HPSP C/O 2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Somebody mentioned this above: It seems the AF treats their dentists the best and the Army the worst.
-Does anybody have any insight on the accuracy of this?

Additionally, I have heard that if you want to specialize (esp. in oral surgery), and have acceptance to a "reasonably" priced dental school, then the HPSP does not make financial sense. Just looking at the $ part (and not the service to your country part), does anybody have insight in to this?

That is true for OMFS and the higher paying specialties, it doesn’t pay out as well in the long run. However since oral surgery is extremely competitive there’s not a huge chance you’ll make it :/ . I felt like this way I can try for OMFS, if I get it then I have to go through 4 (I wouldn’t do a 6 year program but the payback increases to 6 years if your residency is 6 years) years honing my skills in the military before trying to going into civilian. If I don’t make OMFS I just want to be the most comprehensive general dentist possible and i have heard that the military helps a lot with that from people I shadowed. Finally, the military also offers their own residencies (4 years mostly) for OMFS which means that I can also apply to those and increase my chances at specializing. Plus who knows I might/probably will change my mind about OMFS.

Anybody know if there’s any way we can check some account for the HPSP notification, if our recruiter is missing? haha

I doubt you have any way to see it yourself or else we'd render our recruiters useless. But since yours seems to already... contact another recruiter who can either help find out what happened to yours at your office and see about getting you a new point of contact if warranted.

How is it that you received both? Or do you mean you received the 4-year and plan on switching it to the 3-year?

My recruiter told me I could apply to multiple scholarships, the same way you can apply to HPSP and HSCP. So I applied for the 3 year and 4 year and the board professionally recommended me for both. He will confirm with the board that I will receive the 4 year scholarship, and then my 3 year scholarship will go to someone on the OML.

Just a heads up because I know the Navy HPSP got recently handed out. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT tell everyone you received the scholarship just yet. I personally know a handful of people who were “professionally recommended” for the Navy HPSP and did not get the scholarship. The reason being is that in the past couple of years, the Navy has been “professionally recommending” way more applicants than they had spots, leaving quite a few people SOL. I would hold off on telling people until your name appears on the scroll and you take oath.

Do you happen to know when those extra people were informed they didn’t actually get the scholarship after being professionally recommended? Was it right before school started? That’s not cool...

After the final select, can they still take it away?

From what I gathered, they were notified months after being pro rec. however, they weren’t told they were specifically final selected, just pro recced. I think that if you were selected, you’re set. However, being selected is very different from being pro rec. Talk to your recruiters and make sure that it’s a done deal, and that you’re selected. If they say you’re pro recced but your chances are good, still wait until you get the select.

Just received the 4 year Navy HPSP!

I know we are all being pro recommended, but is there any chance of not being final selected? It'd be a shame to get excited only to have things change between now and dental school.
This is what I am wondering as well. I am going to have to turn down my Army spot soon, and I would hate to do that and then not get final selected. I don't know how high the chances are of that happening, but still something I'm thinking about. Lord willing it will all workout.

Does anyone know how many Navy scholarships they gave out at the Jan board? I’m submitting to the March board and wondering if I’ll have a chance at the 4 year HPSP

Does anyone know what happens in the scenario that you end up going to UOP, but get the 4-year scholarship for the Navy? Are you able to downgrade it to a 3-year one or are you stuck with a 4 year scholarship no matter what?
I’m going through this right now... I can keep ya posted

I was submitted for the Feb board. My recruiter told me there are 20 left (mostly 3-year), but that this number will likely increase due to some selects who applied and got into other branches. If there are no more 4-year left, then they start handing out the 3-year which is essentially still like a 4-year because they will pay all 4 years of tuition, the only difference is they cannot send the first payment and stipend until October of the fall you matriculate because that is when the new fiscal year begins.

My recruiter has just called me and said that in 6 weeks, the final selection will come out and we will all know 100% what scholarships we've received if at all. That means mid-late March.

