Incoming M1 c/o 2020 Back to school thread

Ever since I got my acceptance, my life has taken a turn downwards at 60mph. The first month in, I was sleeping in till freaking 1pm everyday, playing bball and watching tv shows while eating snacks in my bed. It was too cush, and my life was being poisoned. Its gotten better since then.....I go on runs to get lean, and I've kept myself reading from my GoodReads list and current events everyday so I at least stay connected with the world.:laugh::laugh:
I got my acceptance letter last August (I was an ED applicant) and have had to will myself through working the last almost 10 months. Lucky since I do project work I was able to take a few extended vacations in between projects to keep my sanity.

Same. Read everything from Atul Gawande in this order: Better, Checklist Manifesto, Complications, Being Mortal. It will give you the most logical approach to how Dr. Gawande makes his personal journey from a green surgical resident to a lean, mean doctoring machine.

I also recommend the following books in no particular order: Stiff: The curious lives of human cadavers by Mary Roach, When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, Emperor of all Maladies by Siddartha Muhkerjee, The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat by Oliver Sacks, The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy, Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.
Hmm I recommend not reading anything medically related.. Don't want to burn out before you even start 😉

It's paracetaminophenol, which is why half the world calls it paracetamol and the other half calls it acetaminophen!

Edit: sorry, that was from memory. Google shows that it's actually paracetylaminophenol, short for the full N-acetyl-para-aminophenol, IUPAC N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide
Wait, how is it a phenol. It's not benzene, its just cyclohexane...
WAIT WTF THEY DIDNT ADD DOUBLE BONDS MY EYES

Who else is moving across the entire country, one coast to another? Road trip!
Nah, not quite, just up the west coast (14 hrs)! I can't decide if I want to...
A) Buy a car here, rent a uhaul trailer to fit all my clothes/furniture/bike/household items
B) Rent a uhaul truck, buy a car later
C) Sell all my furniture/bike/household items and haul my clothes by plane/train, buy a car later
D) Rent PODS to move everything, buy a car now or later (expensiiivee)
Edit: E) Buy a car here, sell all my furniture/bike/household items and haul my clothes by car

Agh every option has its pros and cons. I have a lot of stuff that I want to keep...

I vote for option B!

A) If you don't already have a car that you're planning to take with you, no sense in dealing with the hassle of towing stuff.
C&E) Trying to sell everything sounds like a headache, and re-buying everything might be more pricey than what you'll make when you offload (even if you're picking up used items).

Dude, PODs are SO expensive (but nothing compared to movers). Uhaul trucks are ass to drive, though. Think about convenience cost other than just actual monetary cost!
If the spouse gets a job in time, we will traverse with the dogs and cats, too. So yay for $$$ on hotels that accept furry companions.

B or C for sure, probably B so you have all your furniture, saves extra hassle of buying

FWIW, all La Quinta hotels are pet friendly, and usually don't break the bank.

2/3 proposed hotel stops atm are La Quintas 🙂 I just hope they don't have a limit and we have to split up into two rooms. Of course, if it's hush hush enough they'll never know. (My idiot GSD likes to bark at unknown noises though.)

A couple of La Quintas I've stayed at have had me list my furbabies and sign my life away regarding the chewing or, uh, "marking" of anything in the room, but many didn't say anything (even when I would walk the dogs right past the desk).

Best of luck with it! How many quadrupeds do you have?

I am going to be completely judged for this....
We have 4 dogs and 2 cats.
However, I can promise you they cost less in food, housing, and destruction than 4 kids! (oh, and mental anguish too. They hardly ever disappoint 😉 )

:hello:Nearly coast to coast. Google Maps approximates 32 hours, but I doubt that includes regular stops. 2200miles without detours!

Whats your damage?
Speaking from experience, you can do coast-to-coast in the US in <48hrs, but not very much less (though our trip required a long bit north-south in CA at the end, so yours may be shorter). Side benefit: no hotels for the dogs to worry about!

Thanks all for the votes! Haha. I'm inclined to buy a car here because the selection of cars is much higher quality than where I'm going. Also inclined to keep my things rather than sell and re-buy. I'd want to rent a uhaul van, not an actual truck (been there, done that! They are kinda hard to drive!) Last time I looked, vans weren't available on my preferred dates.

F) Buy a Uhaul truck, drive it to school everyday. 🙂

Edit: And it'd be about $1500 for their smallest truck :/ money I'd rather put toward a car...but the trailer and hitch will cost money too...

