads got their residencies for the past year or even 5 years?

thanks everyone

PCOM-GA is a new program - it just opened in 2004, therefore it hasn't graduated a class of med students yet.

If you are looking for PCOM-PA match lists, here is one from 2004

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=247214

Just search on this site and I'm sure you can find what you're looking for.

You are asking on the GA-PCOM 2010 thread - if you would like unbiased opinions, you might want to ask this in the pre-osteo forum. 😉

Personally, I'd say go for GA-PCOM - it's a great school!! No bias of course.... 😛

There are several reasons why I do not believe you should go to a carribean school over a DO school:

1) Med school is tough enough without having to worry about the stress of
-island living (might seem appealing at first, but it gets old quick and most of the islands with med schools except for like AUC are in a 3rd world country). You will not have a support system i.e. family to call or go to easily when stressed, few amenities that you are used to in the US. Very expensive to bring goods into a carribean island. I have heard of people at Ross that have lost electricity for days at a time! Don't need this, med school is stressful enough.

2) The carribean schools in my opinion, are there to make money. Even the "best" ones like SGU. The faculty could really care less about you (just what I have heard). Our faculty cares about the students. Everyone of your classmates will be cut-throat to try and get that "best residency". Our classmates help each other out.

3) It is my understanding that rotations are a free for all, "set them up yourself" which means you will be calling around the country to even try to get that Surgery rotation to look good for that "best residency". More stress.

4) I think there are one or two states that still give carribean students a problem coming back to practice. Minor detail, but not if you want to get licensed there!

5) This point people may argue. I have a brother that was chief resident and now chooses residencies for his program. He has told me that carribean students are always looked at last (even SGU). It is 1) Allopathic 2) DO 3) Carribean. Those few residencies that you heard at Yale or whatever were prob. very slim shots and the students may have even known people there. Bottom line: Although people think DO students have a stigma, we are treated like American Med. students because that is what we are. You can be a great Dr. coming out of the carribean but how stressful is it getting there?

Bottom line: Go DO whether it is our school or somwhere else.

I am extremely biased, but go to GA-PCOM. Not only do you have ties to the area, you will get a better education here. Don't let a few anecdotes about prestigious residencies lead you to believe that you will have the same experience. Besides, who is to say that you wouldn't end up at a top tier program after graduating from GA-PCOM 🙂

In my opinion, missing the financial aid meeting/accepted students day should not be a problem for you. I was glad to go last year, but I probably would not have gone if I were in your situation. However, anyone within a day's drive should definitely come. I met a lot of my classmates there and had a great time.

thanks everyone! yeah, after i saw the match list and talking to a few folks, being a DO wouldnt restrain me from the "top tier" residencies. i just needed to make sure, ya know?

anyways, looks like i'll be at ga pcom in the fall! getting excited!

welcome to the family

Welcome..

1) glad you chose us over "Pay at the First Window, pick up degree at second" COM

2) DON'T RENT AT STERLING RIVERSIDE, but if you do, mention me, and we can split the referral fee 😀 (wait, that rhymes...)

3) As sketches mentioned, if your within a day's distance, try to make it to the reception in April and Fin Aid in June. Oddly, the reception is scheduled when many of us will be in Washington DC (DO Day on the Hill), but a good amount of the class should still be around.

4) Guess what we did in our practical exam today? - First one with the right answer wins a tube of Surgi-Lube!! (that rhymes too...)

Does anyone think the following is funny?

Q: What do you call it when a another physician sends you a patient to manage their injury? A: Referred Pain (HAR!!) "Sketches" doesn't find that funny, can you believe that??

Q: How many Dr. Giglio's does it take to change a light bulb? A: WHERE'S MARKEL?? (It'll make sense later, trust me)

Thank you, Thank you, I'll be here all week.

I have a question for GA-Pcom current students or anyone elso who might have some good info....what r my chances to get in this year if im in the TOP 8 on the waitlist.
thanks

does anyone know if we'll be able to do rotations at the pcom-pa sites? i'd personally love to do my er rotations at albert einstein, and i believe that pcom-pa is affiliated with them and has their students do rotations there...

thanks!!

4th year you will have the opportunity to go where you want for electives. 3rd year you will have to stick to the core/required sites in the Southeast (GA, SC, NC, AL). Perhaps we will have some electives 3rd year that you can get permission to go to Philly but we have not heard that as of yet.

I applied late, interviewed late, and got waitlisted. Then I got accepted a little bit over 1 week before orientation. Even then, one student had to leave for certain reasons a week after classes started, and they accepted another student to replace him. I don't know where I was on the list, so I can't give u real odds. But i hope this gives u an idea that u just never know when u'll get the call. good luck.

If you are indeed in the first 8, I would say chances are good. There is always quite a bit of movement on the list around May and June (at all DO and MD schools). Assuming you are in the first 8 to 10 people, I would stay optimistic.

ditto what BMW said, 3rd year would be down here, and 4rth year electives you should be able to access PA sites if you want. As always, we're not there yet either, so take our words with a grain of salt.

