Georgetown GEMS 2019-2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for getting this started early, I can't wait to see what people have to share!

I know this is a bit early in the game but I thought it would be good to start this thread as I have not seen any for this cycle so far. Welcome all!

Hmmm, if you can do GEMS, can’t you also do UNC MED program?

Anyways, I’m considering GEMS too. I’ve already been denied by Georgetown, the only problem is my stats are too high for GEMS based on the averages. Its a sucky situation. Too low for the SOM, too high for GEMS

A little confuse on their last essay question would be grateful if someone can explain what they meant by this.
Please share with the GEMS Admissions Committee how you expect to utilize your GEMS experience if you are accepted to the 2019-2020 GEMS Program. Please be specific

Do they have a minimum? I know theres an average and that is pretty low on it’s own..

Yeah if you go on their page it says they have a new minimum MCAT score of 500. I got a little below that and was going to retake it this year, but i'm not sure what date they did a cut off at for new scores or if they strictly enforced that minimum

Woah, the scores are still far from me but closer now.. I may reconsider applying. Would be a great school to attend.

Does anyone have a contact number or email for the program? I can't seem to find one.

Lol. Humble brag
Be careful of this on your interview. The committee will be looking for modesty and humility. I personally know someone who was rejected for having a personality very similar to yours. Unfortunately, no one called him out for it. So this is just a courtesy heads up to fake it til you make it

Hello everyone, new here. I haven't heard back from any of med schools, so I am considering post-baccs/ master programs. I am really interested in the GEMS program! But are there any other post-baccs that you guys are applying to?

I'm not applying, but I'm a big pioneer for post-bacc programs. Off the top of my head, here are a few of the best (not ranked)

Must be invited to:
Ohio Medpath (free program; just needed to have applied to Ohio State University)
Meharry Masters of Health Science
Buffalo AMSNY (free program; only open to NY residents)

Can apply to:
Drexel DPMS
Tulane Anatomy Certification Program
Charles Drew Post-bacc
Wayne State Post bacc (free; must be MI resident; must be 1st gen)

Tbh, I can see why my comment is seen that way, and maybe I subconsciously did humble brag but trust me, my stats are nothing to brag about. Not in the slightest. Especially my GPA... if anyone saw it they'd ask why I even applied to med schools this cycle, or how I got 2 II's.

Has anyone who's applying finished their application yet?

I have also applied to some of the DO postbaccs such as Touro, Nova, and Lecom

I submitted mine over the weekend. Were you guys able to completely fill the essay prompts? I found that some of my essays did not fit the whole word count.

Does anyone know when the program starts? I thought I saw September somewhere but can’t find the date anymore

Can someone clarify if both of the recommenders have to be science/math professors or just one? I’ve been emailing them too much

I think as long as you get your point across within the word limit, your word count doesn't matter too much. Some of my prompts got close to the word limit but there are some things like the vocational status prompt that definitely didn't require as many words. Cheers!

Anyone know when is the program going to send out interviews? and when is it too late to apply?

Hey guys, under the status section for the GEMS program application, under the checklist of Task for the Application, does anyone know the AMCAS Application Approval is for? Mine is not checked and I am not sure why.

So for this program, I can't reuse my letters of recommendation that I submitted to AMCAS? They need to be specialized to the program... ? Help???

Yes, your letter writer have to answer a few supplementary questions before they’re able to submit the LOR.

Is there a number to call to get in contact with the GEMs office, i tried sending an email through their portal and haven't heard anything back.

Did you email this email address? [email protected] I get a pretty quick response time, usually within a few hours.

Anyone know when is the program going to send out interviews? and when is it too late to apply?

The deadline to apply is March 29th. On the thread from last year, it seems like they started sending out interview invites a few days after the deadline passed.

Hey guys, I was sent his email from the GEMS program, and I am not sure what they want me to do. I cant resubmit my AMCAS application without making changes and they don't want me to make changes, they want my application to be certified, which i don't understand because my AMCAS application has already been processed.

GEMS email:
Good morning. If your AMCAS application has been certified prior to the November 30th, 2018 deadline you would not be able to make any additional changes to the application. Therefore, we are currently in need of your certified AMCAS to proceed forward with your file.

Does anyone understand what they are asking me ?

Your AMCAS application had to be “verified” by the November 30th deadline. Since you can’t get primary apps verified this late it means that you won’t be able to apply to GEMS this cycle unfortunately.

But if your AMCAS is already processed and VERIFIED, then you’re fine. Just download your app and upload it to the GEMS app

yeah I am not really sure, my application says it was processed 9/6/2018. So idk, but I will upload again, hopefully that works.

Another quick question, does the GEMS application, have to be submitted or completed by March 29th? Because I have already submitted my application, however one of my professors is taking their sweet time sending my LOR, and i am afraid they may send it after MARCH 29th. Do you guys think I'll still be good since I have already submitted?

Best way to answer this is to contact GEMS admissions since majority of us are applicants we won’t know the actual answer. If I would have to assume, without getting the letter in before deadline date would result in your application being drop.

Hello everyone,

Are we to send our official transcripts to the GEMS program? Or is it enough to have the AMCAS uploaded?

If the AMCAS include all your courses then it should be sufficient.

I’m really worried guys, my application has been submitted but one professor is playing with my life, lol. They haven’t submitted an LOR and I’ve been emailing them like crazy. I wonder if i would still be considered even if they submit the LOR after Friday ?

Call your professor or if possible go in person, they need to do it before Friday or it won’t be considered
I can’t go in person , because I’m in another state, but I’ll try to call. Cause this is too important. Thanks.
