GEMS Georgetown 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just curious, is there any sort of guarantee for getting into Gtown med if we do well or is it still up to the Committee?

I heard some past GEMS speak of some classmates that didnt get interview invites so GUSOM is not guaranteed... but that 80%+ admissions figure obviously shows a very strong relationship.

I think they avoid using "guaranteed" and "early assurance" to keep people in check.

I am hoping/thinking they will call us the week of the 18th. They just have to look over 40+ applications and decide; that shouldn't be too bad. 😀

I think the hardest thing they have to do right now is go through those study assessments and try to put together a group of students who are capable of learning from one another while at the same time capable of teaching one another without being too "power hungry." I've been thinking about the events of the day and I am starting to see the purpose of most of the events. We were being tested the entire day. Im even certain that the current GEMS students were in on it as well. lol, I dont mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it makes sense in my mind. I'm almost sure that when they left us in the room alone during the assessment that they were testing us as well. hahaha.

You bet. They dont make it a 10 hour day to only use the 2 hours for the interviews. These people are just amazingly organized.

Hi EVERYONE~!!

I'm a current GEMS and I just want to say it was real nice meeting all of you!! I know right now you're probably really nervous, and anxiously waiting for your acceptance letters, so are we! hold tight 🙂! I wish everyone of you good luck--!! If you haven't done so, don't forget to send thank you notes to your interviewers (it's not a requirement or anything, but it's def. a nice gesture) Also, I just wanted to say for those of you who followed up with your student facilitators, with answers AND and explanations via email we were def. impressed, good job (don't sweat it if u didn't)!! but that's one of the skills you learn early on in GEMS 👍

SOooo I'm going to be moving out of my place the end of this month... I have the absolute BEST location for those who prefer to live CLOSE, i mean CLOSE!! I'm right across the street from school...(for those early 8 AM FS sessions, it's been a blessing!) I am looking for a quiet, easy going FEMALE student to take over my spot starting June 1st! (Rent is $726/month + util.) There are other Georgetown Med students/law students living there now. The room is SMALL! So if you have a whole rack of stuff it might not work out too well. On the plus side, you get your own large, private balcony. I posted it on craigslist as well: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/roo/1167896174.html Let me know as soon as you find out you get in, I'll try my best to hold it for you guys 🙂 Just let me know ASAP!!

Wow, Aloha, that location is perfect. If I was a female, I'd be all up on that.

...and I'm thinking you got into G-town. Congrats!!!:prof:

Aloha, congrats on your completion of the program. Hope you've received your acceptance to Gtown!

Would you have any update on the admissions timeline. Not looking for specifics but any general update on a delay or if it's going on schedule. Last year people started getting notified on the 19th which would correspond to next monday this year.

That is an awesome location and apartment, I wish I would be able to find something like that if I were to get the call.

Also, I took a visit to the 2008-09 Gems thread, and now I'm more excited/nervous/worried than ever!

Another thing... If you knew that nobody was going to show up at your graduation, would you still attend your commencement?

Yes, I would. Do it for yourself. You went through all those years of schooling and it would be a shame to not walk. I say just do it and enjoy while you are doing it. 🙂

Yo Flow, I personally did not attend my commencement b/c I had just gotten a job and didnt want to take a day off. But I still dont feel I missed anything so if it doesnt have any meaning to you like me, why bother. Hopefully I will be there at your med school commencement - you'll have to chain me down for me to miss that one. :xf:😀:xf:

lol, neither did I or any of my roommates. You'd be surprised at how many people dont go to college graduation.

...but hey, "by May 30th" could mean today or tomorrow so keep those phones handy. Needless to say, you get that call, you BETTER post.😀:meanie:

I agree.. after thinking about it a bit more, it would make sense to receive calls next week sometime because the deadline for the financial aid forms is June 1st. so they would have to give us ample time to have the forms filled out and submitted by then. speaking of the forms, has anyone submitted their fafsa and the institutional application yet?

Yeah, I did it like a week after the interview. Dean Pollock said we could do it even without being accepted just to have our docs in on time.

I think college and med graduation are different. Med graduations are generally smaller and you are more close to your classmates that you want to go. plus it is like a ceremonial thing because now you've become something in the world. You know what I mean?

College graduations are just the most boring thing ever cuz they are like 4000 people at bigger universities.

I went to my ugrad graduation but not to my grad school graduation. I only went for sake of my parents the first time.

I don't know... I don't have much of a family that I can go to commencement for. I haven't really gotten close to many people either.

