GA school applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I could have sworn there were four L1 trauma centers in Georgia.

Yes, Savannah is nice; did you see the "library" and the "student center" though? When I was there they were just empty buildings. What do they look like now?

I recently took the tour it looked extremely nice. The education building looks a little iffy on the outside but on the inside it is newly renovated and everything is in place. They even showed me the smart boards which was neat. There is a student lounge which looked nice and the auditorium building they have turned into the library. I am really impressed how they have brought it all together and I honestly think Savannah has the best facilities of any med school that I interviewed at. Not to mention you are literally on the hospital campus and they have devoted four buildings to the school of medicine. I am really excited to get started there.

There are four: one in atlanta, augusta, macon, and savannah.

Hmmm, don't these all have something in common, lol.

r there any oos friendly ga schools??

r there any oos friendly ga schools??

Emory is about 50-60% OOS. I think PCOM-Ga is also friendly to OOS applicants. I don't know about Morehouse. MCG, by law, is 95% in-state, and Mercer requires all of its applicants to be state residents in order to get an interview.

So if you're competitive, it looks like Emory and PCOM-Ga are your best bets.

So I am in Savannah this weekend looking for a place to live next year and its been tough so far. I want to find some place convienent to Memorial, affordable, and safe (around here it seems like you can travel one block and be in a really bad area). Do any of you Savannah natives have some suggestions? Anyone looking for a roomate?

Corabett Thomas Realty

They'll help you.

I always LOL at "outsiders" that are excited about Tybee Island.

What is so bad about Tybee Island? Never been there, not planning on living there, but I thought it was a nice beach (from what I was told by another "outsider")?

The Georgia coast is the largest shark breeding ground in the world 😀

Yup. Does anyone know if they plan on upgrading ARMC's ED to a Level I to accomodate the MCG expansion to Athens?

I can't imagine them doing that very quickly. I have never been a huge fan of ARMC (I live near Athens). Are they looking at ARMC or St. Mary's? They should probably do both so as to not overload the hospitals. I have heard from many doctors at ARMC that they "resent" the idea of having med students, so yikes, should be an interesting transition.

I know, right? I started typing something to that effect yesterday, but I didn't finish

wish my sister luck for next Friday, June 13th!

Will some of the Mercer students tell me when the Fin Aid meeting is schedule for? I know it's mandantory, but I lost my info? I thought is was around June 21st.

It is the 21st, from 8:30 to 2:00. I think they want you to call though and confirm you are coming and if you are bringing someone with you.

Registration starts at 8:30, but the workshop actually begins at 9. I know I won't be getting there until a little before 9. I have a feeling it's going to be unnecessarily long and boring, so I don't want to get there 30 min early for nothing! They called me today to ask how many people I'd be bringing, so they've probably already called you as well.

It's basically a "small town" beach with a trashy atmosphere.

The water is gross, the bars are filled with vagrants, and that's about it dude.

LOL

I mean, it is fun to hang out down there, but don't go expecting something nice.

Yeah, yall have fun with that financial aid workshop! You're correct in assuming its boring. About the only redeeming feature is free breakfast and lunch and the opportunity to meet with some second years (US!!!!) to talk candidly about what to expect (it won't be like your discussion with them during your interview where you were all on your "best behavior").

Of course, if most of you guys are in Savannah, you may not be having and
2nd years to talk to. I don't remember them asking any of us to go down there. I will be in Macon talking to first years, however.

The best part is listening to every branch of the military try to outdo the others in their promises.

We will be in Macon too. At least that is what the letter said, sure hope it is right.

Interesting...they haven't made a formal announcement asking some of us to be in Savannah that day. They did ask if we wanted to attend the Macon financial aid seminar. Not sure what I'll do.

I wish there was a savannah seminar. We all have to come to Macon for them to tell us how much debt we'll be in. Nothing like a day tip, at $4/gallon, to learn about more debt.

haha. No freaking kidding! At least the drive to Macon is half as short as the one to Savannah, at least from Athens.

Does anyone now when Mercer gives out their financial aid package/reward letters? It seems like a last minute thing. Wait until 4-6 weeks prior to starting to begin the process.

21st, we will get it at the financial aid thing. I agree I wish we could have gotten it sooner, made applying for scholarships harder and it would have really made the whole decision process easier, but hey at least we get something for our troubles on the 21st, lol.

only 7 more weeks. Can you believe it?

only 7 more weeks. Can you believe it?

SHHHH, quit reminding me. I'm up in Maine for 6 of those 7 weeks and have a wedding I have to be in right when I get back from here.

Do you guys wish it was a little further away or are you past ready to start?

I could use at least 3 more months to prepare.

You'll be fine. I assure you that everyone feels like you. I remember listening to the newly minted second years talk about their experiences with MS-1 during the financial aid seminar last year. I secretly thought "maybe I'm the only one they messed up on...maybe I dont' really belong here".

Self-doubt is absolutely your biggest enemy. I wish I could say it goes away, but I just finished my last MDE of my first year and even as I went in to take it this morning I though "what if I fail?".

Enjoy your summer...don't study. Relax and get ready. Med school is so fast paced that it will be no time before you're finished with your first year (and I'll be headed to the hospital for MS-III)

As far as financial aid...relax. As I mentioned, they will automatically award you enough financial aid to cover the "cost of attendance" as they determine it (usually around $60,000 a year). For most people that's more than enough. They only exception might be if you have a big family. However, one of my classmates has a wife and two kids and he hasn't had to borrow private loans.

Be sure to pm me with any questions...I'll do my best to alleviate any fears you may have.

Does anyone know where to find match lists from Mercer for the past few years? I can't find them anywhere on the website.

