Here are the programs that I have interviewed at / will interview at. My future career plans are to be a Cardiologist in California .

1. Mayo (all three sites)
2. University of Wisconsin
3. UCLA
4. UCD
5. UCI
6. UCSF-Fresno
7. USC
8. Cedars Sinai

What would be your ROL?

all good programs, but I would avoid

UCI and UCSF-Fresno

UCSF-Fresno: not really affiliated with UCSF (in name only), more similar to a community program.

UCI: less academic than the other academic programs. not the best place to be if you are after a competitive fellowship. definately not as bad as UCSF-Fresno.

People have said similar things to me in the past, UCI not academic … I must say that on my visit I did notice that most of the people that did a fellowship stayed in Irvine. That could be viewed as both good and bad. If they stay there it could be because they do not want to leave and that the faculty wants them (this is the story that I was told when there) or it could be that they could not leave and obtain fellowships elsewhere (what I fear).

How about a ROL? What do you think? Please let me know.

You need to balance the California factor (it's easier to stay in California than to enter California) with reputation. Of the ones you've listed, here's how I would rank them:

1. UCLA
2. USC
3. UCD
4. Mayo
5. Cedars Sinai
6. UCI
7. UCSF Fresno
8. University of Wisconsin

May I ask your opinion of putting USC higher than UCD? I am in a similar situation trying to compare the two. Thanks!

Both USC and UCD are in the shadow of power house programs. However, USC is the 2nd program in the LA region and UCD is probably 4th or 5th in the NorCal area (UCSF, Stanford are obviously one and two; some would place the Kaiser hospitals ahead of UCD). Based on case selection and regional rankings, I personally place USC ahead of Davis.

UC Davis is a much stronger program than USC, unless one is bent on staying in the LA area. Even then, it is difficult ignore that UC Davis is the fourth strongest program in California, after UCSF, Stanford and UCLA, in that order.

nothing against USC, but i think ranking them higher than Davis and Mayo is a touch absurd. but that's just me. to each his own. Mayo of course is Mayo. Davis would be a powerhouse program except that it has to compete for talent against UCSF and Stanford. Both Davis and Mayo also have the disadvantages of being in crappy locations. You could argue that USC is in a bad location too, but at least you're in LA.

Mayo being Mayo, the OP wanted to stay in California for fellowship. Thus I placed Mayo where I did based on success in fellowship placement in California.

wanted to get some more insight with this one. please help. anything
