Somebody mentioned this above: It seems the AF treats their dentists the best and the Army the worst.
-Does anybody have any insight on the accuracy of this?
Additionally, I have heard that if you want to specialize (esp. in oral surgery), and have acceptance to a "reasonably" priced dental school, then the HPSP does not make financial sense. Just looking at the $ part (and not the service to your country part), does anybody have insight in to this?
That is true for OMFS and the higher paying specialties, it doesn’t pay out as well in the long run. However since oral surgery is extremely competitive there’s not a huge chance you’ll make it :/ . I felt like this way I can try for OMFS, if I get it then I have to go through 4 (I wouldn’t do a 6 year program but the payback increases to 6 years if your residency is 6 years) years honing my skills in the military before trying to going into civilian. If I don’t make OMFS I just want to be the most comprehensive general dentist possible and i have heard that the military helps a lot with that from people I shadowed. Finally, the military also offers their own residencies (4 years mostly) for OMFS which means that I can also apply to those and increase my chances at specializing. Plus who knows I might/probably will change my mind about OMFS.