Also, can anyone (i.e. GADoc) comment on the level of involvement Mercer Students have in the care of patients during 3rd and 4th year clerkships and electives? I always presumed this was standard at every med school, but I read something the other day that some school's clerkships are nothing more than glorified shadowing experiences.

There are a few threads archived on SDN. Just search for "Mercer match list" and you'll find some.

I would be interested in this information as well. As I understand, it varies more with rotation than school, i.e. surgery is little more than holding a retractor wherever you go, but others can be more involved.

I know several ER docs that graduated from MCG who praise their clinical training. They say MCG students are encouraged to be aggressive and take on a lot of responsibility during clerkships. This is one of the big things I like about MCG. If I don't get in, I hope Mercer's style of clinical education is similar.

...mikey likey!

let us know when you get in, now. 👍

I'm sure the 3rd and 4th year rotations are the same at Mercer and MCG. I mean, they'd have to be as far as patient contact because you get graded for them.

Besides, it's a little misleading the way that MCG guy said that because you're going to rotate to other hospitals anyhow.

So while MCG wants this, this, and that for each student, other hospitals might want this, this, and this from them.

Take that kind of info with a grain of salt dude.

If those guys went to Mercer they'd probably be saying the same thing.

Edit: LOL at protractor.

"Dr. Smith, did you want me to use the Pythagorean Theorum on that left kidney?"

You'd be surprised how standard medical education is ANYWHERE you go. That's what the LCME (the accrediting body for all U.S. allopathic med schools) is all about. When you go see a doctor it doesn't say "Dr. Joe Schmoe - Harvard graduate". It says "Dr. Joe Schmoe family practice" or whatever. Thus you trust someone to make sure that a doctor graduating from Harvard is as competent as a doctor graduating from any other school in the country.

I can't speak for other schools but at Mercer, they take the requirements of the LCME very seriously. In fact, even in our first year we have to log EVERY patient encounter even if all it is is shadowing. For example, at Mercer during your first year you will have a two week preceptorship with a doctor that takes place in the spring. You have to log all of your encounters in a data base that Mercer uses for LCME visits.

Now, with that said, I'm sure the actual amount of experience you have in your third year varies. But it probably varies more from attending to attending than school to school. It also depends on what time of year you start a particular clerkship. For example, if you start surgery in the first of your third year, right after the new interns have started, you're darn right you're not going to be doing much. The interns will be doing most of the work (and rightfully so). However, if you have surgery later in the year after the interns are burnt-out on the procedures they consider mundane, you'll probably get to do all you want.

As far as Mercer's match list...I posted on this thread back in March. Just scroll back through all the pages. Prepare yourself, it may make those of you who aren't going to Mercer wish you had! (j/k)

One more thing...your 4th year doesn't depend on your medical school at all. Generally, you'll have one or two required rotations, but after that your year is absolutely yours to do with as you wish. At Mercer, 4th years take step II of the boards then finish up a 4 week requirement for our Community Medicine department. They are required to do 6 weeks in the E.R. and maybe infections disease. That's it. What they do after that depends on what they want to do for residency. They have time for sub-i's etc.

are chances to get off wiatlist less then 1 % from now on?

I wanna sign a lease fro apt complex in ATL for DO school but not sure what to do. Don't wanna lose roommate.

The MCG lady told me that the waitlist movement "comes in spurts," and to just keep your hopes up. People have gotten off it a few days before orientation and even a week into the semester.

I would go ahead and set everything up for DO school. Yeah, you may lose money in a lost deposit and breaking a rental contract, but you'll make it up with the cheaper attendance cost at MCG.

Everyone going to the Financial Aid seminar at Mercer...Remember take that online quiz and bring in your score.

But, what about my roommate?
will he be able to get another roommate?

As cold hearted as it may sound, you need to ask yourself would you give up a spot at mcg for someone who, while being quite pissed, will find another room mate if you left?

I got some PM's requesting links to the quiz.

Here it is.

Should take about 15 minutes or so.

I don't really understand is this something we have to have complete by Saturday? Was it in the letter and I just somehow missed it? Also where exactly is the "quiz"? Sorry I am just a little confused 😕.

Nevermind, stupid me, I only scanned the letter the first time, just now found the info on a second read 🙄. Thanks Polynikes I would have never known to do that. I owe you for saving my future finacial security, lol.

Just wondering, since you talked to mcg lady, do you have a feeling the majority were moved off? morehouse starts in roughly 3 weeks, so time is more pressing than the start date. has anyone heard anything this week. i checked the w/l movement thread it looks the same

She didn't give off any indication of how much it had moved, she only said what I posted. There's no telling what will happen between today and early August. I can't say whether or not the majority has moved off because I don't know how the list has moved in past years. I do know of people getting in at the last second, so there's movement all the way to the end.

***Sigh***

So uh, in that financial aid seminar letter, it says that you should bring your spouse, parents, etc.

Well, I'm 28 years old and my mother will be coming with me.

She is adamant that I let her come with me, and she will talk to every single one of you guys.

Anyone else bringing their parents or am I the only one?

Ha Ha! Don't feel bad. I was 25 and my wife came with me.....so what's the big deal about that? She sat through the entire presentation with a huge (and I mean huge) stack of laminated objects which she proceeded to cut out as if no one else was even around. She's a middle school teacher and somehow decided the financial aid seminar was as good a time as any to get that stuff done. So, of course most of my classmate's only impression of my wife was "that lady who sat in the back cutting out laminated objects". Fortunately, she redeemed herself this spring by coming to the anatomy lab with me and quizing me. Let's see your mom do that!

I talked with Dr. Young the other week about my application and he indicated that most of the alternate list movement has come and gone. He said people do come off between now and orientation but no more mass acceptances (which he defined as approx. 10 applicants per week).
