Ok so I retook the MCAT today. The PS was unbelievably hard, but I think I killed the others. WHat if my PS score is terrible, and when I get them back Sept 15 - I already have an acceptance. Would they take it away? Just trying to figure out worse case scenarios here....

judging from past tests, most people have similar concerns after the test. Have you been on your MCAT thread? Unless everyone said it was easy I wouldn't be concerned. PS is the least important section anyway.

The mcat board is lit up with people complaining about the PS...everyone is saying how hard it was...

Godchaser - I'm a pretty average looking blonde with short hair. I'll see you there!

I would say you are in the minority there...

but interestingly there are a lot of Tech -> MCG people for some reason. There are ~70 UGAites in our class and ~30 Nerds, a ratio that favors you guys considerably. Not that I mind... I have met almost all of the techies and they are much more interesting than us. (IMO) But most of them seem to be jocks.

lol. What does that mean? Good luck. They like people who like them, though your experience might be different considering your MCAT score. Be sure to keep us updated.

ive been following this thread for awhile but just joined SDN! i got waitlisted to MCG (regular) for this fall and reapplied to MCG ED. i have an interview there on the 19th so hopefully i will be seeing some of you!! has anyone interviewed there yet w/ the new "format" where it's open file?! any different?! i remember it being very laid back last time!! good luck to everyone!

Meaning I'm average height (5'7") Sorry - hopefully, I'm not an average blonde. :)
I suppose that sounds weird without qualifying it. What do you mean my experience might be different? Didn't follow you bodonid...

Hey guys,
Congrats on all of those Mercer and MCG interviews! Very excited for all of you. MCG and Mercer are great schools, and I'd be ecstatic to interview there with the rest of you regular appers. Good luck at your interviews!

If you applied with a low MCAT score, I am sure they would take a more analytical approach to the interview, to see if they think you could "cut it". But you are going to have a much higher score when these results come back (right?) so you don't need to worry about it.

bodonid, you have a good point, and I am honestly honored to even have an interview. I am surrounded by some amazing applicants and reapplicants with really great credentials. Good luck everyone! I know the MCG'ers have interviews all this week. :)

Speaking of interviewing and analytical interviews - we should get a "tough interview questions" stream of posts going. Anyone want to share tough questions they heard at MCG or Mercer in past years? I know there is a similar thread in the main posts area that gets bumped from time to time, but I figured if anyone knows stories about GA schools - they could post here?

I had my interview at MCG this past Friday, and it was a great experience. What really stood out was how nice and relaxed the whole day was. From the office staff to the interviewer to 2nd years giving us the tour, everybody had a great attitude and made us all feel comfortable. The facilities were impressive, especially MCG Children's Medical Center. And we also managed to go to the anatomy lab right before lunch to see a cadaver's spinal cord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To everyone getting interviews, congrats and please don't be nervous. It'll be a great day and will only get you more excited about possibly going to MCG. Take care.

Paz,
Alex

Hmmm, tough interview questions. Mercer was pretty laid back, not really tough questions as much as tough topics. One of my interviewers asked me how I would balance family and medicine (it was very obvious from my essays and my responses to his question up to that point I focus a lot on family). That was hard, but not difficult to deal with. I just answered honestly. I really just conversed with my interviewers, let them know who I am. We talked about everything from food to GPS systems. Mercer was really easy, I actually enjoyed it and they really had a chance to see who I am. MCG was easy too, but one of my interviewers had a much more question and response style to interviewing. Asked me questions like, If I could only give my children two qualities what would they be? The hardest question I encountered through the whole interview experience was at MCG. It was, give an example at something you have failed at and what did you learn? But that was mainly because it touched on a very deep event in my life. So my advise to everyone would be relax and have fun. They are your advocate. They have been assigned to get to know you and tell the rest of the committee why you would make an excellent student. Interviewing was my favorite part of the whole process. You get to travel, meet cool people and get a free lunch. So pat yourself on the pack for getting to this point, and congrats to everyone who got an interview.

Oh and I did not get any ethical questions at Mercer or MCG. So I would not worry to much about those.

Thanks so much for your input Whatayear! Every little bit helps.

Anyone get grilled on universal healthcare?

Not me. Even at the University of Tennessee where a large part of the interview had ethical questions involved.

Anyone get grilled on universal healthcare?

I had a long talk with a family doc about how we should fix health care. Actually, that happen at both MCG and Mercer with drastically different thoughts from the ones involved.

First guy thought that we need to push towards universal coverage. Second guy thought that everything was great and that the ~50 million that are uncovered have their safety net- the ER.

I couldn't have disagreed more with the second one. But, what can you do....

Most interesting question was "what is the difference between a surgeon and a brake mechanic... both of them you trust with your life..."

These comments are really insightful - thanks guys! I am a bit worried about the universal healthcare questions coming my way also...

If you choose to go in the direction of supporting it...

~50 million American's without health insurance
~75% of bankruptcies are the result of medical bills
~We are the only industrialized country in the world w/o it
~We pay the most money per person for health care and rank last in preventable deaths

If you go the other way...

~It's not a right.. it's a privilege
~The safety net is the ER (lol)
~Medicare/caid is already a mess. The govt will only mess it up more
~One of the largest businesses in our economy (Take it away and see what happens)
~Decrease in quality of care
~Gate keeper program for specialists.
~Waiting lists for care (even though this argument doesn't hold up)
~less money for providers (doctors, nurses, PA's, etc)

I think the best way to answer this question is honestly.

If they ask you a question about Universal Healthcare they are actually doing the following... watching how you react to an impossible question and analyzing your political idealogy without asking specifically which would be slightly unethical.

