The admissions guy said they changed the color to black because it was less flashy. That way interviewees could stand out less than they already do in a full suit...
Random Q to all of you Harvard applicants...
did most of you have publications/intense research experience?

Nothing here in NYC (thank God). The Boston people are the ones to watch, though. Once there's news in Boston, then the rest of us can start counting down days. If pre-interview rejections have already reached the West Coast, they were probably sent out on or before Friday. MD/PhD acceptances started today. So far, we're lining up with last year's timeline pretty nicely (first rejections were received the weekend before the Tuesday of the first MD/PhD acceptances). We're in for a long haul everyone. Well, let's try to stay sane.
my mailing address is in a suburb of boston-- wahooo. i think there are one or two other boston/cambridge residents floating around on this site (snopearl- i think you got your cornell letter a day ahead of me in boston?). anyways, i'll let you guys know what goes down out here. i'm not expecting anything in the form of a big envelope, so I will probably hear soon.
it is really "lovely" weather today here in the beanpot, SBBunny- as a meteorologist I think these wintery mixes must be rather interesting?
hehehe
Yup, you know I'll be reporting in from the front lines if there's any activity. Although I kind of wish I won't be the first to get a letter since rejections go out first... oh well, what will come will come!
I called a while ago asking when would the decisions arrive since I will be out of town by the time they get here and needed somebody to check my mail, and they told me "at the lasted by the third week of March" so I think technically we should expect acceptances by Friday too. By the way, any URMs here?
Heh, yeah... that's a lot like my dad's theory about all of my waitlists. "Oh, well, they probably all know that you're going to go to Harvard, so they know that you won't attend their school." My premed advisor kind of said a similar thing when I emailed her... that alllll the other schools are just waiting for me to get into one of the "really competitive programs." Well, the "really competitive programs" are all snubbing me too... We're all in this mess together. Community amidst chaos!i hope yale and columbia rejected me bc they talked to harvard and learned that THEY would be accepting me....
aka...DELUSIONALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱
Yo, this is what I don't get. I also thought I read somewhere that we'd hear by the "third week of March." Btw, Harvard, it's totally the third week of March. So I'm like....did they mean they'd send them out by the third week? Le sigh.
SBBunny, you seem like you might have a heart attack sometime soon. Haha. You're stressing me out!! I spose we all deal with this differently...
Edit: I just re-read MIap's post and I realize he called "a while ago." Damn. I thought it was new info.

So am I following this right? Decisions will be mailed by the end of the week? So I should hear something by Monday or Tuesday at the latest?![]()

Aw, I don't mean to make you all nervous! I'm just naturally neurotic (also, I probably seem WAY more stressed out online than I actually am in real life). I find it really comforting to obsess and make odd predictions- it gives me an illusion of control in a process where I am completely powerless.
I called earlier and was told that they are looking to have ALL decisions mailed out by the end of the week. So, yes, you'll probably get news by the middle of next week. Stay strong everyone (and send good vibes to Boston)![]()
and it doesn't help that my bro went to harvard undergrad and still gets random mail from them once in a while...each time i see something from harvard i go nuts.
AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
three questions for you guys:
1. it is their spring break. do you think admissions is even working/sending letters this week?
2. if letters go out next week, are they still deciding? or are we sure decisions have been made?
3. what is the role of health career advisor at your schools in all of this? i thought that this should be our way to represent ourselves, and it seems from some responses that they play a huge role in comparing applicants. does harvard actually call them post-interview to ask where ppl got in etc.? seem like favoritism could really enter in here.
thanks.
1. People have called. They said letters were "going out at the end of THIS week." Who knows. I doubt spring break for students affects that.
2. I mean we can't be 100% absolutely sure about anything, but it seems like decisions have been made, and as stated earlier, will be going out late this week.
3. I don't understand this question. I'm like 99% sure that medical schools do not call health career advisors post-interview. Hell, I've never met mine. They wouldn't know a thing about me.
Just wanted to add to #1: HMS spring break only really applies to first year students and maybe fourth years. Second year students do not get a break. They are currently studying for their boards and need to finish up courses. Third years don't get a spring break (I think).
I'm pretty sure the admissions office is working. They didn't take off this week last year, and probably won't be this year either. Besides, they have a March 30 deadline and need to give people time to reply and make travel arrangements for their rather early revisit (Apr 10,11).
Earlier this month:
My mom retrieves the mail and is thumbing through a stack of letters on the kitchen table.
She shouts to my room, "There's a thick envelope from Harvard!"
:::My eyes well up and my heart explodes:::
She continues, "...nevermind, it's something for grandma."

I'll add to #3: The premed advisor only plays a major role in med school decisions if they wrote a letter of recommendation for you. Even then, their letter counts just as any other letter of recommendation would. Schools might value the opinion of a premedical advisory dean a little more than they would value a non-tenured assistant professor, but maybe not. That's my take on it.

My mom was more upset about my Columbia waitlist than I was. The Columbia waitlist destroyed almost all hope she had that I would get into Harvard. Earlier last week, she left a really sad voicemail hoping that I was going to be okay (she thought that Harvard was sending decisions last week and figured that I was going to have an awful week because of that). She just sent me an urgent email reminding me to eat lunch and included specific hints for things to buy at the grocery store. This is her way of expressing her love and concern. I'm glad that she's thinking about me.
Oh my god.....your mom sounds like my best friend's mom who tends to go a little nuts. No offense or anything! Does that bother you? Is Harvard like her top choice for you or she knows it is yours so she is empathizing?
My parents are kinda hilariously oblivious. They are...not shocked or anything, but always pleasantly surprised when I get an acceptance. Like hey wow, there nomoreplz goes again!

That's how my mom is. I think Harvard is her top choice for me (she won't say it, but I know it). She doesn't even want me to seriously think about which school I would attend out of the ones that have accepted me, because she wants me to wait and see if I got into Harvard. She's hoping I get accepted with a scholarship. I told her they don't even give out merit scholarships, but she doesn't believe me! Oh man, my mom is so cute...

he grew up in another country and doesn't have the best handle on how things work.
Same here, this is the exact source of my problem!![]()