Edit edit: I don't know why I keep awkwardly replying to my own posts, sorry.

The more the merrier! If I didn't make a conscious choice to stay away from the humane society, I would definitely have more than my two current knuckleheads.

I'm probably choosing the most expensive route: pack what I absolutely need in my carry-on + 2 check-in bags/boxes, hop on a plane, "settle in," and spend the next week or so shopping for necessities and exploring the city. I don't own much to begin with, and the idea of a road trip sounds daunting.

3 bags and a week of shopping ought to net you more than necessities!

Also, this plan (which I unfortunately will probably follow as well) sounds way MORE daunting to me than a road trip, haha!

I mean, the furniture hunt will be interesting, and since I can only afford IKEA, that will be full of migraines just from the hours spent assembling everything.

Quick! Tell me the IUPAC for this!
Organic-Chemistry-3-03-C.jpg

That looks like a deformed spider to me..

I need to go back to school.

Depending on your decision, I'll help you out if you need it 🙂 Well, if I'm there by that time.

There's a 6 foot long IKEA desk that I am absolutely getting and modding out.

yep, gonna need a link for that please!
I thought about getting their height adjustable desk...

You can find crazy vids on how hardcore gamers trick this thing out.
I've only been out for a year, but I swear my job has killed all motivation and brain cells ... I need to get my ass into gear asap

I have the half version of this desk (only one set of drawers and not as long). Fairly easy to put together! I think the chair I bought was more difficult to assemble haha

Im curious how people manage to trick this desk out?

I feel like on one hand, medical school is still almost 3 full months away but on the other hand, the days have just been flying by. I got accepted at the end of February and remembered thinking "I have 5 and a half months now to just chill and relax!" and now it's already down to about 2.5 months. March and April really just whizzed by.

I'm going to be working until about mid-June, then spend a couple of months traveling, chilling at home and spending time with family and friends. I'm a bit worried about figuring out housing and furniture and things like that, but I'm sure I'll be able to get that stuff sorted out when the time comes. I haven't even gotten my financial aid package yet!!!

everyone echoed to me your sentiments throughout high school & college:

Seniors from when I was in Freshman year of high school: "Enjoy the next four years; High School flies by fast...."

College Seniors during my freshman year of UG: "Enjoy the next four years; UG flies by fast..."

It is almost like a bad case of déjà vu... :inpain:--> 🙁--> :cigar:

but "It is as it is... right, moi droog?"

Also, is there anyone else who feels more nostalgic than excited at this point? I'm definitely looking forward to starting a new journey, but I also feel this crippling sense of longing for college and home, and for all the times I had with my close friends. It makes me sad knowing that after hanging out with them every day for 4 years in college and seeing two of my close friends 1-2 times a month so far during my gap year, I'll only be seeing them maybe 2-3 times a year now, at least for the foreseeable future. Anyone else feel that way?

Damn, that's a giant desk! I was thinking of getting a couple of those filing cabinets, and DIYing a prettier top out of boards from the Home Depot. #crafty

Look up ABF. We used them to move across the country (North to South though, not coast to coast) and it was by far the cheapest option. It's like a giant POD, but you're basically using part of a semi truck...

Would totally do this if I had a car... If it's one thing I learned while at USC, it's that (upper class) millennials love to give stuff away because they don't have to patience to sell it.
Zipcar? Uhaul? Roommate?
I don't understand how you're going to get any desk without use of a car.

3 big ones apparently.
-silently prays for the spouse to get a job that includes relocation reimbursement-

I just got a whiteboard, I've always liked practicing pathways on them, and want one in my apartment, so I don't want to spend all my time at the library, so I can hang out with my cat. (Yeah, I'm a crazy cat person) Also looking at getting a computer monitor I can plug my laptop in. Other than that, just checking email, facebook group a lot just because I'm terrified that I'll forget to send in a random form and not be allowed to start med school (still being neurotic after being accepted) Definitely not pre-studying at all. Trying to work a lot and save money, and getting married in June!

Whoa. Okay not a good suggestion on my part 👎
No, this is actually really good. I can't imagine what movers would cost! (We are travelling basically coast to coast, so it won't be cheap.)
Worst case scenario, I bite the bullet on the upfront cost and take it back in loans.

I dont have any futniture in my name since my UG roommates had extra desks, chairs and even beds for me to use. Ill just spring for a cheapo ikea or walmart chair and desk probably 😛
