I'm a Trinidadian IMG, and by IMG I mean straight out of medical school in the Caribbean. I'd like some advice on the relative prospects of eventually working in Canada provided that I became a permanent resident. I've read about the hoops and 5% acceptance rates etc for IMGS for hours...days even and at this stage I have questions regarding what route would be best. Would it be smarter to do a full residency in my home country and THEN try to make the move? Or would that ultimately be a waste of time as I'd possibly have to redo it in Canada? I know how hard it is to get training in Canada as an IMG so I want to know if it's easier to approach it as an already qualified specialist or if I should just tough it out in the residency application line without spending more years training at home. How about applying to practice as a GP, without planning to do a residency at all? Or doing a residency in the US and then trying to practice in Canada? What's the easiest?