If calls indeed come this Monday, they will likely be made between 8AM-9AM, your local time. Someone even got one at 7:50AM PST.

I'm going to be a complete wreck come Monday, but I hope for good news.

You're not the only one, brother. I am under so much stress right now too.

Also, a little more news: In 2006, some folks were called on the 3rd Friday of May which would correspond to TOMORROW. Not trying to stir the waters but I'm just saying.

Good insight, but May 4th fell on a Thursday with the 3rd Friday being exactly 2 weeks from the 4th.

I don't think I'll sleep on Sunday. :scared:

lol, are you messing with my numbers paranoia? What do you mean about the 3rd Friday?

but likewise, not one wink on Sunday night.

So does anyone know if we will get a call if we are NOT accepted? Or do we get a letter a few days later?

I know I shouldn't be thinking about that, but I can't help it. I feel like if I don't find out soon, whether it be acceptance or rejection, I'm going to freak out!

Here's to hoping we hear soon... for the sake of all our sanities.

It scares me to think that they will have to cut at least 18 people. I mean, that's a lot. What if.....?

Camby, unfortunately, it appears you hear nothing if you get rejected judging by the way folks who were not accepted last year kept posting to ask if all acceptances had gone out. Also, nobody posted anything about rejection letters and ppl usually post if they recieve something like that. Basically, if you dont hear by the first day when people start to report acceptances, then you should probably count yourself out. I am also ready to accept the harsh reality.

But like Randy Pausch said "Brick walls are there for a reason. they test how bad you want something"......or something to that effect😀

I know. 18 people. and everyone seems so equally qualified. My friend told me that when all things are even, they'll probably cut the ones who could get into med school with a little more effort aka the people with the best grades. This made sense initially but it just doesnt seem that simple.

i wonder if choosing applicants is based on a point system? and then they just look at it and vote??

I know for screening applicants, there is some type of points system but as far as selecting interviewees, I think there may be truth to that Maxim, I heard that before from someone who would know.

they still had the points thing for the interviews too..

you mean screening interviewees based on grades? it is interesting that they only ask for your mcat score and not gpa on the gems application.. some weird thoughts going through my head 😀

I dont think there is a point system for the final stage of interviewee selections because what would be the purpose of a committe vote if a points system settles everything?

Perhaps it's both. Who really knows.

Also, they do have your transcript so they know your grades, remember.

Yea, i think it is both.

I was just trying to say that they have your MCAT scores too in the AMCAS (just like your grades), but ask for it again in the application.

Also, I remember reading that a past gems posted here that they accept students regardless of if they have been accepted or not to another program.

Esc I didnt mean screening interviewees solely or primariyl on grades. I meant that there may be truth in the fact that when there is a deadlock and all candidates in question seem like a great fit, they may select the persons who would best benefit from GEMS aka the person with the most "modest" grades as it said on the website. I remember the mission statement said something like "the program is designed for people from socioeconmically disadvantaged backgrounds with modest academic achievements"

True. Thanks for clarifying.

Wow, everyday we come closer to the end of May the more nervous I become. I find myself thinking about the "What if's...........".

Well, since we all made it to the interview and we don't specifically know how many students they will take (although we have an average for the last few years) all we can do is just sit tight and pray.

Good luck everyone!

If it was meant to be, then it will happen. :luck::luck:🙂🙂

Fly, tell me about it. I feel like I have butterflies in my stomach when I think about GEMS.

Time to dust off my xbox 360 and play some street fighter 4 on xbox live from now until Monday dawn. Who is up for a challenge? 😀

Hadouken!

fortunately for me my birthday is this weekend and i will be passing time in ATL. yay. lol, is anyone planning to avoid SDN at all costs this weekend?

I just thought of something...

I remember Dr. Walker mentioning his wife being pregnant and her due date being May 26th... am I making this up? Can anybody confirm this? I don't know why I would think that date otherwise...

Anyway, I can't imagine the GEMS committee would take the chance of him not being there for deliberations so I'm certain we will find out about acceptances next week. Any thoughts?

I still have to pay the rest of my semester's tuition, so I've been working as many hours as I can all week, so that keeps my mind busy and keeps me less nervous. I will probably work right into my commencement and right after, throughout the weekend. I am seriously hoping for good news, and will try to keep a positive outlook. I am just so grateful that an institution as prestigious as Georgetown believes that I have the potential to be a medical student. I want to be able to show them that I can do so, If they accept me. Until then, I will keep myself as busy as I can.