With that in mind, I would watch how you answer that potential question. My luck is I would answer to much in a conservative way and a liberal would bash me or I will answer liberally and be lectured by a conservative interviewer.

I wish they would just hand us a card with all of the interviewers information and political views!!!!! haha+
I'm not sure that it matters what you say, as long as it is thoughtful. This particular subject is something every one of us should be thinking about a lot, there is no simple solution!

Last year I had a doc who crossed his arms and said "I see you sang for Bill clinton, well I hate the clintons."

That was how our conversation started. I got good marks from him, though, because I was able to constructively say why i agreed with Bill and how I disagreed with him.

Note: re healthcare, I see the possibility of this thread going in the wrong direction

I agree with Skymastre - it's good to bring up possibly scary and controversial topics, but let's all make sure we keep it positive no matter what comes up (non-inflammatory). That said, great comments so far! I know I plan to read up a lot of the current events going on, especially with politics and healthcare policies...anybody else planning interesting reading topics out?

or the post...depending on your political preference!

Hahaha! Those were our dissections! How did we do? It was the second dissection of the year. The spinal cord is pretty weird looking, huh? The groups are set up so that two seperate groups do the dissections. I did the spinal cord, and somebody else did the back earlier in the week. It really works well because you can really concentrate on your own dissection, and have the other group explain theirs to you. But it has its problems, too... some dissections (eye, brain) seem like they would be difficult to imagine without doing them yourself.

Bodonid-love that you can share your stories now that your in school. Thanks!

neither answer to universal healthcare is wrong. Even if the interviewer doesn't agree, presenting a logical viewpoint is most important. But I never got any questions about this.

It seems like quite a few people get ethical questions. About 1/2 my interviewers (maybe a third) asked some sort of ethical question.

I interviewed at MCG in February and a good bit of my interview involved universal healthcare. My interviewer asked 'in light of the upcoming election, which candidate do you think has the strongest plan involving healthcare and how do you think it will affect you as a future physician.' luckily, i'd read up on it beforehand just in care anybody pulled this question outta their hats. i avoided saying which candidate i favored and made sure that i just demonstrated that i had a good understanding of all the candidates' healthcare strategies and stated how i thought they would affect the economy. my interviewer flat-out said that she was happy with my knowledge of the topic and that she just wanted to make sure that i was interested in all aspects of medicine and how it may change in the future. i know this is kinda long. hope it helps.

Glamqueen and Godchaser1016 - sorry I haven't posted sooner but I am also interviewing on the 26th at Mercer. I will see you guys there... looking forward to meeting you.

I wonder if there are going to be 8 interviewees in the ED sessions? There were in regular decision last year. From what I can see, there are only 3 of us from SDN on the 26th and several on the 28th (looks like us SDN'ers faired well in the interview invites!). I expect to see more for the Sept. group.

I'll be there on the 26th at Mercer as well, so I guess that makes four of us so far...

Looking forward to meeting the rest of you. Should be a fun day :D

just make sure you are comfortable where you end up staying. I stayed at a Motel 6 in Macon and couldn't sleep. I stayed with a close relative in Augusta and had a nice dinner the night before. I don't think it impacted other peoples' perception of me, but it certainly could have, and it definately impacted how I felt on interview day.

Hope it went well, fahimaz. This is quite the thread you have started!

I thought it went really well. Very laid back day indeed with some good insight into how the program might be changing in the next few years. We'll see soon!

BTW. Apparently MCG is interviewing Mon-Friday (this week at least) with ~9 students/group. There were >200 applicants for EDP (largest number ever).

Good luck!

PS. The expansion looks like it might have to wait until the 2010 class (both for 200 in Augusta and 40 in Athens).

Did anyone on here interview EDP to Mercer and NOT get in?

I know there a bunch of us repeaters, but of that group had anyone applied EDP?

Glad it went well for your, Fahimaz - we're crossing our fingers for you! I know this must be your year! :)

My interview today at MCG seemed to go great. Now I am just holding my breath until October 1st. Good luck to everyone getting ready for an upcoming interview!!

Looks official..The LCME visit to Athens in April and June of 2009 would.....

That would allow MCG to begin accepting applications for the satellite campus and send out early acceptances in fall 2009.

Any new interviews for MCG going out? I heard they were doing interviews Mon-Friday.. Kinda surprised that it's so quiet.

Still no word for me. Then again, my application was pretty late and is probably at the bottom of the pile.

In response to that article about MCG's new Athens campus:

I think that the solution to increasing the number of doctors per capita is not expanding the medical schools. However, the way to increasing the doctors per capita is to increase the residency programs. Many students go to medical school in Georgia only to go out of state for residency and (no pun intended) establish residency in that state. Invest in our hospitals and increase the number and quality of the teaching hospitals.

However, increasing the number of medical students is of course good for us right now so I am not complaining... haha

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say that interviews are still being given out/set-up, at leas. I got home today to find a pleasant interview invitation in my e-mail for August 28th! Anyone else have an invite for that date? Also, to those of your who already interviewed, How did you feel about the single person, open-folder interview? Did they bring up things from your file? I'm interested in how the new system is. Thanks and good luck to everyone!
btw: I applied EDP

The new system is good IMO. The committee member gets to look at the folder, at the admissions office, before the interview. Mine had a sheet or two of notes that he had taken on me and proceeded to cruise through those topics while he was getting to know me. I think it was a great way to do the interviews. I'm glad the new dean made the change!

From what I heard from the other students that were there, they had a good time with it as well.

Congrats! I see you're a re-applicant as well.

Is Mercer's interview open or closed file?