Is it for specific branch or for all three (Army, Air Force, and Navy)?

I just asked my Navy recruiter’s boss if I was just professionally recommended or actually selected. She said unlike years prior, this year there were 60 four-year HPSP’s and they are only recommending 60. The rest are just alternates. She told me as long as I fill out the Academic Year Statement for my school then “there’s no reason you shouldn’t be selected”. Hope that helps

Do you know if there was a deadline to submit to the March board? I have called recruiters and they told me that I am too late to apply.

Thanks! I was also in contact with my recruiter and she told me the same thing. Seems like the issue in previous years of people being told they were selected even though they were alternates was due to miscommunication among the dental corps, which they have taken active measures to prevent from happening again.

I submitted my AYS for my school and my Navy recruiter just called and said 65 were professionally recommended, so similar numbers. I asked my recruiter if there's a chance that I don't get the 4 year scholarship and he said yes there is a chance, but that it's very tiny and worst-case scenario I'll be guaranteed the 3 year scholarship.

Just got accepted into dental school today.. I know I'm so late, is there any chance I could still start the process for this scholarship? I'm incredibly interested.

Short answer: not in time for any 4-year, start the process now for 3-year Army/AF and stay on your recruiter.

Long answer: read the whole thread

At this point, it is to late for the 4 year option. But some branches offer 3 year and 2 year scholarships.

Figured that for the four year after browsing through. But any help is better than none. thanks so much!

I was in a similar situation to you as I was too late for the 4 year, but IMO 3 year is a great option, hence why I applied.

Truly though, call and then stay on your recruiter like no other.

My recruiter told me the deadline for the March board is this Friday, the 15th. I think this is the last board of the cycle but I’m not sure

So are the scholarships all gone for this fall session? Waiting on official acceptance letter to speak with recruiter. Maybe I’m behind the game without even knowing..

They are not all gone, but the window for application is closed, at least for both the Navy and Airforce. Maybe someone else can speak for the Army, but that window may be closed as well.

Is anyone with the 4 year army scholarship still waiting on their scroll or been told anything? I was selected in December and haven’t been told much.

I’m also in the same boat. Nothing official has come through yet.

My recruiter called me soon after he read my name on the accepted list. I haven’t seen any scroll, but I have been in touch with my recruiter a lot-even today. Give yours a call or email this week

Interesting..my recruiter told me all 55 spots for the four year were filled, 17 professionally recommended waitlist (I fall in the middle of that list), and 12 no’s. Also said that it is unlikely that I move up the professionally recommended waitlist to an accepted spot. Maybe a reputable recruiter should log on here and clear this up!

Ya mine did the same (2nd best phone call of my life!) and I’ve been in touch with him like every other day lol but he’s still waiting on the official paperwork for commisioning, etc

I think you’re looking for the med not dental HPSP thread. If it’s anything to ya I was selected end of January and already commissioned, did OPAT, and set up MODS. I think if you haven’t been told much I would get on your recruiter to get things going! Lol

What the heck. He has been hinting that it won’t be for months. It won’t let me message you, I have a few questions if you don’t mind.

My recruiter told me 55 as well, I asked her about some people saying they heard 60 or 65, apparently this is because there are a few collegiates(not to sure what that means in this case.) and some three year scholarships.

She said the HPCP (collegiate I think) had five spots and was also more competitive even though it doesn’t pay for your full tuition..

Also, I’m talking dental hpsp for navy and army. I somehow got to this thread thinking everyone was talking dental

I am with ESPN907, I just commissioned last night and I have OPAT set up for March, 14th. I would reach out to your recruiter again because my appointment orders were there for a week before I commissioned.

Does anyone know if the March board applicants even have a chance of being selected for the 4-year scholarship? For the Navy specifically.

What is OPAT?

There are 5 spots for HSCP this year and are all filled?

Lol I think we have the same Navy recruiter.