Heck, call the school and ask them. You can get a more "official" answer that way.

Usually were so tied up in books/lectures/labs we sometimes don't know about administrative developments or can't keep track of all of them.

Hey Tsazmand,
If you are on the waitlist, DO NOT GIVE UP!!! Jslammit was talking about me. I got accepted 2 weeks after the classes had started. So basically I missed 2 weeks worth of classes.... I kept calling every few days, updated my file did whatever there is out there to do and here I am. Especially if you are on top 8, I wouldn't give up that easily.
Good luck.
I got good wishes from a current classmate and never even knew her, I guess her wishes worked for me.

Hey everyone,
I hope everybody is getting excited for the summer and school.
I had a question for current students; How was the white coat ceremony, do they make it pretty fancy, or is it more of a casual thing? Just trying to figure out who I should invite ect...
Thank you so much guys

They usually send invitations to your family, and you can invite just about as many people you want (within reason, of course). You'd have to let them know how many are coming so they can arrange for seats/food etc.

We had to wear ties (no jackets though, since we had the white coat), and there's a casual reception which follows. Not too fancy at all. I think we actually had class that morning before the event 😴

I don't know if they are going to change anything for this year, but since there will 2nd year students around, they'll probably make us a part of it somehow.

You're obviously itching to get started!! Believe me, when you hit endocrinology, you'll wish it was summer vacation again!!

Glad to see y'all are excited.

I was recently waitlisted too, but I was told that I was at the top part of the list, so I am staying optimistic.

Nope Sam we had class before the opening ceremony day not the white coat. I think the white coat ceremony lasted approximately 30-40 mins not more then that.

DON'T GIVE UP! I have been told that our class of 2009 had a lot of people that were waitlisted. A lot of people reserve spots at multiple schools and then when GA-PCOM sends out a letter to reserve your spot for $2000 then I am sure a lot of people will drop this school if they don't want to go. At least last year they required $250 first and then $2000. That $250 was a low amount compared to other medical schools so a lot of people reserved their spot at GA-PCOM. Being in the top 8 is great.

I have created a group on myspace for the georgia campus for the class of 2010. The philadelphia campus has a group also. I was not sure if we should join their group or create our own. Let me know what you think?

I'm glad to see that they're excited about school as well...at least someone is. Is it just me or is everyone looking a little fatigued?...myself included 😀 Endocrinology? It took you that long? It only took me until the infamous head and neck exam/exam #2 before I was ready for summer vakay! 38 school days and counting, everyone! I'm ready for the survivor's picnic...they'd better supply the keg!!

anyone knows the deadline for the $2000 deposit? I've already sent my $250 deposit a long time ago, but I don't want to miss the big deposit deadline and have them think that I'm declining my seat (b/c I am not 😀 ).

thanks,
Nancy

Trust me they will notify you by mail when they want your $2000. Ours was due around mid-May, I think.

I finally received my binder, financial aid info, and invite to new student day. I had to get my parents to physically go to the philadelphia campus to figure out was going on. I am glad it is all straight now. I feel a bit better 😀

Oh, SPOM's a blur now.

But the fact remains that it (white coat, ribbon cutting) was not very formal - more family oriented etc. I had my tie off and sleeves rolled up before you could say "tie off and sleeves rolled up".

i've tried asking this question on general osteopathic threads, but i thought i'd ask it here too. i'm pretty interested in international health and thought it'd be interesting to do a rotation or two in the uk (preferably london of course 😀 ) anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew of any DO students that had gone abroad to do a rotation. i know in the uk that the DO degree isnt favourable like the MD is, but I'd love to at the least do a rotation, and have the option to practice abroad if i chose.

anyone have any ideas? thanks!

My name is Scott and I was accepted into GA-PCOM back in November 2005. I decided to attend GA-PCOM because of its cohesiveness amongst the student body and the friendly environment. I'm just now jumping on the introduction-to-myself bandwagon here. Hey, better late than never. I graduated in August 2004 from North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, GA with a B.S. in Biology/Pre-med. I took time off to get married and let my wife, Miranda, finish her masters in Occupational Therapy. Now she gets to be my sugar momma and support me while I attend med school! What an awesome deal! I am 24 (25 when school starts) and my wife is 25 (26 when school starts). We have no children and do not plan to attempt any until my residency. However, we are getting some good practice with our two dogs (a Pomeranian, Tucker, and Jack Russell, Duke). Until school begins, I am a licensed insurance agent in Gainesville, GA. This job has fully taught me that my place is in medicine, and medicine only. Anyway, I look forward to joining/starting lots of clubs and organizations with you guys, and to meeting my new friends at our New Student Reception on April 28! 😀 I hope to find someone in our class that likes to run and workout as much as me, because I am going to need some fellow exercise buffs to keep me from getting lazy with the workload that awaits us!
